Do Stormtroopers count? No? Then Han, and Luke, in that order.....I think.

I've always been a Han fan, but the second? Fett often gets the nod, but if it's hands down, I'll choose R2. A bit of a punk, but with lots o' spunk!
Ben Kenobi and C-3PO. Han is a close third.

Han, Yoda (Vader being a close third).

Han and Vader. Solo is the man. Gunslinger, pilot, and man-with-no-name amoral center.
I was part of the cult of Fett until his aura of mystery was completely destroyed by the prequels.

Like Ji'dai, I say Vader and Han. At their best, they're both badasses in their own way, and they both have great character arcs.

Damn, not sure I could pick just two.
I love Artoo, Threepio, Darth Vader and Han Solo.
Tough choice deciding. I'd have to think about it.

Vader #1. #2, depending on mood, Luke, Han, or Artoo. Very hard decision.

Yoda and Chewie, with Han close behind. (I really wanted to choose Greedo, but I guess he's too minor to be a truly great character.)

Luke Skywalker first, Jabba the Hutt (ROTJ only) second

My 3rd and 4th favorites respectively
Solo (sometimes my first in place of Luke, they're like switch hitters)
Boba Fett in my childhood, but now Jabba (both die horrifically, though Jabba's is the better death...)

When I was young it was Boba Fett and Chewbacca.
After seeing the prequals and Clone Wars, R2-D2 has jumped to the top of the list. The Skywalkers might be what the story of Star Wars is about, but R2-D2 is it's true hero.

I assume we're talking about core characters who are essential to the story:
#1 Darth Vader - the centerpiece of the story (although that wasn't the original intent) and, even though he got a little wussy-fied in the Prequels, he's still just as imposing and bad-*** in the OT as ever. My favorite Darth Vader scene? His final redemption at the end of ROTJ when he rejects the darkness in order to save the life of his son.
#2 is kind of a toss up between Han Solo and R2-D2.
Han Solo - is one of the coolest characters in film history and 99% of that can be credited to Harrison Ford. There is really no way anyone else could play the role of Han Solo.
R2-D2 - my first favorite character and the very first toy I picked out on my own, way back in 1978. The best part about his character is that he's been essentially unscathed by his inclusion in the Prequels. In fact, some of my favorite R2 scenes actually come from Ep3.
While I love the designs of aliens like Barada, Klaatu, Weequay and the Nikto, they don't really count as characters, they're more like extras.
I'm going to cheat:
ANH: Han&Obi-wan kenobi
ESB: Vader...and I think I'll give Lando calrissian a nod
ROTJ: Vader & the emperor

han and lando

As a kid...I always liked Luke the best and then Han...mainly because of the force and his lightsaber...whereas the other (good) characters didn't have those things. But now as an adult...I like Vader the best, and Luke!
