View Full Version : What should I ask Hasbro at Comic-Con?

Assuming I get the chance to ask them some questions, what would those be? Unlike Q&A, the in-person answers are meatier so the questions should be as well. We have some good questions in the Q&A voting thread which haven't been asked yet:
http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=38317
but some aren't really that type of thing, so I wouldn't ask them all.

Also, if I get the chance, I will try to clarify or chat up a question, spin it into a conversation with follow-up questions and such, so any thoughts on what a tiered question like that could be?

I would need this before Wednesday, obviously, and try to take it easy on my fragile brain, it's busy working through Comic-Con run-up. :crazed:

Going through the current Q&A list, I'd like to ask question 9, the 12" figure question. I personally don't have any vested interest in these pieces as I have most of the series, but I think we'd get a more rounded answer.

Chat up the Sail Barge, of course.

And any of the questions by that devilishly handsome JabbaJohnL guy will work wonderfully.

Just start reciting "Do You Love Me Now?" by the Breeders and see how long it takes them to call security.Have you not been to Comic-Con before? They might walk away, but that's about it. I could stand there singing from 10am to 7pm until I'm completely hoarse and still they wouldn't have me escorted out.

. . . Yeah, I got a question.

Ask em what the best tool to use would be to cut out the R2 or R5 unit permanently attacked to the Y-wing so that I can modify the droid slot to work with new figures. Currently, I'm thinking maybe a fairly small hole saw and a well placed jigsaw. (I'll buy power tools and take up wood carving for internal parts if I have to to make this damn thing work, but by god I'm hell bent on doing it and posting a step by step guide to it here!)

EDIT: I'm fully willing to sacrifice my lone Y-wing for the better good of the comunity here, so any advice from the yahoos at hasbro would be appreciated! ^_^

Could you please ask them when they're going to make Jacen and Jaina Solo (and beg them on my behalf to do NJO Jedi Knight versions rather than LOTF versions!). I don't care if they're in a Battle Pack, Exclusive 2-Pack, main line EU wave, whatever, I just need those 2 NJO figures!

Thanks!

I tried to sing a Spin Doctors tune last year, and Joe Quesada personally kicked me in the groin.

I had taken months to track down all the band members in various alleys so it sounded authentic, too.

- Where is that blasted Titanium Outrider?!

- Considering the vast amounts of devotion that Hasbro has dedicated to the upcoming game The Force Unleashed, isn't it time to finally get around to devoting efforts towards the old, but everlasting wonderous treasure that is Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight? It's spectacular inclusion of live-action cutscenes, it's plethora of fascinating characters, and it's epicness that still has loyal followings scattered across the internet surely deserves your undivided attention into translating Kyle Katarn, his friends, his allies, and his gaggle of foes into figures? Not to mention, the success of the rerelease of the Dark Trooper, which theoretically should have been shunned due to the figure's obvious outdatedness with being subject to a Hulk-like build, and the lack of posing potential. This surely should have sent Moldy Crows circling around your minds.

...and the 1998 Kyle Katarn doesn't count, because it's all sorts of inaccurate.
...and the Moldy Crow so needs to be a Titanium.

- Is it possible that the little fighter that docks within the BMF is an ever-so subtle testing of the waters for the lost art that is mini-rigs?

- Seriously; a giant Millenium Falcon and AT-TE at the same time, but we can't get an accurate version of one of the smallest vehicles of the entire saga? I mean of course, the popular yet neglected speederbike. Skip a couple waves of Saga Legends to finance this much needed addition, true, people would notice the absence... but only because they'll be finding new figures. Totally win-win. Don't forget the clear support/"hover" poles.

- Ya know, a Last Crusade Titanium diorama/battlepack with the train would be really interesting... a few train cars, people on horseback, giraffe heads sticking out, what could be more fun?

That's all that comes to mind right now.

