Hey folks, UK and I decided to do another challege. Rules are you can watch any movie or short that has been nominated for, or won an Academy Award. We'll run the challenge for a month, starting at midnight tonight, 1-24 through 2-24 ending at midnight. We'll keep track just like we did back with the other challenges. If so, if you can also put in what the movie was nominated for as well. Here (http://www.oscars.org/awardsdatabase/index.html) is a good place to check if a movie you'd like to watch has been nominated. Enjoy!

I lucked out on that one, since I'm home sick and feeling near death I found it on HBO just after the Robert Loggia intro scene, so I watched it almost in its entirety...I love that movie, even as a kid I loved it when my old man would watch it, of course now I appreciate it a whole lot more.

I'll probably watch a DVD tonight and make sure it's Oscar caliber.
Plus I'm calling in tomorrow too, so I should be able to catch another one or two between naps.

Natalie Portman and Clive Owen were both nominated for Supporting Acress and Actor...both very good performances, in my opinion, with Owen's being the best in the film.

I just put in my Life as a House DVD in error, I was thinking of the Golden Globe nom for Supporting Actor for H-Christ (as well as SAG nominations for H-Christ as well as Kevin Kline for Actor).

Anyway, it's a great movie and I don't want to stop watching it now that I started, so I'm giving it honorable mention here. lol

Closer (2004)
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Nominated:
Supporting Actress- Abigail Breslin
Best Picture

Won:
Best Original Screenplay
Supporting Actor- Alan Arkin

I love this movie, saw it once in the theater then again on DVD and a few times since on HBO, including today. Just a good movie all around, the whole cast is good with Alan Arkin's "Grandpa" being especially humorous.

Steve Carell rocks in this movie as well.

Closer (2004)
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Jackie Brown (1997)

Nominated: Robert Forster, Supporting Actor

What can I say about Jackie Brown? It's definitely Tarantino's best movie and Forster was awesome as Max Cherry, but IMO they could have nominated several others for their performances ESPECIALLY Pam Grier as Jackie and Michael Keaton as well. Great movie, great story, great acting. Great soundtrack, too. Oh, and Sid Haig is in it as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Best thing about being sick is laying in bed and/or on the couch at home and watching movies.

Agree to disagree.

I'm sorry Mr. Burgundy, but No, there's no way that's correct. I'll take IMDB's #5 movie!!!! Not that it matters, just an opinion and preference. Now take me to Pleasure Town!!!

BTW - Last night I was going to watch an Oscar movie but that damned tumbling tumbleweed hooked me at 1:00 am on ShoTime.

No sh*t man. I was really hoping I could include that one somewhere but no, it was never recognized by the Academy. Since we are somewhat on the topic of the Coen Bros., I will definitely watch Fargo and Oh Brother Where Art Thou? during this challenge, and possibly (but not likely) The Man Who Wasn't There (only seen this one once, had no idea it was nominated for an Oscar either), I also plan on going to see No Country for Old Men on Sunday, which I am really looking forward to.

January 24th
Citizen Kane (1941)
Watched this in film class. While I recognize the technical breakthroughs of this movie, I found it to be pretty boring. Why AFI named this best movie ever made, I'll have no idea. "The Godfather", "Star Wars", "Schindler's List", etc. are all better than this.
Won: Best Original Screenplay
Nominated: Best Picture, Best Actor (Orson Welles), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music, Best Sound

January 27th
Rain Man (1988)
This was on TV, and I haven't seen it in a while, so I decided to watch it. Great movie, with great acting from Dustin Hoffman. Also, it should be noted that this was one of the only good performances from Tom Cruise.

This was another one I had to watch for film class. About the late-'50s quiz show scandal on the show "21". It started out good but after about an hour and fifteen minutes in, it started to slow down a bit too much.

