Even more news! Bill Belachick is a sore loser, Brady and Moss are still crying and have dropped out of the Pro Bowl, oh and the '72 Dolphins are loving it.

I hate the Patriots, too.

And suddenly Giants fans are everywhere! You're not even kidding. I think I've seen at least 5-6 people wearing Giants shirts.

Surprisingly I haven't seen a single one of the those million Patriots shirts being worn that I saw people wearing only a few short days ago. Strange...

I'm not jumping on the Giants bandwagon. I'm just happy they beat the much hated Pats. I also think it's funny that Brady and Moss pulled out of the Pro Bowl. Way to man up guys.

*News flash* Mercury Morris still has a reason to live.

Why ESPN gave him ten minutes in the SB post game show is a mystery to me. Really, he isn't the most well-spoken guy, and it was the Giants' night, not the night for Morris to collectively douse the Pats with a celebratory bucket of hatorade.

I hope somebody goes 19-0 next year, just to shut him up.

My early prediction for the Superbowl: Chargers/Cowboys

CaptainSolo1138

I hope somebody goes 19-0 next year, just to shut him up.That's mainly the reason I wanted the Pats to win the Superbowl. I've never been a Pats fan (quite the opposite, really, since I take a shine to the Bills) but I wanted to see someone do it just to see if my theory that on the day after it happens the remnants of that Dolphins team will all go the way of that dude at the end of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".

Cleveland?
Arizona?
New Orleans?
Detroit?
Houston?
Jacksonville?

And which to have never won one have the best shot:
all the above, plus
Atlanta?
San Diego?
Buffalo (hee hee)?
Minnesota (hee hee, doncha know)?
Seattle?
Cincinnati?
Tennessee?
Carolina?
Philadelphia?

I could care less, really, but it was still a surprise. After the season he had, I figured there was no question that he'd be back.

Hopefully by doing it so early, the NFL media's collective massive erection for Favre will deflate by the time the season starts. Hopefully.

Let the Aaron Rodgers era begin!

Brett Favre is going out on top of his game. He kept coming back to prove he still had it and he did. 1 play away from the SB. Aaron Roers is no joke. HEplayed well againsta tough Dallas team. 18/26 201 yds, 1 td 104 QB rating. Cant sleep on the back up.

Ahem. I believe the big news regarding NFL QBs was Pittsburgh signing Ben Roesthetistlisthsiletshtereberger for a nice 8-year deal. Big news is that the Steelers spent money on a player; lots of money.

Bel-Cam Jos

BAd news is the player they spent it on is very overrated.Who else can they get? Brian St. Pierre? Charlie Batch? Ain't really anybody out there worth it, and Ben runs the Pittsburgh offense well.

Kidhuman
03-05-2008, 07:38 PM
The running game is what wins for Pittsburgh, not the QB. Ben does handle it well, but he isnt worth 12 million a year for a QB.

Qui-Long Gone
03-07-2008, 01:06 PM
True but Ben has two intangibles that the Steelers wouldn't find somewhere else.

1. He sells jerseys = $$$$$$$$

2. He's a vetran and young and there aren't many 'proven' QBs available.

In the NFL two things matter: what have you done for me lately and what will you do this year. While Big Ben is no Tom Brady/John Elway, he has just enough potential to make him worth a long-term investment and just enough popularity to make him worth keeping.

In markets like Pittsburg tradition goes a long way....

So, anybody jazzed up for this year's draft? Will Jerry Jones pull a Mike Ditka and trade his whole draft for McFadden? Who will make the lamest pun about the last two picks being Two Long (too long?) selections? Got a bet on who'll be the Lowsman?

Qui-Long Gone
04-25-2008, 01:52 PM
This will be a good draft.

Best case senario: Jones pulls the Ditka and McFadden becomes the Lowsman or Ryan Leaf! That would make my day.

Best pick of the draft will be Howie Long's Son Chris...that kid will have immediate impact on whatever team he plays for.....

Good to see the highest paid offensive lineman this year is a rookie who's never seen a snap in the NFL yet....that should go over well for the Dolphins who have made a skill out of wasting their drafts!

I'm still miffed that the Pats get a first round from their trade....did anyone really believe that punishment of losing one of two first round pics was going to hurt them?

