I got to read two pages of a book while waiting in line at Costco (what, is this a holiday weekend ot something?) for $2.93 gas.

I'm seeing a few non-Costco stations with sub-$3 gas around the area. A few; most are around $3.09 or less.

We're starting to see more stations below 3 bucks (by $.001 per gallon, of course), with the lowest non-Costco running $2.899 at ARCOs or occasionally $2.959 at others. There are a few holdout stations at $3.05, though.

Will top the tanks off at $3.08/gal. tomorrow. It will be interesting to see AZ, MN TX, OK, MO prices as we make our trek over the next few days. I'm sure it will be like last year when I made the same trip and will run into some astonishing prices this californio is not used to!

Saw $2.92 as I was returning home, so some fuel justed jumped into my tank somehow. Most stations now are at $2.99, with an occasional ARCO below $2.90.

Indianapolis jumped to $2.85 over the weekend after hovering in the $2.75-$2.55 range for the last couple of months. I was surprised that the news channels weren't reporting it like the sky was falling. They freak out here over that like you wouldn't believe. I tell them to go live in some of the states represented in this thread, and they will appreciate how we have it here. Seriously, a week and half ago, a price war broke out in a small town near where I work and I paid $2.43 a gallon.

Good ol' oil producing California gets charged about 62 cents federal excise tax on every gallon of gas. Then there's sales tax (which varies by city/county), city/county taxes (if applicable)...and on, and on. Taxes in Hawaii are even cheaper than here. Good ol' oil producing Alaska charges the least tax.

Does California do a "winter mix"? I had no idea what that was until I moved to Georgia, apparently its just gas less refined(supposedly making prices go down). Florida didn't, but when you only have winter 3 weeks out of the year I suppose its useless...

TeeEye7

JediTricks
02-27-2011, 04:16 PM
Even higher around here. Lowest I've found without the GPS is $3.67, most are $3.7X though which is a bummer. I'm exclusive at Shell though, they don't charge for card use, and now they have it so if you have a Ralphs Rewards card with more than 100 points, you can use those 100 points to knock 10 cents off per gallon. Since those points mean $1 per reward at Ralphs, this way I can save more than $1 when I buy more than 10 gallons, which I always do since I drive it to 1/4 and then fill up. The coolest part is that the Shell pumps actually have their numbers on each price above the selection button change to reflect the savings.

El Chuxter

Because there's a possibility that Libya, who doesn't supply our oil, might have a disruption of a day or two. When bad things happen, the price of oil goes up, and it affects the price at the pump long before the actual oil involved hits the market. Then the price goes up again when that oil hits the market.

But when the price of oil drops, we're told it doesn't affect pump price.

Personally, I'm sick of the BS.

I read somewhere the cause of our higher gas prices in Cali is that the oil we refine mostly comes from Alaska, which is heavier, which causes more refining needs. I don't buy it, I think it's just a scam to gouge a state with a lot of resources.

Well, you can't criticize this President without being branded as a racist by the media. The news organizations have turned from watchdogs into cheerleaders ever since our current President was elected and that's not a good thing for freedom in this country.

Anyways, we're up to $3.89 over here in central Illinois for unleaded, $3.99-$4.04 for premium.

I understand that it's going to take about 17 years to see any relief on oil prices if we start drilling for oil in America, but we need to start drilling right now so that the next generation isn't buying gas at $10-$15 per gallon.

I shop at Smiths (Kroger stores) for groceries and they accumulate points towards a gas discount. Some stores have a gas station right on the same lot. Normally 3.65 a gallon, I got 50 cents off a gallon. So I paid 3.15 a gallon to fill up my tank. Which really isn't that good considering last years prices, but it was a somewhat pleasant surprise nonetheless.

It still cost me 50 bucks to fill up my truck though.

What it really does is make me concerned that the same b-holes are saying there's a possibility of $6 gas sometime next year. Aside from the impact of what averages to a 20% annual increase, think about how that will affect inflation. No need for alternatives, right? We're all made of money.

It's not "all speculation." The dollar is dangerously weak right now vs. other currencies, nearing its historic lows of 2008. Takes more of 'em to buy anything when it's so weak.

