View Full Version : pbarnard's customs

07-19-2006, 02:22 PM
About time I got back in the game...New place decided I needed some new customs to go into it. These are simple head swaps.

Scanning Trooper
POTF2 AT-ST Driver body (gloves aren't proper but hey, it's the cheap alternative), one is the Scanning Trooper head I got in a trade with Kit Fisto over at FFURG, the other is an Imperial Officer head from the Saga (so he suffers from peanut head disease).

Imperial Officer
BoShek head and Adm. Motti Body thanks to TND over at FFURG.

Scanning Trooper
POTF2 AT-ST Driver body (gloves aren't proper but hey, it's the cheap alternative), one is the Scanning Trooper head I got in a trade, the other is an Imperial Officer head from the Saga (so he suffers from peanut head disease).

Imperial Officer
BoShek head and Adm. Motti Body.

Kirtan Loor
Probably the weak one of this group. Just something literally thrown together because of how iconic the Tarkin head is. Decided to make him bearded because of a happy accident with the paint brush. Still haven't gotten it cleaned up that well, but it'll do.

Imperial Storm Commando
A RIT Dye special of a PotJ/Saga Scout Trooper. You can find info on the Storm Commandos in the Rebellion Era Source Book, Imperial Sourcebook, and The Star Wars Databank (http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/stormcommandos/index.html). I applied some black and some flat and semi gloss clear coat.

Blackhole Shadow Trooper
More RIT Dye and paint mix. These were 3 POTF2 Sandtroopers and 1 POTF2 Dewback Stormie. Their pauldrons were removed, dyed, paint applied over the sand paint (dye didn't take), than sealed with a semi gloss.

Imperial Admiral
An Army of Darkness Ash head (from Spectre), Adm. Ozzel Body, Hands from Moff Jerjerrod. I had to trim the neck post way down to fit the Ash head and than glue it on. I'm still doing some research on which admiral this guy will be.

Moff Jerjerrod
Swapped the hands with Ozzel. I think it was on the sirstevesguide forums where I read Jerjerrod was gloved in the movies, so little things like that irk me and I quickly swapped the hands. Cheap custom, but at least I didn't give the guy a hat, cloak and new gun (accessorization) and call it a custom :P

Number One, I order you to Number Two!
In our last trade, Ash sent along a Picard head. Couldn't figure out what to do with it till I decided I need the pilot body and BoShek as X-wing pilot had to go. So wheels within wheels, got going, and well this guy came to be. And he's now part of the Death Star shelf. The Phaser, spectre throw in, dyed black. Set it to stun, wait, he's an Imperial now. It's max setting.

Garm Bel-Iblis

POTF2 General Lando Body and GI Joe (Double {sic}) Clutch head cast. Why go with the POTF2 body? It was on hand. Practiced more drybrushing with white on the grey hair.

Jorrus C'Baoth
Flashback Photo Obi-Wan body and a Rock N Roll head cast. I don't go with a long beard because that is probably due to the artist rendition of Heir to the Empire believing that he was isolated on Wayland for a couple of decades, as well as the medallion is some trinket he found in the storehouse (also he wasn't Corellian so probaly no JedCred struck). The Jedi version would probably be more groomed. Also, the cover art is drawn from concept art, and than aged or youthed depending on the time sequence of the book; I also feel that the look draws to heavily/inspired by Sauramon. Trying to push him back to the Jedi side of things.

Well I've had a conversation with several people, they swear there are 3 Duros in the cantina besides Ellor and Banis. I don't know, and well at one point I think they convinced me so I started this guy.

Duros Spacer
Ellors Madak head and hands on a BoShek body. The body was painted grey, and than white was applied. After that I diritied him up by dry brushing black all over and especially heavier on the upper body.

Thanks. Any specific figs you want to point out? Sort of general and any specific criticism or directions you can add will be considered.

