A few days early, plus it's been a whole year of answers! Here's Hasbro's answers to SSG questions for June 19th, 2007. Thanks again to Hasbro for the answers, to all the folks who sent in questions and especially those who voted on them.

Hasbro Q&A for the week of June 19th

Q: While fun on paper, in realistic settings chase gimmicks such as UGH and 1-per-case McQuarrie Concept figures seem to cater not to people that aren't in this hobby for the enjoyment of it, but rather to those here looking to turn a quick profit. With the already hard-to-find McQuarrie Stormtrooper and upcoming sure-to-be-popular Animated Debut Boba Fett both coming in UGH variations, this will further promote that type of scalping. Have you looked at ways to promote chase figures while still making sure they end up in the hands of folks who will truly appreciate them, such as mail-in promos (send in 5 POPs plus S&H for a chase figure) or online sales or other methods?
A: This is a good idea, but collectors for the most part like to shop at the brick and mortar stores and that's why we created the UGH concept - to reward those who like to hunt. In the past several years, it seems that scalpers had largely come to ignore Star Wars, but do to recent success it seems that scalping has raised its ugly head again. The UGHs unfortunately feed into this, and we are releasing more UGHs and more of each this year than we did last year to give more fans a chance to get one (or more). As answered previously, figures that are 1/case are desginated as such for tooling capacity reasons and we will be chasing many of the McQ figures and the Animated Boba Fett throughout the year (like we did with Cody and Scorch last year).

Q: Since Hasbro ran out of time making it unable to plan and bring a full presentation for Titanium Series at Celebration IV, might we get some info on what's coming in the line, especially beyond the small handful of new pieces that were there?
A: Beyond what we have shown, there is only one more wave. It's a pretty cool wave, with one new retool based on a McQuarrie painting - a concept Snowtrooper on Snowspeeder. Beyond that, there is a Hoth deco AT-ST, a new AAT, a revised V-Wing, and a black chrome AT-AT. That'll be it for 2007, but 2008 will be chock full of goodness Titanium 3" vehicle front, so stay tuned!

Q: After a decade, you've given us badly-needed updates of minor but essential characters like R5-D4 and Biggs Darklighter X-wing pilot, and while they are very welcome, these new versions falter where their earlier, poorer POTF2 predecessors did not: the new versions are missing some of their movie decos. How does it happen that 1998 Biggs' helmet has the full design with the stripe and pattern elements on the back while the 2007 version is just plain white? How is it that 1996 R5-D4 has the blue slot on the front painted blue while 2006 is missing this, as well as the 3 red panels on his back that only the Kenner vintage version correctly employs? We do enjoy these new figures, but why do things like this get missed thus leaving the updated figures less than all they could be?
A: Glad you appreciate the new sculpts. As always, we strive to get all the details right, but on a line as comprehensive as Star Wars, and with the number of sublines that are fully engaged, we (and Lucasfilm) will occasionally miss a detail. It should also be pointed out that not all the reference is consistent from scene to scene, and without knowing the real scoop on these two, it's possible that there was ambiguity in the reference. In any case, we do work hard to get the details right but we don't claim to be perfect! We just hope that collectors enjoy the end-results and continue to stick with us on the exciting path we're on.

