View Full Version : Most Wanted New Figure Poll - Phase 1, Part 3 - The Empire Strikes Back

Mad Slanted Powers
02-10-2008, 03:51 PM
Our series of polls now continues with Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. This is the third of six polls. If you haven't voted in the ANH (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=37107) or TPM (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=37176) polls yet, there is still time left to vote in those. The ANH poll will end in two weeks, and the TPM poll will end in three weeks.

This poll will probably be a bit different than any of the others. It was a lot harder to find unmade figures, and many of them are just different Rebels or Imperials in the same outfit. I've included most of the ones that had actual lines. There are also some Bespin denizens that were only in cut scenes or CCG cards, but I've included them to provide more options for voting. There are also a few resculpts of core characters included as many of them could really use an update.

Of course you can choose to write-in characters not on the list below.

Once again, thanks to Tycho and pegger for providing most of the list below, as well as some suggestions by JediTricks. I used the Wookieepedia page for The Empire Strikes Back (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_V:_The_Empire_Strikes_Back) to provide the links.

So, please vote for up to 25 figures from The Empire Strikes Back and rank them in order of preference. This poll will run for four weeks and will end Sunday, March 9.

Rather than voting for Needa and Lennox individual Imperial Captain, can I just vote for a generic one with different head sculpts? Also, can I vote for a genric Hoth Rebel Communications Tech (like Wyron Serper and Romas Navander). I don't even care if they do a head variation for them.

We may end up doing something like that once we are all done. It could be that the combined support for some of those Hoth Rebels could make that a most wanted figure, especially since it is a vintage figure that hasn't been done with those colors.

My God, you're kidding, right?

Sadly, I see that you are not.

I would buy such a figure only if he came with a CommTech chip. Of course, the CommTech chip would have to say, "I'm an architect," as well as "Serenity now!" and "The jerk store just called; they're running out of you."

Please tell me that the character's roommate in the Imperial Academy wasn't named Kos'mo C'ra'y-M'e'r'. Or that he entered the Academy using the alias of K'hor-fey'la.

Best of the movies by a long shot, but tough to get excited about most of the figure possibilities we've not already seen.

1. Probot resculpt
2. Utriss M'Toc
3. Edian
4. Torynn Farr
5. Treva Horme
6. Wiorkettle
7. Wilrow Hood
8. Recovery Room Leia
9. Recovery Room Luke
10. Merril
11. Captain Piett
12. R5-M2
13. Hoth Leia
14. Sheckil
15. E-3PO
16. Wes Janson
17. Hobbie (w/o helmet)

I can't imagine why anyone would want a Bespin Han resculpt. The POTJ one may be from 2000, but it beats any other Han figure in the seven years since by a wide margin. Including (or should I say "especially") the "Vintage" ones.

Honestly, what else is there to chose from? Most of the pilots have been made, only one named actual noteable impireal is left from this movie...and a comm reader impireal would be something different. And the Seinfeld refrence would make him a little more marketable from fans of that show as well.

I wasn't saying you had to be kidding me for picking him. I meant you had to be kidding that they named him Vandolay.

Oh my bad. It is a weird name but like i said earlier the cross culture appeal could be something for both sets of fans, that and he looked different than other officers we have gotten.

bigbarada

I honestly don't think the guy would have ANY appeal to Seinfeld fans, because he really has nothing to do with the Seinfeld show. The name is just an annoying coincidence and another example of the laziness of EU writers. Now, if there had been a gag about this guy on an episode of Seinfeld, then that would be a different story. Otherwise, there is no real reason for Seinfeld fans (who aren't already Star Wars fans) to care.

This has reminded me..... I'm surprised no-one's asked for new SA Zuckuss and Dengar to complete the updated Bounty Hunters line-up. (Or maybe they have..... I couldn't be bothered to go back through all the posts!)

No votes for them yet. Both are pretty good figures for the limited time they have, though Zuckuss is the only one of the bunch not yet updated.

How can you tell that's a newly-sculpted Probe Droid? Looks the same in that little pic as the original, except with better paint. Steve's uploading the TF pics right now, so I guess we'll see in greater detail in the next hour or so.

