Did anyone watch this? I'm curious to know what others thought about it.
I thought it was okay, but pale in comparison. The writers and producers really played up the conspiracy/paranoia/living in a post-9/11 world aspects. I won't go into more detail until others chime in, in case no one watched it yet.
Unlike the '71 original, the '08 version lacked tension. The docs had a tight deadline when it came to finding a cure and stuff. It wasn't anything like that in the '08 version. They had time to run on the treadmill!!

I was interested in watching this.
Given your review, I'll pass. I was hopeful it would be as good or better than the original.
Thanks, OC! I'll find a better way to spend my time!

I thought it had a bunch of really good ideas that were poorly executed. The casting was terrible and I really couldn't find myself caring less about what happened to the people in this film.

My thoughts exactly, this was a disaster from start to finish.

The sad thing is, it had the potential to be something great, too.
I need to track the original down and watch it again.

I was in high school when the original came out, and it was a refreshing "thinking man's" sci-fi thriller. Not your usual teenagers vs. space monsters we had to endure as a norm. I really liked it as it was in the genre of 2001: A Space Odyssey which, IMO, had broken the mold of cheesy sci-fi of the 50's and 60's (the big exception there being The Day the Earth Stood Still). I think the original still holds up!

Well, 2001 is my all-time favourite film. I love the fact that you mentioned The Day the Earth Stood Still, which is also VERY high on my list as well. That one has a message that still rings true today.
Yes, this miniseries/telefilm was an utter mess. They had some really good updates that were relevant to today's culture but it was all handled so poorly. There was no build up or tension and the pacing was completely off. I wish someone more capable could've taken the reins of this project and turned out something incredible.

If you can't play nice, get out of the sandbox.
That message sure had a "wow" factor for me as a little kid. It was sure reflective of the times and really had an impression on me as I was a wee lad during the tail end of the "duck and cover" era.

I recently saw the un-edited version of "The Andromeda Strain" on cable.
The first time I'd ever seen it like that. It had nudity (boobies) in the town of victims and when the scientists were being cleaned or sterilized for their entry into the station.
I would like to buy this on DVD me thinks.
Anybody ever see "Phase Four" ? sort of like Andromeda Strain (probably where they got the idea) where they have a station set up to study the ants that have suddenly become intelligent, building monoliths, planning attacks, finally infiltrating the station, killing people, eating them from the inside out. Lots of close-ups of the ants doing cool things, which was ahead of it's time back then, but is now commonplace in nature programs.
I remember being scared as a kid when I saw it. If I saw it today it would probably be cheezy.
