Showering and using soap would help with that.

Depending on what parts you use the soap on (and how long you soap up said parts) it might actually increase it.

I just spent 2½ hrs. in my car for a "drive-thru" flu shot clinic held by our local community college and health department. Everybody and their mother decided to show up. Over 90 minutes of that wait, however, was due to a three car and a city bus collision right by the entrance.

Now I've got to get ready for work. What a great way to spend my morning!

Ok, no need to add a bottle of bourbon after the chilli has been cooked. Wait, yeah there is. Half of us "professional" lab techs and 3 grad students didn't quite make it past 1 PM today.

I'm running around the house doing the cleaning whilst only in my u-pants and singing The Shaggs' "It's Halloween" at the top of my lungs!!!

It's Halloween, it's Halloween
It's time for scares, it's time for screams
It's Halloween, it's Halloween

The ghosts will spook, the spooks will scare
Why, even Dracula will be there!
It's time for games, it's time for fun
Not just for one but for everyone

The jack-o-lanterns are all lit up
All the dummies are made and stuffed
By just looking, you will see
It's this time of year again

It's Halloween, it's Halloween

All the kids are happy and gay
There doesn't seem to be a cloud in their way
But when it's over, and they've had all their fun
They'll wish that Halloween had just begun

[guitar, um, solo]

Oh, there are witches, goblins, vampires, devils, Frankensteins and zombies
And there are tramps, Cinderellas, pirates, angels and Gypsies
So let's have lots of fun and give many cheers
For Halloween comes but once a year

It's time for games, it's time for fun
Not just for one but for everyone

It's Halloween! It's Halloween! It's Hal-lo-ween!
It's Haaal-loooo-weeen!

It's Halloween!

Two Taco Bells gone? We've had a couple close here over the years, but I think it may have to do with location perhaps, and 2 were torn down and rebuilt in a newer updated design, one of them had a Long John's added. I still like the black jack taco, perhaps I will have one for lunch. I forgot about the free one on Halloween.

It's not that they are failing, it's the whole Iowa River deciding to break through levies, flood everything that washed them away and insurance wouldn't pay enough to restore the building. Just about everything else was either rebuilt or relocated and still not one celebutard has cried for us or said what a shame we haven't gotten our money yet like they have with New Orleans.

One of our deputies shot a pit bull last night that was launched at them while trying to arrest a knucklehead on a warrant at his residence (the dog was only slightly wounded). This is the third dog shooting in as many months that I've worked. Seems to be the new tactic of the bad guys. None of the dogs have fared well, though.

In all my years, I have never seen a pit bull that big. I was expecting it to wear a saddle. I wonder how many kids it ate at Halloween.

Pretty close. We have a multi-agency task force at our facility with Feds, State, and local resources (read into that what you will). Depending on how big the lab is will determine who prosecutes. Also, this ain't hillbilly chemists for the most part, this is Mexican drug cartels hiring poor schmucks to cook meth here in the US in unbelievable conditions and locations.

So do you charge them with assault with a deadly canine?
Close. They are charged with assault on a peace office, a felony. Guns, knives, vicious dogs, spears, arrows...it all counts.

Animal cruelty. Dogs are pets, not bullet proof vests.
I agree. The dog is only trying to make its master happy as it was trained. We don't take any joy in this but the officer has a right to protect himself. We were all horrified on this one as we were thinking, "What if it were a salesman or Girl Scout coming to the door?". There were no windows or peep holes to see who was there....they just launched the dog.

I guess I should have explained that we, along with Probation, were doing "knock 'n' talks"....checking up on our illustrious clientele to see that they were adhering to their terms of probation and just generally behaving themselves (this is a weekly exercise at most; nightly at best). Probation Officers have more rights to access their/our clients than we do, so we just "happen" tag along to see what might be. We were extending salutations to a group of our clients. That's the reason for the large show of force on our part. The rocket scientist robbers just happened by at a fortuitous time for us.

When they're close enough to see (usually they're out past the horizon) you can see them bobbing up and down even in calm seas. I've heard all of the stories of them having footprints a quarter of the way up the walls and, with how we were getting tossed around last night, I can believe it.

The only thing I hate about rough seas is that I get super sleepy. Thankfully I don't get sea sick in the least but moving rhythmically like that just makes me wanna crawl into bed.

Yes! Brian Dugan was sentenced to death for the 1983 murder of a young girl. This case was big here in Illinois, because three men were tried and convicted for the killing. One of those men later had the charges dropped, but the other two were sentenced to death. Later the cases were overturned and eventually the two were released, but 7 prosecutors were tried, in a case named the "Dupage 7" (just going by memory here).

Does working something like that make it tough to sleep? Do you have pictures of what you see running through your mind or are you desensitized from working on it for so long?

I'm successful in leaving about 99% of work at work. But every once in a while a case will get to you, like the one about which I posted above. The decedent was only 18 years old and the other victim's birthday was the next day (I believe he was turning 19).. It's sad and maddening to see the waste of such a young life, especially over such non-issues and what color clothing you wear or what part of town you dare walk in. Utter stupidity. It's these little revelations as you go on into the investigation that strike your humanity.

I'm not desensitized to it. I see plenty of sights that make me cringe on a regular basis. I just have a mechanism (like the rest of my colleagues) that allows me to tolerate the unpleasantness of and my work. I don't know what that mechanism is but it's also found with ER docs, nurses, paramedics, firemen who, in my opinion, see much worse than I. This will sound weird, but working homicides for the most part, is a lot "cleaner" (my word) than say paramedics and firemen who respond to traffic collisions, industrial accidents, and the like. I get in on those types of cases from time to time and I find those more difficult to handle because of the visual carnage (and at times the sounds and odors). I guess it all depends on a "certain point of view".

pbarnard
11-12-2009, 09:23 AM
Sadly, it has to do with empathy for them for surviving, while in the homicide case, no one can ever hurt them again.

Okay, I think the swine flu has been blown a little out of proportion (a little? ha!), but why do people seem to think the government is trying to kill or control people by requiring the vaccine (which they don't)? I know it isn't perfect, but, uh, what's better, the minimal chance of complications from a vaccine, or dying from the flu?

If you have a very small child-infant/preganant woman at the time it is very (deadly) serious, since they seem to be hit the worst. People 30 and younger seem to have no immunity, so they're just getting hit harder, while people over 30 seem to have an immunity. It isn't that virulent, so that's a good thing for the 5-30 crowd, so after a week they're fine. It is news worthy because it was infecting people not in flu season, in a group not normally hit, and is so wide spread. Pandemic/epidemics don't have to be lethal to be a strain on the public health/general population system.

She's got a small kid who seems to be a bit behind developmentally, probably because he's been parked in front of the TV since the minute he was born, and she's pregnant (after being told following the serious, life-threatening complications from her pregnancy that she should never, ever, ever, ever try to have another kid, but went around to various doctors, not telling them her medical history, until someone told her it'd be okay). I feel really, really sorry for that family. There are complications and risks with any vaccine, but, in her case, she'd be much better with it. Unfortunately, she's about as bright as a bulb that burned out two weeks ago, and is completely un-convincable once she's decided on anything, no matter how ludicrous.

I'm still furious at my bank for not releasing my lottery funds. I'm still broke. My money is on hold.

Is that still going on? I can understand putting a hold on it, but releasing funds from a government check and then putting a hold on it after the fact? That's unethical. I'd look into whether it's legal to do so in your state.

Sounds to me like the bank is trying to get a little more mileage out of your funds. I'd talk to someone about closing the account and take the money to a more reputable bank.

When they release it, I'd ask for it in nickles (and make them count them all out to you twice) and then take it to another bank.

It's like the lesser of two evils. No matter which way you go, it's still evil.

And if you'll notice, I said more reputable. I never said there was a bank that wasn't trying to rip off the customers and the government at the same time, just that there might be one that run by less greedy crooks.

Wow, and I always thought it was to avoid the automatic IRS reporting that happens when you deposit more than $10,000.

Nah, just a bake-in-a-bag season mix. Plus parmesean [sp?] pasta-in-a-box and peas.

HE inhales them through his nose with a $20 bill...like a man. Although I suppose there really is no difference if a woman or child were to inhale them either.