And it makes it highly unlikely that they would ever revisit it again if this isn't resculpted. They'll just keep pointing at this version and say, "we did that".

So does this mean that the head is going to randomly pop off at the most inopportune moments and topple whatever display you have set up?

My POTF2 version did that ALL THE TIME and I just got so sick of it, I shoved it in a box and never displayed it again.:upset:

You twisted girl! :lipsrsealed:

Please don't edit your post. MSP will know what you actually meant. But this is so funny the way you have this phrased!

And don't forget Wedge's head on Torryn Far's body!

I guess Rogue Squadron got a little drunk one night and after Wes and Derek decided to join with the medical droids to turn themselves into Cyborgs they decided their C.O. was due for a sex-change operation.

I had no idea that by the time of ROTJ, Wedge was a she-male!

Here, HERE!! I will not consider it a new Hoth Leia until she comes from a COMPLETELY new SA mold, nothing less! Same goes for Bespin Leia!!

Well, vote for what YOU want to see.

I'm a new-sculpt, never-before-made-usually-obscure-character-interested-kind-of-guy. (Go Ice Cream Maker Guy! Treva Horme, Wiorkettle, etc.)

The line will continue to have the 25-30 staple characters in order to continue to sell (i.e. Darth Vader every year).

But some here who want endless resculpts with the barely minimal improvements (or drawbacks) that Hasbro makes to the characters can vote for that in this polling process, too.

As to what Hasbro actually makes? Well they'll take these lists under advisement, I figure. They've been really good at listening to the fans over the years actually (Wuher yesterday to Yarna for tomorrow).

But I know they will try to save costs by taking an Imperial officer body and continue switching the heads from Piett, to Jerjerrod, to Motti, to Needa, to Lennox etc.

Ozzel was shorter in statue but they could use his body to do a good EU Palleon who was also shorter (as well as Luke as Lt. Jundland, which they did).

I have no problem with that and never really studied my Imperial rank insignia, so I'm not sure what they're supposed to look like (the chest bars and rank cyllinders).

This poll is just for figures, so I've eliminated these. You can add four more figures if you want to bring yourself back up to 25. Actually 5 more since you only voted for 24.

Still two weeks to go in this poll. We've had 36 voters in the poll so far. That's only two less than what we ended up with in the ANH poll. Still plenty of time to vote if you haven't already.

Gothiczartan

3. As you know, JediDefender is proud to support the "Please Give us a Willrow Hood Figure" campaign. During the conventions last Summer, it was sounding like he might finally make his way into our collections in 2009. How about an update for our ICMG fans? Have you guys decided on "single card" or "multi-pack" yet?

** We can confirm that Willrow will be a basic-carded figure in 2009 in an EpV-themed wave (no updates on who his wave-mates are. You'll have to wait!). As of yet, no design work has been started on Willrow, but we'll see if there's an opportunity to share with everyone the progress of this fan-favorite figure as work starts to begin.

guess we can cross him off the list

Droid (everyone) - just a suggestion: for those who want Wilrow Hood, don't remove him from your lists until you see it in plastic. Hasbro could still change their plans. Let's reinforce our demand for him.

Droid, in your case, you don't have 25 figures that you want from ESB, so it won't really effect your other votes since you don't have to sacrafice any characters.

I disagree, that's a waste of a vote, I would be very displeased to turn in a list with Willrow Hood on it at this point, by that argument they could stop selling Star Wars figures tomorrow and every figure we know is coming will falter. They said they'd do it, it's not the type of thing they BS about.

I don't have a problem with having a figure on the list that is in the works. It is a list of most wanted figures. When you give them the list, just say, "These were the results of a figure poll we had." You can highlight the ones that have been announced. I would suggest giving them complete results, so it won't matter if Willrow is displacing anyone for the final slot. Just because something tops our list doesn't mean Hasbro will make it. They often come up with stuff we didn't even consider. So, they will have a list that will show us what we want the most, but stuff on the bottom of the list might give them ideas as well.

Tycho
02-29-2008, 02:46 AM
I agree with MSP.