And the questions at ActionFigs.com (http://www.actionfigs.com/index.php?categoryid=12&p2_articleid=1384):
- In several Q&As, you've been quoted as saying that the environment pieces included with many figures in this year's basic figure line have been stretching your budgets and probably won't be carried forward in 2008. Since the only deluxe-pricepoint line your SW brand enjoys right now is the Vintage-style and Comic 2-Packs, how about doing a new deluxe line that focuses on more environment pieces and similar large, movie-derived accessories?
- Since you're reissuing older figures anyway in the "Saga Legends" greatest hits line, how about revisiting the robot who saved the man who saved the galaxy, 2-1B? 2-1B has dialogue and has become a fan-favorite over the years, yet hasn't been available for a decade even though there's a creepy lookalike in the birth of Vader's armor" scene in Episode III, so this seems like a good fit for the Saga Legends line. Or better yet, how about an all-new, better-articulated 2-1B?
- From your display at Celebration IV, we noticed that the Dutch Vander Gold Leader rebel pilot sculpt is being used twice MORE for 2 new rebel pilots, Lt. Lepira from the Gold Squadron Y-wing, and from the Rogue Squadron #24 Comic 2pack Hobbie figure. While the Dutch Vander sculpt is pretty nice, many collectors believe it should not be used as the standard rebel pilot body due to its height and oddly-posed arms, not to mention a specific uniform that differs in some ways from other orange-clad rebel pilots. With these 2 new entries, that's 5 rebel pilots - Vader, Wedge, Biggs, Lt. Lepira, and Hobbie - all with the same height (Wedge being especially too tall) and with identical bodies and unusual poses. Might Hasbro start using a different pilot body that isn't as tall or preposed or so identical in costume layout?

So, funny that they won't reissue 2-1B because fans didn't rally around him during some poll, but they seem to shoot down the idea of a resculpt altogether. Meanwhile, we're getting Bossks at a rate of two per year, and they still haven't made any of the other figures fans keep asking for.

1 more wave of Titaniums? I like the idea of a snowspeeder, but to release the V-wing again and 2 AT-AT's?

Funnier to me that people HAVE rallied around Yarna d'al Gargan like mad and we still don't have a figure of her. What is the proper rallying rate that warrants a new figure?

"50,000 no less"

heh heh. couldn't help getting a quote in there, especially since it's appropriate. We've heard time and again that the 50,000 figure mark is just the point at which Hasbro starts to turn a profit. (I think that's bunk, but who's to really say and we'll never get a chance to see this proven.) Anyway, I doubt we as fans and collectors can create an accurate online petition of at least 50K names to get a figure like this made.

Besides, if we are just able to rreach that point, what's the point for Hasbro? They are looking to make money off of this. We'd need to get at least 70K people to sign up IMO for Hasbro to really listen up.

And to be frank, there just isn't that many people who are members of all of these collecting boards.

Should we get a figure like Yarna? Yes I say. I've seen it asked for time and again on nearly all the major sites. Is it enough to change Hasbro's mind to make it? Apparently not yet. It would be the joke of all time if they decide that Yarna will be the last figure ever made by them...(Now let's hope they don't take that last comment to heart.)

Yeah, Yarna was the main one I had in mind when I talked about them not making figures that fans have rallied for.

I'm totally serious here: Would it be rude or improper to ask why they go to only one particular fan site for their polls and such? I don't know if it's possible to not single out one particular site, but I avoid rebelscum's forums like the plague (and try to avoid the main page as much as possible). It's very fanboy-oriented, the posters are downright antagonistic, the layout sucks, they love inaccurate rumors, and I for one frigging hate those stupid ads that pop up whenever you scroll over totally random words. And yet I spend just as much money on their toys as most folks at rebelscum. I honestly feel that to choose one fan site that not everyone frequents shuts out a lot of people. I know that I can't be the only person this applies to.

Trouble is, I can't think of a way to ask that diplomatically to save my life.

That's all well and good but when stores don't want to order because they're full of Saga Legends Saga 2 (when the stores probably thought they were getting new product even) then it makes the novelty of going to a physical store quite worthless. Even if the figures were showing up, I'm sure the number of collectors that would love to find the McQ figures in person far, far, far out number those that care about the gold coins.

Honestly, they basically just said "Yup, we know they're popular so we're going to make up for it by having GOLD COINS (OOOH YOU LOVE SHINY THINGS) WIDELY AVAILABLE meanwhile the figures you want are being carried away by the Hotwheels scalper. And that's the way we like it (past examples given)."

