Jar Jar, Tarpals, or Nass ? Choose wisely !

I vote for any of the Gungan kids romping around in the sacred ruins.

Boss Nass rocks!!!

Brian Blessed did such a great job with him. Nice balance between powerful and comical.

Nass gets my vote too. You gotta love the only fat Gungan in the movie.

I like Nass, and I like Binks, but my vote goes to Tarpals. This is strictly based upon the line, "Ouch time!"

I seem to remember seeing a background Gungan in the temple scene who was shorter than the others and rather plump. Did anyone else notice this?

No. No they didn't.:D

I liked Nass, I thought his stuff was pretty interesting, but ultimately, I thought Tarpals had the most integrity so he's my choice.

I would have liked to have seen more Gungans doing stuff in their city, interacting, talking in their language instead of that pidgin Enlish that Jar Jar and the others spoke. I liked the ones that were shocked by Jar Jar and the humans entering their city, they spoke a snipit of Gungan and acted nervous.

Boss Nass has so far had the best and worst Gungan action figure so I vote for him.:D

I also have to go with Boss Nass . He's one of the best characters in TPM .

I go Tarpals too.He makes the Gungan seem alittle less like a joke.

I vote for that clone Gungan in the big Naboo battle scene. Nah; Mr. Nass. Notice no one hardly never (bad gramer rocks!) mentions the "blh blh blh blh!" spitting of Boss in their "icky goo," breaking wind, and other crass humor examples?

this isn't my choice, but i'm suprised no one said their favorite gungan were the dead ones on the batlefield.:)

Why is Boss Nass unlike the rest of the Gungans? Is he a "foreigner" taking advantage of a lesser species?

Bel-Cam Jos

Stillakid, read the TPM Visual Dictionary. It says something like Nass is from a different species of Gungan from a different area of Naboo. Kinda like how birds can look different, but are stillabird. Get it? Stillabird? Stillakid? Hello? Hello? Yes, I'll hold...

LOL.

Okay, but why is there just one of the Boss Nass guys? Did he eat the rest of his clan? Why would the Jar Jar type Gungans let this yahoo run their operation over one of their own?

Because the computers used to process the Gungans can only handle one fat-Nass:D, all the background Gungans look the same because we're not supposed to notice those. Even though everybody does.

After all, farting in someone's face (and the camera) and graphically stepping in crap are on the same level as a facial tick and mild slobbering... :p

Hmmm... dare I post in an 'I love EP1' thread? Weee-eeell, Although I'm not terribly fond of EP1, I do like the design of it in a funny kind of way. Any movie that uses art deco and art nouveau as inspiration is worthy of at least a nod of appreciation. But to the point - My favourite gungan would be Tarpals because he has the most intelligence and his character is quite finely drawn in subtlety. His integrity is shown quite clearly as is his veteran status. Younger viewers may not pick up on the nuances but us oldies do. He has the resigned air of someone well used to suffering idiots on a daily basis. I can sympathise with him on that score.
But I also like the fat Gungan at the sacred place. Out of all the SAMEY SAME Gungans we see, the fat Gungans ewere a refreshing change. As were the kid Gungans.

I liked the Gungan that was in the first group, third row, fifth one in at the battle. He had a heck of an arm for throwing those energy balls.

I need to get up earlier in the morning, Jargo keeps beating me to the punch on replies to posts. As you see from his post, yes, there was a portly Gungan.

My favorite? Jar Jar Binks of course.

What? Oh, this isn't who is your favorite Gungan to hate? Ooops! Make that Boss Nass then.

In all actuallity, I entered into watching TPM with a strong conviction to hate Jar Jar Binks. And at first I was not disappointed in the least ("Exqueeeezzze me!" Nice dialogue George/Amad). But then I developed a love/hate feeling for Jar Jar, switching at intervals between the two. In the end that nutty Gungan wound up growing on me and I liked him despite himself.

Tarpals was a great example of a Gungan with a reserved personality, not too far in either extreme, one of the big problems when a director (of human actors) unleashes animators and directors therof on part of his film and seems to take no active interest in controlling their efforts (a prime example is the elongated musical number in Jabba's Palace in ROTJ:SE, I would hope that had Lucas been directing a human singer, he would not have driven the camera straight down his throat, as the animators did with Joh Yowzah, a serious breach of quality filmmaking protocol that reduced the sequence to Loony Tunes).

Now that I am off of my soapbox, I will cast my lot with Boss Nass. At first I wondered that he was a Gungan at all, until late in the film when we see his ear-thingies tucked behind his hat-thingie. I like the thought that he is a different species (or perhaps ethnicity) of Gungan than the majority of Utah Gungah. The question of why the others follow his lead is simple enough to answer, as "Boss" he is something like the president or king of his people, of all their varied ethnicity. Perhaps most of the red-brown, scrawny Gungans populate that city (the one most convenient to the battlegrounds as it worked out) while other green and purple skinned types (like Nass and Tarpals, remember, he had different colored skin too, and whiskers) are predominant in other cities that were too remote to have lent their armies to the ground battle. Brian Blessed is one of my all time favorite actors and a large than life character in his own right. I was glad to see that he could be a part of the Star Wars saga, which has always had a fine sampling of British actors and actresses.

Bottom line with the Gungans is that there was not ample time to flesh out their culture and the differences between them. A nice touch would have been to intermingle green and purple skinned Gungans amidst those in the ground battle. This would not have increased the cost or difficulty involved in producing those sequences and would have prevented such confusion as to Tarpals and Nass' origins.

I really have to cast my vote for Jar Jar. After reading the novel, I really began to like his character. You'll notice in the movie how no one even likes him, exept maybe Anakin; it's the same way in the novel only a little more so. Especially the friction between JJ and Obi-Wan. Heck even Qui-Gonn insults him in the novel. Poor guy.:(

Tarpals, hands down! He looks different than most Gungans, he has an awesome outfit, and he doesn't seem that dumb or annoying (Jar Jar=Annoying, Boss Nass Spitting=Annoying). One thing besides his character, is that is action figure was one of the coolest and best detailed figure from the EP1 line. Boo-yah!!!

Captain Tarpals was really cool!! Although, I didn't find Jar Jar that annoying at all; but I guess it's hard to be annoyed when my nephews laugh at everything he does.

Now there's also that female Gungan herder from the CW cartoon.

I'm waiting for Boss Hogg... "Ooooh, that Dook-, that Dooku!" as he takes his speeder bike over a bridge.

Probably Tarpals. But not because he's the coolest Gungan, rather he's the least annoying Gungan.

Heh, I love the Gungans. And I'm one of the very few it seems, that never ever got annoyed with them, even Binks. I thought it was funny, and all around lovable adition to the Star Wars saga:).

So, Jar Jar gets mesa vote!

When I first looked at the sculpture, I saw a Gungan in 3/4 profile. But yeah, it's a ringtail in reality.