Bane Malar is a perfect example of what he's talking about. Hasbro did their research on him and Sgt. Doallyn who's been on our list since 2005 and we're scrambling to catch up (with whomever Chewie threw against the wall I guess - or whichever Hasbro thought made a more interesting figure).

JediTricks
02-29-2008, 02:56 AM
I think it's a particular mistake to include a figure they've announced is going to happen anyway, you've pulled plenty of entries off that have been confirmed by Toy Fair information, it's just that you've SEEN those instead of just been told they're happening, but there's no actual difference in the reality end, the figure is being designed as we speak, they wouldn't announce it otherwise. Like I said to Tycho, by the logic of "well, something could go wrong before it gets to us", Hasbro could implode and not release 1 more figure after the TFU wave. Hasbro already knows how many people want Willrow Hood, that's WHY they're doing it - hence my claim that it's a waste of a vote, it's a repetition of current information that's already been enacted upon.

I'm also not down with including a list of everybody, not only is that hundreds of figures, but the losers' results are only going to make it more likely that Hasbro NOT make them which I feel is not what the list should be about.

I don't really care whether Willrow Hood is on the list for this round, since we are supposedly doing another round which combines the films. Not only would I have not voted for Willrow in the final round even if Hasbro hadn't announced we were getting him, I certainly won't vote for him in the final round now that we know we are.

I can't imagine people voting for him in the next round when they know they are getting him any more than I can imagine Yarna getting too many votes. I don't think this poll results should tell Hasbro, "We really want the figures you are making", to which they will respond, "Thank you. We are glad you are pleased."

I only deferred to Tycho in this round because I don't really care about any Empire figures except Luke and Leia medical frigate, Needa, a Black Bespin guard, and Torynn Farr.

I will say that if we are giving Hasbro the Top Ten or Twenty-Five or whatever of each film along with our final results then I think we should leave Willrow off. It isn't helpful to give Hasbro market research for a figure they claim they are making next year.

I do think we should be very reluctant to give Hasbro all of our polling data, unless they want to come look at it here.

For A New Hope, for example, only 15 figures got more than 15 votes. I am not sure that Hasbro will say, "Awesome, if we make this figure we will sell at least 15!"

This poll is a lot of fun, but isn't generating overwhelming interest.

I think our final list should go to Hasbro that says, "Our site voted and had the Top Ten characters from each film, and the Top Twenty-Five overall." We shouldn't necessarily brag that the most votes any one figure got was 28.

One thing that is encouraging. Last year's JediDefender poll had Uncle Owen, the Tonnikas (as one slot), Bom Vimdin, Wioslea, Dr. Evazan, Red Leader, Han Stormtrooper, Saurin, WED 15-16662, and a Black Tunic Officer resculpt as its Top Ten A New Hope figures.

We had eight of these figures in our Top Ten. They did not have Brainiac or Dice Ibegon in their Top Ten and we didnt have Red Leader, Han Stormtrooper, or the Black Tunic Officer in our Top Ten. This shows that the fan community seems to agree on a New Hope priorities, unless, of course, our members were voting in JediDefender's poll and vice versa.

True, Hasbro has people they hire for market research and they're more interested in predicting groups trends and not fulfilling the wishlists of a few dozen fans. When I took Sociology, we were taught that anytime you are dealing with numbers of less than 100 people, then you are not talking about groups, you are talking about individuals.

If only 28 people voted on one figure, then you could easily go to another site and find 28 people who don't want that figure. That's most likely how Hasbro sees it.

It doesn't matter if a figure wins overwhelming support on this site, because unless it gets a similar amount of support on Rebelscum and JediDefender and whatever other collecting sites there are out there, then you can't expect these professionaly trained market researchers at Hasbro to really take that "data" seriously.

We just simply can't produce the numbers necessary to sway Hasbro one way or the other.

Which is why I think we should only tell them who the characters were who got the most votes and that we should not tell them how many votes each character got. We should just say, "Our site voted and these were the top requested figures."

Tycho

Which is why I think we should only tell them who the characters were who got the most votes and that we should not tell them how many votes each character got. We should just say, "Our site voted and these were the top requested figures."