CaptainSolo1138

Steelers needed a bruising RB to help out Parker... got him in Illinois RB Mendenhal [sp?] Needed a tall WR to help out Ward... got him in Texas WR Sweed [sp?] Needed to know how to spell the names of Pittsburgh's newest draft picks... got to do that first.

We got to see the game on TV, loved the 2 big bombs from Favre and the generally solid play from him the rest of the game (save for the fumble...but at least it wasn't a dumb play of his,

I was glad to see McNabb do well, have him in my big ffb league. Also have DeSean Jackson who continues to impress. I hope McNabb can keep this caliber of gameplay up, and Jackson should have earned a starting spot when R. Brown and eventually K. Curtis returns.

That Panthers / Chargers game was insane. Awesome finish. Where the hell was L.T?

It was great to see football start back up.....

As a die hard Colts fan I have to tip my hat to the Bears getting their revenge. The Bears played like the Colts and the Colts played like the Bears!

Nice to see Donavan dominate again. Screw you Phily, you crap-hole town....you don't deserve to have professional sports in your city because your fans suck. Your lucky the 'Nab is still in your fraking town making you relevant.

Although I hate the Patriots, Brady is a good quarterback/leader and it's too bad to see him lost for the season. No doubt the Patriots will figure out a way to cheat themselves some more wins. The Bills and Jets may have the best window they'll ever have under the Brady Patriots.....so no excuses to steal that division (heck, even the Dolphins are showing better life).

In the NFC watch out for the Bears, Cardinals (hey it's the NFC West), and Giants. These teams could be the Giants of 07.

Indy and San Diego will be back, but their windows are getting smaller and smaller, and now with the Patriots in serious trouble, I'm not sold that these two teams will be the lock to steal the mantel, especially loosing games to weaker NFC teams. The Steelers may be the AFC team to topple this season.

I still think Jacksonville, the Titans, the Browns, the Vikings, the Saints, and the Bucs are overrated. The Saints may find their stride, but not without a defense. The Vikings still need a QB worth a crap.

Even if the Falcons and Ravens tank this year, you probably won't find a more upbeat locker room this week than those two! Good for them, and good for the NFL.

*I'd hate to be Vegas this year....someone is going to get a major PAYLOAD with underdogs this season!

What team has the best odds of going undefeated this season? My pick is the Cowboys or Steelers.

Well I had an amazing NFL day yesterday.
First, my wife got SUITE tickets from her work, for FREE!!! Those were $195 face value tickets! The food in the suite was free, so was the soda and BEER. I'm not a beer drinker, but I had one yesterday!

Got some free stuff too. Large fridge magnet and the gameday program. Yes free too!

Then to boot, it just so happened our suite was right next to the mayor of Pittsburgh's suite, so I got a pic of me next to him and chatted with him for a bit.

Then the BESTEST most absolutely FANTASTICAL thing that could ever happen to a Steeler fan (if you can't actually become a player)...

Not only did I get to meet one of the Steeler management people, but he had on the Super Bowl ring from a couple of years ago. I got to see it up close and personal....and even better..... I GOT TO WEAR IT!!!! He slipped it off his finger and allowed me to take a few shots with it on my finger. Gawd, that was frickin' sweet! Heavy ring, and large and gawdy, but dang, I'd NEVER pass that chance up.

My wife has the pics in the camera. I'll be making a CD of them to bring to work tomorrow. If I don't post them tonight, them I will tomorrow.

Wow, not only was the game awesome, but all that other stuff!

What made it even better was that parking for us was only $5, shuttle to and from a total of $4. So together we only spent $9 TOTAL for two Suite tickets!

(Course, I did end up buying 3 Steeler McFarlane figures, new Commemerative Myron Cope Terrible towel, and an awesome old fashioned Black and Gold Leather Helmet<---this thing is SWEET) All that merch cost me $97, but it was well worth it. Figuring that the tix would have cost us $390, I'd say we did VERY well.

Not sure on the VY situation, but statistics say it's probably clinical depression. Usually has an onset in the early 20s, no apparent reason, etc. Everyone forgets how young he really, and maybe how dangerously over looked this issue could be in the league. Could be cleared up right away with medication, talk therapy (there's a hunderds of sports pyschologists out there), and if the Titants/league, as a business, were interested in getting return on their investment, they'd help/point him in that direction. I don't think it's a Vick issue.

With expectations lowered, all the Patriots now have to do is make the playoffs and Cheater with the sex tape no one wants to see except for a few whack jobs in Boston will be geniuses/continuing their dynasty.