Yea no prob-
Scannin crew #1: This guy looks good. Only thing that I think slightly detracts from it is the big chest he has. I wouldve used the han in At St disguise, but looks fine as it is.
Sacnnin crew #2: Your right about the peanut head- I think this would be a perfect candidate for the han body asformentioned, because it is smaller.
Imp with boshek body: great concept, I just might have to try it! The only thing I would do is try to make the head look a little different. I think he almost looks to British. Maybe get rid of the sideburns and and make his hands match his face?
Kirtan: Ok, good idea but the beard just looks bad. I think you could totally save it if you brought his lips back :D Right now it kinda looks like hes bound up with some kinda tape ;)
Commando/Blackhole: Nothin to say here- looks good.
Imp Admrial: The face looks good on this one. I do see a problem though, which I have had to, the hands dont match the detail of the face. If you could fix that (and maybe trim down the post on his right hand)I think you got a winner. Its kinda funny- I made a custom with a head kinda like that and he totally stuck out from my other imps cause he looked to real..
Jerjerrod: Looks fine to me
Picard: Ahh good ol' picard.. Before I say anything I just want you to know that this is the best use of his head for a SW figure Ive seen that doesnt really look like him (its a good thing in my book!). Ok, I know that paintin eyes is a bi*** but ya just gotta fix his left eye! I also know that takin off those darn ranking things is really fun to do.. I see you kinda had a little troube here too. Maybe smooth it out and paint him would do the trick. It might be hard to match the color but I think it would be worth it. If not I would just remove the stray silver line and paint another one up the side so it matches the other side. I think you did a wash on his head, and I have to say it looks good!

Alright.. thats my 2 :p

Aleema Rar

Just RIT Dyed an Ayala RotS fig. The spotting pattern on her lekku was just random accident.

Kenth Hammner

Calling this one Kenth Hammner. More military looking both in gear and clothing. A Chimera of PTE, bbi Elite Force, PotF2, and GI Joe parts.

Tenel Ka

Princess Leia Collection head, GI Joe Baroness Body, Cyber 9 arms. Metalic paint to simulate the Dathomiri skins, but still with a crown.

Tahiri Viella

Bombstrike head, Princess Leia Collection Bespin, and Pilot Padme parts. The scarring pattern is applied with a small fine tipped .035mm Drafting pen.

Enough for now. More later.

Pretty good- but wasnt Alema missing a forearm too?

Pretty good- but wasnt Alema missing a forearm too?

I don't think so. She did go pretty Dark after the death of her sister (so anything after Star by Star she's boarderline to Dark Sider).

08-08-2006, 10:55 PM
no no no im talkin like swarm war new. Im pretty sure someone cut off part of arm. oh wait, I think I just remembered- didnt it get crushed somehow it was kinda just hangin around?

Kyp Durron NJO Era or Later

Clone Wars Obi-Wan Body, with GI Joe Valor vs Venom Ace head.

Jacen Solo Post Traitor NJO or Later

Another Clone Wars Obi-wan body, Episode II anakin head (keeps the familial resemblance).

Kam Solussar
I think this is a pilot obi-wan body with annoying action attack with a GI Joe Comic Pack Gen. Hawk head cast.

Clearing out some much older stuff. Will do some Rogues and Wraiths in the next few days.

08-10-2006, 03:39 AM
One thing I did notice was that their eyebrows dont match their hair..

08-10-2006, 03:32 PM
Lowbacca Late/Post NJO
I decided against doing his translator droid/belt. Why? Later in the NJO he loses it and well, if you use the Force your true meaning can be conveyed. Did add some highlights which the camera barely picks up. I like the darker color, shows diversity amongst the wookies.

Totally forgot the sequence of dry brushing. was something like red, brown, than orange on the tips of arms and top of head only.

From Hoth's Echo Base. A repaint of the Saga 06 R5-D4. Black with purple and some grey highlights. I had to paint the white white because of how dirty it looked.

Ric Olie's Astromech, I'll use him for one of my Rogue Pilots. Light green on the blue of a Hall of Fame R2-D2.

08-11-2006, 03:27 PM
Bannis Keeg

RIT Dyed Luke Skywalker Body, Ellors Madak head cast (by Ash), some paint, some dry brushing...
Had to take a picture with the flash on or the detail would've been lost. In the flash his blue seems a lot brighter than it does in natural light. Used a flat sealer except on the eyes where I used a Semi Gloss.

Gotal Fringer

Been using this guy to practice a lot of things. Dry brushing, various parts, odd combonations. Parts: Filprean Trevag Head and Hand Casts (Ash...thanks for the 2nd set of hands after I lost the first), Momaw Nadon PotF2 Chest, Orn Free Taa arms, and I think Dr Evazan or Ponda Bopa legs from a cantina set. RIT Dye, paint, dry brush. Semi Gloss clear coat applied to the horns and claws.