That's exactly what we did the last time when we handed the winners' list to Hasbro at C3.

Incidentally, the same characters that have never been made before are winning again. There is consensus and consistency.

While I agree with what BigBarada posted concerning sociological data - I had the same coursework - a comparison of 28 people voting from about 4 fan sites yielding close to the same data (Bom Vimdim, Wioslea, etc) would give you more than a sample size of 100 when put together. There's some value in the votes coming from independent efforts and not the same fans as well.

It's not just ANH, by the way. Though that is our only poll that is closed now. (TPM closes Sunday). We're getting very consistent results and I think other websites that do this will too. There are only so many possibilities left in the first place.

Next, for any that don't understand MSP's Phase II, he's going to take the Top 5 from each movie list and the EU, thus 7 lists, or 35 figures.

He's going to ask you to vote for your most-wanted 5 or so from them. If ANH gets all the votes, the next 5 ANH figures will go up in round 2, etc. Thus it is fair if the PT and the EU competes. We'll get a good measure of how many and which ones folks here want. It might be none. They might rank, but far down on the list. I think MSP is going to determine the Top 50 this way - from whatever of the 7 sources they may come from.

Since only the Top 25 from each list competes (we might not get 25 deep on any single list anyway - probably won't) it doesn't make sense to take it beyond a Top 50 to me. There will be 175 figures eligible for Phase II in the first place. Is it valuable to learn what 75 should NOT be made? The movie lists from the 25's will suffice to tell Hasbro which ones they should look at if they want figures from specific sources, such as for an ESB wave.

With the Top 50 that I arrived at in 2005, three years have passed and only half of them have been made:

Hem Dazon
General Veers
Herme Odle
Lando Smuggler
CZ-4
Yarna dal Gargan
Moff Jerjerrod
R5-D4
General Tagge
Han Bespin Torture
Colonel Yularen
M'iiyoom Onith
Jango Fett out of armor
Luke Endor Gear
Elis Helrot
AOTC Anakin Evolutions (not single-carded though)
Major Derlin
Clone Trooper Training Gear
Chief Chirpa
Rep Been
Biggs Darklighter Academy Uniform
Pamde Black Leather Temptation

Gragga and Sora Bulq were close runners-up that also got produced.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Doallyn and Keolkeech are sort of approximated by Bane Malar and Leektar, and the Wokling accessory is included with Leektar, but not packed with his or her Mommy.

So I don't think that if we deliver a list at Comic Con 2008 that we'll see more than 25 of our winners produced before 2012 - though we might as Hasbro gets desperate. But they may move their concentration to the TV cartoon and the live-action show by then, severely limiting what we get from movie and OLD EU figures. So we have to go for it.

Mad Slanted Powers
02-29-2008, 08:59 PM
I can agree with you all on not giving complete results. We can give them the top 25 from each movie and our top 50 EU. No need to tell them that one figure got one 25th place vote. What I'm thinking of in terms of announced figures is that we could just list extras to take their place. If they announce sometime between now and Comic-Con that Bom Vimdin is being made, that doesn't change the fact that he was 5th in our poll. If the announcement occurs before Phase 2 starts, then we can omit him from that voting. Likewise, I can agree with leaving Willrow out of Phase 2 voting if his position comes up for voting. Of course, people are free to change their votes until this poll is over. Enough people do that and the point will be moot. However, even after R5-M2 and Wes Janson were announced, we still had people voting for them.

In terms of statistics, there are only so many characters available from each movie. True, there aren't a large numbers of people voting here, but when you multiply 38x25, you have 950 votes. Those votes are going to coalesce around a group of figures. So, Tycho is right. I've took a glance at the polls RS has going on now, and they are voting for the same figures. I'm not sure how similar their results will be to ours, but I am guessing it will be not be too different. If Hasbro gets polls like this from several sites, they'll see which figures have the most interest.

So what I envision is our combined list, which we will do our best to keep announced figures off. Then we will have the individual movie polls where we could list announced figures with an asterisks next to them. It would be like the All-Star Games where people get voted in but don't play due to injury. In this case, these are figures that were nominated to Phase 2 but didn't compete due to being announced already.

