View Full Version : Anyone know of a good site for Japanese calligraphy?

I know this is going to sound like an odd request.
Is there a site where a user can type in (or search for) a Japanese word using English characters, and see how the word would be rendered in Japanese?
F'rinstance, if I looked for "Arashikage," I would see how it was written using Japanese characters.

I just did and apparently you need some sort of language font pack downloaded because the english to japanese translation just came up as a bunch of boxes.
Chux, nothing you request could sound odd...not as long as Tycho is still starting threads.

The best way I would attempt to do this fro general words would be to download a program to type Japanese on an English-language keyboard like Jstar (http://www.all.co.nz/support/howto.htm) I think that's the program--sorry I haven't used it since Japanese III].
The problem there is that compound words are rarely straightforward constructs in Japanese, and I doubt Arashikage would be acknowledged as a valid construct by that program. I think, but others may know better than I do, that newer versions of Windows and/or word processors have built in capacity to type Chinese/Japanese characters on an English-language keyboard, but you'll probably have similar problems.
Otherwise, this site http://dictionary.reference.com/translate/text.html will give you Enlgish-Japanese in Japanese characters as long as you have your computer set up for Japanese characters.
That long-winded explanation out of the way it would be fairly easy to find the two Kanji you need for arashikage. All you have to do is look up storm and shadow in English on the dictionary.com site above and it will give you the individual kanji you can combine to form arashikage. A good Japanese dictionary would also give you the appropriate kanji.
You can also cheat, I googled arashi and kanji and got this: http://japanese.about.com/bl50kanji5_arashi.htm
plugged kage into the url in place of arashi and got this:
Combine the two and you've got stormshadow.
