I'm pretty impressed. This vehicle would be on my list, but not quite the priority Hasbro has made of it. Still, I wonder if I have the extra Clone Trooper Pilot figures for this one? I don't recall if I ever bought them or not.

Do you think the R2 unit is a dedicated prop piece like the ROTS starfighters carried?

Meanwhile, it looks cool and I plan to purchase 2 of them.

This is a welcome addition. I didn't know that there were plans to release it so seeing the pictures was a surprise.

I guess Hasbro is capable of surprising some of us.

Well, I'll buy 2 V-wings and try to find some extra Clone Pilots (possibly the black ones) but:

For mid-sized vehicles, how I wished we would get

Gungan Sub
Padme's star yacht
Large Homing Spider Droid
Kashyyyk Droid Army Gunship
Corporate Alliance Tank Droid
Wookiee Catamaran
Clone Swamp Speeder
Twin Pod Cloud Car

These would have all been a higher priority for me with my diorama needs.

To say nothing of the obvious large vehicles we all want.

The R2 looks like a dedicated head - same as the ep. 2 Jedi starfighter. There's no place for the legs to enter the ship....

Definitely. Probably for the best after the way they screwed up the Ep 3 Jedi Starfighter removable droid slot.

I don't think they screwed it up.

The proportions were such that it couldn't actually physically work (in the movie or on the toy) and they gave you a piece to resemble how they cheated in the movie with the CGI R2, but also gave you the option of putting your figure in the droid slot.

They gave you an option. It just wasn't a greatly workable option.

It wasn't a screw-up.

It is designed like the ARC-170 droid slot so it fits droid figures that have no feet, since none have removable feet that means they stick out an extra half-inch. That'd be acceptable on some level, but on the Jedi Starfighter they screwed up further and made the cavity off-set inside slightly so droid slot top doesn't line up with the bottom half quite right, and the droid body has to be jammed in there as tight as possible and the feet are wedged in because the seams are aligned slightly off so the end result is bent mangled droid or it just won't fit at all. It was screwed up so it can't even hold figures in the inaccurate way it was designed.

betch betch betch... LOL

I do like the V-Wing, though. I'd love to get it, but we'll see.

From the pictures, it look pretty cool, but I think my vehicle-buying days are over.

I am just going to buy extra droids and cut them to fit.

The droid head on this V-wing thing seems a bit tall. I know it's got a rim around the base of the head making it sit higher than the fuselage but the actual head looks a bit tall.

I mostly like the vehicle and the deco. there's just one or two things that seem sloppy, like the top wing/fin things just being clip on with those ugly fat clips. and the cockpit canopy being so clean when the rest of the ship is all mucky.

I do concede though that a couple of these and an ARC-170 in formation would look sweet.

I really like the vehicle, but I don't know whether to go ahead and buy this one or wait for one of the 30 repaints we'll likely get in the next 2 years.

I am just going to buy extra droids and cut them to fit.I did that, it was a little more annoying to do than I expected because I had to cut the feet off, then shave down some of the surface barrel elements to get it to line up properly because the JSF's slot doesn't line up right with the small silver vents when they stick out, it makes the body turn so the shoulders aren't parallel to the slot walls.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check that before I do it. I think Vader's Sith Starfighter will be the first one to get the astromech.

Let me get this straight: the Jedi starfighter mold already includes an appropriately colored astromech proxy without legs and half a torso that fits in the slot on the ship.

You guys are buying astromech figures and cutting off their legs and half their torsos, and then sticking them in the droid slots?

Ooooh-Kaaaay.

Make sure to pre-fit the figure before cutting into it, just try it out in the droid slot with the legs raised straight up, this way you'll know whether or not it'll work.

Ooooh-Kaaaay.First off, what's the point of having a droid slot without a real droid in it? The facade piece requires stickers and doesn't look right even with them.

Secondly, I just used an old extra POTF2 original R2-D2 figure I had just replaced on my display.

In 1997, most of my collecting group and plenty of others had a Star Wars dealer store that we all hung out in very frequently. (actually that dated back to 1996) But anyway, I used to go there to check out the new figures even when the owner had them marked at $30ea. In fact, from keeping my ears open, this is where I learned to go hang out at my retailers before the stores opened, so then I could compete with the scalpers.

Well, in 1997, I couldn't wait until I had a yellow striped Han Solo in his vest for my Endor raid scenes.

Using the water-boil method, I disassembled a regular Han figure for the arms, and an Endor Trench Coat figure for the body. I think I used an exacto knife to split the torso so I could open it, put in the non-camaou-decorated arms, and then reseal my new custom figure without a trench coat on. (Hey it took until 2006 to get a softgoods figure from this scene anyway - who could've known then?)

Well I cut my finger open on the exacto knife, and I had to keep pressure on the bleeding until I could get 3 stitches on my finger tip at my college medical center.

Following that debacle, I was so proud of myself after all the blood and sweat poured into my custom Han Solo figure, that I took him with me to the dealer store to hang out there and show him off (this was common with customizers who hung out there). Along with the figure, I showed people my stitches.

The dealer commented: "You cut your finger open taking a Han Solo figure wearing his white shirt and vest, and making it into a Han Solo figure wearing his white shirt and vest?"

I was able to laugh at myself when I explained, "But this Han is from the Endor Raid. You see how he has yellow stripes on his pants?"

This thing with the R2 droids sounds about as idiotic to me.

For the most part I do not personally collect anything EU. There are a couple of exceptions, but when it comes to vehicles I don't invest in all of them one way or the other anyway, but certainly not ones that never saw screentime.

I like the look of the V-Wing fighter, but I am uncertain if it appeared onscreen or if it is just from computer games and/or comics. I've not had a good chance to sit down with Episode 3 to see if this is a movie-accurate version of the ships that flanked the Emperor's shuttle though I suspect that may be the V-Wing's origin.

Since a free moment to confirm this on my own has not been forthcoming I knew that I could get a definitive answer here.

The V-Wing is definitely in the movie.

The one that comes to mind immediately is at the end when it's escorting Palps shuttle with Vaders body on Coruscant. 2 of them escort it and one of them actually lands on the same pad as the shuttle.:)

Yeah, what Slick said. A lot of folks mistook it for a TIE Fighter because with wings up from the front it has a similar profile.

I had a feeling that these were the escort fighters toward the end of ROTS. I asked a couple of friends who were fairly certian that this ship was strictly EU but I had a feeling that this was not the case. Thanks for following up so quickly. This one is now on my want list along with the Sith Infiltrator. I am rapidly running out of ceiling space in the studio, though! Especially if I can ever get my hands on an ARC Starfighter.

The V-Wing is also an EU ship but under a different design. In the old Rogue Squadron Video Game for the PC I believe the Nintendo GameCube. the ship is seen in the last board of the game when you fly one in the Battle for Mon Calamari against the Emperor's World Devastators. although the ship goes through a new design and is in the hands of the New Republic it still shares the same name.

Great post Dark Artist. I remember those ships from the game. I believe I own the PC version.

What's funny is EU fans can see some consistancy in design elements between the 2 ships, and say that the design "evolved" from a swing-wing to a fixed wing.

I was actually playing the game the other day and got to the stage with this ship and thought hey the V-Wing started out as EU and became a new ship for the movie.

This is one ship I'm real excited for. I guess after a year of vehicle rereleases and repaints anything new is welcome.