Get confirmation of the TX-130 tank: It's price and size, and if it will be an exclusive
Playsets, playsets, playsets!!!
Realistic style figures for new CW animated characters, such as Ahsoka, Cmdr Fox, Cmdr Rex? (We know what they've said, but ask if they'd like to see it happen as well, even if not yet planned for)
Sail barge of course
Turbo tank
Death Star playset in particular if no others? All-in-one or modular (but sold as one large item) or sold in set pieces?
Here are my poll results from a couple of months ago regarding new vehicles never before made in the modern line, please forward this info to them:

The final results:
1) Jabba's Sail Barge-more than a two to one margin leader over the next most voted on. It lead the votes in every phase (four phases in total).
2) Twin Pod Cloud Car
3) Gungan Bongo-close third to the cloud car by just one vote
4) Corporate Alliance Tank Droid
5) TIE Defender
----------------------
6) Dooku's Solar Sailor
7) Clone Turbo Tank (Juggernaut)
8) Blockade Runner/MTT 2-way tie
10) Virago

So there we have it. Possibly fueled by the AT-TE's being made the LARGE Sail Barge wins impressively. It took the top spot in every phase and clearly is the most wanted never before made vehicle by SSG forumites.
Next up the long asked for Cloud Car. It was a good vintage toy and would do well as a modern toy. Add a couple of pop out missles and this toy could fly off the shelves.
The Bongo is a little surprise to me that it made it this high, but it's of note that it's not just a prequel vehicle but from TPM argueably the least well received of all three of the prequel movies. This might work well in an ultra battle pack.
The Tank droid would be a very welcome addition and was possibly fueled by the Homing Spider droid being made.
Finally rounding out the top 5 the TIE Defender. Proving that EU ships do have some interest.

In a poll that started with 80 ships, these 5 stood out among them all.

Most importantly, thank them for the great job they've done so far this year, with special note to the new vehicles

That's all I can think of for the moment. I'm at work, so I'll have to pick my brain further, later today.

Please ask all of these. Regardless of Hasbro's past stance, we've seen over the last two years specifically, that they do hear we fans and have delivered. BMF, AT-TE and Yarna for three prime examples.

You know I'm jumping on the Sailbarge bandwagon. I think Hasbro needs to hear about that and playsets from all sites, countries, collecters, kids until they cave and decide to either prove us wrong or let us prove Hasbro is wrong about them selling. Even the Cantina, which has been stated to be a boring non-interactive set piece... besides all the cool aliens kids could set up all over, there were two action scenes with Han killing Greedo & Obi-Wan's lightsaber. Only issue would be how accurate Hasbro made the set... not going to sell to collectors if it looks like cr@p. But, they proved they could do it with the Falcon!

I appreciate you are blowing off steam on this, but just serious responses in here from now on please, it is VERY difficult for me to work through these Q&A threads and deal with the material that's there, much less the shenanigans as well. Right now, reading how this thread has continued, I am considering throwing in the towel on this whole thing, I have too much on my plate as it is.

I would really like to express gratitude for the figure choices this year and probably next. It seems like when they told us to be patient they meant it and it looks like it is paying off.

I don't see how they can say the skiff is adequate. I'd rather have a sturdy, properly scaled skiff then a sail barge. And if a new skiff won't sell the sail barge should never be made!

Are the Lars family from AOTC on the radar for the next few years? I think they are the last glaring hole in the line.

Thank them for the Indiana Jones line, bad paint jobs and all. It's great to finally get figures after all these years from the original movies. I still think it's one of the best action figure lines on the market today, perhaps second only to Star Wars. Here's hoping it'll continue for years to come.

See if you can weasel out some info on what they have planned for Indiana Jones in 2009. I really want some more beasts - the horse (repainted in brown, black, etc), camels, and elephants. I want the three elephants from Temple of Doom in 3-3/4" scale!

Based on the new poster:

*What's up with Dooku's holographic-but-painted saber?
*Since the BD figures are meant to be "all-new," why are they forcing us to get repacks of Yaddle and Even Piell if we want to build the droid? Will there be a GH army builder or something in that wave so we can get the part without getting the same Jedi?

Hopefully this does not sound overly childish, but how far is Hasbro willing to take the "shadow" subline? We've got a few shadow troops, a speeder, a titanium AT-AT. Would Hasbro extend this concept into repaints of existing vehicle molds, such as a full size shadow AT-AT, a shadow gunship, or more? Whether people want them or not, I'm curious about Hasbro's intentions.