08-29-2006, 10:09 PM
I converted an OTC Y-Wing to accept certain astromech droids. Much earlier, like right after I bought it, I replaced the chin guns with Ponda Bopa shot gun barrels in a process outlined in FFURG.com's recipes. The process was simple. I first unscrewed the Y-Wing, removed the read engine exhaust vents that act as supports for the drive nacelles, and removed the final 2 screws. Pay attention to the landing gear, by messing with it now, you can gain a benefit of having it be stiffer when opened, conversely you can damage it and have it all go to pot. Finally, unscrew the faux R2 unit.

Next I drilled a dozen or so small holes around the bottom of the astromech socket mold in the top half of the ships hull. I than went to a cutting bit and cut the plastic between the holes. Finally i sanded smooth to the existing edges. However, this was unsufficient. The modern lines astromechs are much thicker than the vintage lines. I ended up having to grind away some of the plastic on the interior of the socket. (If you want to repeat this, you'll have to take the droid of choice and measure on your own, mine is sufficient for the Episode I and PotJ R2 molds but won't fit the VOTC based molds). You can do this because there seems to be two layers of plastic. The interior mold handles things like this socket, the landing gear and posts for the pilot seat. There is an outer layer in which there is the exterior detail. Be careful not to go to far beyond the inner hull and puncture the outer hull (although it may look cool as battle damage).

Not the best droid in the world, but it shows off the point. It now can work and display almost any droid I want like the Luke/OTC X-Wings.

As I've talked about in http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=33046
Marauder Inc Guns are great. I decided to chop up one of the Navy SoCom pistols to try and get them silencer free for my GI Joe figures. Well I screwed up, but there's no such thing here. It resembled a blaster pistol, so I went with it.

I'm happiest with the one that leaves a slight little edge to show the blaster focusing muzzle (bottom pic). I cut too close to the light/body of the gun initially (middle pic).

10-14-2006, 09:07 PM
Forgot about this one on the shelf for a few weeks...

I'm calling it a Heavy Blaster Rifle. Design seems BlasTech. Probably something in their 900 series. Utilizes a double power pack that gives it about 100 shots on auto/multifire mode (making it performance similar to a T21 but in class closer to a concussion rifle). 100m range.

http://www.yojoe.com/action/04/images/weapons/sasc4.jpg Made from this GI Joe weapon. Sliced the bayonet off to use as a knife (going to a friend in a trade), the straps, and a clip was than transfered to the side. Additionally shortened up the handgrip.

02-06-2007, 11:46 AM
I worked on my big mega case by adding some tiles from nien nunb's website and have painted some of the shelves themselves. One is set up to be a Death Star and the other a Rebel Cruiser in the New Republic or NJO era

Also making some casted Ewoks for background. These are in progress, and not much to talk about yet.

Repainted a couple to be striped with much darker colors.

02-24-2007, 07:25 PM
Well I am satisfied with 2 of the little monsters...So I applied some sculpey, baked it, and than put some flat acryl on. Course, it looks glossy despite saying flat so i'm <_< :bash: But for now, here are two completed Ewoks. Due to the ice storm over the upper midwest, I had time today to work on this since I couldn't go anywhere and that is why the photography seems a bit dark: non-optimal lighting conditions.

Used a hood loosely based off the Chirpa mold. Also gave him a bag and strap. He's the middle one from the first pic.

This one is the much maligned red one on the right of the original post. He's been repainted much darker and dry brushed primarily with the darker grey, followed by black and brown or brown or black or whaterver. I used a more traditional strap with a side pouch sculpted on.

Bith Rebel Fleet Trooper
Cantina tin head and hands. Hand posts have to be shortened.

Jango Fett Head Stormtroopers
Death Star Trooper head on Capture of Tantive IV pack trooper
AT-TE Gunner head on Capture of Tantive IV pack trooper
Episode IV Collector's Tin head on Capture of Tantive IV pack trooper. Neck is Super Sculpey to make a post.