By Vick situation, I'm taking it to mean, funding criminal enterprises, having funny water bottles, blowing off endorsement meetings, etc. This seems more like a mental break down than anything. Which he may not have been prepared for or just happens because the brain is still a mystery.

Thanks for the link. I found it to be a great read.

I look at the VY situation as more of an Ankiel - ian mental breakdown than a Vick. If you'll recall, he did score very, very low on the Wonderlic. Much has been made of his poor fundamentals and mechanics and it could be that they're made even worse by the sort of mental framework that he has. If it is clinical depression, it is very much treatable and so hopefully the Titans will help point him in the right direction.

At any rate, you hate to see this happen to any player and so here's hoping that he's able to bounce back.

I am not sure if you are being facetious when you say that, J&H.:) And I am not sure who actually would be better. The age issue goes without saying, but I like Orton's style more than Favre's. Favre is like a more successful Rex Grossman; plus Madden kept making the comparison in 2006.

Favre is overrated when you size him up to other noteworthy QBs. Steve Young, Joe Montana, John Elway, Troy Aikman, Jim McMahon(who taught Favre everything he knows), Peyton Manning, Tom Brady (even though I can't stand him), etc. Favre is at the bottom of the list.

Brady, Manning and Favre all have the same record of beating all the other teams except Manning and Brady have done it in half the time.

I sum Favre's career up to 1,000 Monkeys typing on 1,000 typewriters that will eventually complete the works of Shakespeare. Favre has only had the success he has had in GB because of FAN POWER. If he had been on any other team, he would have been gone a long time ago. His longevity on the team, due to fan power, has allowed him to complete the tasks to get the honors he has received. Only a few I would give totally on his own merit; such as winning said championships like the Super Bowl(which he didn't even get the MVP for :D:rolleyes:). Most consecutive starts all these years and 2 NFC Championships and 1 Super Bowl, gimme a break!lol
Favre is a good quarterback, but not a great one.

It may be as potent, but his jean genes don't stack up to the ruggedly handsome yogurt Brady slings. Tom Brady has the only "smart" jizz in the world. If it doesn't approve of its intended target it will automatically divert itself to the nearest supermodel. Ergo, every load blown by St. Thomas of Brady has the potential to become a hot chick who can throw a fifty yard bomb with accuracy.

Thank God my Colts survived the thrashing the Vikings could have put on them had that team the means to score more than 15 points when it mattered most! Thankfully the Vikings will never matter until they get a QB as good as their runningback...any of their runningbacks! Imgaine what Culpepper and Moss could have done with Peterson in the backfield and Allen at DE? Scarry! Good luck scoring 15 points with Gus Minnesota!

*I called out the Bears after they humbled the Colts, and they didn't fail to fail. The Panthers may not be the team to beat this year, but they are the team to beat in the 4th quarter!

Ed is a good ref. Why is every blaming him for San Diego's inability to play football? Where was the Charger's D on 3rd and goal? Did they also forget to play the 4th down conversion? The only thing the Chargers are good at is excuses. Even the Falcon's don't complain as much as the Chargers do, and that team would have as good a reason as any. Without a doubt, they are to excuses what the Pats are to cheating....the kings!

Unless Buffalo can figure out how to play four quarters of football against the Pats, you might as well give that time the division again. If one of those pathetic teams can't dethrone them without Tom Brady, they deserve to be the laughing stock of the NFL!

I hope Vince finds peace....maybe the Titans should also send him some wide receivers too.

But I'd say Pittsburgh will have a tough time as well: home (Cowboys, Browns) away (Patriots, Ravens, Titans).Won vs. Dallas, New England, and Baltimore; lost to Tennessee. Just hope no one gets hurt/fined/traded/night-club-shot to end the year in the Dog Pound. That was a flat loss to the Titans today, but it could be the best loss they've had all year, especially if they meet there again for the AFC representation in SB XLIII (it's #43 this time, right?). : payback: Don't go grinding a Terrible Towel into the ground, Mr. LD White.