So for an entire half year, all we're getting is 11 more ships (assuming the Turbo Tank wave is the latest one in your area). I'm guessing so they can focus on Transformers and Marvel Titaniums hitting sotres (and not hear us complain about them invading Star Wars pegs since it won't matter). Thing is, if Transformers keep pegwarming as well as Marvel, will stores want more Titanium product on the pegs in '08?

What is the proper rallying rate that warrants a new figure?

I've yet to hear a valid reason for not adding Yarna to an assortment.

She has six breasts, warts, is extremely ugly, and is a prostitute in the EU. I seriously doubt that she has any (or, if she has any, then not much) selling power with kids, which from Hasbro's point of view is a main problem.

Anyway, at least they more or less said that they'd be doing new versions of Darth Maul and Obi-Wan (we already knew about Qui-Gon) in 2008 so I'm happy for that.

Maybe it is time for the Yarna supporters from all the major SW collecting websites rally together in one location. Rebelscum seems to be the place since that is where Hasbro seems to go. I don't know exactly how to pull it off, but maybe if each website has a "Dear Hasbro" type section with a Yarna (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=1343) thread, someone could cross links from all the other sites.

Pish to that EU book. it's one of the few I've read and it truly deeply sucks. Cubs? Removable warts? only fat coz she's bloated with water? Running off with Doallyn and playing happy families? bleeeurgh! And I still say it's just fat rolls not breasts. it's just a strappy top like Lyn Me and Oola have a couple of ribbons to cover their torso/lady bumps. Yarna has more strappage coz let's face it who wants to see a pastey white belly wobbling all over the place?

and if yarna is a prostitute then what pray tell is Oola? Jess? Arica? What the heck is leia supposed to be once she's shoved in that skimpy outfit? it's al one and the same. Y'know what? if i wa a kid i'd buy the ugly fat alien looking female over some skinny chick in a bikini. you're telling me young boys of eight, nine and ten want dollies to play with? nah-ah. that doesn't wash.

Hermi odle is just background padding and we can have a figure of him with his dead animal guts tongue but not a dancing chick that fits with the band? there isn't a valid reason besides that stupid eu book and that can be discouted anytime by simply writing a new backstory for yarna same as SW.com is doing for tons of characters. Damn i'll even write her a new backstory myself. two minutes:

"Gargan. The fat dancer in Jabba's palace. Fond of a meal she feasts on barbequed ribs of womp rat. which is a favourite dish at the court of Jabba.
Gargan has been a dancer for many years at the palace and her ugliness appeals to Jabba's perverse sense of humour. She is his chief dancer in charge of training any new dancers brought into the palace. She's also adept at knife throwing. Several narrow bladed knives are concealed in her elaborate headdress. from time to time she has used her skills to help foil assasination attempts on jabba. It is for this reason that jabba has spared her the same fate that befell Oola."

there ya go problem sorted. and nifty accessory feature added to increase play attraction. she's now a knife thrower. no mention of any of that lamo EU nonsense aside from obviously including the dancing. it's that easy. just change the damn backstory. get the figure made. end of.

I was afraid that'd happen too, but hoped that a SHORT question would allow them to answer both halves. Clearly I was wrong. :(

1 more wave of Titaniums? I like the idea of a snowspeeder, but to release the V-wing again and 2 AT-AT's?Yeah, that answer utterly killed me, the AT-AP coming out next month will be the final new Titanium of the year, that stinks.

Funnier to me that people HAVE rallied around Yarna d'al Gargan like mad and we still don't have a figure of her. What is the proper rallying rate that warrants a new figure? They're talking about re-releases. And they have heard us complaining about Yarna, they said they'll get to her in a year or so, my guess is that means they had no idea there was interest and they added her to the schedule only recently, it takes 18 months or so to develop it and get to market. I'm pretty much giving up on telling them Yarna stuff, I may mention it in person if I see them again but I think they've got the message.

But hopefully they just recognize the Titanium Series brand is spread WAY too thin right now and are taking a breather.

Yeah, but we're basically looking at 1/3rd of a year without new Titaniums, and over half a year where Titaniums had more than 1 new release per wave.
