I hadn't connected that rather insipid line from Yoda in TPM to the OT before, then a few days ago I finally remembered this, I'll accent the parts from the script...
VADER: Impressive...most impressive.

Luke jumps down to the platform where he is separated from
Vader by the steaming carbonite pit. He raises his hand. His
sword, which had fallen on another part of the platform,
swiftly jumps into his outstretched hand and is instantly
ignited. Vader immediately lights his sword as well.

VADER: Obi-Wan has taught you well. You have controlled your fear... now release your anger.

Luke is more cautious, controlling his anger. He begins to
retreat as Vader goads him on. As Luke takes a defensive
position, he realizes he has been foolhardy. A quick sword
exchange and Luke forces Vader back. Another exchange and
Vader retreats. Luke presses forward.

VADER: Only your hatred can destroy me.So honestly, what's the connection here? What's the intention? Why does this line play so smoothly while the frog's line in TPM come across so meaninglessly?

You only just now made the connection? Yoda mentioned something similar in ESB - "Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they."

I think the better connection to ESB is in ROTS when Dooku tells Skywalker that he has hate and anger but he doesn't use them...so he does use them, kills the old codger, and then 2 movies later he goads Luke with the same pitch.

Also in ESB, as Luke is leaving Dagobah, Obi-Wan tells him, "Don't give in to hate - that leads to the dark side."

Fear really guides a lot of what we do, mainly, the fear of losing one's freedom. That doesn't just mean freedom in terms of physical imprisonment, but freedom from emotional entrapment as well. It is very easy to become a prisoner to love and/or hate. We can love someone so much that it disables our ability to love anyone else, whether they return that love or not. Or we can hate someone so much that the anger sets the tone for who we become.

That is the ultimate lesson of The Force....the "dark side" is our failure to let ourselves be free of those bonds. For better or worse, the reason Catholics don't allow Priests to marry is so that they are free to be the "Father" to the congregation. Giving your heart to another entraps you. Hating someone entraps you. That is what Yoda wanted Luke to understand. That is what Vader wanted to use as a tool. Fear is a powerful emotion and a tool wielded by the purely evil. Yet love can also have the same imprisoning outcome. The "balance" of both can keep one alive and also allow us to truly "live." Letting either love or hate to take control is ultimately debilatating.

You only just now made the connection? Yoda mentioned something similar in ESB - "Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they."Yes, but they weren't the exact same words the way Vader's were, and Yoda isn't using them in a procession, his language suggested they were separate yet related issues.
