Guitar Hero 5 for Wii. Was going to wait for the price drop (inevitable giving the number of "____ Hero" games this year), but the free Van Hale game offer sucked me in. That, and the ability to form a band with Johnny Cash and Kurt Cobain.

UPS just dropped it off:

Canon PowerShot G10 digital camera (for my upcoming trip). I would have preferred the new G11, but it won't be out until this Fall. Now I've got to start saving for a DSLR. Nikon's D90 looks promising (we use Nikon D200s at work) but I've always favored Canon products. All my film equipment is Canon.

Woo! Hoo! I haven't had a new toy in a loooong time! You do realize you just spent as much as an entry-level DSLR for that G10, right? Look up the Samsung GX-1s, it's a nice DSLR and comes with a decent lens, uses Pentax lenses, standard AA batteries, and shoots on SD cards for well under $400. Still, if I was given the choice between a Canon 30d or a Samsung GX-1s, I'd go with the Canon... although I'm starting to see a lot of little reasons to consider Nikon.

You do realize you just spent as much as an entry-level DSLR for that G10, right?

Yep. Sure did!

I wanted a point-and-shoot on steroids and that's the G-10. Built on a magnesium frame, it's built like a tank. Awesome features and flexibility and best of all, it's not totally menu-driven. It's got cool things called dials and knobs on the top of the camera (like in the olden days) that allow me to make adjustments much, much faster that having to fool around searching through a danged menu! It also has a crazy thingie called a hot shoe where I can attach a modestly-priced flash (Canon's 220EX looks good) to improve over the meager built-in.

I could have picked up a (probably soon to be discontinued) Nikon D40 DSLR two-lens kit for about the same price as the G10. However, my whole plan is to have a good backup camera that won't let me down. (You get what you pay for). Also, I put my faith in camera companies, and not electronics firms who are just trying the photo field. I've had Canon products (both film and digital) through most of 30 years and like the product. I've also been using Nikon products at work for almost 20 years and like their products as well (we currently use Nikon's D200 soon-to-be-a-dinosaur). Their lenses (Canon and Nikon) are hard to beat....and the lens is the heart of the camera.

The DSLR will come later. There's some changes in the wind and I'll bide by time (and save) to see what comes. In the meantime, my little G10 will do fine! *waves hand*

Found the new Clone Wars Y Wing at TRU while I was at lunch today. TRU has reduced the price on the Deluxe Vehicle assortment from $79.99 to $69.99, so it's more in line with WM and Target.

I only plan to get 2 of these, so the price doesn't bother me that much since it's an all new vehicle.

I love these little guys! I can't wait for the Obi Wan EP III JSF CS and the Slave I CS.

Walmart: In their clearance section I found the Evolutions Clone Pilots and Troopers for $10.97 each.
They rang up $24, but had pricetags of the lower price, so the checker entered it manually. That's more than a 50% savings. Somebody goofed I suspect.

Canon Vixia HFS10 High Definition Digital Camcorder / Camera
HDMI Cable (mini to standard)

Actually received the camcorder (http://i36.tinypic.com/2lc89e9.jpg) last Monday but haven’t had a lot of time to play around with it until this past weekend.

The specs:
1/2.6” CMOS image sensor
58mm filter diameter
8 Megapixels
10x optical zoom / 200x digital zoom
2.7” LCD screen (no viewfinder though - a common omission on many new camcorder models)
32 GB internal flash memory storage (also uses removable SDHC [secure digital high capacity] flash memory cards)
Full HD recording at 60i frame rate
Dolby digital AC-3 two-channel sound

The camcorder didn’t come with an HDMI cable so I had to buy a generic one at Walmart for $15. (The Canon-branded HDMI cable is like $70). I thought it odd that Canon wouldn’t include an HDMI cable with an HD camcorder, but the reason is that not all HDTVs can display the "AVCHD" file format that HD video is recorded in (video is recorded using MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression and audio is recorded in Dolby Digital). I can still connect the camcorder to the HDTV with the supplied component cable, but that option results in standard definition video.

However, I was able to connect the camcorder to my Playstation 3 via the included USB cable and use it to play the home video I’ve shot on my HDTV without problem. I can also copy the files from the camcorder to the PS3’s hard drive and play them from there. That’s another plus about the PS3 - it’s capable of playing the “AVCHD” high-def video format recorded from camcorders.

So far I’ve mostly shot video in the “standard” setting, which is 1440 x 1080. I shot some video last night of family at the highest quality setting, which is full HD: 1920 x 1080. I can also shoot video in “cinema mode” which mimics the look of film and can duplicate the frame rate of film as shown in movie theaters as well, or 24 frames per second. The video looks great too - it displays in full 1080p and completely fills the TV’s 16:9 screen.

The model I bought has 32 GB of internal flash memory and can also use removable SDHC memory cards for storage. You can buy HD camcorders with internal, electromechanical hard drives that have a much greater storage capacity, but I was worried that the constant movement while operating a camcorder (as opposed to a computer which is usually stationary during operation and shut down during transport) might decrease the lifespan of the HDD with its delicate moving parts. So I decided to spend a little more money and get a camcorder with storage that used solid state electronics or flash memory, the same stuff in those USB ‘thumb’ drives and memory cards.

Canon recently released another model similar to this one that has 64 GB internal flash memory instead of 32 GB, but I didn’t want to pay an extra $400 for that additional 32 GB. I can get a 32 GB SDHC memory card for around $100, thus doubling the camera’s storage. I figure flash memory cards will only expand in capacity & access speed while dropping in price in the long run anyway.

This morning, I bought some LEGO sets (http://i33.tinypic.com/zkn3nt.jpg), my final haul for September. Kmart has a sale with $5 off many sets from various themes this week. I don’t think it was in their ad, so I'll offer the usual caveats and a hearty “Y.M.M.V.,” but it might be worth checking out. I got:

Clone Walker Battle Pack x2 (clearanced)
Assassin Droids Battle Pack x2 (clearanced)