I will actually disagree with you here. They are 3 very fine movies, no dobut about it, but I feel Pulp Fiction and Shawshank are more re-watchable. I have only seen Gump a couple of times (I own it on DVD too), but I've seen Pulp Fiction and Shawshank a couple of hundred times (maybe a slight exaggeration, but I've seen these two movies a ton, of course both of them are in my Top 5 too). I still find it hard to believe that Shawshank was snubbed, got 7 nominations, but not one win; just absurd - one of the greatest movies of all time (and I'll actually agree with IMDB's rating too, #2 on their top 250 list). But yeah, I think Shawshank should have won for best picture, and a lot of the other categories it was nominated for; same with Pulp Fiction. That was a crazy year for the Acadmey though, 3 damn good movies, so a couple had to lose.

I might be watching "There Will Be Blood" tonight, so I expect to revisit this thread before the day is through.

It was a really good movie but I personally liked No Country For Old Men better. However, Daniel Day-Lewis was amazing, definitely Oscar worthy. Without him, that would have been a decent movie but I can't see it being a Best Picture without Lewis.

Forrest Gump (1994)
In 1994, three really great movies were up for the Best Picture nomination: Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and The Shawshank Redemption. I guess one of them had to win. Tom Hanks was great in this and out of the three movies mentioned, I think this one is the most re-watchable. Whenever it's on TV, I sit down and watch at least parts of it.
Won: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominated: Best Supporting Actor (Gary Sinise), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Sound

There Will Be Blood (2007)
I posted a more thorough review in the "What have you watched recently?" thread, but I thought it was an excellent movie, and I can see why it got so many Oscar nominations. Daniel Day-Lewis was excellent as an oil tycoon whose morality deteriorates the wealthier he gets.

The Piano (1993)
Another film class viewing. This was a good movie and it had some great acting in it. Plus, Harvey Keitel's always cool in whatever he's in. However, it's not a movie that I really feel the need to see again.
Won: Best Actress (Holly Hunter), Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin), Best Original Screenplay
Nominated: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing

Parenthood (1989)
I hadn't seen this one in a while. It was on HBO OnDemand so I decided to give it a viewing again. Has some really funny moments. Steve Martin's always great.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
All the hubbub regarding "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" inspired me to watch it again. I'll always love this movie. It's a classic.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
While I love this movie to death (and Short Round is one of the best sidekicks ever), I think this should serve as a lesson to never cast an actress for a role just because you're bangin' her. Man, Kate Capshaw is still annoying as hell. I'd even take the Nazi from "Last Crusade" over her.

And that about wraps up my Tommy Lee Jones movies. Love The Fugitive, he did an outstanding job in that movie and totally deserved that Oscar. I also love the Janitor from Scrubs on the train... "KIMBLE!" Thats great how they wrote that into the show. Good stuff.

Watching a really good one right now that I can't wait to add to my list.

I watched this on TV last night because I hadn't seen it in a while. I'd say this is one of the better remakes out there. Too bad it was followed up by a lacking sequel. But I don't seem to recall seeing this one in theaters, as this came out about a week before "The Phantom Menace", so I guess I was too preoccupied with that to focus on anything else.

Nominated: Best Sound (I was surprised it wasn't nominated for special effects. The sandstorm scene looked good. But I guess it wouldn't have mattered, because this year I seem to recall "The Matrix" taking home all the technical Oscars.)

This was such a great movie, probably the best prison movie out there, and probably the best acting performance of Morgan Freeman's career. As a bonus, this was the first time I had seen the unedited version of the film, courtesy of HBO On Demand. I had only previously seen it on TNT (and this movie is always on TNT).