If we keep to the schedule I originally planned, then our combined list will have 75 on it by the time Comic-Con comes around.

I think Round 2 should work just like Round 1.

Have the Top 25 from each film be the ONLY figures you can vote for in Round 2. So you get 150 choices. Then you can only vote for 25 figures.

I really think we should just generate a list of 25 figures. Then give Hasbro the Top 25 overall list. I also think it would be good to give them a list of the Top 10 from each of the films. That way if only five figures from Attack of the Clones made the list, or 2 from Phantom Menace or something, they would still know who we want from each film, since they will continue making figures from each film. I don't think we should give them a list of the Top 25 from each film though because, for example, the 25th most wanted figure from A New Hope didn't really generate significant interest in that poll.

I don't think we should generate a Top 50 list overall though. I only got to vote for 25 figures from A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. I place much more emphasis on those two films. If you generate a list of the Top 50 it gives more priority to films that might not have received as many votes. If we were going to have a Top 50 overall we should have been allowed to vote for 50 from each film, etc. We were only allowed to vote for 25 per film so the overall list should only have 25 slots. Maybe you'll have an Attack of the Clones figure at 26 on the overall list when it wouldn't have made the list at all if you were allowed to vote for 26 figures from A New Hope.

I don't think there should be a million rounds as part of Round 2. Just let people vote for which finalists from each of the six films should be on an overall list.

Tycho
02-29-2008, 10:09 PM
If MSP does a Top 50, with 5 choices per movie per round, there'd be only 10 rounds in Phase 2.

It's considerably shorter than the plan I had.

I think that the case Droid is making might result in all the votes going to ANH and ROTJ with no chance for the other films or EU to compete. That's what we're trying to avoid - if only to make it fair. This way, the Top 50 CAN end up being entirely ANH and ROTJ, but those movies will have to fight for their share of the votes.

But I think there are PT and EU haters who will want to corrupt the process to favor their preference for the OT.

MSP has a good and fair system worked out. We've been at it in the New Giant Scene-By-Scene Poll Thread for quite a while, debating all the concerns with the process.

Plus, I think this way will be more fun, and might make it easier to attract more voters. The previous round was difficult to come up with which 25 I wanted and in which order. It still might be difficult to pick 5 from 35 (I know this is true because I've been trying to figure out how I would vote based on what the current standings are), but I think most people will have a good idea of which ones they want the most, and it will be easier to put just 5 in order. Also, this guarantees that only figures that finished in the top 5 in their poll can finish in the top 5 overall.

If MSP does a Top 50, with 5 choices per movie per round, there'd be only 10 rounds in Phase 2.

It's considerably shorter than the plan I had.

I can see how an extended method could be more fun, but I don't agree with Tycho's points. 10 rounds seems like a lot and could be hard to keep people interested or even to make sure people understand the process.

The EU shouldn't have a chance to compete. You have done an extremely long poll to generate a list. Let it stand on its own. I don't think Hasbro is filling EU spots with film figures or vice versa.

If people vote overwhelming they want more figures from A New Hope or Jedi, let that be the message to Hasbro. There is no reason to try to guarantee the other films slots, particularly if we give them the Top Ten lists from each film. "Hey Hasbro, if you are going to make Phantom Menace figures, make these."

I don't know if it corrupts a process for people to vote their preferences for OT figures over EU or PT figures. Perhaps it just doesn't bring about the results you hope for.

That's what the votes would PROVE then. It's completely fair.

There is no reason to try to guarantee the other films slots, particularly if we give them the Top Ten lists from each film.

The other films are not guaranteed slots on the list, just chances to compete.

"Hey Hasbro, if you are going to make Phantom Menace figures, make these."

We're doing that.

I don't know if it corrupts a process for people to vote their preferences for OT figures over EU or PT figures. Perhaps it just doesn't bring about the results you hope for.

