The SSG forums upgrade is complete, and here's a list of new features.

Multi-Quote
- You can now tag multiple posts that you wish to respond to by clicking a small button on each post. Once you click the reply button, each tagged post is quoted. To increase usability, by default, only posts within the current thread are automatically quoted. If you wish to quote posts in other threads with multi-quote, you simply need to click a link on the reply page, and the text of those posts will be added without a reload.

New "Mark Forums Read" System
- If you wish to mark a forum read, you can simply double-click its status icon on the index page and the change will be processed without a reload. You can even mark individual sub-forums as read in the same way.

Quote Links to Quoted Post
- When quoting a post, the ID of the post is automatically included with the [quote] tag. When the quoted text is viewed in a thread, a small icon links back to the quoted post.

Improved Buddy List/Ignore List Interface
- The new buddy and ignore list editor allows users to be quickly added and removed from your lists, with assistance for name suggestion along the way. If an error occurs such as a user not being found, you can simply correct the error and continue without reloading the page.

Private Message Preview in Notification Emails
- If you have elected to receive emails when receiving a new private message, the email will now contain more than just the name of the user who sent you the message. The title and body of the message will be included. Any BB codes in the message will automatically be converted to an equivalent plaintext version.

Auto-Resize Oversized Image Attachments
- If a user attaches an image that has dimensions larger than the fourms system allows, the image will automatically resized to fit. This is similar to the auto-resizing of avatars that the previous version of the forums performed.

‘Reason for Editing’ Available on Quick Edit
- You may now include a reason for editing without having to click through to the full editor.

Unique Unsubscribe Link in Emails
- Thread and forum subscription emails now include a link for unsubscribing that is unique to each user. When using this link, unsubscribing from a thread or forum no longer requires logging in.

Save Search Preferences
- Changing your search preferences on the advanced search page no longer requires a page reload.

Improved 'Rate Threads' System
- Rating a thread can be done without a page reload now. Rate a thread like you normally would, but when you submit the rating, you’ll get a notification that your rating was accepted (or if it wasn’t) and the new thread rating will instantly appear.

Show Threads or Posts from Quick Search Popup
- You can now choose to show search results as threads or posts without having to click through to the advanced search page.

Pop Up List of Attachments in a Thread
- The paperclip icon that denotes whether a thread contains attachments is now clickable. It will pop up a window that shows a list of all the attachments in the specified thread, including file size and number of views.

Receive Private Messages from Buddies Only
- You may now select to receive private messages only from users on your buddy list. If a non-buddy tries to send you a message, they will receive an error saying that you do not accept private messages. Administrators and moderators are automatically able to bypass this restriction.

Private Messages Quota Warning
- Once you have reached 90% of your private message quota, you will receive a warning telling you that you have almost reached your quota.

... via private message, thus filling up your PM inbox?

I'm not sure exactly how it delivers it or if it counts against your quota. Anyway, when you get to 90%, you should still have space for 5 more PMs.

I just got it before and it was bold print below the Private messages area on the top right that states your message box is 94%, at least thats what mine showed

ah, good to know!

i find myself distacted by the dark border between the poster information and the post... but i'm sure i'll get used to it...

I don't want to start a new thread, so hopefully my question doesn't go unnoticed: Is there a system for setting up "Post cash" or whatever? I'm not sure what the point of it is but I've seen it on other forums (I only "lurk" because the people there are huge jerks).

Not sure what you're asking about Cappy. Care to explain?

Here's a quote from another site explaining how it's used there:

Coaster Cash was originally a fun aspect of this site that sort of lost any real purpose after a while. You can spend the cash in the "Shop" (link at the top of the page) for special effects to your name, etc. However, some of those effects don't even work in Firefox. You can change color, etc. You can also change your ID if you want, as well as your "title". (Notice mine says "CP Veteran"...I paid to get that title.)

You used to be able to save up Coaster Cash for some really cool things, like the right to moderate for a month, etc. But those are long since gone.

Currently, I have $22,836,084 worth of Coaster Cash sitting in the Bank (also a link at the top). Short of change my ID or title over and over again, there is little use for the money!
I believe it's set up so you earn "x" for every post. The forums at that site look the same as here, so would that feature be bundled in with the package? I'm not saying it's a good idea or anything, I'm just wondering if it's a possibility.

I think there is something like that in the software, or a hack available, but I'd hate to impliment it - it'd be begging for post-padding and all sorts of other problems.

Do it, I want to mod for a month. Oh wait....

I think it's a novel idea myself. It would, like our esteemed collegue JT pointed out, cause a ton of post-padding though. I think it should only be a function in "certain parts" of the forums. THAT would be fun.

yeah, like the star wars movies section... to actually keep it alive now that the movies are done...

the only thing that bugs me about the posting "cash" or reward system or whatever is that everyone just gets the "cash" for posting anything, regardless of value or thought. if it was a system where people rewarded you with the "cash" (either out of their own bank, although i doubt that would happen... or just a "pennies from heaven" type deal) THAT would be cool... like ranking someone's posts and stuff, but they actually GET something for using their brains. what they get, i dunno... i like the custom title under the username. there is other stuff i guess... like maybe the ability to use sig banners? :D

GNT would have been a very, very rich man if post-padding meant a paycheck. :)

There's an auction function, too, that allows the admin to put an item up for bids (i.e. custom titles, mod for a day). Granted, that would also benefit the post padders, but if it was done in a spur-of-the-moment fashion it may not be as bad. I don't think post padding here is too big of an issue. Everyone does it, but there are no real offenders, IMO. Plus, mods should have some sort of authority to regulate someones money (read: take it away), eh?

there is a virtual cash add-on hack that would work somewhat like this. you basically get points for posts, threads and all types of contributions and then can buy access and little image gifts for your postbit. Its very customizable for alot of possibilities, i use it on one of my sites.

The ability to badmouth Grimlock and not get stomped for it? ;)

Screw Grimlock. It's been a long time coming for that turkey.