Also, what is the timeline before Hasbro starts repainting/rereleasing some their new vehicles? How long before we get a Battle Damaged or muddy AT-TE? An in-need-of-repairs BMF packaged with Bespin Han and Hoth Leia? Are repaints of these vehicles to keep them in circulation for more than a year even in their plans?

Thanks for asking.

And make sure to take some rotten tomatoes, so if Hasbro says that they plan to rerelease all the vehicles as "shadow" variants, then you can start pelting them with the tomatoes.

Will there be a GH army builder or something in that wave so we can get the part without getting the same Jedi?THAT is an interesting question, I am definitely going to ask them how many of the redundant parts coming with the GH figures will be there, will some BD figures have strategically themed parts to ensure sales, and if so, will they be new or rehashed figures like this? (Keep in mind, we all knew going in how BAF worked when we asked for it, Hasbro's SW plan actually has more flexibility than any other I've seen to date from other BAFs, so I will make sure that's in the question too if I get the chance to ask it.)

As for the rest of the questions, I'm not ignoring them, it's just I saw this one right now and it set me off enough to make a post, I'm kinda reminding myself to be fired up over this one.

It's not really a question per se, but I like the Comic Packs because they give background and context to figures that otherwise would not have any for many fans. That's the way I think EU products should be, as opposed to "there's your figure, go look him up online." Especially with all this crap coming up like the Crucible Pajama Party Set and the insanely overpriced Rebel TIE Fighter.

So, anyway, maybe they could include comics -- or even excerpts from novels, when necessary -- with items other than the two-figure comic packs? This would give these items much-needed context.

- So do you have Cliegg, Owen and Beru (prequel versions) on your radar for figures within the next few years?

El Chuxter

Or just phrase it as, "Cliegg Lars could come with a gun, a removable leg, and a flying chair. This is so cool even Mr T would say, "Damn, that's one cool toy!" and buy a few thousand. Yet you refuse to make him. Are you guys on crack or PCP?

I have a Q&A in my PC right now that I have to transcribe. I tried to get a rounded assortment of questions in, we didn't have a lot of time this year but Hasbro gave up some of their free time to power through what we had for them, and I really appreciated that, I think you'll enjoy it.

Team SSG also spent some time talking with Team Hasbro Star Wars about a great assortment of things in the line beyond Q&A, I included a little here and there in the Panel write-up which I just posted, but there's so much more that didn't get posted (or couldn't be! :D), I know I'm a tad close to it, but I think Team SSG - SirSteve, Tycho, and myself - did a good job representing you guys to Hasbro. Hasbro was excited to do this Q&A with us, which is a great sign that we're opening doors there, and it was only scheduling conflicts that kept our Q&A conversation from getting bigger and bigger.

I didn't have enough time to fully flesh out everything, some questions were too specific to consider and some were just stuff I couldn't get to. I got 9 questions in, and we FLEW through this session, Derryl and I both talk and think kinda fast, so when typing it up I'd have to go back and slow it down a few times. But this is pretty much a word-for-word recount of what I'd say was more of an interview.

Just start reciting "Do You Love Me Now?" by the Breeders and see how long it takes them to call security.Outside room 7AB where a massive line was waiting, there was a guy in a Domo costume SCREAMING his head off over and over, for like 20 minutes. Everybody was super annoyed, the Con staff was there doing their normal jobs, but nobody did a damned thing about it. While witnessing this, all I could think - besides " OMG, WTF?!? STFU!!! " - was about that discussion we had here.

Thanks!I didn't discuss this with them, but I believe Tycho did when he presented them the poll. Tycho?

- Where is that blasted Titanium Outrider?!Asked and semi-answered, they'll get back to us with a more definitive answer soon.

...and the Moldy Crow so needs to be a Titanium.Didn't ask this, but please hit the Q&A poll with that stuff, I do want it answered.

- Is it possible that the little fighter that docks within the BMF is an ever-so subtle testing of the waters for the lost art that is mini-rigs?Didn't have to ask this, they had already explained to us that it's not, that it's merely a way to lend a ship too big to "whoosh" some whooshability factor, and since they mentioned escape pods in the film it felt like a good fit.

Don't forget the clear support/"hover" poles.Asked and answered, though the answer isn't as great as I'd hoped, it's merely down to a logistical problem.

Get confirmation of the TX-130 tank: It's price and size, and if it will be an exclusiveSince they all but confirmed it for us last round, I didn't bother to push it further. In hindsight, I should have nagged them but there's not really that much opportunity.

Playsets, playsets, playsets!!!Passed on this because it's been done, they know there's a desire, and they're starting to work on it with Ultimate Battle Packs as we just saw at the show. Even Sideshow when asked about it pointed to those pieces.

Realistic style figures for new CW animated characters, such as Ahsoka, Cmdr Fox, Cmdr Rex? (We know what they've said, but ask if they'd like to see it happen as well, even if not yet planned for)Asked and answered. I like their reasoning, but I forgot to ask if they'd like to go there.

Turbo tankI personally didn't push this, it's one where I always want to say no personally, so I force you guys to vote for it to force me to ask it. However, if you look at what they said for the Sail Barge, you can see how that'd lend itself to the Juggernaut as well.

Death Star playset in particular if no others? All-in-one or modular (but sold as one large item) or sold in set pieces?Someone in the booth asked them about some large, 4-piece Death Star playset coming soon and they stopped talking for a moment, wouldn't comment to the guy. I decided their silence would be too much work to break through in an official capacity if there is a "yes" there, and a "no" would be too consistent with prior statements.

Here are my poll results from a couple of months ago regarding new vehicles never before made in the modern line, please forward this info to them:

The final results:
1) Jabba's Sail Barge-more than a two to one margin leader over the next most voted on. It lead the votes in every phase (four phases in total).
2) Twin Pod Cloud Car
3) Gungan Bongo-close third to the cloud car by just one vote
4) Corporate Alliance Tank Droid
5) TIE Defender
----------------------
6) Dooku's Solar Sailor
7) Clone Turbo Tank (Juggernaut)
8) Blockade Runner/MTT 2-way tie
10) Virago
Right on. I didn't present those findings because I didn't have the hard data in front of me the way we did with the figures poll, but we're going forward with your and Tycho's idea to do another vehicles poll and then present THAT data to Hasbro.

Most importantly, thank them for the great job they've done so far this year, with special note to the new vehicles

You know I'm jumping on the Sailbarge bandwagon. But, they proved they could do it with the Falcon!I brought up the sailbarge again, and keep in mind, that's a Q&A question I sent in 2 weeks ago, so they're REALLY getting it from us on that.

As for the Cantina, Tycho and I were discussing that with Hasbro and they know how important it is to get product from that, so that's an interesting "in" for the Sailbarge.

Are the Lars family from AOTC on the radar for the next few years? I think they are the last glaring hole in the line.Tycho discussed that with them over the poll results on Saturday while I was rushing down from the Hasbro Transformers panel, so he'd know what they had to say.

See if you can weasel out some info on what they have planned for Indiana Jones in 2009. I really want some more beasts - the horse (repainted in brown, black, etc), camels, and elephants. I want the three elephants from Temple of Doom in 3-3/4" scale!Sorry, I just couldn't see a way to shoehorn an Indy question in there without it fouling the pacing (this in-person Q&A is like a conversation, and my list was already screwing that up :p). But they showed basic figures for Indy '09 at the panel, the images are already up.

Based on the new poster:

*What's up with Dooku's holographic-but-painted saber?
*Since the BD figures are meant to be "all-new," why are they forcing us to get repacks of Yaddle and Even Piell if we want to build the droid? Will there be a GH army builder or something in that wave so we can get the part without getting the same Jedi?I didn't ask about either of these in Q&A, but I did talk to them during the poll discussion about the Yaddle/Even Piell set and how BAF works into that, they didn't confirm that specific part but the GH sets are meant to ensure that if folks don't want to buy every new figure or every old figure, there's still a second chance in the wave to get the part. If you like, put them in Q&A poll thread, and add to the second one about specific parts forcing specific sales, and that being a common BAF strategy.

