We may add more lasers/flourochromes, but I'd say I'll be doing flow cytometry until the day I retire. My wife works in epigenetics and is always having to brush up on new techniques and learn new platforms. We're lucky to get a new flow cytometer or a sorter every 10 years or so. Of course the 10,000 other things that arise out of our research are always demanding new and better ways to be explored, but that's what collaborators are for.

I work with electrodes and seperations. Nano is really screwing everything we thought we knew. But good thing is also appears to be the limit since we're talking atoms in some cases for thickness.

I'm just waiting for electron microscopes to be replaced by quark microscopes. Then we'll be able to see everything.

Probably not. I'd rather have a stepped up FIB (focused ion beam) that does sci-fi type damage, not microscopic drilling of 40nanometer hole damage etc.

I don't. Unless it has to do with monkeys shooting harpoon guns.

No monkeys, but zombies might be an appropriate description.

So have you figured out who did it yet? They wrap these things up in under a hour on TV including all the genetic testing that takes days in research labs.

Minus tox, this was solved in under 5 minutes because of about 20 witnesses.

We have to give urine samples at work periodically. Ostensibly, it's just to test for radioactivity in those of us who use it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they also do drug testing. At any rate, I always eat a bunch of asparagus the night before I'm due. I pity the person who has to open it up, but it also makes me laugh.

Tee-Eye, even if you can't tell us any specifics, can you point our browsers to a newspaper story about the case you were talking about?

OK, I'm good to go on this. Press releases have been issued.

A 911 call comes in from a trailer park (where else?) regarding a man covered in blood wielding a pair of hedge shears and swinging it at residents in the park who are trying to help him, or at least find out what's going on.

Deputies arrive at the same time as paramedics and he runs off "growling and gurgling" between trailers. He's found hiding at the rear of a trailer and he's ordered to throw out the shears and come out. The guy complies, but as he's coming out, he reaches for the door of one of the trailers and begins to break in.

Not knowing if he's armed with anything else, and concerned for the residents inside, a deputy deploys her Taser and jolts the guy to stop him from getting into the trailer. Down he goes and deputies and EMTs jump on him. He's bundled up and shipped off to the hospital.

I get there with my partner and we start working the crime scene with detectives. Without going into great detail, what we found out was that minutes earlier, the guy had attempted suicide with a .44 magnum revolver! That's the reason the guy was bloody. He had placed the gun under his chin and pulled the trigger. The bullet (which we recovered) passed through his chin, took out his tongue (remember "growling and gurgling"?), and exited through the top of his forehead. His frontal lobes were pretty much history, I would imagine, but he was still able to function violently even after such a traumatic event! Witnesses said he was pretty much acting like a zombie.

I just find it really incredible that he was able to survive after using such a large caliber weapon. His wounds are not life-threatening, but he certainly will not be the same after all is said and done. This still has the lot of us shaking our collective heads. Unbelievable!

Basically spicy marinaded beef ribs with the meat thinly sliced off the bone. They also do other traditional dishes. The grill is right in front of you, so they leave the meat for you to do. They also have a bunch of other dishes that were cooked in a pan on a burner brought to the table too.

The creepy part is he broke into a cabinet where cremated remains are stored pending disposition (for transport to other locals or internment). He removed and fondled a couple of urns. I was able to get latent prints from them. Hopefully, he has a record and is in the system.

Exactly, but reporting that doesn't get people to tune in. Instead you have to make it sound like the worst thing since Spanish Flu and make everyone think they're in imminent danger of dying. That's why I quit watching the news on T.V. I'm almost ready to give up the newspaper too.

There are actually 2 TIE fighters in that picture, both boxed. The other one is just behind the smaller one, but it has the more acurate scaled wings, and makes the one you can see kinda dwarfed in comparison. Here is the whole picture...

(Full disclosure, I'm funded by the NSF). But the rest of the media seem to be picking this up now after 3 months.

Here we go again.

I haven't heard or read anything about this in any of the journals I subscribe to yet. It may be because of yet another faction beating a dead horse and the editors are tired of the same old song. Are we talking about Frye Standards and Daubert Standards here? It sounds like it.

In the early 1990's defense lawyers tried to take on the science of fingerprints as being junk science. To date, I think there have been close to 50 court challenges regarding the science and all have been shot down in flames. Fingerprints are here to stay. Why judges still allow Daubert hearings is beyond me.

It sounds like now it tool marks' turn. Both sides of the question always have agendas IMO. Not being familiar with this controversy, it's hard to comment without knowing more about this. If NSF and NIST go after tool marks, will they lead the charge against ballistics as well?

I will say these challenges in the long run are a good thing. On my side of the aisle, it's been pointed out that we need to improve our peer review and not just go with something because "Bob's a good guy and he knows what he's talking about". Historically, peer review in a lot of forensic sciences have left a lot to be desired. These challenges have helped in that regard.

PB, if you can point me towards some online articles about this, I'd appreciate it.

On face value, it looks like another p!ssing match between the Eggheads and us Neanderthals.

Thanks for the link to the NY Times article, PB. Wow, where to begin. There's some misinformation in the article, some points where the reporter "didn't get it" with his research and some good, valid points. This would take some time to address his article and I just don't have the time nor the inclination to that just now. I'm tired! I had a nasty gang shooting last night (which spilled into the city limits, so the city coppers got to deal with their four victims....I had just one, thankfully). No problem. I think its more intended that NIST and NSF want to demonstrate the validity, reproducibility and the predictive nature of everything (which is what "hard" science is/does). It's not the disproof of anything, more an explanation of why it will always work and be true.

I work in one of the stupidest designed buildings ever. Each floor is designed as a DNA Double Helix (I think it's a GC ladder). Each floor is the requisite degrees turned from the next, walls are odd shaped, coridors appear and disappear, students, faculty and staff get lost when not in their areas. And after the hospital (which has 4x the volume) is the costliest building to heat and cool due to it's shape.

TeeEye7

Those are some examples that worked, but try asking about specific EU figures that aren't in Legacy. Or for better distribution, more intelligent case designs, or simply not requiring us to buy a $50 set of stuff we already have for one figure.

Mr. JabbaJohnL
05-18-2009, 01:42 PM
I will agree that distribution is sucking mightily right now. But I got that Endor set to which you're referring and I got it a year and a half ago, so I'm all set. :p

Bingo. Which is one of the screwy things about right now, there really is no benefit to multipacks. Up till this year, the price per figure in comic and battle packs was $1-2 less than a carded figure. So waiting made sense if not grabbing a comic/battle pack.

You saw those sets on clearance? Lucky. I saw 'em marked down, but only to around $35.

I'm annoyed that Zap is only in a multipack, but at least he comes with other guys we don't have (especially Chuckles and Wet Suit). I'm more miffed that Mindbender comes in a set with new Cobra army builders. I would've probably gotten two or more of them, but there's not much to do with extra bald guys who run around wearing capes and monocles and not much else.

Mind you, I can't wait for the Mindbender. I just wish he wasn't in there to keep me from getting more, like the Snake Eyes in the Red Ninjas, or Firefly in the Greenshirts, or the ubiquitous Darth Vader in the Stormtroopers.

I just want to say, 6 hours of capillary electrophoresis, and no results. Tomorrow, I apply monkey wrenches to "fix" the problem.