I'd hardly call the oil industry a "free market" when only 4 or 5 gigantic multinational corporations are involved. They're also responsible for having certain quotas in place that kill any chance of competition, and hence, the possiblity of lower prices.

Not to mention that we're quite simply running out of the stuff. It's a finite world with finite resources, folks. Get used to it.

I read an article that said it's Wall Streets fault that gas prices are rising. They "overestimated" (lied) about underproduction on oil from the Libyan Crisis. So they are making money hand over fist due to the over inflation of oil prices. But once the market subsides..... Bailout!

BP estimated that we have about 40 years worth of crude oil left, but I wonder if that was before or after they dumped millions of barrels of it into the Gulf of Mexico?

However, the US is estimated to have the world's largest oil reserve (if you include shale oil); so why we're not drilling for oil here is beyond me. Actually I do know why: politics and environmentalist pseudo-science.

We are drilling for oil here, if by "here" you mean the continental US. I know a lot of people who work in that industry, mainly in the Gulf of Mexico.

Actually I do know why: politics and environmentalist pseudo-science.

I guess in some areas like California, yes, perhaps politics has something to do with it. Then again, maybe their constituents just don't want their ocean looking like the north-central Gulf of Mexico. Otherwise, most politicians (including Obama) are pro-Oil. Those who are not are very much a minority.

As for "environmentalist pseudo-science"... how does that keep us for drilling for more oil?

Way to argue semantics there.

Gouge (VT): 3. to subject to extortion or undue exaction, overcharge

Costco is expected to be a little cheaper. But if they can make a profit charging a full thirty cents (almost 15%) less than the other stations within a block, then that definitely qualifies as "overcharging." And, therefore, since "gouging" means "overcharging," then they're gouging.

Since I needed to check Costco for some items, I figured I'd try them for gas: $3.699, but that's the same (cash only) price as many of the ARCO stations here, so they're not as cheap as they once were. Side note: the signs for the ARCOs have a small "a BP Company" logo and phrase in the corner (why would they do that to themselves?).

Friday it was $3.67, yesterday I had to fill up, raised 2 cents, and not just at the 1 station, all over town.

I read that the lower gas prices had shown to be helping the economy immediately, so naturally that we're all satiated and not screaming for our damned subsidy money back from the gas companies the way we were a few weeks ago, they go and raise prices again. I don't care what political side of the spectrum you're on, that right there is just a sign that they are greedily artificially inflating the price of gas as a moneygrab, and even goofier, that their greed and shortsightedness end up hurting even the stupid greedy morons causing the problem. YOUR MONEY IS WORTH LESS THAT WAY, DUMMIES!

The fifty bucks pays for the gas we use going to and from home...it's to help defer that cost to the county. That's still cheaper than if I had to pay for gas and wear and tear on my own car. Sad thing is, you not only have supply and demand, but speculation and anticipated demand, plus the minor fact that all oil goes through one or more of the big corporations, and it would be impossible for someone to start a new oil company and compete with them to keep prices down. And they won't recover, even though the fire won't affect production too badly, and it'll turn out that Iran and Israel are both just posturing because that's what those two countries like to do. (Though Israel has proven they have the gumption to act on their posturing if they deem it necessary, so Iran's not being particularly smart here.)

Do not forget the increase of two trillion dollars in global liquidity over the past few months. The rising price of oil is not due so much to speculation, as it is to inflation.

I ease some of the pain by not filling my tank. I get gas more often, but once it hits about half a tank. It costs no less in dollars, but a tad less in stress, I guess. Mine is about a 14-gallon tank, meaning if I got close to empty, it'd be around $60 to fill 'er up.

But if the price is trending up, better to fill the tank at the cheaper price than to only get a half a tank at that price and pay more for another half later.

Today was the first day in LA where the prices didn't go up, according to the paper, so it's a gamble.

I always fill up so that I can track my MPG using the trip odometer, I reset it at every fillup, then when I fillup again I note the mileage on it against the amount of gas that went into the tank, divide and get my MPG. It's highlighted a trend of my in-town mileage dropping from 21 to around 17, yet my freeway mileage stays around 28-30, my shop doesn't know why yet, but it's at least good to know that something is going on and I need to address something.