This is one I actually wish I had remembered to add, it interested me from an academic standpoint rather than a personal one, I was more curious to the "why" of it, but putting this together was tough and that one just fell through the cracks. Put it in the Q&A poll thread and I'll definitely add it.

This is one I knew I was probably not going to ask at the con, but will wait a few months and then ask in Q&A once we see how sales of the BMF and AT-TE have gone. I personally highly doubt we'll see repaints of either, but I'd like to see Hasbro's take anyway. Drop it in the Q&A poll thread too, I'm not sure I'd ask it in the next few rounds but at least by then it'd be there for when it is time.

This would give these items much-needed context.Tycho and I were discussing the context issue with Hasbro, they actually were making the point for us on the Comic Packs. But then your point about the novel popped into my head and it got shot down hard, the reasoning being A) the comic packs are a relationship with Dark Horse, who doesn't make novels; and B) the comic packs are meant to work with collectors of all ages, and kids want something visual to give the item context when it's not a movie product. Since we discussed some of it outside of Q&A, I didn't ask the rest of it in Q&A. In hindsight, I didn't realize how you were talking about non-comic pack sets, stuff from the EU that isn't comic 2packs, so if you like, throw that part at the Q&A poll.

Or just phrase it as, "Cliegg Lars could come with a gun, a removable leg, and a flying chair. This is so cool even Mr T would say, "Damn, that's one cool toy!" and buy a few thousand. Yet you refuse to make him. Are you guys on crack or PCP?Too bad Larry Hama distracted you from asking it that way. :D

Ask them when Transformers and G.I. Joe will be proper DVD treatments! :thumbsup:Different dept..

Ask if the Transformers movie and the silly looking photos are any reason to be really, really worried about the GIJoe movie.Different dept., and I suspect it'd be tough to get them to go that far off the record (Tycho and I got some off-the-record material out of them, but only as it pertains to SW).

Or ask them if the new GI Joe Resolute cartoon is Hasbro's form of preemptive damage control because they know that the live action movie is going to really tick off all of the loyal GI Joe fans. You know, I saw the director of the series somewhere at a panel, but I cannot remember where. Was it the Clone Wars book panel? I don't remember. Maybe it was Starship Smackdown even. I dunno, that person cropped up and I wish I could have gotten a no-comment out of him with that question just to read his face when it came up. :p

Yes, more than just the bio on the packaging. I dunno if they could/would even extend this to including playable video game demos . . . probably not, but it's worth asking.Wow, way to swing for the fences!

That was a great read, thanks for the work JT.

Loved the Speedbiker question.... as it has been really bugging me. Their answer came as a surprise

Thanks for all the news JT, great job!

Interesting that we shouldn't expect realistic CW figures in the near future. Based on the "EU" waves the last few years I was expecting realistic CW figures to be the focus of next year's wave as well. If this is the case then hopefully the 2009 EU wave will actually feature characters from the novels and games rather than the TV shows.

Can't wait to hear news from Tycho!

That would have been interesting to get his non-verbal reaction to the question. Either it would have been, "What are you talking about, crazyman?" Or, "Crap! They're onto us!!":D

We need 100% of fans to show their support for the Millennium Falcon

Ouch!:upset: So it's my duty as a lifetime Star Wars fan to buy this? Well, since they put it that way (and since I really want a BMF AT-AT) I might as well make the sacrifice.;)

Glad you guys enjoyed it. The speederbike wasn't entirely a surprise, I was glad they were looking into it, I was bummed that they can't find it, but it's not the first recent mold they've lost. We've got to keep on them about that though so they either find it or just do a new one.

No realistic CW figures is going to be a big thing I suspect.

BB, the look on his face either way would have been priceless. :D

My thinking about Hasbro saying we have to support it is really more about we have to WANT to support it, if that's not the way the market is going, then it doesn't get done, it's not as much about conscious choices as it is about market trends. But I fully intend to buy the Falcon none the less. :p
