View Full Version : Ideas for Luke, Leia, Lando from the end of Empire Strikes Back

These would be so cool - and easy for Hasbro!
Leia - a new head, but the mold exists for the ANH body. All she has to do is stand there. I'd use Leia All New Likeness from 1998, and add a new head.
Lando - I'd use most of the VOTC Han Solo body, but sculpt a new torso with the shirt collar neatly done up, repaint the hands, and add the POTJ Lando head, or if better, one of the Saga ones (General, perhaps?) Then I'd turn around and use the same new torso sculpt for a Han Solo Yavin Ceremony scene with repainted hands and the VOTC Han Solo head.
Luke - the most new figure for the bunch - a new body sculpt in its entirety I'm sure. Perhaps a VOTC head sculpt already made - add the arm in triaege from the Saga Bespin Luke, and have it removeable and include an arm with open "bionic panel" on it, and a regular arm with the figure - or just the latter 2 arms and skip the medical kit one. Heck - Dagobah Luke in handstand pose came with 4 arms! I'm asking for one less here.
In any case, if these main characters sell, than let's get these done already!
Hasbro can include blasters and Luke's green ROTJ lightsaber (he'll eventually build) with these figures to broaden kid appeal.
Leia could have her small Endor blaster, and Lando could carry a Han-style DL-44.

Man, Tycho, I should shoot you in the butt. The exclamation point you used made me click on this thread thinking you'd seen some news I hadn't. :p

I did. But they hired the guy who came up with the idea for collecting tin lunch boxes and purple and green Jedi Starfighters instead.

Leia - a new head, but the mold exists for the ANH body. All she has to do is stand there. I'd use Leia All New Likeness from 1998, and add a new head.Pose on that figure is all wrong, go with the Commtech version instead, it's not great but superior. Still, they're both not acceptable to modern quality standards, I'd love for them to do this figure new ANH Leia, something akin to the Commtech figure but with vastly superior articulation, no soft goods, 2 different snap-on hoods - a "down" version and an "up" version that goes over her head, and a second end-of-ESB swappable head.
Not really something I've ever felt needed to be done, I don't get why some folks clamor for a "Smuggler Lando". The VOTC Han body has the wrong torso as mentioned and also the sleeves are way too short. I don't think any recipe would be exactly right, they may as well use the lower body of VOTC Han and an all-new upper body, no crazy VOTC articulation required in the torso really.
I'm asking for one less here.MUST HAVE A NEW HEAD SCULPT! They've never come close to getting the ESB head sculpt right, the VOTC one is so far off it's ridiculous. This would need to be a new figure for the sake of us all. I think you'll need to do it with swappable arms, but that'd be cool.
I changed the title again, added "Ideas for" to be totally clear.
These wouldn't need superarticulation, just the poseability necessary to capture the particular poses/stances they had at the end of ESB - Luke should be able to sit upright and study his new hand. All Leia needs to do is stand there looking pretty with her hands together. And a single balljoint in one of Lukes shoulders so he can put his arm around Leia. Thats it really.
However, as with any figure I'd like accuracy in the sculpt. So if existing sculpts that Hasbro might be tempted to use don't actually represent their outfits from the scene then give us new sculpts with minimal articulation (and especially not f****** ball-jointed necks, I continue to hate them). I don't think All New Likeness Leia or commtech are good enough. Too tall for one thing.
I've always thought a POTF2esque cinema scene would have worked best for these. Although it would sort of defy convention for those since they all had 3 figures not 4 or 5. But anyway I can picture a window box in which, bizarrely and in a non-kid pleasing way, Luke&Leia and pristine Threepio&R2 have their backs to us looking out the window of the medical bay as the Falcon flies away - just like the shot in the film. Or if figures displayed from behind is considered too ridiculous then have the cardback show the medical bay with 21B in the background instead - that way the window of the box would represent the window of the frigate's med-bay as we look at the figures from the front.

nearly every Luke head sculpt is so far off it's ridiculous...however the ANH Luke with poncho/floppy hat is, at the very least, the least freaky looking Luke face of the bunch....

someone made custom versions of them and showed them in a recent issue of Lee's Toy Review. I believe for Leia they used a Rabe body and the head of an OTC Bespin Leia with the hair loops shaved off.
For Luke they used a OTC Lobot legs and a VOTC Luke head as well as his tunic for the robe and Lando was a skiff guard head and VOTC han body with a votc luke belt.
The figures looked good and can defiantly be something that Hasbro could do.

The likeness is the most difficult thing to capture in a figure. A big part of it is simply the hairstyle. Look at throne room Luke... that is a pretty close face, and the hair is almost there, but it seems to me Hasbro has a tendency to make faces skinnier than they actually are. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher actually have rather round shaped faces, particularly in ANH, and most of the figures have gaunt, long faces.
I think the best likenesses that jump out to me so far are screaming Mace and Qui-Gon, although he's probably easy because of the hair and the :beard:
Haha. Used the beard. Take that, KH!
Oh yeah, Endor Raid Han looks pretty good, too, although I hate the figure!

Thats it really. The sitting up articulation actually requires a mid-torso joint like the VTSC figures. Then there's also knee articulation, plus elbow and wrist articulation in the right arm.

The POTJ Bespin Leia head is one of the best likenesses in the entire scale AND it happens to be the same movie and hairstyle from the scene we're talking about.

No. I'm sorry. Leia is wearing her hair up in a simple, single bun - not the Bespin Braids recently sported by Jedi Master Depa Billaba in the prequels.
Her hair would only require a very simple sculpt add-on to the Bespin Leia JT is talking about - with the removal of the braids. And perhaps use the new Early Bird Kit Leia body?
As to Luke, Mark Hamill had a car accident between ANH and the filming of ESB and reconstructive surgery caused him to look a little different. I've read that this in fact prompted the idea for the whole Wampa attack scenerio. So apparently 2-1B is a very competant plastic surgeon as well.

They'd also have to paint her eyebrows a little different to change the expression, but the head is good enough I think.
