I actually want this Vegas thing to be over so I can go back to Michigan and see everyone including Cappy. (well, not so much him as the babies. But don't tell him.)

The drinking age was 18 but it wasn't a big deal to the kids. Most locals grew up with the French culture where a little watered-down snort of wine at dinner was the norm. (Even my folks allowed that in our house even before we moved there). There was no excessive under-aged drinking that I remembered, either. Alcohol was pretty much demystified for us.

We used to go to the French Quarter to watch tourist stagger around and be idiots. They were a good source of entertainment.

the hassle of buying a house is a major pain. housing market must not be too horrible in iowa if they aren't eager to sell (even it if means they vacate premises a little earlier than they desired)

Little bit more complicated with University towns and land lords that run academic leases, summer leases, full year leases (as our situation), waiting on the seller to graduate (from dental school in this case) so the sale may not be the problem, just the date of possession, but we're working with each other. Much easier when we both have babies under 3 months old.

Did a riot break out or did some one get arrested? Because like DJ says, no one pays attention to pro-basketball pre-All Star game outside of the last minute, and that's only because sports writers are paid to care (and probalby the only ones who really do). The rest of us only care the last 2 minutes of the play offs, and only because there is no football on.

I'm taking the 2.5 year old to read across america tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it. We took him last year, but 1.5 year olds apparently have the attention span of puppy on speed so we spent more time chasing him around than listening to stories. Now though, reading time is a ritual before bed each night so he should enjoy it more (or fall asleep.)

He was a little overwhelmed when we walked in and there were over 200 people. Luckily, this R.A.A. was sponsored by the Gaithersburg Germantown Jaycees many of whom I have gotten to know well over the last few years and he had seen many of them several times. Seeing a few familiar faces mixed into a sea of kids helped him relax and we sat down and enjoyed several stories. We stopped at a store on the way home and bought 4 more books. I can fill up on TB's value menu for $3.00.
And $5 at Subway (or up to $7-ish if you're thirsty) ain't bad. You get more (and better) food than you do at McDumpster or wherever.

I want to know what McDonald's is doing with all those extra pennies from their Value Meal; other places charge $.99, but they've always been (I think) an even buck. Our tax rate had made a $.99 item $1.07 (now it's more :upset: ), so I could be ready with exact change, but I'd forget at McD's and it would make me look foolish in front of the teenaged cashier to have to dig for another cent! ;)

A Subway got closed a town over, by the health department for making customers sick. They have no plans to re open last I heard. I forget what the thing was that was making them sick, but it wasn't good.

Subway Sucks.
There lunchmeat has gotten thinner (paper-like) and lower quality.
$5 footlong full of paper thin garbage isn't worth it.

Of course I'm pretty tired of all fast food joints, quality keeps getting lower, and lower.

Even firemen. We've got one guy on trial for vehicular manslaughter right now for killing a mom who was riding with her daughter with a learner's permit on their way to church. We Californians go to the polls today to whittle down the list for governor. With the menagerie of characters running (regardless of party) I have C3PO's quote ringing in my ears: "We're doomed!" :ermm:

Time for Chux to produce a bear to make it all better.

All the bears are hoping Poizner crushes Whitman in the primary. Not so much for any political reason, but because, if Whitman wins, Californians will have to hear that godawful music in her campaign ads during every commercial break for the next five months.

Is that the movie where if the buggy goes under 50 MPH, the bomb goes off, killing all aboard?

how can you go wrong combining Scooby & Josie as the template for a cartoon

Anyone need further proof of Hollywood's lack of originality?

The top three movies this weekend were a remake of an 80s movie, a remake of an 80s TV show, and a sequel to a sequel to a sequel to one of the most popular cartoons ever.

the movie in 4th place is a spin-off from another movie as well.

Got a call this evening from the alarm monitoring company that a motion detector was going off. Couldn't get home. This is an easy way to turn your hair gray, get an ulcer, and go into cardiac arrest at one time.

False alarm, in case anyone's wondering. Cops saw nothing suspicious, and a friend with a housekey got there at the same time as two of my wife's other local friends (after the cops left) got there, examined the house inside and out, and verified the location of a few valuables we left in plain sight. I'm sure the local constabulary is going to love me from now on.

In my neck of the woods, you are allowed three false alarms per year. Any more, then you're smacked with a fine (basically to pay for the po-po's response) after that. Then, like my department, if it's deemed habitual (and there's no fixed number for false alarms) any response to that alarm is ignored.

Motion detectors are probably the most finicky part of a system, IMO. I assume it's infrared, so sudden temperature changes like heaters or A/C going on/off can set them off. If that's the problem, it may take a service call for the tech to "aim" the unit away from things like the air registers. Also, if it's an old system, some of the parts become eccentric. I normally have problems with the "switches" on the windows of the south side of my house because of the constant exposure to the sun. Another problem could be animals like cats and dogs left in the house after the system is set. Again, a tech would have to "aim" the sensor higher so as to not have the critters set it off.

Hmm... nine hours over two days isn't enough time to finish a Wimbleton tennis match?

Bel-Cam Jos

But apparently over 11 hours is. The US guy who won the last set 70-68 (Wimbleton makes you win the fifth set by two games, no matter how many it takes) is 6'9" and probably a little tired.

My highest score ever on "easy" Spider Solitaire was 1208, but I prefer "medium." I rarely even try "difficult" anymore.

I think my record for medium (which I primarily played until I vowed to break 1220 points) isn't over 1186 or so. Difficult is really frustrating for me because I hate to lose at anything and most of those can't be solved.

I've had a few updates on computers I've had, so the statistics have been wiped like Threepio's memory. My best at medium (it's currently called "intermediate" now) is right around yours (I seem to recall 1187). I won as many as 15 difficults (now called "advanced" ) while stats were kept; the last time I was 1 for 20 or so. Now: 0 for 2.

What was the game that came with windows systems a few years ago in which there were piles of cards arranged in three pyramids? I seem to recall you had to either clear them in order (A, 2, 3...) or in pairs that added up to some number. (If the game was called pyramid, I'm going to fell really stupid by the way.) I logged a lot of hours on that in my college days.