So, division winners are:
NFC West: Arizona
AFC West: winner between DEN and SD next weekend
NFC North: could be Minnesota or Chicago
AFC North: Pittsburgh
NFC East: NY Giants
AFC East: could be Miami. Or New England. Or NY Jets.
NFC South: could be Atlanta or Carolina (pending tonight's game)
NFC Wild Cards: either Carolina or Atlanta, and maybe Dallas or Philadelphia
AFC Wild Cards: Indianapolis, and maybe one of the AFC East teams or Baltimore

My guesses? NFC North'll be Minn, AFC West as San Diego (with a pitiful 8-8 record), NFC South to Carolina, AFC East will go to the Jets, and the wild cards will be Atlanta and Dallas (NFC) and Indy and New England (AFC).

pbarnard

Yes, they would bet on the Lions. This is a franchise where if they lose, they'd get the number one draft pick (and chose another wide receiver), yet they win the game and end up with a third through fifth pick. They could go down in history. But they'll find a way to blow it and become just another 1 victory only team and not hold a record for futility.

Also, anyone watch the OT where Fox over reacted to the Rod Miranelli's press conference and the on going joke he has with Rod Parker about he wished his daughter married a better defensive coordinator? It's going on two seasons. Of course, this is the same group of people who still think Matt Millen wasn't part of the problem either.

Not much. Only if ownership seems to be battling itself. That is why the Mara family ended up with the Giants (the owners group way back when was fighting). It could work with the Raiders. Al Davis is head of a group of people where no one has more than a 30% stake according to reports. Problem is the economy. Very few have the funds to buy out the rest/team at "fair value".

The Lions took a step in the right direction earlier this season by firing GM Matt Millen.
It won't/hasn't helped this year, but its a start.
What they really need to do is scrap most of the team and personnel and treat the next few years like the Lions are an expansion team (even though expansion teams win a couple of games).
Over the last 15+ years the Lions owner (William Clay Ford) had no motivation to improve the team because, despite being terrible, they still sold out every single game, Lions merchandise was selling well, and they had many potential future superstars (even though they all ended up busts). Ford laughed all the way to the bank.
This year, most of the games that were televised were all away games. There just a few home games that weren't blacked-out.

Cards 24 (Kurt Warner throws 6 touchdowns but all of them are reviewed and the NFL only grants him the three plus a field goal).

Steelers 21 (Big Ben gets knocked down a lot but manages to make major plays including two very controversial calls, one of which favors the Steelers on a fourth down and one that bits them in the butt to seal the Cards win).

I'm torn between a 2X-0 for the Steelers or a 19-16 game where they move it between the 20s but kick field goals in which case I take Cardinals covering the spread. Either way, I want to go side bet. Larry Fitzgerald will have 11 catches for over 147 yards.

No, no. You're all wrong. Jeff Reed is the first K to be selected MVP (2 FGs, both over 50 yards, 4 special teams tackles, 1 rush for 7 yards and a first down, 1/1 passing for 6 yards and a first down) in the Steelers' 8-7 Super Bowl XLIII victory. There. I said it. Just wait until it comes true, and you can just give me the prize from the New Contest! thread. :pleased:

...For TV (and the casual fan). Course, they already had a whole bunch of scores in the lows teens and single digits that had never happened before in the history of the NFL. So could be.

Going to live NFL games is so expensive (for only 3 hours entertainment not counting any tailgate party).

But your comment "for TV" made me think of that. I only watch 2 sports: NFL and MLB - but viewing live games at the stadium is a so much more fulfilling experience - any day with MLB.

Many times it's better to watch NFL on TV rather than in the stadium (depending upon where you're able to buy seats).

This year seems to be for the birds. Four of the five teams with bird mascots made the playoffs, and three of them made the conference finals. So, we were guaranteed a bird team in the final. With Philadelphia and Arizona both in the NFC championship, a Pittsburgh win in the AFC championship guaranteed that they would be facing one of the teams they merged with back in the 40's. Card-Pitt was one of the worst teams of all time.

I'm rooting for the Cardinals since they've never won it before, or even been there before. Their last championship was over 60 years ago when they were still in Chicago.

Mad Powers, I was thinking the same thing too.....except for Seattle, the bird teams faired well this postseason......

This season was not a great one for horses....the Cowboys and Broncs tanked before the playoffs and the Colt's late season dominance once again amounted to nothing.....

Pirates and Indians also tanked....Chiefs, Bucs, Raiders, and Redskins.....

And felines were REALLY BAD too...Jags, Cin, and the Lions were three of the worst....only Carolina represented the cats well (except in the division playoffs)....

