Same "rules" as in the 80s thread, 'cept I'm too lazy (like most slacker Gen-Xers at this time :tired: ) to create a list (list... ) right now. What're your songs from Jan.1, 1990 to Dec.31, 1999?

Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Pearl Jam, "Jeremy"
Nine inch Nails, "Closer"
U2, "One"
Counting Crows, "Mr Jones"

I'll give all these a shot later, but want to put some thought into them. I might even be able to drag some non-SW collecting folks into the discussion....

Much like the 80's, I'm not a huge 90's music fan. Nirvana is good, but vastly overrated beyond belief. Same goes for Pearl Jam and Radiohead (though they're better than the others). When it actually was the late 90's, there was of course the dominance of pop artists like NSYNC, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and so on . . . surprise, surprise, ten years later and their music hasn't stood the test of time (even if some of them have gone on to be successful otherwise).

One of, if not my favorite eras of music.

Some of my favorite bands were:

The Grays (one album Ro Sham Bo every song excellent!)
Dada (Puzzle every song excellent!)
Stone Temple Pilots (every song every album excellent!)
Alice in Chains (Dirt every song excellent!)
Soundgarden (also Temple of the Dog off-shoot Say Hello to Heaven & Hunger Strike) with Eddie Vedder of PJ)
Gin Blossoms
Weezer
U2
Sublime
Foo Fighters
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Garbage

Funny some bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam never really thrilled me that much, though I did like some songs they did like Pearl Jam's Corderoy and Nirvana's In the Pines

Lots of one hit bands put out some good stuff. Lots of lame efforts though.

Funny some bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam never really thrilled me that much, though I did like some songs they did like Pearl Jam's Corderoy and Nirvana's In the PinesI had to look up that "In the Pines" because it didn't sound familiar to me. Turns out it is "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" That entire Unplugged performance was great - an excellent example of how to use the format. They didn't just play their hits, but did some lesser known songs, and some great covers, bringing attention to some artists both old and new that people may not have heard of.

I kind of lost track of Pearl Jam after Vitalogy. I did get No Code and Yield a few years ago, but never got into them as much. Those first three albums were all pretty good, with Vs. being my favorite.

The original Leadbelly song was recorded several times and released as both "In the Pines" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" I've heard rumored, but never confirmed, it was also released with the lyric "black girl, black girl, don't you lie to me," under the name "Black Girl," but I think the guy who told me that mixed up his stories and is thinking of Chuck Berry (who had to change a song he called "Brown-Skinned Handsome Man" to "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" prior to recording it, as well as had to change the word "colored*" to "country" in "Johnny B. Goode").

Stone Temple Pilots.
List complete, lock thread.

STP is easily #1 of all-time on my list, but I'll post many of my favorites from my favorite decade of music tomorrow.

Edit - Oops. I made a long post, but it belongs in the 60's thread. I'll post it there.

I thought about my own creation (not not Another Bad Creation's "At the Playground" :p ), and here's my best-represents-the-decade track list, again with artists in no meaningful order:

1. "Love Will Never Do Without You" Janet Jackson
2. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana
3. "Can't Touch This" MC Hammer
4. "Bye Bye Bye" N' Sync
5. "Who Let the Dogs Out?" Baha Men
6. "Black Hole Sun" Soundgarden
7. "End of the Road" Boyz 2 Men
8. "Black or White" Michael Jackson
9. "Hit Me Baby, One More Time" Brittney Spears
10. "Enter Sandman" Metallica
11. "Today" Smashing Pumpkins
12. "Cryin" Aerosmith
13. "Emotions" Mariah Carey
14. "Jump Around" House of Pain
15. "Nothin' But a G Thang" Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg
16. "Never Gonna Get It" En Vogue
Bonus Track: "Genie in a Bottle" Christina Aguilera

Keep in mind, these aren't songs I necessarily LIKE, but ones that sum up that time. There are some here that I despise. :upset:

Semisonic Singing In My Sleep

Excellent call there; good to know someone else appreciates that little gem.

Why would you have several Hole tracks and not "Violet," though? And "Free Fallin'" missed the decade by about six months. (If you're going to count it, might as well cheat and add Faith No More's "Epic" and Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole," too.)

I was going to post the #1 songs of 1990 as I did in the other threads, but it was a rather long, uninspiring list to me. I'll try again tomorrow.

Seeing Rocketboy's list brings back memories.

Lots of good stuff, but just like any other era there's songs that were overplayed, worn out, and I got really tired of real quick. That's the thing with hits.

(If you're going to count it, might as well cheat and add Faith No More's "Epic" and Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole," too.)I compiled that list a while ago based on hit lists from each year in the 90's so I guess Free Fallin' must have still been a hit in early 1990.
I also figured there were a handful that slipped through the cracks.

And I've never cared for Epic. There are also bands that I still don't care for that aren't on the list (notice the lack of Metallica and most U2, among others). At the time I hated many of the songs on that list because they were so overplayed, but with the passage of time I've come to appreciate them.

