I just want to say thanks to all of the veterens out there and for all of those that are currently serving. Thanks Slick and SK and anybody else that I might be forgetting.

Indeed. Thank you for your service, and to all who have gone before you.

Ditto for me as well.

Let's add ChrisC to the list! He's in good company with Slick  and the home-at-last SK99  !

Although, let's not send memorial wishes to current enlisted just yet. Thanks are never really enough, yet we cannot forget even that simple gesture. My family's got a long military service history.

I told my students to remember why they're getting a longer weekend, and I've been wearing my flag, red-white-blue gear, plus my VFW "Buddy Poppy," too.

I'd definitely love to give a big thanks. Compared to what they're doing in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the rest of the areas around the world I've got a cake walk over here. It's got it's stresses but if I get injured it's most likely because I'm a dumbarse and not because someone is out to get me.

I had my day off and spent it getting ready for summer deployment.

How did I miss this???

I'm definitely with you on this!!!

Once again, honors and remembrances to those who've served and passed.

Yes yes, remember the reason for the day.

Remembering Uncle Bill this day:

...as well as the others who gave so much in the name of Freedom.

The whole weekend gives us more days to say thanks! :) :salute:

Thanks to those who gave their all so that we may live in freedom.

Ba-bump! But it's more than just one day; it should be every day. :salute: Thank you all!

Just could not believe the wide-spread confusion (helped mightily by a befuddled media) between Memorial Day and Veterans' Day. Sheesh! Let's get it right, folks!

I heard a few reporters and anchors who realized their mistake(s) when they were thanking current "veterans" as Memorial Day people.

If I'm right...
- Memorial Day (last Monday in May; those who've died in action)
- Veterans' Day (Nov. 11; those who've served in military; formerly Armistice Day for WWI treaty)
- Armed Forces Day (May 18th [?]; those who are/have been in military)
- Independence Day (Jul. 4; when we repelled those :alien:s... or started a new country)
- Patriot Day (Sep. 11; commemorating 9/11 events)
- Patriots Day (third Mon. in April; commemorating Lexington/Concord battles)
- Flag Day (Jun. 14; for Old Glory)

And Memorial Day originated after the Civil War, and was formerly known as Decoration Day.

I also just found out that Presidents' Day is still officially called Washington's Birthday, at least as a federal holiday.

Happy belated Memorial Day, also Happy Flag Day!

And despite the cloudless sky and hot temps, it was a wonderful ceremony. The pictures below don't do it justice.

This Friday will be the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
They had some articles in the local paper today about people with local connection who were involved with the operation.

And would have been my grandmother's 99th birthday.

Learned quite a bit on various television D-Day retrospectives. I always wonder if I had been 16-25 years old in the 1940s what I would have been able/willing to do. Glad for what those people who WERE there did.

My local newspaper had a suprisingly large amount devoted to the 70th anniversary, there were several stories about local's involvement in the invasion.

Like BCJ I wonder about what would happen if that were to happen today.
