Filled up for $2.099 per gallon for a total of $26.45 (the lowest it's been for me in a LONG time!) at Arco.

Not as cheap as some of you guys posting sub $2.00 prices, but it's been coming down steadily this whole time.

I paid $2.22/gal. yesterday. Pretty darn good for California standards. Across the street, Arco's watered-down excuse for fuel was at $2.13.

I was happy to see a drop of more than twenty-five cents since I last posted! :pleased:

This is all a conspiracy:

- maybe OPEC just wanted to f- us and prove how badly they could control our economy so they can make future demands

- maybe oil is not even that scarce, but the US wants to keep exploiting other countries' resources and saving our own - but when we're pushed - we'll open our reserves and collapse the ill-intended efforts of OPEC

- maybe a new world order is trying to reform our habits so that we drive less often and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The recent fuel price hikes were to teach us a lesson

So will gas prices keep going lower? If they do, will people drive MORE? I don't see myself doing that though. But very often I am too tired nowadays.

Will gas prices shoot back up for any of the conspiracy goals I typed out above?

Don't believe anything! Keep alert! Be mindful of the Living Force.

Tycho is dead on. With everything in the stores being bought and sold while gas prices were still high, and the comodities for food soaring, deflation is creeping in. We all earn the same, everything we need and owe increases. OPEC has just dis-incentivized the non-oil economies banding together to make alternatives to the internal combustion engine.

JediTricks
12-12-2008, 10:41 PM
OPEC is eating it too, they're trying to slow down the slide too (for selfish reasons, of course). Speculators are doing this based on their belief (or lack thereof) in the market's strength based on the US economy being able to BUY more gas. If there was ever an argument for "the invisible hand of the market", this would seem to be it.

The run down there, the driving around while I was there (which was considerable since Bobafrett's hotel was a 15-mile backtrack from Tycho's house, and Tycho's nurse got lost on the way so I had to follow), and the run back to LA all only used up 2/3rds of a tank. Even though my car is 16 years old and only specs at 28 mpg hwy, and I might have been speeding much of the way, that trip registered a sweet 29.1 mpg!

I saw a drop today, actually from this morning, from $1.95 to $1.85. Still not even close to where we should be with oil prices so low.

This is an interesting chart app. Comparing Average US gas price vs. oil price and commonly oil price is a good clip ahead of gas price. In the last month or 2 oil price as actually dropped below the gas line while the average price of gas is increasing.

http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx

All the reasons that the big oil companies used to drive gas prices this summer seem to have fallen flat on their faces. Now with the prices in recession their same logic should continue driving the price of gas down.

It was very interesting seeing gas prices on my CA, AZ, NM, TX, OK, MO road trip.

Left CA paying $3.03/gal. (at home) on Sept. 7. Prices steadily declined as I traveled east. The best price was $2.32/gal. just south of Springfield, MO. The worst was at Needles, CA (no surprise there) at $3.67. When I returned home to CA this past Monday (9/15), I was greeted with $3.13/gal. for regular unleaded.

It just shows to go ya how much tax is on each gallon of CA fuel (plus the greed factor).

HINT: When traveling on I-40, avoid fueling at Needles, CA at all costs! The jerks at the gas station even said my year-old tires needed replacing! Yeah, right!

El Chuxter
09-17-2009, 03:25 PM
I once had a flat right at the Needles exit and was forced to pay the insane prices at the one gas station for a replacement. The guy tried to convince me that a Toyota Tercel had a very odd size tire, which is why it was so expensive, since he didn't stock them, but luckily he had four in stock. No way was I getting four; I wouldn't have gotten one except it was the only place for something like 70 miles. Cost me something ridiculous like $100 for one cheap-arse low quality tire that should've been $25. Place was worse than K-Mart.

I've noticed in CA lately that Costco is routinely a full $0.20 cheaper than anywhere else, which leads me to believe gouging is in play again. I expect five cents or so less there, but $0.20 is a bit much. It's actually worthwhile to drive there even if we're not in the area.

I'm not reveling about how low or high gas prices are. Or even how bad the economy is. Mr. Chuck Lorre says it best as to why.

