Transformers Movie Bumblebee - interesting ideas that really can't fully deliver as a deluxe, car mode is nice but too many seams, pointless automorph, opaque instead of trans is a sucktastic choice, robot mode has some interesting stuff but is kinda ugly overall.

TF:M Jazz - not to scale with Bumblebee unfortunately, slightly bigger in both modes than it should be. Car mode is nice but no rear window is lame and weapon is not integrated so it snaps onto spoiler. Transform is decent, automorph kinda a wash. Bot mode has nifty lookin' bulky legs but stumpy torso, crappy arms, kinda goofy head; ok articulation. Arms totally doom this thing.

TF:M Wreckage - decent alt mode, messy undercarriage, snow colors are kinda "meh", transform is simple in theory but has some keen stuff going on, automorph is kinda just "there", bot mode is very slick with cool weapons and a big gun in his chest, but the head is always looking 30 degrees down. Only thing that's movie-like is his hands.

SW Vintage Saga Collection2 Luke Bespin - odd likeness from the front, works better from the side. decent in general, not the best but good outfit detailing.

Celebration IV pass

CIV Hasbro McQuarrie Droids 2pack - nice set, overpriced, 3PO is ok but not perfect, but R2 is awesome.

CIV McQ Luke - also overpriced. Cool idea, good but not great detailing. Interesting idea on the lightsaber w/ removable blade, clips onto the belt odd.

Hasbro SW 40 pack of stands - haven't even opened them yet.

Hasbro virgin TAC cardbacks - Hasbro handed one these out on Fri, Sat, Sun at the show, unused Vader, Luke, and finally Stormtrooper cardbacks, nice.

Hasbro CIV exclusive coin - Hasbro handed these out every day of the con, CIV logo on the face.

Galoob Action Fleet Flight Controller autographed by Ralph McQuarrie - at the "Art of Ralph McQuarrie" book booth, they had a pile of these for just $10, blew my mind, really pen-in-hand autographed from a few years ago, I already had the toy but not an autographed box. Ralph doesn't sign anything anymore, can't go to conventions anymore either, but this was the next best thing for me, I had to have it!

CIV free swag - stickers, History Channel SW Legacy lenticular card 4pack (better than the actual show), glossy press releases, WizKids pocketmodel giveaway tray (X-wing, 2 TIE Fighters, cute set and likable for cardboard-type design), WOTC Miniatures Weequay Commander (not too shabby), Collector Panel Darth Vader medallion, Sideshow Collectibles mystery gift card ($30).

CIV souvenirs - metal thermal coffee cup w/ large SW30 and SWCIV logos ($10), ball point pen w/ small SWCIV logo ($2.25), SWCIV logo dog tag (half price day, $3.50), SWCIV logo shot glass (half price day, $3)

Corgi Die Cast TOS Enterprise - nice looking piece, haven't spent enough time with it yet to say more.

SW 30th Anniversary Collection wave 3 entries:
- Vader w/ Kenobi Robe base - great base hampered by short, useless foot peg; figure is ok but not fantastic.
- Luke w/ Moisture Vaporator - dreadful head hampers figure; base is huge and amazing.
- Jawa w/ LIN droid - LIN droid is nifty; Jawa has both good and weak elements.
- Biggs Academy - surprising new head, not quite as good as wave 2 Biggs but good; cloak is cool, outfit is ok but could be better.
- Stormtrooper x2 - a let down; VOTC body except for modified torso that fits funny on lower torso; VOTC body better color but same problems; new Jango-style head in "stocking" is meh; helmet comes off too easy.

Titanium Series V-wing - nice, a little small but looks very good. Wings rotate only to open or closed positions, so no random wandering issues (yay!).

TF:M Ironhide - interesting, some frustrations. Alt mode looks good but hollow back end underside and cannons under the doors are way oversized. Transformation has a lot going on, automorph moves a bunch on the legs at once but left foot doesn't lock down that well. Bot mode looks Decepticon. Face is nasty, weird, light-piped eyes can't be seen without powerful light. Figure's too fragile, pick it up and something always moves out of position. Back kibble is too much but can make a close if long cape. Chest kibble is ridiculous, springs up to all but cover his face and hampers the whole thing. Combo gun is clever. All in all, not a total win but not a loss either.

TF:M Ratchet - some good ideas tossed into a poor figure. Alt mode mainly looks good, green plastic doesn't match green paint, and a few too many obvious seams. Transformation has a few minor clever bits but mainly is simplistic and confused by instructions; automorph is a total waste of time with the kneecap and inner calves popping out slightly. Bot mode is bleh, hate the face, body is too simplistic, not much kibble but it gets in the way of the legs a lot. Claw weapon stinks, axe weapon bland. I was glad to get my money back on this figure, lucky that it had defects.

TF:M Bonecrusher - CRAZY!!! Got on sale from Target. First off, mine has tons of flash on almost every part that I'll need to shave down. Alt mode is pretty decent, but they use a sticker for 1 piece of deco. Alt mode is mistransformed in package, rear wheels are tipped way in and bomb-claw arm is not set to the right - easy to miss both of these. Transformation is wild, not much like anything else, and they add several opening panels they didn't need to just to make it look better; no automorph either. Bot mode is a bit small but looks very tough. Head is way too simple though, almost looks like a preschool toy. Body doesn't have elbows, lots of forearm kibble, and weird hands which can unfold to get very long and silly, but on the whole they don't seem that bad. Legs are neat. All in all, weird but nifty and worth getting.

TF:M Blackout - Also on sale from Target. Didn't expect this, but I like it. Alt mode is really nice, licensed mostly-accurate Sikorsky Pave Low, some of the blue-gray parts are blackwashed which looks nice, I wish all the parts had it. Nose has small flip-down landing wheel. Head shows from belly but you can't really tell. Cage in back springs open to flop out Scorponok minifig (nothing special, off-white plastic with meh black paint wash) who has spring-loaded tail to help push him out. Plunger in back spins rotors (they don't spin free otherwise) and turns a peghole on underside to drive Dlx Scorponok's hands when attached. Transformation is interesting, seems like they tried to be faithful to the movie version more than any other but still staying a good toy; lots of clever stuff going on everywhere, automorph seems pointless but is more necessary than it seems as it realigns backpack and hips in a significant but subtle way. Bot mode is better than I expected, not as much kibble, and has good poseability. Shoulders are a little flimsy. Head looks amazing, only movie head I like so far, blackwash brings it out perfectly and red lightpiped eyes look fantastic (eyes have sculpting but lightpiping doesn't carry it forward when active). Huge backpack can be removed, folded at front, and slipped over shoulder to peg into the hand to become rotor weapon. Not perfect, but a very decent entry.

Hauled in $6.50 from Target, refund price adjustment since I bought 3 deluxes a few weeks ago at full price and this week they're on sale, just handed receipt and explained.

VTSC2 Snowtrooper - thanks to my friend Rick for sending this to me. Great figure, removable helmet stays on ok on mine and lets the helmet turn without looking weird which is fantastic. Articulation is very good, mid-torso universal joint is limited but a great touch. Soft goods kama looks decent. Body has amazingly tight sculpting, very realistic details, easily the best trooper in the Vintage-style line. Ultra light blue in some areas is a little strange but seems right. Weathering paint looks decent. A real winner.

Transformers G1 Reissue Soundwave - thanks to Figgy B for stashing this sucker for me! I had totally given up on finding one, hasn't been in stores in ages. Great set, nice presentation (even though the tray in mine was inserted backwards), not really worth $30 but not like you can get it elsewhere. Soundwave still rules 23 years later, Laserbeak is cool, and Ravage is nifty. Soundwave's modified with the larger chest panel to hold 2 cassettes, but under his battery hatch it has the cool old '70s/'80s Takara and Hasbro logos as part of the mold.

TF:Movie Brawl - came in the mail finally. Nifty deluxe vehicle, cannon is too long though and doesn't elevate. Transformation is kinda frustrating, automorph is a nice little trick though. Bot mode is very frustrating because it doesn't hold together, would be a cool little deluxe if the damn shoulders and back didn't pop out all the time.

figrin bran
06-10-2007, 04:09 PM
I'm glad you were able to get the Soundwave, JT. so THAT's what was really odd about that package - the backwards tray.

Brawl was actually the first movie toy i got last Sunday. didn't like the shoulders at all and wish i would've just bought Bonecrusher instead.

06-10-2007, 07:42 PM
Yeah, that tray thing was weird, I look in and it's the back of Laserbeak and Soundwave, but Ravage is normal. Of course, Ravage looks the same on both sides. The tray design is odd, what'd be the front in most sets (the flat part) on this one is actually the back, but someone put it in there from the front - I don't think this set was opened though, at least not down to the toy level since the tray was still taped and the stickers unused.

Brawl has been frustrating me all day now, the right shoulder keeps popping out no matter what and I can't figure out the back alignment at all. I shaved down the right peg a teeny bit and it didn't really help, I changed the way I thought about the back and pushed the black part in all the way to the back of the head, then let the turret back dangle loose and connected the shoulders to the body to lock it down - now it holds a little better, the left peg is acting like this is it's correct state even, but it's still unacceptably tenuous overall. A real shame.

You could try returning Brawl to where you got him, or even complaining to Hasbro I suppose.

Transformers basic Arcee Target-exclusive - saw pics of this Energon-repaint and was impressed, plenty of her at Target and I bought one. Repaint is vastly superior to the original in every way except that it's Chromia's colors instead of Arcees, but these colors are far more appealing and restrained and attractive, and they fit the sculpt way better. The darkish-blue has a metallic quality that looks amazing up close, the silver paint is quite nice, and even the silver plastic ain't too bad. The paint really suits her headsculpt nicely, brings out her face right, and orange eyes look good. Her weapons and canopy are translucent smoke-colored plastic. I wish they had been able to give her different weapons and ditch the spark-crystal-holder, the bike mode looks tons better without all that crap, but it's still a nifty figure none the less (still wish she had better hands though). Grade: A-

TF Real Gear Longview - nifty, but not as solid work as Spy Shot 6. I immediately rotated the display sticker to its correct orientation. Alt mode is ok, transformation is fun and has a clever way of doing the torso, bot mode has good hero proportions and looks decent all around. Articulation is good but as good as Spy Shot, sculpting is simple which works but lazy around the legs leaving a gap at the knee and no pegholes in the fists. Paint on the helmet is sloppy, use of light blue-gray plastic hampers head and hands. Grade: B

TF Titanium Series War Within Optimus vs Megatron - A real letdown, Megatron looks decent in bot mode but with several issues (head's too small, gun doesn't fit on forearm right, shoulders pop out) and has an incredibly lame alt mode. Optimus is the same as the first one right down to the failures, this one has weaker hips and knees than my original even! Included comic is WWi 5 of 6 with a variant cover, the issue is where Prime and Megs stand around watching TV basically, and the action focuses largely on Grimlock being the biggest badass ever. And it's 2 for the price of 2, but they don't give you the stands despite mention in the instructions. Set grade: D (if you have Optimus already), C- (if you don't have either fig)

SW TAC Concept Chewie - my second one, I picked this one up because it was right in front of me and had great paint.
