Iwao Takamoto, the cartoonist who created Scooby-Doo for Hanna-Barberra, died Monday. He was 81.
Takamoto said Scooby-Doo was based loosely on a Great Dane and named for line delivered by Frank Sinatra in one of his movie roles. Takamoto also created other cartoon canines Muttley and Astro, The Jetson's dog; as well as directed the children's favorite Charlotte's Web.
I still love Scooby-Doo today as much as I did plopping down in front of the TV with a snack after school to watch as kid. Thank you very much, Mr. Takamoto, for your wonderful contribution to my childhood.