I believe that Newton's first law of motion is the reason we will emerge from our current economic woes. That law states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. How does that relate to the financial #$%*storm we're now cowering under? Allow me to explain. There are slightly less than seven billion people on this planet. Assuming that roughly half that number are either too young, too old, too lazy, or too loaded to work, that still leaves almost three and a half billion people getting up in the morning to chase the almighty dollar, the transcendent rupee, the zen yen,the dear ol' euro, the what's goin' on yuan, the... well, you get the idea. Now, call me crazy (and many have called me far worse), but I happen to think that three and a half billion motivated people is one big damn object in motion. And the only thing acting against that object is the friction caused by a small bunch of greedy, dumbass, screw-the-pooch, Ivy League pot stickers (the unbalanced force). I therefore assert that the unbalanced force (you know who you are, shame on you), will eventually be overwhelmed by the object in motion (three and a half billion people with pluck, aka pluckers), thus allowing the object in motion to continue its relentless journey forward, thriving and conniving until it is once again slowed down by other unbalanced forces, or a very large meteorite. Or a plague. Or fundamentalists with nukes. Or atmosphere-eating nanobots. Or a super volcano. Or Skynet. Or Cylons.

There ain't no stinkin' "two's" in San Diego!Yes, there are. Just not for your gas-guzzling "premium" SUV, which is so stupid that Chrysler did that - all the other Chrysler brand vehicles using that same engine run on regular, but they "tuned" the one in your Cherokee to only run on premium so you'd have to drop an extra $5 on fillups.

And as for $2s at premium, there are none near you, the closest cheapest is $3.09 (unless you have a costco membership, theirs is $3.03), there are a few, the Ultramar on Adams is the only non-Arco station though. According to my GPS, anyway.

And yet, we still pay less than any other country in the world. Gasoline is still a great value here in the U.S., really.

Crude oil went up again today, it's up around the $82/barrel range. Much of the increase has to do with seemingly erratic government reports on oil reserves, and I'm sure not a little of it is due to saber-rattling on the Arabian Peninsula.

We also use more than them. You don't ask why your local mom & pop store charges $8 for a 12-pack of TP while WM charges $2.50 for it, you know they buy in massive bulk and get a significantly lower unit cost for doing so. Of course, it helps too that a 3rd of it comes from our next door neighbors, and the US refines much of the fuel we're talking about, which further lowers the costs. So it's not all the same, it's majorly relative - we shouldn't just chalk it up to our lucky stars, there are economic reasons for why we pay what we pay and other countries pay what they pay. We are acclimated to where our levels are at, our economy flows on that and chokes when it goes up.

Anyway, gas went up around here to $2.95.

We also use more than them. You don't ask why your local mom & pop store charges $8 for a 12-pack of TP while WM charges $2.50 for it, you know they buy in massive bulk and get a significantly lower unit cost for doing so.

I have heard that gas stations really don't make that much off fuel sales -- it's mostly on grocery and impulse buys that the bulk of their profits are made, which also accounts for the higher prices on those items.

Regular was $3.09 tonight. I have to use Premium which was $3.29.

The cheapest I saw today was $2.37. Other stations were a couple pennies more, but nothing over $2.40.

Around the Death Valley area this past weekend, highest I saw was $3.92, but highest paid was $3.29. Back home here, lowest I've seen (have yet to stop by Costco, however) is $2.87.

I'm in Michigan for a bit and gas jumped from $2.38 to $2.57 in one day and they're talking about it rising another $.30 in the next two weeks. I love how they can predict this crap.

I paid about 2.89 yesterday.

Ji'dai

Prices jumped 20-25 cents since Wednesday's sighting of 2.37. I expect the rise is due to the fact it's the weekend and the possiblity of more snow/ice is expected.

Not easy to find Jack's under-three-bucks menu for gas 'round here. But I topped off the tank at $2.99 the other day. Most stations are around $3.13 or so.

