View Full Version : I'm already planning to buy more figures this year than last year

I just looked over JediMasterSal's list confirmed product list for 2007 (http://www.sirstevesguide.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33884) and there are already 26 figures listed as coming for sure.

While I don't plan to buy each individual one, I do intend to get 33 figures from the ones that are confirmed and listed. To me it's a good indicator that Hasbro is doing something right when I want to buy more figures than they are individually marketing (even if I don't want them all). So it looks like there will be something for me to be happy about. See : :) Happy! Happy!

as I want to be a completist (at least have 1 figure each loose) there are alot of figures for me this year. also I have crossed over into the army building aspect of the hobby. while not as large as some people on this site, my troop building is limited to only 5 - 10 clones / stormies and officers if they are different. so this year so far looks to be $$$$.

Me, too, but mainly because OT features heavily in the new line-up. Also, a lot of the figures are flat out new (Helrot), significantly improved retools (Luke), OT troopers, or flat out supersweet EU, even though I usually hate EU (McQuarrie Fett).

If only they would drop the price to around $5.50, I would go pretty deep into this line. As of now, I see 10-15 30th figures, and about half the "Greatest Hits" figures.

heh, now think if that list that's been circulating is true as well....Man, it's going to be one hellafied expensive year!!!

I suppose we should start budgeting right now... (Like some of us did last year.)

Crap, I had hoped to trim my buying from $6K of last year down to $4k at least. Looks like that's not going to happen. In fact, it looks like it might be closer to $7K worth of stuff...Damn (In a good way, heh heh.)

Same here, except I won't get the EU or Concept figures. There are several figures I plan on getting from the Legends line, most of which were pack-ins or VOTC I skipped the first time around. Just counting the first 4 waves, VTAC, and the Legends lineup, I plan on getting about 20 figures plus the Tantive IV battlepack.

OK:

Concept Figures - no - except the Chewie figure might be useable as another random background alien. (it does not look like a Wookiee - and I can't recall if I saw a figure, or a design picture).

EU figures - most of the characters from comics, but not Marvel repaints of OT characters like blue Darth Vaders.

Resculpts - while I swore I'd never buy another Vader or Luke Tatooine, Hasbro's actually managed to tempt me! I will try again to resist when I encounter these in the store (Vader over Obi-Wan's cloak, Twin Sunset Luke) but I doubt I can help breaking down and buying these. Grrrr.

So - 33 figures so far:

4 Galactic Marines
1 R2-D2
2 Lava Miners
2 Airborne Troopers
1 Super Battle Droid (possibly 2, but unlikely)
6 Death Star Troopers
2 Rebel Honor Guards (I don't need these, but...)
1 Biggs Academy
3 Elris Helrots
1 Jawa and LIN Droid
1 Vader on Obi-Wan's robe
1 Twin Sunset Luke Tatooine (....must...resist...temptation)
5 CZ-3s
1 Umpass Stay
2 Luke Jedi Knights (pending)
-----------------------------
33 figure purchase plans so far. 26 different kinds were offered so far. I'm interested in 15 of the different ones.

So far here's what I want to get:

4 Galactic Marines
1 Mace Windu
2 Concept Fett’s
2 Airborne Troopers
1 Super Battle Droid
2 to 4 Death Star Troopers
2 Rebel Honor Guards
2 Biggs Academy
1 Elris Helrots
1 Jawa and LIN Droid
1 CZ-3s
1 Umpass Stay
1 Luke Jedi Knight (Possibly)
1 Luke Concept
1 Vader Concept (Possibly 2)
10 (heck, probably all the concepts & few EU characters)

If true: 1 of each

MOMAW NADON JEDI
KOTOR DARTH MALAK
PRE-CYBORG GRIEVOUS
DARTH RAVEN
HAN SOLO W/ TORTURE RACK
LANDO IN SMUGGLER OUTFIT
A-WING PILOT
PADME W/BLK LTHR OUTFIT

That's quite enough for now.

I'm going to be cautious and wait until i see pictures added to archives of opened product before i decide whether to buy anything or not. Money is too scarce a commodity these days to be frivolous and just buy a bunch of stuff without checking out quality and so on.

and then, then i'll wait and buy everything loose from Ebay and save money.

My girlfriend is moving in, I'm getting a rock.

Wear rubber gloves when you choose the rock, so you don't even leave fingerprints on it then.

Then wash the rock in lye after you kill her as this should eliminate traces of your DNA such as hair follicles you missed, etc.

Don't do this anywhere that the blood could be found. Drug her and take her to a remote location first if you can.

Do not keep her head in your refrigerator or anything like that!

Oh, and if you're getting an engagement rock, forgo the above and just buy a handgun, then point it at yourself. You know the rest...

Did you know that Tom Leykus is supporting me to replace Dr. Phil in providing relationship advice?

Here's what I'm planning for from the first 4 waves:
X15-20-Galactic Marine
X1-Mace Windu
X1-R2-D2
X2-Mustafar Lava Miner
X10-Airborne Trooper
X2-Super Battle Droid (but possibly more if I really like it. If so then up to 20 for my Geonosis diorama)
X1-McQuarrie Signature Series: Concept Stormtrooper
X20-40-Rebel Sentry Honor Guard (leaning more towards the latter as I nee dthem for the Medal Ceremony scene as well as other various Yavin scenes. (Might customize the long billed hats for these guys as seen at the end of the movie)
X1-Han Solo (possibly-have to see pics)
X1-Luke Skywalker (Medal Ceremony) (possibly-have to see pics)
X1-Biggs Darklighter (X-Wing Pilot)
X10-20-Death Star Trooper
X3-McQuarrie Concept Boba Fett

Wave 3: ANH (Figure numbers cannot be verified at this time) Updated 1/25/7
X1 (to use as Biggs and then X4-5 for custom figs) Biggs Darklighter (Academy Outfit)
X2 Darth Vader (never thought I'd be looking forward to another Vader, but the cloak base is just oo hard to pass up.)
X2 Elis Helrot (Cantina Alien)
X4 Jawa & LIN Droid (I won't need all of the LIN droids, so I'll be trading/selling it off-except for one.)
X6 Luke Skywalker (Tatooine) (Just for the moisture vaporators. (I'll probably donate the Luke figs to charity.
X?? Stormtrooper (with Removable Helmet) Have to see pics, but I know I'll get a few. Just probab;y won't army build past 6 of them. We'll see.
X2McQuarrie Concept Chewbacca OOh yes, I need one carded and one loose.

Wave 4: ROTJ Updated 1/25/7
X3-5 C-Z3 needed for various scenes. Good background droid.
X1 Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight)
X2 Holiday Special Boba Fett
X1-2 Umpass-Stay

So figuring conservatively I'll be getting all but two of them, and a total of 98 figs (and this is the MINIMUM....). Crap, I'm going to be SOOO broke this year...

i think i might buy less than last year. i bought at least 5 and in most cases at least 10 of utapau clones, AT-AT Drivers, Sandtroopers, Death Star Gunners, Firespeeder Pilots, Scout Troopers

for TAC, i'm only going to army build Galactic Marines, Airborne Troopers, Jawas, 501st and Shocktroopers and AOTC clones from the Saga Legends waves and depending on how i like them, the Super Battle Droids. hmmm...maybe it won't be less after all but i will cut down on buying extras to keep carded like i did for TSC.

Heh, it's tough to say your cutting down once you start going through the list of figs eh? I was really hoping to curtail my spending this year, but damn, it looks like a banner year for Hasbro. Maybe they really are listening. One can hope. I believe it's a couple of factors for us seeing what we are seeing. One it's the 30th anniversary. Two, collectors have been clamoring for some of these figs for years so ...three, in a non-movie/(tv) year they need to really hold our attention. Four, since the TV shows are at least a year away, it buys them time to keep the line alive to put out new figs. And five, the tv show is only going to carry them so far. After which, I suspect a sharp decline in SW collecting, so better to get th money NOW for figs than take a chance and wait too long and have the bottom drop from underneath of them.

Whatever the reasoning, I'm just happy they are making this stuff, and more specifically now. I sincerely want to stop collecting in just over 2 1/2 years. Making his stuff now ensures Hasbro gets my money. Waiting until later would not.

I am going to curtail some spending too. My wife wants to go to San Diego this summer so I can go to SDCC so that will take some money. Also, the Legends line is a pass for me, I might buy some clones, might not, depends on what I need. The Order 66 2 packs I might pass on depending on the price(I dont need the JEdi and 15 bucks for a clone is insane). The TAC line has some really good choices and will be awesome if 1/2 the rumors are true.

I agree with JediMasterSal about Hasbro stepping it up to hold their fans' interest in the non-movie year. They did that well in 2006 too, surprisingly. 2005 was a banner year for them with ROTS being the most popular prequel and boasting a huge resurgence in kids' interest. But amazingly, the next year sales kept Star Wars at No.1 according to Toys R Us, and other reports we've seen published.

It's crazy, but 2007 looks even stronger than 2006 - a year of a lot of repaints, kit-bashes, and re-cardings, but which sold extremely well nevertheless. And now 2007 looks to offer us many all new sculpts!

But the TV shows might just pay off. That's all on Lucasfilm's shoulders. Now you'd think they'd have done their best to be ready, because they get paid from Hasbro royalties (one reason why 3 3/4" figures from Hasbro are so expensive when compared to other toy lines).

Honestly, I guess if LFL were a larger company, they might've had people ready to roll with at least one of the TV shows hot on the heels of ROTS' hit popularity. That was not to be the case.

Previously, Sansweet has said the live-action series is planned for 100 episodes at least. Having followed many seasonal shows like Star Trek and Smallville, 100 episodes but a show in a 5 year running, with typically 22-26 episodes per season and at least a 110 episode anthology.

Assuming they can come up with a show about no-bodies that would hit the popularity levels of Smallville or Star Trek: TNG, Hasbro might find themselves rich with action figure possibilities from a TV property. That being said:

Stormtroopers will look the same (various kinds of specialist troops from the OT)
Vader will look the same
Royal Guards will look the same
Palpatine will look the same
R2-D2 & C-3PO (if seen) will look the same
Boba Fett will look the same (once he's 16 or so and covered by the uniform)
Jabba & Gang will look the same (except Yarna might be thinner ;) )
Yoda (if seen) will look the same

So re-issues of those characters can amount to mainly re-cardings.

That's a dozen characters they can re-sell right there.

Meanwhile, they'll have to come up with at least 15 more figures per year from the new series, plus some from the movies that haven't been made yet (see our lists we voted on) to keep the line at 1997 levels: about 36 (new) carded figures in a year (we're closer to 60 all the time now, but I don't know if they'll sustain that in 2008 and beyond).

Well last year I budgeted $20 a week and this year I upped it to $30 a week because that's what I ended up spending. I'm not really worried about the main line. I figure I will get at least one of each. Then the following extras.

4 elite troops
1 lava miner
1 honor gaurd
3 galactic marines
2 airborne troopers
4 SBD
2 Death Star Troopers
4 Stormtroopers
4 Vintage Snowtroopers
2 Rebel hoth trooper (if rumor is true)
3 Destroyer Droids with sheild (if rumor is true)
5 501 clones legends
15 battle droids legends
3 pit droid packs legends
+60
113 figures so $791

Which is about half of my budget which leaves room for the 66 packs, battle packs, titaniums, vehicles, etc that really killed me last year.

And this is just the first four waves. there are several more waves, plus the Legends line... It's going to be expensive enough with Hasbro stuff, not to mention if you collect GG and MR stuff too. Thankfully, I don't collect much MR. In fact at the moment it's just the mini blasters. For GG I get all of the busts and bust-ups that are SW related, but no maquettes, helmets, etc. So my budget for those two manuacturers won't increase much if at all. In fact I think some of my MR budget will be transferred over to the Hasbro stuff.

I'm looking at an easy $7K though this year....sheesh. I REALLY wanted to slow down this year.

I was counting the Legends line and everything we have see rumored. I can't really think of any trooper that would make me buy more than 3 though. The battle droid two packs are the only thing really driving any real figure count on their own. Maybe if they hit some Episode 1 army builders but most of what is rumored 5-8 is single purchases only for me.

The fact that the basic line for 2007 is made up of either completely new or significantly retooled figures, and doesn't have any straight-repacked or slightly redone figures, means that I'll be getting more in 2007. I'll also get several of the Legends line.

Every time I mention that, I think of the Legends burgers at Runza. Mmm them *****es is GOOD.

Well I am planning on getting less this year, since I am not getting 1 carded and 1 to open like I did this year. But since there are alot of great figures and army builders, I may end up spending more. Hope thats not the case. I'm going to buy much less as well, like I did the latter part of last year. I've severely cut back on collecting as I have other priorities now, like school. I will still pick up the few figures I think are cool though, but I am no longer the avid collector and the completist that I once was.

I hate the '07 line. I hate the '06 line. I hate the '05 line. Everytime I say I am going to cut back and spend less, they come out with a ton of figures I want. '05...I'll pick the one's I really like up (ended up with whole set). '06... I'll pick up only new figures (ended up with all new figures, major resculpt figs, and first time on card figures). '07 I really thought that I could cut back this year, but no... Hasbro had to actually make the figures really good this year. So far out of the first 4 waves I am down for all of them. I guess I will end up with a full set again unless it is a straight repack. Here I thought that last year was expensive.........

i punched in the DPCI for the order 66 exclusives today and it came up as 9.99. (not in stock, of course). hopefully that price holds up.

i did some calculating and it seems i'll probably spend around $600 just on basic figures and VTAC. that's not counting titanium vehicles since i don't know the lineup for the entire year yet. and now after seeing high res photos of the galactic marine, i'm sure i'll get more than 10 of them.

so much for spending less!

02-04-2007, 03:09 AM
At least when the TAC first starts shipping, I've calculated that I'll be spending $70 - $100 a month through the wave with Umpuss Stay and Luke Jedi, but it'll slack off when the video game figures hit as I don't have any intention of buying those at this juncture. I've got about 33 figures on my list, the Death Star Trooper comprising the largest amount of repeats (to save him up for the day I can build a Star Destroyer for my figures).

So that's about $235, not including at least $600 for SideShow that I know about (Endor Troopers and Jabba stuff) and add about $64 for the ships (2 V-wings, 1 Sith Infiltrator).

So that puts me at about $904 or so - and I'm sure it will reach close to $1,000 easily. The rest depend upon what other products these companies still have yet to reveal to us, as I'm sure there will be more.

I think this is more than I spent in 2006, but I'm not up to figuring it out right now.

I'll be going lite this year. Save for an odd figure occasionally(and the fact that the Transformers Movie toys are looking sweeeeet), I won't be buying much at all. I'll be repaying student loans come May. :::shivver:::

I think I'll spend the year doing customs with stuff I have already.
