I'm trying to locate a decent book on Vietnamese history, excluding (or at least not focused on) the Vietnam War. (Nothing against the war, but it's the sole focus of almost everything I can find, but I don't really need that info for what I'm looking for.)

This is proving to be amazingly difficult. So far, the only book I've found that looks even halfway decent is a pretty flimsy overview of the history of all the countries in Southeast Asia.

A good collection of legends written for the adult-level reader would be nice, too.

About all I need is informative, reasonably complete, obtainable, and (of course) written in English. (I suppose I could find something more easily if I read Vietnamese.)

Would this help?

Vietnam: A History by Stanley Karnow

Yes, it focuses on the war in Vietnam, but there are a few very good chapters at the beginning of the book that sketch the social and political history of the country prior to that.

I finally finished the sitting-on-my-bookshelf-for-months Star Wars and History by editors Nancy Reagin and Janice Liedl. It is 10 or 11 essays (with pictures! ) by experts who relate world history events (including various wars, including Vietnam) to plotlines and characters in the SW universe. The writers are clearly fans (some, even of the cartoons and EU books) and knowledgeable about their history. As a history book, it could be a quick overview for different eras and countries; there are several pages of endnotes in the index. It's nicely done, well-written.

There is a nice one-volume encyclopedia of the Vietnam War I've checked out from my library. Gives good descriptions on people, events, equipment, etc...

You can't go wrong with the Time-Life series on the war. A library should have that. I've picked up a few volumes, used, at bookstores and flea markets.

There's another one I have on my shelf called the History of the Vietnam War. Lot of pictures and maps.

There's also the Vietnam War magazine. www.thehistorynet.com (http://www.thehistorynet.com) is the publisher, and you can see what's in the latest issue, what's archived, and a lot of times there's web-exclusive articles. This particular company publishes WWII, the Military Quarterly, the Civil War, World History, and the Armchair General, to name a few. When I had more disposable income 10+ years ago, I would get several of these magazines each month.
