View Full Version : Most overrated actors and actresses

Who are the most overrated actors and actresses in your opinion?

Mine are:

1. Keanu Reeves. Plays the same character in every movie.

2. Dustin Hoffman. Never really cared for him except for in Rainman.

3. Brenda Frasier. Just can't compete with the greats. Miscast for the Mummy series.

4. Freddy Prince, Jr. - Has he done a good movie?

5. Matthew Lillard - Ditto. (except Scream)

1. Julia Roberts - Way overpayed for the work she does. She is good, but I have never seen her do anything to test her limits as an actress.

2. Sarah Michelle Gellar - While not as in the same league as most super actresses, her parts have been lame and her characters all tend to be the same. Buffy is an overrated show as well.

3. Heather Graham - Does good movies, but not that great.

4. Jennifer Aniston - Her movies aren't that great unless you count Office Space. Just got lucky getting cast on an amazing TV show. The guys, plus Phoebe is what is keeping the show going and is the main reason for the success.

What are yours?

1. Leonardo DiCaprio: (AKA DiCraprio) Highly overrated by alot of people, thankfully the Star Wars fans are not one of the groups. When he was rumored for Anakin, we united and stated, "Hell no!"

2. Keanu Reeves: Agreed he plays almost the same part in every movie that he is in. Should have stuck with his Bill and Ted type roles, then try to play serious roles.

3. Arnold Schwartzenegger: Used to be a decent, when he was properly cast as the tough guy cop or killer cyborg. Then he went soft and started making kiddie movies. Hasn't had a really great film or a box office hit since True Lies. :(

1. Julia Roberts: Only movie of hers that was really any good (IMHO) was "Pretty Woman" and that's not saying much. I never really considered her all that "pretty" either.

2. Sharon Stone: She was great in Total Recall and Basic Instinct, but thats all. Everything else she has done, has been mediocre at best. I doubt if she will ever do another movie that's really good.

3. Linda Hamilton: Was great in Terminator I and II, but for the life of me I cannot name another film that she has done. And now that the rumors say that she has said no to T3, she is turning her back on the role that gave her a name.

Directors: Bonus Catagory
By far the worst director in hollywood, who is very very over-rated for the crap that many call cinema is of course:Michael Bay. With films like Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, and of course the horrendous Pearl Harbor. I can't see why so many people like him and his movies so much.

Chris"lobotomy" Klein and Penelope"horse face" Cruz

Bonus Category: Tim Burton.

Actor - Tom Cruise. Ugh.
Nice call on Chris Klein :) In the trailer for We Were Soldiers, I'm not sure if he's talking to Mel Gibson or the college girl in the car from American Pie.

Bonus category: Steven Soderbergh

I agree with Caesar.
I think Tom Cruise is OK, but he is not as great as some have made him out to be. Good actor, yes. Great actor, no.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say Ben Stiller.
He is funny, yes, but I think that he is made out to be some kind of comedy king. He is not.
I love some of his movies, like "Meet the Parents" and "Theres Something about Mary", but I can think of some others that are funnier. For example, I think Mike Myers and Austin Powers are better comedies.
As far as actresses, I think Nicole Kidman is very overrated. Did anyone see "The Others"? Then you know what I am talking about.
I agree in that Julia Roberts is overrated. To me she is not attractive. She looks like a drug addict, with that bony face and skinny legs. Yuck.

5. Keanu Reeves
4. Natalie Portman
3. Haley Osment
2. Sarah Michelle Gellar
1. Any pop star

I've only seen Ben Stiller in "There's Something About Mary" and I thought he was really good and a natural actor.

I have to agree with Julia Roberts, there's something about her that's just really borning.

Also Penelope Cruz, I don't know weather it's just me but she always seems very wooden.

The perfect example of a great actress is Cameron Diaz:
She's natural, I always feel like sh'e making up the diolog as she goes along, she's versatile, I could see her playing any part and playing it well, she's gorgeous and she's got a great smile.

She always makes the film hers!

Ah, I forgot Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore, Tom Green and Mike Myers (he's funny, but alot of his jokes are running gags that really need a rest)

I agree with Penelope Cruz. So far the movies I have seen her in she has played the same character. Not a fan.

I can't stand Brendan Fraiser, but I did like monkey bone(sadly).
How about alicia silverstone. Did anyone see the movie they made TOGETHER! Blast from the past, uhg. Chris Walken was funny though.
Liv tyler can sometimes be very annoying, It just seems that she's not even trying sometimes.

-Keanu Reeves--good in Bill and Ted because he is Ted. Bad in everything else with the possible exception of The Gift. Keanu makes a good wife-beater. People say he's good in the Matrix, but I believe it's the movie's concept that carries him through.

-Jim Carrey--I loved The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, but in no way did I think he was "robbed" of Oscar nominations for them like some people did. He isn't that good. Also, The Grinch was pure tripe and Ron Howard should stick to directing sappy crap-fests like A Beautiful Mind. So ha.

-George Clooney--Haven't liked him in anything except O Brother Where Art Thou?. I have to admit, he's the only person I feel escaped Batman and Robin with any dignity whatsoever.

-Julia Roberts--Blech! Haven't seen any good movies with her in with the exception of Hook, and that's because she wasn't in it enough to screw it up.

-Winona Ryder--After her Tim Burton years, everything has gone down the crapper. Girl, Interrupted? Nah! No wonder she's resorted to shoplifting and taking drugs.

-Heather Graham--Haven't seen her act well in anything, and the only thing I feel she didn't screw up was Twin Peaks.

-Michael Bay--Nuff Said

-Ron Howard--Nothing good but Willow.

I guess that's it.

Keanu Reaves
Tom Cruise
Penelope Cruz
Demi Moore
Julia Roberts (I know I'll get flak for this one, but she always plays "Julia Roberts and her big ol' horse teeth pretending to be so-and-so," not just so-and-so)

02-20-2002, 02:36 PM
I agree with you Mike Troxell on George Clooney. He was only good in O Brother Where Art Thou? and he was also good in Ocean's 11. IMO he was the worst Batman to date. And it looks like a lot of people also don't like Julia Roberts. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

To be brief- I agree with every choice Sithdroid seconded, they are all among the leaders.
My top OR actor(I'm gonna hear about this): Tommy lee jones. I saw that horrible fugitive remake, then I somehow got fooled into watching the one where he yells at those helicopters with the lava and whatever, and the guy is such a phony, one note, emoting waste of celluloid in every movie vehicle he's ever driven (usually in a relentlessly straight line, I might add)
Bruce willis and Kevin costner tie for second.
Actress- Liv Tyler( had to be SOMEONE)
Bonus Category(director)- Either Tim Burton or Francis ford coppola, or Stanley Kubrik. (tantamount to BLASPHEMY, eh Stillakid?)

I'll forgive Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall any crap they might crank out for thier outstanding roles in Lonesome Dove.

I agree with the Coppola comment. Did anyone else make the mistake of watching Jack? Kubrik, however, is a different matter. While I feel he is overrated in some cases, he had an idea about making movies that didn't mesh with what most people think making movies is about. I can be fascinated while watching some of his films and still think the film is mediocre. Eyes Wide Shut for example. Not a particularly good film, but look at what he did with it. He took the concept of sexiness/lust/nudity/soft core porn on film and completely turned it on its head. Everything about the film from the marketing to the rumors on set while it was shooting suggested it was an erotic thriller. But even though there was tons of nudity and sex in the film, in no way does it ever come close to being erotic. In fact, it often has the opposite effect on the viewer. That says something about Kubrik to me that keeps him out of the "You suck as a director" category.

I also forgot about Kevin Costner. Thank you for bringing that up. Has he even done a decent movie? Think of the flops that he has been in: Waterworld, The Postman, Message in a Bottle, Tin Cup, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Wyatt Earp, etc... The list is too long to mention. The only good movies he has been in are Dances With Wolves and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Robin Hood was a good movie, but he was horrible in it.

hey sith droid,

how are matther lilard and freddie prinz, jr. on your list? they aren't even close to being "rated", much less "over rated". as for matthew lillard, "most annoying" is a better category.:D

i don't have a problem with the big stars, unless they start trying to talk politics and sound smart, but some of them do bug me, like:

david arquett
chris rock in any move(stick to stand up)
robert de nero doing comedy
goldie hawn on any talk show(just sad)
julia roberts thinking she is erin brockovitch
tom cruise having to yell in every film
woody harelson and his hemp fetish
winona ryder(my favorite actress) and her stupid movies she's been making. for god's sake, she's in an adam sadler film!!!

Well stated :)

Mabudon, I cannot argue with your examples of The Fugitive and Volcano ("What is a geological event?"), but I absolutely loved him in Lonesome Dove. Imagine my deflation when the role was filled by Jon Voight for Return to Lonesome Dove

- Will Smith
- Brad Pitt
- I agree, any pop star
- Sports stars
- Halle Berry (didn't like the Storm performance, cheesy)

I am sure there are many more, but I can't think of them at the moment.

In light of recent events, I must add Gillian Anderson to my list of over rated actresses. Not only is she bug eyed and frumpy, she's A DIRTY LITTERBUG!
