View Full Version : Advice on SSC 12" Obi-Wan issues?

I got my 12" SSC-exclusive Obi-Wan today, it's my favorite in the line, but there are a surprising number of problems that I'm considering contacting them over - if I do so, it'll be the first time I've ever contacted SSC for anything.

The issues:

- packaging, the outer shipping carton is too thin as usual but where FedEx is marginally careful with them, this time it was UPS which punched several gouges in the carton, mangled a side edge, and bashed a corner, resulting in minor to moderate creasing to the box itself in several locations;

- the lightsaber blade is the tiniest bit not straight, normally I wouldn't even mention this but it's far from the only issue today;

- one of the lightsaber hilts is assembled sloppily;

- the Grievous blaster's barrel and end cap are slightly out of rotation from the main body, the barrel can be rotated into position but becomes ever so slightly askew;

- the lightsaber covertec belt clip is glued on wrong, instead of in the middle it's glued to the bottom-most edge of the clip;

- the shoulders cannot hold the arms upright in just about any pose.

So I am wondering, should I contact them over these oddball little issues? It looks like I'm being a nitpicker, and perhaps I am, but this is a figure I want to have and want to have right, I don't want my money back but I don't want to wait for a replacement either.

Should I just accept it as it is or try to roll the dice on them getting me an improved one?

Yes, contact them. I did about my Mace. The box was crushed and the covertec on my lightsaber hilt broke off. They are sending me a replacement box free of charge. If I want the lightsaber replaced I have to mail them back the broken part. As for the cosmetic issues, they would probably tell you these cannot be replaced and would offer you a refund. I complained to them about my Forbidden Zone Taylor and all they could do was offer a refund. I'm unhappy about the paint on my Obi-Wan but what can they do? They are not gonna repaint it with the correct color so we can either send them back for a refund or keep them. They should replace the saber and box for you though.

Sounds frustrating. Maybe I'll limit my complaints to the box and belt.

Anybody else have any additional advice?

The one thing that annoys me worse than the paint ops is the fabric of his Kimono. It's made out of an almost gauze-like bandage material with threads that fray and unravel. I trimed up most of these with a pair of clippers but I keep finding new threads unraveling at the seams. I'm afraid that over time this thing is going to just fall apart. I would have selected a more durable fabric for this.

Tycho made a similar claim, my only complaints are that it's too thin so it's somewhat see-through, and just like Anakin's outfit the shoulder elements slip down all the time. I just fold the loose threads up into areas that can't be seen, the only thing I learned from 9th grade sewing class was that cutting threads can lead to more problems as the threads can slip out of their seams.

I just got a response from Sideshow about my crushed Obi-Wan box. They said they are working on solving this issue which is good news. They want me to e-mail them a picture of the damage for a new box.

They didn't ask me to send pictures of my box for Mace. They said my replacement was on the way.

There's a store by my cousins house in tennesse that sells all the sideshow stuff. They told him that they are supposed to be receiving the sideshow Obi-Wan by the end of the week. He talked to them today and they said they received notice from sideshow that Obi-Wan will not be shipping until further notice. Perhaps they realize what a turd they have on their hands and are going to try to fix some stuff before they send them?!? I've been waiting on this figure for a long time, but after all the bad stuff i'm hearing i'm probably not going to be getting one.

Yeah, I had not heard of that. Guess they might want to head off any counterfeting. I'll send the picture, but you think they could check and see the hundreds of dollars spent by me and make an exception.

I just got mine and inspected it... it's not a turd at all. I'm quite happy with it. It's solid and nothing seems to be out of place. *shrug* Did I just luck out or are we only hearing from the people who got bum figures?

I don't think you lucked out. I think people just have different thresholds for what they're happy with. Like Sith Apprentice Anakin. Just about everyone had issues with it, but some people were happy with it, while others were upset. I love evil Anakin, despite the shortcomings. I'm sure it's the same with Obi Wan.

A picture? Weird.

See, this is what I'm concerned over, that I send back my Obi-Wan and they go "oops, sorry, turns out we've made too many mistakes with this one and it needs to wait". But I won't be happy with that belt clip, so I should talk to them.

Well today I just entered the world of 1:6 scale customizing. I re-painted the hair on my Bespin Han a lighter shade and swapped jackets with my Hasbro Bespin Han wich looks much better and dyed it Navy Blue. Man, what a HUGE difference it made! Looks just like him now! Obi-Wan is next. I bought some Cinammon acrylic to use as a base coat. This is fun and makes an incredible difference. I'm just bummed that I had to pay Sideshow $50 to send me a figure that I have to paint and customize myself just to get the results I expected from their prototype photos.

And if you guys haven't already checked it out yet, Sideshow Freaks is a great forum dedicated to Sideshow customizers with some incredible customs: sideshowcollectors.com

how long does it take to get a response from these people at Sideshow? Ive emailed them a week and half ago, and called them 5 days ago regarding my defective Mace Windu belt, and still no response from a CS Rep. wtf is going on?

Well, I have a pretty low tolerance for shoddy goods... especially when this much money is spent on it! Shortcomings versus defects... VERY different! I wasn't thrilled with the arm falling off of Anakin, but I was able to fix that. It sounds like the issues people are having with this Obi-Wan aren't easy home repairs. *shakes head*

You all would be shocked at how 'anal' I am, but my attitude: for $50-$60 bucks a pop, the items and package should be mint.

I am in contact with Aimee at SS almost every figure - out of the 7 Star Wars figures, I have had 5 boxes replaced.

When I asked for just a sticker, they asked me for a pic; when I asked for the whole box with sticker, they just sent it....

I received my Obi Wan today (I was in Ca on a business trip) and someone at the factory had ripped the front flap off a tad so that it tore, then they folded it back and taped it in place, so when I opened this, there was the huge gash with scotch tape on it - and the factory in China sent it. Issues like that causes SS to sometimes ask for pics, to help them communicate with the workers in China.

BTW, Obi Wan is a nice fig...too dark on the paint, but not the disaster that it seemed at first.

While I was home to order Plo Koon, I sent Sideshow the pics of Obi's damaged box, as requested with pic of the exclusive sticker also.

I'm so glad I'm an out-of-box collector... still, mine came in really great condition. *covers head* Don't hit!!!

Well, my Qui-Gon Jinn came yesterday and one of the belt pouches had the top broken, so I think my plan is to complain about the 2 belts and ask them to send me a replacement belt and I'll use that pouch (they seem to be the same).

Finally got a call back from Sideshow. They are sending me a new box for Obi-Wan. The solution to the damaged boxes is: For $8.00 more SS picks out an un-dented shipping box and they put it in another box (like EE) You have to sign up for this service for all future shipments, which I did, because I don't want this hassle again. Though if there are issues with the figure or box, I still can get them replaced.