Plus, I just don't like worrying about the tank as often, I've seen how much stress there can be nickel-and-diming the gas tank and if I can afford to avoid that, I will.

I went back and looked at the prices that I posted and between 4/7/2010 and today (3/10/2012) the average price has been $3.45, the high point was $4.099 on 5/4/2011 and the low was $2.819 on 5/3/2010.

In looking at my posts there are times where there are rather large gaps between my posts, it seems I didn't become a 'regular' in this thread until last fall.....

Jumped about $.04 more here in the last 2 days.

One ARCO I often buy from was $3.999 today, which was down four cents from the last time I drove by there. My last refueling was Sunday morning at Fred Meyer. I paid $3.839 after my 15 cent discount, to that would have made the price there $3.989.

Long line at Costco today for $4.22 gas. That's two towns over, of course (the closest good-sized city). Here, it's $4.45 at Arco.

The stations around here have been steady, either in their over-priceness (I'd estimate it averages around $4.35) or rising rates. But I found a grocery station at $4.19, though, today.

Stations around here dropped a few cents to $4.23. I filled up the other day, 11 gallons nearly $50, first time I've ever put that much wallet into my tank.

On my trip from here to Salinas and San Jose (and back)...

- the total trip time was around 40 hours, and I drove over 810 miles
- cheapest gas seen was $4.05 (in SJ)
- most outrageous seen was $5.04 (somewhere on US-101N, where I immediately got back on the road  )
- bought gas at $4.69 (highest price I've ever paid per gallon in my life :( ), $4.46, $4.39, and $4.23
- averaged about 31 MPG for the trip (not too bad)

At home, filled up at $4.19.

It seems $4.19 is the best deal around; today's was from Costco (realized I still had money on the cash card), and the line was only 5-pages-read long.

Small place had $4.09 today. I've seen a couple places at $3.99 (if you buy a carwash there too), but most stations are around the $4.19 level here.

Slow creep up, after a little drop-at-a-time period. I did see a non-car wash price of $3.99 at an ARCO one day, but the under-$4.10 prices that'd been appearing seem to be disappearing.

Why are you guys paying for your gas?! Over here we just pull up, have them scan our ID, and then pump away! Nothing better than leaving with 50 gallons of unpaid for fuel!

We pay because we don't have an M4 like you do.

What's up with "brand name" gas stations here? Up about $.20 over this week at Mobil, Shell, or Chevron (it's over $4.40 at all of those), despite news reports saying gas prices are dropping and per-barrel value of $12 or so less, lately. But I got it at a local station for $4.19, less than a mile away from some of those places, within the same city borders. Hmm. :greedy:

Today I drove down to Burlington and saw that ARCO was $3.999, while back up here in Bellingham it was $4.159 at one of the ARCO's here, It had just been $3.939 there on Tuesday when I filled up a gas can for my mower. I didn't see what the price was at Fred Meyer today, but I was there Monday and paid $3.769 with my 15 cent discount.

Tried a new station, which had it for $4.25, but since each pump has just one nozzle (which leads to long lines behind) and it seemed every driver had to pay at the central window, so I drove away. Settled for $4.29 at the one I often visit. So much for oil down to almost $90 a barrel and "prices dropping across the country"... except on the west coast.

$4.23 is the lowest around here. I drove into the 'hood last night and they had a station that was $4.19 cash, but I chose not to get shot to death instead, so the car is on fumes until I gas up for probably $4.27 in a few minutes.

Heh heh.

So I hit up Shell down the street yesterday, they had gone up to $4.31 a gal overnight, but since I was so empty it was time to whip out the Ralphs Club card and maximize my per-gallon discount. I didn't realize that once Ralphs had discontinued actual Ralphs Club rewards, they doubled the discount at Shell, so it's now 20 cents off per gallon, which was a LOT better for my wallet and I will be partaking next time I have dropped $100 at Ralphs in a month. That said, I still put the most into my tank I've ever paid, $49.43, exactly 12 gallons.
