It really impressed me that this movie even got made! I read the book John Keel wrote... I must have been like 10 or something. Man...! That book totally creeped me out for months! I'm kinda looking forward to seeing this. I've actually been to Point Pleasant, WV and saw the areas in which the events were to have taken place. Very eerie. Then again... Athens, OH is a pretty creepy place as well!

I loved the book... I hope I love the movie, too!

I want to see this movie but have heard nothing but bad reviews this film.

Probably because Richard Gere is in it. Can't we get some decent actors to do films anymore?

The events took place on BOTH sides of the river near Point Pleasant, WV. There were sightings of a red-eyed winged creature skulking around an old munitions plant and around the hills. People were visited by strange "men in black" and were interrogated by government officials. All of the events led up to the Silver Bridge collapse, which killed 46 people. Strangely enough, the sightings and visitations stopped after the disaster. How's THAT for an X-File, kiddies???

What year was this? I think my aunt and uncle were almost on that bridge when that happened, But they were running late.

JP, did you get to visit the Silver Bridge too?
I would be so spooked looking at that bridge. :(
Even if not for the Mothman, just the thought of the mysterious collapse.
But the Mothman definately adds to the creepiness factor! :D

I found this news item on Compuserve.com. I thought I would post it here because the people in AK who report seeing a giant bird just like the people in WV 35 years ago. Interestingly enough, at the bottom of the article, was a link to a story titled "Something terrible is happening in Alaska that could soon affect us all. Can it be stopped?" It may be a stretch but many people believe that the appearance of a Mothman is a precursor of a tragic event. I'll post the link at the bottom of the article.

It's a plane! It's a bird! It's a...bird the size of a plane! No kidding. The Anchorage Daily News and Reuters report that residents in the villages of Togiak and Manokotak in southwest Alaska have reported seeing a bird that is straight out of "Jurassic Park" with a wingspan of 14 feet. "At first I thought it was one of those old-time Otter planes," Moses Coupchiak, 43, a heavy equipment operator from Togiak, told the Anchorage Daily News. "Instead of continuing toward me, it banked to the left, and that's when I noticed it wasn't a plane."

When the bird disappeared over the hill, he radioed Togiak to tell them what was coming their way and to move the children indoors. Phil Schemf, a raptor specialist, told the Daily News, "I'm certainly not aware of anything with a 14-foot wingspan that's been alive for the last 100,000 years." Coupchiak isn't the only one to spot the bird. Others have seen it, too, including pilot John Bouker, who got a close-up view of it from a distance of just 1,000 feet while he was flying his plane. "The people in the plane saw him," Bouker said. "He's huge, he's huge, he's really, really big. You wouldn't want to have your children out." So, um, what IS it?>>

That movie annoyed me. It may have been a good story to read, but it being made into a movie was utter garbage.

I live here in West Virginia not very far from Pt. Pleasant....and the folks here are P-ed off because the movie was very loosely based on real facts. They didnt even film it here in WVa which angered folks too. The Mothman talking was total Hollywood bull.
The bridge collapse really did happen and I dont think they ever have found out what happened. The Mothman never appeared after the bridge collapse. I have friends from the Pt. P area and they say there really was legit sightings from law enforcement to preachers. I've heard he lives in caverns in the hills and Mountains...

I agree and can see why the folk of PtP would be ticked of about the location, but I guess that is typical of the Movie machine....

...take, for example...Signs. Although it is not a story about crop circles and aliens, (IMO) its publicity campaign and parts o the film were showing crop circles that I have been in throughout Wiltshire since 1993. As far as I can remember, every single formation on the trailer was in England and I was disappointed last year when I found out the film was set in America. If anyone's been to the crop circle epicentre in Alton Barnes, it is eerie eerie eerie.

Having said that, I thought the film Signs (and Mothman) were very very good.

I never thought that the filmakers of Mothman tried to infer that Indrid Cold was the Mothman creature. By the same token, they did not make it clear that it wasn't....Furthermore, the contact wth these disembodied voices was not limited to Indrid Cold, but another entity that was neither used nor even referred to in the film.

I would particularly like to have seen them recreate the lovers-in-the-car scene more faithfully, with its ensuing chase, and the incredible Men In Black visitations which were completely creepy. To the best of my knowledge (and I am hungover, please forgive) this was the first publicised MIB encounter.

The next travesty of fact/fiction mingling will probably be SS's Taken although I am still looking forward to it ;)

Oh well, thank the gods for Farscape. Too bad that's gone down the Swanee too

I saw the movie a month or two ago and thought it was a piece of c***. My brother and I had a good laugh when we watched it.
