The VES(visual effects society) compiled a list of the TOP 50 movies which changed special effects. Below are the rankings.

Lucas has the entire OT for damn good reason. Harrison Ford claims 4 of the top 20(20 % aint bad) movies, and Yes GG, Citizen Kane makes this list also....

On a quick skim, that list looks pretty solid really. Darby O'Gill & The Little People was the only oddball, but I'm sure Sean Connery doesn't want us to think about that too much.

Citizen Kane has that transition from miniature rainy rooftop through the skylight, that's incredibly innovative for its time and still holds up today, not like the little people working on the scaled down cardboard plane at the end of Casablanca. :p

And where is Episode 1? Jar Jar was an amazing achievement in special effects.

Man, that list is all over the dial! I wonder what criteria they're basing their selections on? We're talking photographic effects (like blue screen), stop-action, CGI just to name a few.

stillakid: what's going on here? What's your opinion?

Its supposed to be a list of the top 50 movies that changed special effects for the industry. I would imagine it includes all the above that you mentioned. The reason why its all over is because of the way each movie set new standards for SE.

I guess I need to clarify a little (and I think you may already have answered it KH). I was wondering since there are several types of visual effects, does this list reflect a representation of the fifty best films in general (meaning the 1-50 has no particular value as to its rank) representing various effects, or is the Society putting forth it's opinion as to the fifty films in rank of importance. If it's that latter, I'd like to know the criteria for their decisions. I'm very curious about that process, if, in fact these are ranked films in order of their perceived importance.

I would believe it is in the order of importance to the movie industry. I would like to know what factored into the decision as well.