$2.99 is the Arco price around here. It went down, then way up, then down, and is back to $2.99. :p

Gas is up .16 here in less than a week. Crude is up over $86 a barrel today on the COMEX... things are starting to get interesting again.lol

Around here, gas has held steady since the last time I posted, consistently $2.99 at that Arco for a month at least, and most of the other stations are roughly the same way, albeit a few cents more.

I took my sister out to Malibu last weekend, gas was $3.60 a gallon on average. That's worse than the Beverly Hills station on Wilshire, the only one worse I know is the insaneo station on Fairfax and Olympic.

El Chuxter

It ranges anywhere from $2.97 (Costco) to $3.43 (Mobil) around here. I have never figured out how that particular Mobil gets any business, but there are always people there.

JediTricks

I used to think it folks desperate for gas at that moment, and that probably is part of it, but having watched folks voluntarily buy from the most expensive station in town here on occasion, I think they're just people who don't care or don't pay attention.

I know a couple people that NEVER check prices on anything, just get what they need when needed. Must be nice...

I cannot find sub-$3.00 gas anywhere anymore. :( Although, I haven't gone by Costco lately.

I didn't think the second was lousy; it just suffered from someone thinking a much bigger budget could offset not having a funny script. But it did have some moments in spite of itself.

But it did have some moments in spite of itself. Then you think wrong, it's lousy. :p It's a lot of bad ideas, too much money, not enough vision or ideas, and it's got crappy music to boot.

Now, wait a second. You cannot disagree that any movie score by Steve Vai is, by default, awesome.

I will agree that, despite the first having unknowns (Extreme having not hit it big, and I think the still-haven't-really-made-it Zappa brothers are in one of the bands), the quality overall of the songs is much higher than on the second, which had heavy hitters like Megadeth, Faith No More, and Kiss. (In fact, I think those three had the only good songs on the soundtrack aside from Vai's score.)

JediTricks
04-09-2010, 05:31 PM
Steve Vai did 1 song, he didn't score the film. And it's not much of song, at that, just really a meandering riff with a bass line and drums attached:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMSRdhFomTk
that got turned into the dopey Grim Reaper rap (the album version is a snore, I think it's in the credits):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sPJYWTeENI&feature=related

The music in the film is largely weak and the better artists' music is used sparingly and generally worthlessly throughout the film.

El Chuxter
04-09-2010, 05:35 PM
Other tracks from the score have appeared on some of Vai's albums, even if they're not on the proper soundtrack. There's not a lot of score, about five or six tracks, IIRC.

JediTricks
04-10-2010, 03:43 AM
Vai didn't perform the score, just a few other brief licks besides the Reaper track that I know of, most notably the intro to the unbelievably poor choice of "God Gave Rock & Roll To You" at the end.

$3.03 yesterday at ARCO, the Atlantic Richfield Company, part of BP, your friends at British Petroleum who want to remind you that it wasn't their fault they just ruined the Gulf of Mexico.

I actually let my tank run under the quarter-tank mark to avoid buying at Arco.

We're at $2.79 here in Michigan, but we've dropped like .20 per gallon in the past few weeks.

JT- your remarks about ARCO make me smile. I've got a BP 3 blocks from my house, but I will not give them any of my money. My anger has lessened a bit since they made the statements that they were owning up to the problem, but long term, I'm sure MANY taxpayer dollars will be used to clean up the mess.

Right on. I gassed up again for 10 cents over ARCO prices (although with their 45 cent debit card fee on the 11 gallons I buy, it's only 6 cents per gallon different). My mom is really annoyed by the idea that there's nothing we can do to punish them for this: if the federal government fines them, they'll only pass the costs onto their customers, thus not feeling the pinch. And my sister as an angler (a fisher-woman) is devastated by the disaster and its affects on that ecology - fauna and the flora that sustain them - so there's definitely a lot of reasons for me not to use ARCO or BP services over this for a while.

Anyway, I filled up at Shell again for $3.05 a gallon. ARCO was still $2.95 a gallon.

Went the non-Costco route for $2.95 at the local grocery store (Albertson's) with a gas station, as it was closer to home. Around here, the prices are all over the map (as low as $2.85 for el-cheapo stations, up to as high as $3.11 still at others).