Han Solo in Stormtrooper Disguise
Comic Pack Han Solo head on Episode IV Collector's Tin Stormtrooper head. The Luke Skywalker is a VOTC X-Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker head on a Comic Pack Han Solo head that is in the process of being painted white with GW Bone White.

04-27-2007, 04:31 PM

Ten Nienb and Capture Tantive IV on clearance equal more fast custom fun for me.

Gung Ho v13 head which had an action feature so I had to rescue it.

I chose not to give a helmet to aliens with heads too large for the helmet which I'll call Alderaan style. This is probably some remenant of the Alderaan militias from pre-disarmament days.

05-24-2007, 11:54 AM
Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise Finished

As stated early, you can see that GW Bone White isn't a perfect match. The finish is Model Master Acryl Semi Gloss Clear Coat. The body is Han Comic pack stormtrooper and VOTC X-Wing Luke head.

Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?

There is a slight height difference between the Han and Luke figures. Only the second picture uses any forced perspective angle. The first infront of the beautifuly wood piece that was a wedding gift of brazilian rose wood and mahogany, is side by side.

Finally, I should note that the pictures were taken on the wife's (and thus defacto mine) new Cannon Powershot S3 camera using the macro mode. All pics resized to aproximately 800x600 pixels since it's default is something like 2100X1200 give or take. Still playing with the settings.

i really like the alien rebel fleet troopers!

You should see my rants on diversity and aliens (and being true to ecological niches and evolution) over at ffurg. Course, it helps now that all the behind the scenes people are stating this in their books that LFL is releasing now.

Mara Jade-Skywalker

Boiled the Courtney Krieger Covergirl head to fit over the Mara Jade body. Presto done.

Jaina Solo

Pilot Padme from AtoC hollowed out on the Mara Jade Comic Pack body, the coat is Bespin Han Solo from Princess Leia Collection.

All lightsaber effects with lsmaker.

Surprised no one has beat me by posting these simple and relatively lazy customs.

08-24-2007, 04:46 PM
Nice Customs, whose the Courtney Krieger Covergirl head you refer to? GIJOE?

08-24-2007, 05:27 PM
Yes, she's Covergirl v2 that was available with the Devil's Due Comic Pack 16.

08-24-2007, 08:33 PM
Yes, she's Covergirl v2 that was available with the Devil's Due Comic Pack 16.

Nice, now if I can only find her head I'll be able to do the same.

08-24-2007, 10:05 PM
Good luck with that. That pack was quick to find its way into scalper, collector and customizer hands. That was my last head of the 3 I bought for specifically that purpose. Haven't really done a search, but never find her loose.

Basso, Rebel Commando
Good ol' Sergent Basso. He's lost comrades. He has a mopey Deena Shan and he's absolutely overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, potential and ability of one part time commando named Luke Skywalker. This figure was done with a Basso in Stormtrooper disguise and put on a Comic Pack Commando Luke Skywalker body. In all cases, this would be the proper source. Basso orginated in the comics, as did this uniform, so it should be based off comics.

A-Wing Pilot
I had to take my Dress Uniform Tycho head off his normal body. So I put another blonde haired man on, using the Luke Commando head from the Basso Custom. I'm big on recycling the parts between various customs (means I have a low level of fodder). This will probably be replaced later on if I need this head as I figure out what head I have a lot of. I did this earlier to make an X-Wing pilot Tycho, putting a Han Solo head on the A-Wing pilot. So my A-Wing Pilots are Luke, Han and the PotF2 versions, plus whatever Sullustans you say are A-Wing pilots.

Tycho Celchu, Dress Uniform
This is another simple head swap based on the Dress Uniform that the Starfighter command possessed but Wedge Antilles didn't know existed at the time of Rogue Squadron novel, but was yet drawn in the comic. Skepticism raised at that point because obviously the artists were ignorant of Stackpole's intention to use that line later on. Also dubious is the use of Sandy Brown/Brown haired Tycho Celchu as a bleached blonde. This is the fault of Hasbro, not Dark Horse. DH did draw him in a shade between brown and blonde, this is Hasbro's fault all the way. I'm just too lazy to fix it in this case.

Moff Tavira
First appearing in the Rogue Squadron comics as a young, impish girl who slept her way into an older man's bed than killed him to take his position of power. She than became more rigid and ran pirate gangs as her defense fleet and primary source of income. I painted a Juno/Shan body a dark olive green like the uniforms of Tarkin and the Death Star crews. And that put on an Indiana Jones "Cate Blanchet".

03-11-2009, 11:33 AM
Traest Kre'fey

R7 w/vintage legs

Keyan Farlander in X-Wing Gear

Councilor Pwoe

As always, all customs can be found in the link in my sig file. I encourage if you love or hate my customs, become a follower, post there too.

07-07-2009, 08:01 PM

Well I will have to be putting things away here in a few months for what is known right now as Baby Genetic Stir Fry. S/He will get the room I use as an office/workshop. So, I've gotten motivated to do a lot of things, some a bit rushed admittedly, just to get them done.

This is a little bit of everything from all over the SW time line, so in chrnologicaly Star Wars order

Tales of the Jedi Era Trooper

25th GI Joe Tripwire head on a Han Solo Body with Anakin Skywalker right hand and bbi Elite Force Left Hand, legs are a Death Star (IMPERIAL NAVY Trooper)

Vader's Secret Aprentice

SHHHHHH, it's Casting Call 56. There'll be at least three of them from me.

Mirax Terrik-Horn Re-done

Long story, hate the look she has in the Rogue Squadron comics, if it isn't boarderline wrong from literary descriptions. For most of the "rogue" books, Mirax has long brown hair, specifically worn in a braid for Krytos Trap in Corellian mourning style. By about I, Jedi to the NJO she picks up a bob and is known to dye her hair to pull off various assignments. She specifically is shown in the shower scene in the Union comic with a jet black bob. I've sort've taken liberties here to hybrid a lot of the source material to end up with a Lady Jaye head, Agent Courtney Cover Girl Krieger Comic pack arms/jacket, Commando Deena Shan legs, and Indiana Jones KotC russian babe torso with what you see here.

Han Solo, NJO

This is my take on Han at his lowest, drunk, half shaven, wearing a leather jacket specifically in the Agents of Chaos duology. Just an Indiana Jones head on a built up neck of a Cantina Han with Mutt Williams jacket.

Yuuzhan Vong Warriors

I did two of these using a Batman figure from a 2 pack I found at target. I knew I couldn't sculpt it, and Hasbro's monstrosity that is forthcoming is just way too bulky. I put a World Peace Keepers/PTE SWAT officer head on them both after cutting the nose off. I liked the elongated forehead and swept back hair. After that it was just finding the right skin tone. So I want to give credit to a fellow forrumite Uiesaentdtts for coming up with this skin tone. I tried to really, if not over, exagurate the purple sacs beneath the eyes. These are two warriors, creche-mates. I have armed the with Tsia's, shorter than the amphistaffs, but equally as deadly which are really tails from GI Joe Valor vs Venom Swamp Rats. I'm calling this Glistaweb armor, slightly lighter than the full Vonduum Crab, but a bit more realistic in tighter spaces for combat.

Post Script
I haven't decided if the below is going to be a Smuggler's Alliance helper or a Rogue that's off duty yet. You make the call folks...with who it is and why.
Mutt Williams head and pants, Han Solo torso/arms, Luke Endor belt w/Bail Oragana blaster.

09-23-2009, 11:57 AM
Well these are out of date...

But my GI Joe customs have gotten some recognition as one of the featured customizers of the day at joebattlelines.com.

10-22-2009, 09:11 PM
Tresina Lobi, NJO Jedi Knight, Legacy of the Force Master

She is a Chevin, so black pupil less eyes, grey skin.. After reading her specific description in Balance Point, she has the rare hair quality of wheat color. Parts are Adi Gallia arms, PotF2 Obi-Wan Kenobi legs, Wiolesa skirt and upper body, head is Marion Ravenwood cast from the Indiana Jones line.

So, the last Star Wars custom for a while will be...

Commodore Gavin Darklighter, Galactic Alliance
Rather simple with same basic recipe as Traest Kref'yla, but with a GI Joe Greenshirt head that's been dirtied up in a few places. So this is Gavin as he has now become a fleet Commodore in the second galactic civil war.

01-28-2010, 08:35 PM

Just about everything Star Wars and GI Joe from July on. No clue what I missed after the laptop crashed, the stuff was put away for the baby etc.