It's good they patched things up. One of the great bands of all time.I've said this before and I'm sure I'll say it again...STP is hands down the best live band I have ever seen. I've seen people go into a show not caring for them and come out as fans.

I've seen them three times over 12 years (97, 00, 09), and if I were to make a list of the best concerts I've ever seen, those would be my top three.
Despite their problems in the past they've never lost a step.
I just wish they'd get the recognition they deserve.

I thought STP's first three albums were great, but didn't like the last two as much. Tiny Music... is my favorite.

Here are the #1 songs of 1990 (blue=I own):

"How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" - Michael Bolton (3 weeks)
"Opposites Attract" - Paula Abdul (3 weeks)
"Escapade" - Janet Jackson (3 weeks)
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles (2 weeks)
"Love Will Lead You Back" - Taylor Dayne (1 week)
"I'll Be Your Everything" - Tommy Page (1 week)
"Nothing Compares 2 U" - Sinead O'Connor (4 weeks)
"Vogue" - Madonna (3 weeks)
"Hold On" - Wilson Phillips (1 week)
"It Must Have Been Love" - Roxette (2 weeks)
"Step By Step" - New Kids on the Block (3 weeks)
"She Ain't Worth It" - Glenn Medeiros Feat. Bobby Brown (2 weeks)
"Vision of Love" - Mariah Carey (4 weeks)
"If Wishes Came True" - Sweet Sensation (1 week)
"Blaze Of Glory" - Jon Bon Jovi (1 week)
"Release Me" - Wilson Phillips" (2 weeks)
"(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection" - Nelson (1 week)
"Close To You" - Maxi Priest (1 week)
"Praying For Time" - George Michael (1 week)
"I Don't Have The Heart" - James Ingram (1 week)
"Black Cat" - Janet Jackson (1 week)
"Ice Ice Baby" - Vanilla Ice (1 week)
"Love Takes Time" - Mariah Carey (3 weeks)
"I'm Your Baby Tonight" - Whitney Houston (1 week)
"Because I Love You (The Postman Song)" - Stevie B (4 week)

So, out of all those, I only own one mp3. Kind of sad that of the rest, "Ice Ice Baby" would probably be my first choice. I'm not even sure if I've heard a lot of these songs.

Some songs from 1990 that I have purchased from iTunes:

"Groove Is In The Heart" - Dee-Lite
"The Humpty Dance" - Digital Underground
"Cuts You Up" - Peter Murphy
"Suddenly Mary" - The Posies

My college roommate really like the Smithereens. They had a hit that year with "A Girl Like You". I don't have that one, but do have "Blood & Roses" from their 1986 debut album. That is a different decade, though.

A few CD's from 1990 that I have:

Alice in Chains - Facelift
Fugazi - Repeater, also 13 Songs, which combined their first two EP's
Pixies - Bossanova
Sonic Youth - Goo
The Sundays - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
10,000 Maniacs - Hope Chest: The Fredonia Recordings 1982-1983 - technically not 80's music, since this was a compilation of their first two releases, which were rare independent releases.

The local station at that time had become more of a top 40 station, so I rarely listened to it. I was in college and maybe I wasn't listening to as much radio. I was probably discovering older music. I was upgrading my taped copies of Talking Heads albums to CD's, I finally heard the first Devo album and bought that, and I was getting into the 10,000 Maniacs, with that Hope Chest being my first purchase of their music. It was probably sometime in 1990 that I heard a profile of Fugazi on a late night CBC radio programs called Brave New Waves. It covered some of the bands that led up to Fugazi, including Minor Threat. It was still another year or two before I finally got into them fully and bought their CD's.

Not really a Bon Jovi fan. I'm kinda backwards compared to the critics on 10,000 Maniacs and The Sundays. In My Tribe got lots of praise, but that was my least favorite Maniacs album, at least of the ones with Natalie Merchant. I only have one post-Merchant one and have only listened to it once or twice. I really like Hope Chest, though there are a couple songs on it that I don't like quite so much.

With The Sundays, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic gets the best reviews, with Blind and Static & Silence getting progressively worse reviews (not necessarily bad ones, just not as stellar). I have the opposite opinion, as I felt each album got better.

The post-Merchant stuff is absolutely unlistenable. I liked one song ("More Than This"), and it destroyed what little respect I had for them when I learned it was a cover. The rest really is so awful I can't listen to any of it, and I'm not speaking in hyperbole.

Funny, because I always thought Merchant was the giant ego that overshadowed everyone else in the group. My wife's a big fan of both 10K Maniacs and Innocence Mission; I much prefer Innocence Mission.

I've been meaning to at least get "Bright As Yellow." I don't know much about the dynamics of the 10,000 Maniacs, but I know that one of the original members returned when Merchant left. Sad that guitarist Robert Buck passed away in 2000. Hard to believe it has been that long already.