Yes, a bad year for the kitties.

I think the Chargers can be thrown in with the horses. I know they used to have a secondary logo that had a horse on it.

Sort of, but it's for the teens in our church so it will be more "Superbowl" and less "party."

Having two small kids puts a damper on your ability to party, and I only care for a Superbowl party if it's heavy on the chips, dips, and wings.

Since we're the "married" couple, we tend to host the single people, mostly Chinese grad students, for holidays and what not. We've acquired quite the bit of alcohol between Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Chinese New Year. Our plans are to drink it all and have nachos/tacos and wings. Since we all live within 4 blocks of each other, no need to drive.

Some tacos and wings sound delicious! We got Monday off (since I work nights and come in on Sunday I got Sunday off and have to work Monday) so that just shows that the Super Bowl is a national holiday.

Anyone having any big Superbowl parties?Nothing BIG, but it'll be mainly Pittsburgh fans. Only an hour and a half of pre-game time, though. I'm bringing the dark-brown-and-yellow-only M&Ms, dipping the strawberries in dark chocolate (so no Cardinals red shows) with blackberries and pineapple as the main fruits in a platter, and bringing my Terrible Towel with various other paraphenalia (whisper, whisper). No, NO! Not THAT kind! Fan apparel, hats, pins, etc. That stuff!

Oh, and I hope the Steelers win. :pleased:

Argh, a bit fewer holding and roughing the passer, roughing the holder calls and we'd be looking at the Cardinals as Super Bowl champs. (as apocalyptic as that might sound).

That roughing the passer was BS, even Michaels and Madden stated so.

If Warner doesnt throw that INT. its the cards game. 14 point swing.

Great game. We actually have a pretty good run of having some competitive games. For quite a while, it had become kind of a running joke that Super Bowls were always blowouts, but there hasn't been one in 6 years when Tampa Bay beat Oakland.

Yea, I could care less about either team the rest of the year, but man, the Cardinals, I thought, got hosed. Pittsburgh only had 7 penalties for 56 yards and the Cards 11 for 106? Are you kidding me? How many times did I see Steeler players throwing punches too? That chump Harrison should have gotten ejected for that one shove/punch he did. And can Hines Ward be any more annoying smiling after every play? He threw a punch as well if I remember correctly.

Mad Slanted Powers

I only had a problem with that one roughing the passer call on the Cardinals. It might have made a difference. I don't think they got hosed as much as the Seahawks did three years ago.

I liked one half of the pirate boat crew. Mike Holmgren was great as an analyst. His explanations on how Arizona was using their running backs to neutralize Woodly and Harrison was particuarlly well nuanced. I could do without Matt Millen. He was constantly talking over Tony Dungy, and Dungy's too nice a man to say "Shut up, A$$hole, I've won more games in 2 years than you did in 10 or whatever you screwed up in Detriot." That being said, because Dungy is so soft spoken, he's not good for TV. If Holmgren doesn't want to coach anymore, he should get a TV gig really fast.

The running game is what wins for Pittsburgh, not the QB. Ben does handle it well, but he isnt worth 12 million a year for a QB.

Well, I guess that issue is settled.....

I keep trying to look at the stats, but the last time I can ever find Pittsburgh in the top 10, much less top 5 overall rushing teams was the early Jerome Bettis years.

I will say it was the running game that one Cower's Superbowl, not Big Ben, but no question it was Ben and not the running attack that won last night.

I'm no Steeler fan (go Colts....no, seriously, go get a better defense and running game), but Ben is like Bradshaw....THEY WIN SUPERBOWLS.

Having said that, I thought Kurt Warner played like a champ last night and it would have been sweet if he had won after torching the Steelers with Fitz.

I won't be naive and say that all the refs calls were carp (I agree that the roughing the passer "push" was weak, but so were some of the holdings on Pitt), because there are missed calls in every game. I thought the review of the 1st quarter TD was a bogus one, just as I thought they should've at least mentioned they'd already checked with replay on that last fumble/incompletion.

Still, the first to six SBs is sweet. I wanted the trademarked line to be Six-cess or One For the Thumb of the Six-Fingered Man (inconceivable for that last one? :D ). Steelers dominate winning the 0 and 3 year Super Bowls (X, XIII, XL, XLIII).

Here's to the Pirates pulling a Cardinals and losing in the World Series this year. :Pirate:
