View Full Version : Possible re-tooling of the Republic Gunship?

Hi guys.
I was doing some searching for reference pics of the Clone Wars gunship for a set of upgrade parts i am making for mine(Front doorway hatch, new front turrets which ACTUALLY move correctly, new more accurate missile launchers on top, thinner wings and the new "forward hatches" which seal off the rear compartment), and i found the image from the box art of the new release of the Gunship...
According to the image on the boxart (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g19/All_the_good_usernames_are_taken/Misc%20junk/Gunship__scaled_600.jpg), they have all those mods on the box...
Now, i KNOW they probably just got a CW render for the box, and i KNOW it's VERY UNLIKELY they will re-tool the Gunship...
I KNOW this...
But...
Is it likely?
Is it possible they have re-worked the master?
Has anyone seen this item out of the box in any preview sites?
Thanks for any info guys.

Nothing has been changed apart from the deco. Hasbro confirmed this in a Q&A sometime.

Excellent!
Thanks for that info.
I am glad my work will not be in vain!!!

Isn't MSRP $50? The last gunships were $30. A new paint job isn't worth $20.

I suppose, but the Gunship has always been a "buy it while you can" type of deal...(And they can go for huuuge amounts on Ebay if the timing is right).
I am working on a set of upgrade parts right now(Ostensibly for ME), which will add the new forward bay doors, add the blast shields on both doors, block off the front hatch(And add the new mount for the bubble turrets).
I will see how the work goes and post pics here when i am done.

Please do. I'm always impressed with what you do and I am always interested in anything related to the Republic Gunships. I have 5 (1 CW, 2 AotC, and 2 RotS).

I have a Photobucket gallery.

Feel free to ask any questions.

I have you beat, but only by one...(I have three AOTC, 1 CW and 2 ROTS).
And thanks for the kind words.
I have replaced the forward cannons on the RG with small two-piece plastic bubbles(that are sold in airports here with a small chewable toothbrush in them!!!). I have made what i see as an ingenious solution to the problem posed by the "missile-firing" cannons as provided on the toy. First i removed the original cannons. Then i glued the bubbles in place, and i placed small neodymium magnets inside before they were secured. After this, i made new cannons, and placed very small magnets at the base of the barrel. This means with the magnets inside(Which are free-floating), are attracted to the magnets on the gun barrels, and holds them in place very securely(But not so securely they can't be re-positioned).
Here is where i'm at right now(This build will be "pure" CW movie, in that it will have no bubble-turrets, or front doors, and will have the two sets of hatches for the rear compartment).
Here are the pics of what i have done so far(The popsicle sticks are just to brace the forward doors in place as the glue sets).
Also, anyone who has one of these will understand how radically i have altered the thickness of the wings:

Very nice, Bar! Those wings look REALLY thin!!!

I assume you'll probably be getting the Lucky Lekku WM Gunship?

I am hoping to get 2-3 of them, but if I can find paint to match the body and therefore get rid of the individualized paint job making it a generic ship, I will get more.

Very nice, Bar! Those wings look REALLY thin!!!
I TOTALLY removed the lower half, and skinned the top half to remove all the screw recievers and framework.
Then i skinned the bottom with styrene and rebuilt the lower frames.
I still have to fabricate the cupolas that frame the lower part of the ball turrets on the wings, and do all the scribing/panelling work.
I am currently out of the hardener for the sillicone i use, but when more arrives, i will mix up a batch and cast the forward doorways. Then i will use the first casting to super-detail, cut out the windows, and scribe the panels.
I will post pics here when the first castings are done.

I assume you'll probably be getting the Lucky Lekku WM Gunship?
Surprisingly, probably not...
If the tooling hasn't changed, i won't need it...(Unless the Lucky Lekku decal is seperate...)
And even then, if anyone here gets the new Gunship and could scan the decal for me, i could reproduce it that way... If not, i will just use this image (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g19/All_the_good_usernames_are_taken/Misc%20junk/gunship_art02.jpg).

I am hoping to get 2-3 of them, but if I can find paint to match the body and therefore get rid of the individualized paint job making it a generic ship, I will get more.

I will be mixing up some paint to get the base colour, and i will be making two variants:
An AOTC version(Only the back doors and it will have two properly scaled bubble turrets (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g19/All_the_good_usernames_are_taken/Model%20stuff%20Misc/Gunshipmodspartone3.jpg)), and
Lucky Lekku TCWM version(With no front doorways, and the new front hatch doors too).
But the beauty of these builds is that i could do one paint scheme, take a lot of pics, and then re-paint it. Because most of my "colleagues" are abroad and will never see the actual model, the pics are the most important part for me! If i save the images, then the model can last forever in the images!

Are you going to offer any parts for sale?

Bar
09-05-2008, 12:56 PM
Well i am not sure about that.
I certainly don't want to step on Hasbro's toes.
But surely if they DON'T intend to produce upgrade parts, and only release the Gunship "as is", i can't be doing aything that bad by making a few sets for collectors.
I'd leave that up to you guys to decide on the legality of it.
What say you?

These 2 guys don't seem to have a problem...

I think as long as you say "custom" and say something to the effect that you're not affiliated with LFL or Hasbro, you should be okay.

Okay.
I see what you're saying(God, the size of those turrets just goes to show how NOT 1/18 the Gunship really is!!!)
That's cool.
I will not be ebaying these panels though.
If i DID make a few, it would just be done to whoever wanted them here.
I wouldn't make any money, just cover my costs.
But i will not guaratee these will go on sale. When i have done a job on them that i consider them GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME, they will probably satisfy you guys!!!
One thing i will say right now, is that the front doorway covers will probably not cantilever open like the back ones(It would be so difficult to engineer, i'd need to take apart each Gunship to do it!!!). I am working on a system where it can be held closed, or open, but there will be no mechanism for opening it with a hinge...
I am looking into the best system for attaching the pieces, of course. I am thinking a few well-placed magnets might be in order.
If that's the best way, i will get a supply of them and offer them with the pieces.

I saw this at Wal-Mart and was planning to get it. Fifty bucks for a gunship I didn't need, but I was a sap for the customizable decals.

Well, they're not customizable. The Twi'ilek female on the nose is painted on, and you can't opt for another design nor use the spare decal for another gunship. So for fifty bucks, I really can't make myself buy it, despite how cool the nose art looks.

But on the plus side, for about as much money, I can get the Conquest and Rattler from Target, and I probably will.

I will have to make a mold for casting mine, so a few more sets won't break the bank.
To fully explain, my new doors will not EXACTLY replicate the ones from Clone Wars, but WILL fit into place with the standard Gunship.
There is a small tab removed from the "canon" movie-version rear-doors, which is then added to the new front doors.
I will not be adding this. The reason for that is that if one of you guys wants a set, no mods will be required to fit the new doors.
I am also thinking of offering a set of "front-hatch-blanks"(As there are no front hatches on the new Clone Wars Gunship, to give you the option of blanking the front doorway off).
Of course, they WILL have to be painted...

Very cool! I think this is a worthy concept, Hasbro's simply not going to deliver this anytime soon, and they're simple designs to adapt this way.

If you take any in-production shots, LMK and I'll post 'em in news as a fan project.

Okay.
Sorry for the delay in this reply. I'm just really busy with work right now.
I got the Gunship from work on my way past today, and taped all the parts on for some pics.
The fit of these parts is pretty lousy right now(And they don't properly adhere to the curves of the rear doors or the existing frames), so what i intend to do is secure them from the rear, tape off the frames and skin them with filler. When the filler is solid, i will sand it all back, and the fit will be perfect. Then it's just a matter of scribing the filler skin, and making molds.
I am also going to make the blanks for the forward doors as mentioned above. I have one blank frame done. I will skin it the same as the other doors. They will also have the new "mounts" on the lower part(I represented them by just drawing it black). Although we haven't seen the new mounts used for anything in any episodes, it is my belief that in a later episode, they intend to re-attach the bubble turrets to the new Gunship mesh, and those little mounts would be perfect for fixed bubble turrets. I suppose it gives them the option of adding them later, even if they never use it.
Anyway, here are some pics. If you want any more, or specific views, let me know.

Thank you, my friend!
I know what you mean. But the engineering factors of adding new doors and making them pop open like the rears would be tough for Hasbro to do.
And there are probably only a handful of people(Like you and i!), who actually care!

I wouldn't need them to pop open like the rear doors.

Seriously though... They're multimillion dollar toy company that make animatronic dinosaurs and ponies. Couldn't they scrape up a couple of interns to make add-on doors for this thing?

I know what you're saying, but SERIOUSLY, it would mean at least $40-$70,000 worth of manufacturing tooling to make new molds.
Injection molding is an expensive business.
If it were ME doing this, i'd make a new master for the Gunship hull, with no front doors, and that would give room for a new set of arms so the front doors could also pop open.
If only i could get a job at Hasbro...

Just for you to realise why the delay in this, i am working on a "what if?" starship design right now that is meant to be an interim fighter between the Eta-2 and Vader's Tie X-1 Advanced. It's a ship that more accurately can be called a Sith Starfighter, as it will have been piloted by Vader after the Clone Wars, but before ANH.
I am calling it the Eta-3.
It started off as a standard Eta-2 model kit(I wanted it to look more like the original Jedi Starfighter, but also with elements of the Imperial Star Destroyer too), and it quickly progressed(When it's finished, i will get right on the gunship):