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
I usually run a LOTR marathon at least once a year. I figured now was the best time because of the Oscar movie challenge, and because crappy weather (snow, freezing rain) means staying indoors for a while. I'm just watching the standard theatrical versions this time, though. No Extended Editions today.
Won: Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup
Nominated: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Ian McKellen), Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Song

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
This sequel outdid its predecessor, largely thanks to Gollum and the ginormous Battle of Helm's Deep. But it's hard to choose the best out of this trilogy for me, as I see them as one huge 9-hour (or 11-hour if you're watching the extended versions) movie. But I do have a preference for the second and third films, due to not only the epic battles, but the climax of the story as well.
Won: Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing
Nominated: Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Sound

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Out of the three movies, I tend to favor this one the most. This is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, and a perfect end to one of the greatest trilogies ever. It always gets the complaint that there were too many endings, but I was never bothered by that. With a principle cast of around 10 (give or take) characters, there needs to be closure to every story arc. I was happy to watch this again.
Won: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Makeup, Best Visual Effects
Nominated: It deservedly swept the Oscars, winning all of the above awards

I definitely plan on taking down the LOTR trilogy during this challenge. And I try and do a marathon once a year as well. I know last year I did the extended editions, but for this challenge the theatrical cuts will suffice. ;)

Good work Cae!

Right now I'm at 46. I was hoping to do 50, but that isn't going to happen. Unless I squeeze in some Disney/Pixar Animated Shorts, which I didn't even think about until now. I plan on watching one, possibly two more (full length) movies today/tonight, we shall see.

Sounds interesting. Would probably take me a long time to watch them. I'm sure we could put something together, as long as we have enough people that would be interested. Guys?

I guess our next "Official" Challenge will be this October, for the 2nd Annual SSG Halloween Horror Movie Challenge! Can't wait!!! :D

I've got an idea for the next challenge, Uke: Summer Blockbusters. Watching only big summer blockbusters like Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc. over the summer. What do you think?

El Chuxter

How do you determine them, though? Do you have to look up the original release date? If so, how do you figure the cutoffs? The "summer blockbuster" season has gotten longer recently, too.

General_Grievous

Any movie released between the first week of May and the last week of August qualifies, I'd say. I'd look up the release dates just to make sure.

Any movie released between the first week of May and the last week of August qualifies, I'd say. I'd look up the release dates just to make sure.

How about from Memorial Day to Labor Day?

Well, I always figured the Summer movie season started the first week of May (judging from stuff like Spider-Man, X2, and the upcoming Iron Man). But I think Labor Day is a good place to stop.

Alright, then we could probably be in agreement, May 1st through Labor Day releases? Do we want to start this right away...or wait a little while? I know personally I wouldn't mind putting it on the back burner til the NCAA's are over with :P

I love the idea. Something to hold us over during the summer, until the Horror Challenge. I do think we should put it off a while. I need a break personally.

Here is what I was thinking/came up with thus far:

We could start the challenge on Memorial Day, which is May the 26th and run til Labor Day which is September 1st., which would be a little over 3 months. This is the time-frame I came up with, a little long, I know, much longer than the usual length of a month. But I figured this way we can kind of spread out our movie watching... So let me know what you guys think, this too long? do we need to shorten the length by a month or two? What are your ideas? If it needs to be shortened, I would say shorten it towards the September side, give us more of a break in between this challenge and the Halloween (Oct.) one, if ya know what I mean.

I was also thinking we could do an April challenge (sorta based around April Fools) where we could watch nothing but comedies. What are your thoughts here? We would still do the Summer one as well.

Of course, if everyone is down with the April challenge, then we could shorten the Summer one to the months July and August, or still keep it May-August.

Just let me know what you guys thinks.

or we could do an April Comedy Challenge, and do our Summer one June-July, unless two months is too long. Just throwing out ideas, let me know what you guys think.

Also - I only did 46 for the Oscar challenge. I wanted to sneak some more movies in on Sunday but I couldn't. I ended up cleaning my room and watching all of the Oscars, so that pretty much ate up whatever time I had. Final at 46 isn't bad, next year I will shoot for 50+!

An April Comedy challenge sounds good to me, gives me the month of March to watch college hoops 24/7 and get some good ideas for the comedy challenge. Anyone up for doing prizes for these at all besides bragging rights? We could do a cash prize, a random SW figure or something else wacky...Just a thought. As for the other challenge, I think 2 months would be good for the summer blockbusters challenge.

Prizes... that could be interesting. I know at DVDTalk when they implemented prizes people "watched" over 300 movies in the span of a month, obviously lying about their totals (to me anyways), but I don't think we would have that problem here. I wouldn't do a cash prize though, maybe a figure or something else wacky like you mentioned DQ.

We could always do the April challenge for fun, and do the prize for the summer blockbuster one, or we could do prizes for both, or none. What do you guys think? I'm assuming everyone is down with an April Comedy challenge, and a Summer Blockbuster challenge? Please chime in so we know who is interested.

For the Summer challenge, these are the dates I came up with. What do you guys think/prefer? June-July, July-August, or June-August. First two options being 2 months, the last being 3 months (which may be too long). Thoughts? recommendations? suggestions? Chime in bastids!

I'm definitely down for the Summer Blockbuster challenge, and I think the June-August timeframe would suffice. Gives us more time to watch them. I also think that big budget summer movies that flopped (i.e. "The Island", should one choose to watch it) should count too, even though it's not a blockbuster.

I'm down with June-August as well.....I'm looking forward to the April Challenge too....

UKWildcat

Ok. So it will be official then:

April - Comedy Challenge

June-August; beginning of June through the end of August - Summer Blockbuster Challenge.

These time frames are actually really good. We have a month to "rest" between the Comedy Challenge and the Summer Challenge, and a month to "rest" between the Summer Challenge and the October Horror Challenge.

So what were the rules pertaining to which movies count as a Summer Blockbuster?

I was also thinking that we can extend our Holiday movie challenge to include Thanksgiving; maybe a week before Thanksgiving and run it through New Years; just start it a little earlier in other words. Sound good to you guys?

DarthQuack

Yea, we should be clear of what will count for the summer challenge.

Yeah, I'm cool with all of that.

So what were the rules pertaining to which movies count as a Summer Blockbuster?

I'm thinking any summer movie released from "Jaws" (1975) onward would count, due to the fact that "Jaws" is considered the first summer blockbuster. So by June, we'll have about 33 years worth of movies to choose from, including ones that will be in theaters then (like "The Dark Knight"). As I said before, they don't need to be big-budget blockbusters, they could be big-budget flops (like "Waterworld") or low-budget hits (like "Napoleon Dynamite" or "Superbad"). However, I do suggest we stay away from low-budget summer movies that didn't make much money at all. I can't think of any right now, but you know what I'm talking about. But there are so many movies to watch under that banner. As far as summer movies go, all of the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men and Jurassic Park movies are eligible, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. So there will be plenty to watch.

UKWildcat

Ok. That sounds good GG. And movies released between which time frame? I think we should do between month - month. Not certain day - certain day; this could be a pain to look up for past movies. I think you guys mentioned between May 1st and Labor Day earlier, so should we just go with like the beginning of May through the end of August or first week in Sept?

DarthQuack

For limiting what movies would count for the blockbusters, should we say if they made more than 100 million in the box office? An easy scan of Wikipedia or IMDB would help us with this.

UKWildcat
03-07-2008, 08:45 PM
That sounds good DQ, $100 million. I actually found a really good site that has a bunch of information pertaining to Box Office gross totals.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/

(Use search feature, top left)

Example: Terminator 2 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=terminator2.htm)

The Domestic Total Gross (which I am assuming we will go by) is the first number, at the top, in big print, so it is easy to find. Below that is also when the movie was released, which will help out a lot too. Thought this site was pretty cool, and could be very useful during the Summer Blockbuster Challenge. Scope it out!

As far as the "flop" idea, we could maybe put a limit of some sort on that so we don't go against the $100 mil. idea. Maybe limit like one or two flops a week, or we could do one flop per every 5 watched, or something like that. More thoughts?