That wasn't what I was saying. I was noting it would corrupt the process if the EU was NOT allowed to compete. Ulic Qel Droma with a lightsaber seems more exciting than Leia from the Medical Frigate, just standing there, with no accessories. As it turns out, I'd actually vote for Leia in that case, because I think it's more important to complete movie scenes. However, I'd buy 15 or more generic Yuuzhan Vong Warriors to troop build with, so that'd be a high priority for me. If the EU selections are not what others want, they won't rank. It's totally fair.

What would corrupt the process, is for someone to say the Vong Warrior cannot compete. That's one faction's opinion (the OT-only lovers). Well, they are not the only customers. Let's make this truly democratic.

BTW, if Hasbro wants to do an EU WAVE, they still have the EU list we generated. Also, those winners would see some percentage of them delegated to comic 2-packs and not necessarily affect the basic line. The 'Vong Warrior would be best single-carded though, so people can army build. By contrast, Leia from the end of ESB will sell about the same as Padme Black Leather Temptation. I bought 1 of that figure and would buy 1 Leia (or 1 Yarna dal Gargon while we're on the subject of one-scene-wonders). I think 15 purchases of the Vong Warrior, or a small handful of Jaina and Jacen Solo figures bought merits some consideration for the health of the line.

Remember, "collectors" aren't the only customers either. Diorama builders are their own niche just like OT-Purists are. Then there are combinations of those, too.

All I'm saying is let there be truly democratic voting results - and there will be. MSP already posted the rules for this polling when he started each list-thread.

I think that we need to give them at least a top 50 overall rather than just 25. Tycho gave them a top 50 list, and about half of them have been made, so giving them a top 25 would pretty much just be giving them the same list with a few changes.

I was looking through Tycho's poll thread and it was longer and even more convoluted than what we are doing now, and it doesn't seem as if there were as many people that were sticking with it through the whole process. We've had 38 in the ANH Poll, 39 so far in the ESB poll, and we will have at least 30 in the other polls. I believe Tycho said that the previous list made an impression, combined with the fact that Kidhuman's list was quite similar. I was also reading comments at the end of Tycho's poll saying how much they enjoyed the process. I think that just submitting one big list and waiting for the results isn't quite as exciting.

The process I have in mind for Phase 2 should manage to hold people's interest, because there are a lot of good figures that people want that will still be trying to make the final list after the first few rounds. People will want to keep voting to try and get their favorites on the list. Each round will only last a week so that we keep things moving along. It will also be interesting to see how figures from different movies fair against each other and the EU.

OK, I'll say it: Hasbro has gotten so much better at this. The quality of sculpts and the amount of articulation means that they're justified in revisiting a lot of previously made figures, but I'll contain myself as best as possible. Nuthin' but love for their recent work.

3. Dengar SA-resculpt

And everything else gets bumped down two spots.

The best snowspeeder Luke we've got is from the Battle of Hoth Ultimate Battle Pack http://www.rebelscum.com/tacUBPhoth.asp It's a Target exclusive, so I doubt we'll ever get it over here, but I picked up a couple of the figures loose from ebay. The figure itself uses a repainted Zev Senesca body.

Okay, this poll is complete. I have two sets of results for this poll. The first is the standard list. However, I have an alternate list with the following adjustments:

Tigran Jamiro, Tamizander Rey, Cal Alder and Shawn Valdez were changed to Vintage Hoth Rebel, since they all have the same outfit. If someone voted for more than one of those, I only counted the top vote, eliminated the others and moved everything else up to fill the slots.

Likewise, I counted votes for Trey Callum and Jeroen Webb as votes for Hoth Rebel Soldier SA, since they are in outfits similar to the modern Hoth Rebels that many would like to see resculpted.

Since none of the individual characters placed higher than 32nd, they aren't being affected, but the combined support for a Rebel in the vintage style outfit will be shown in the alternate results. It also raises the standing a bit for the Hoth Rebel Soldier SA.

I've saved this file at http://idisk.mac.com/madslantedpowers-Public. The file was created in an Open Office program for the Mac called NeoOffice. I saved it as an Excel file, so I don't know if the formatting will be preserved.

There were 43 voters in the poll. Here are the original results:
