Ok, so here's the deal. Many of you already know that I will be headed to Afghanistan VERY soon. So what will I do to keep myself entertained for that entire year? Well, aside from living in a gym and biking just about everywhere I go. I should be in great shape when I get back. lol

Here is my play. I know that I will have high speed internet access in my room, though I'm not sure how much the monthly fee will be.

To date I have purchased:

1 Toshiba Laptop
1 iPod (80GB Video)
1 Slingbox Pro
1 400 disc DVD player
1 500GB External Drive (Western Digital My Book)
1 160GB External Drive (Western Digital Passport)

I plan to buy a 2GB iPod nano.

The plan is to set up my cable box (with DVR) and the 400 disc DVD player to my Slingbox. This will allow me to watch any DVD from the player as well as any television show I record on my DVR. I have also burned several DVD's to my external drives.

So here's the deal.

TV Series:

THE SHIELD - without question. You will get hooked on this and everyone will want to visit you to watch the episodes! I'm not kidding. (It's about corrupt LAPD detectives in an anti-gang squad and the CSI types they work with - and because it's an FX show, almost everything gets shown!)

Miami Vice - sure it's old, but it's still good. Fast cars, fast boats, fast planes, fast women, plenty of shooting. What's not to love about a show that trashed a Ferrari?

Smallville - the prequel to Superman, sort of super-sexed with a Sopranos element to it with the Luthors.

Enterprise - not everyone's favorite Star Trek, but if you've never indulged in Trek, it won't seem plot repetative and it's a great intro to the genre for anyone who knows NOTHING about Star Trek.

Deep Space Nine - the best Star Trek. The first 2 seasons are kind of bland and establish many recurring characters. The third season sets up an intergalactic war. The 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th seasons are Star Wars on television with space battles, ground battles, supernatural phenomenon, and a damned hot ship (The Defiant, entered into season 3). It's worth the trip! The Jem Hadar are like reptillian genetically cloned soldiers, mastered by Shapeshifters that can become anyone, and they ally themselves with the Cardassian and Breen Empires to wreck civil war on the galaxy. The Klingons fight as both enemies and allies, making their brutallity all the more fascintating. There are strafing runs on ground bases as well as Jem Hadar "star destroyers," that ILM did all the effects work for - so it's as good as the Battle of Endor and amazing it was ever shown on television. The effects budget for DS9 was huge. Do not get bored with it during the first 2 seasons, I promise you a great payoff!

Band of Brothers (WWII) - Tom Hanks / Steven Spielberg team up on a true war story about American hero Major Dick Winters from Army Airborne boot camp to taking down Hitler's Eagles Nest. It's both awesome and TRUE! You can't miss this series.

MOVIES:

The Last of the Mohicans
The Patriot (American Revolutionary War)
Gettysburg
Young Guns I & II (Billy the Kid)
Unforgiven
Tombstone (Wyatt Earp)
Legends of the Fall (twisted love stories and WWI)
The Lost Batallion (WWI)
Flyboys (WWI)
The Untouchables (Cops vs. Al Capone's gang in Chicago)
Pearl Harbor
U-571
Saving Private Ryan
A Bridge Too Far (WWII)
Midway (WWII)
JFK - Oliver Stone for you to consider
Terminator I, II, III
Rock Star
Summer School - very funny, I laughed out loud! Mark Harmon and Kirstie Alley
Fight Club - well what would Tyler do?
Hmmm. I find myself censoring 9-11 conspiracy movies from my own list....
(I think you should watch them eventually, but not before or during your mission)
Die Hard movies (Bruce Willis! come on!)
American Beauty
Swingers
The Alien movies

Those weren't on your list that I saw and especially the TV series will keep you busy.

I would definitely go with a bunch of TV sets.

HBO ones are good like Caesar mentioned: The Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Entourage, Da Ali G Show.

Others: House, 24, X-Files, Millennium (If you like the X-Files & I see you have The Lone Gunman), Tales from the Crypt, Freaks and Geeks.

Very nice choice.

TV Shows:
Firefly (I have the complete series and the Movie)

THE SHIELD - without question. You will get hooked on this and everyone will want to visit you to watch the episodes! I'm not kidding. (It's about corrupt LAPD detectives in an anti-gang squad and the CSI types they work with - and because it's an FX show, almost everything gets shown!).

I love this series and have the first 2 seasons on DVD. I need to buy the rest.

Band of Brothers (WWII) - Tom Hanks / Steven Spielberg team up on a true war story about American hero Major Dick Winters from Army Airborne boot camp to taking down Hitler's Eagles Nest. It's both awesome and TRUE! You can't miss this series.

I have heard good things about this series and should really check it out.

Hmmm. I find myself censoring 9-11 conspiracy movies from my own list....
(I think you should watch them eventually, but not before or during your mission)

LOL, I've seen most of these already and consider myself a devout skeptic.;)

The Sopranos, Deadwood, all those great HBO Series.

HBO ones are good like Caesar mentioned: The Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Entourage, Da Ali G Show.

I followed The Sopranos for a while, but lost interest. I do have both seasons of Dead Like Me.

Others: House, 24, X-Files, Millennium (If you like the X-Files & I see you have The Lone Gunman), Tales from the Crypt, Freaks and Geeks.

I have all 5 seasons of 24, but just watched them all again before season 6 started. So I should be good for a while. Besides, once I start a season I can't bring myself to stop. Temptation is too strong!:D

I have the entire series of X-Files, but that takes up like 50 discs! I can hold off for a year.

Scrubs - I just got into this series, but the DVD box sets are like $35.00 each and Comedy Central plays like 4 episodes a day, so I will be covered with a little help from my DVR.:D

Miami Vice - I never really got into this series.

Smallville - the prequel to Superman, sort of super-sexed with a Sopranos element to it with the Luthors.

I have the first 4 seasons, but have sorta lost interest lately. My wife on the other hand has just gotten into it and she will be taking the DVD's with her to Ohio for the summer.

The effects budget for DS9 was huge. Do not get bored with it during the first 2 seasons, I promise you a great payoff!

The Star Trek DVD's are still pretty expensive, so I have passed them up. I watched all the series from the Original to TNG to DS9 to Voyager and Enterprise. I enjoyed them all and will get them...eventually.

I also have the new Doctor Who series, which is exceptional...but expensive! I will add these to my list as well. Though I am surprised no one here recommended it.

Very nice choice.

It broke my heart that they canceled the series, that one and Invasion were outstanding, well written and very well done!

Glad you love The Shield. It is awesome, huh? I didn't know whether I'd enjoy having the show on DVD. Gosh darn right I do! Season 5 is not out yet (comes out in April I believe, as Season 6 will be starting on TV).

You're almost up-to-date on Smallville. You might want to coordinate with your wife if Season 5 is to be bought so you don't have duplicates. James Marstens joins the cast as Brainiac (as I'm sure you've seen the show) and I think it's a great season.

You will love Band of Brothers. The price has come down, too. It used to be around $80 but can now be had for about $60.

The Star Trek DVD's are still pretty expensive,

I think they always will be. Any given season of any given show is about $100 because Paramount knows they can get it from every Vulcan-ear wearing fan who will sell their own Tribble for the show.

If you've never bought any, I'd make DS9 your first venture into buying Star Trek. It's just my opinion, but that is the show I think is most worth it.
