Swatter, that looks fantastic! I wish I had painting skills like that, my vintage cloud car looks so bland... now even more so when I see what you did with yours.

Oh, and here's my Boba Fett Swoop (aka world's cheapest custom ;)):

This is my Assault Cruiser. I wanted to blend the design of the Rebel Transport along with the look of the Battleship seen near the beginning of the Fifth Element. It's made from assorted plastic parts and pieces including 2 waste baskets and travel toothbrush holders. The ship measures 22 inches long by 10 inches wide and features an opening cockpit and a rotating R3 head.

I want to paint some of the red jedistarfighters into the current repaint of aqua....but I need to find some better paint brands from the hobby store (cause testors are too watery) and what is a good suggestion for converting dark red to a light aqua color...

plus how do I get to the aqua color to paint it...(3 parts white to 2 parts mint green?)

or keep painting until it is covered or just remove the paint and start fresh?

Thanks

VDCYou could spray the ship with some coats of primmer and them I'm sure you could find the color at a shop. To tell you the truth it would be cheaper to just go buy the new ship.

Cause....kbtoys.com has a sale the jedistarfighter for $9.99 each (but on 10/26 there will be a 20% off sale) and I don't want a repaint for $20 since I would rather army build for the money.

two jedi ships for $15.98 and paint for $1.50 and $2.00 for primer it is totally worth it to me.

My first attempt at building a custom (from scratch)... its my take on the Forward Command Center of the Army of the Republic, battle of Genosis. (I know, I know, the original is round, and mine is square... but's its easier to build a box). Completely scratchbuilt with ABS plastic, some recycled from old computer case parts. The base swivels (an old PC monitor base), and the control panels light up (battery pack). I didn't take a photo with a SW action figure for scale, but it will contain at least two figures sitting in the chairs and three figures standing.

P.S. having problems uploading the pix, the files are too large. I will have to put them up on a webpage and post the link.

I am currently considering two concept vehicles.

The first on is the Clone Wars V-19 Fighter (by Kit Bashing the T-16 Skyhopper and a A-Wing).

The second one is to make the mini troop shuttle seen taking off in ANH behind the sand Troopers....

Do you have any photo editing software like Photoshop that can compress the size of your pics? Or you could add it to the Photo gallery section and just post the link to it.

I had tried using Photoshop to compress, but the image files were at 500K and would not squeeze down much below 400k in size. I'm sure it was operator error... :)

An ambitious project, the imperial troop shuttle/landing craft... there are very little reference photos available. You can find it in the starwars.com databank under "Imperial Landing Craft". Someone built a custom like that on FFURG and they posted the recipe, maybe it will help:
http://www.ffurg.com/custom_recipe/ships/incom_tp1104.htm

I have seen some Imperial Shuttle Tiderions available for parts on Ebay lately. That is a project I wouldn't mind tackling myself.

In Photoshop, go to Image (top menu), then Image Size to open up the box. At the top of that it shows Pixel Dimensions. Either reduce the Width or Height or the Resolution and watch the Pixel Dimensions number change. When it gets below 500kb, you should be okay. Then go to FILE, then Save As. Pick JPEG. It will pop up a box with JPEG Options. The very bottom has a gauge to show you how long it would take people with various connections to download your photo at the current size. Go to the slider bar near the top and pick something in the middle. The QUALITY value will change. Usually something in the neighborhood of 6 (Medium) will be good enough for uploads to SSG. If the SSG board tells you that the image is still too big, just go back and SAVE AS a JPEG again and move the slider down some more. Click OK.

Its some really nice work. I particularly like the attention to detail, and the ship's cockpit. The builders are Skull Customs, here is their website:
http://www.skullcustoms.cl/Galeria/Galeria.asp

Inspiring, isn't it? I want to build one...
I wonder if they would consider building some molds and making a kit out of it. Cast resin, perhaps. Just for the heck of it, I emailed them and asked.

Nope, it's a concept vehicle. I always thought that the Imperial Troop Transport from the Vintage line was cool looking, but it just wasn't what I considered reliable for transporting my hostag... guests around in.

I've seen some of the scratch-built vehicles around the internet, and I'm inspired. I hope my pics inspire someone else to create something great.

Wow, that's pretty swank, especially on such a limited item as that big vac-formed display piece. The engine photographs very nicely, but I think the most impressed I was in those was the screens over the engines, that was a keen touch. With how hollow this piece is, and how unlikely replacement segments are likely to be due to its limited nature, has customizing this been difficult beyond the norm?

Art504
12-11-2012, 05:41 PM
Thanks :) Being that the original lights and power cord still work, it was really only the back engine that needed the work. I've been thinking about how to do it for a while, picking up battery powered LEDs from Big Lots (of all places). The space insde the engine was big enough for almost anything. I painted a final grill that still needs to be installed. As for replacement parts? Impossible. I am replacing the top and bottom cannons with POTF toys, which will actually be the hardest part. I am having to cut a hole in the bottom cannon station to get it to work, but which also allows and arm to go in and really make some changes if wanted. And thanks for noticing the grills on the back. Solution? $2.97 screen window replacement pieces from Lowe's. It even had adhesive already attached.

You wouldn't believe me if I didn't have the pictures... In 2001, I had the single cannon signed by Jeremy Bullock, Boba Fett, in NYC. I had the cannons replaced by scale versions found through the scaled toys, but I kept the cannon obviously.

Well, I met Peter Mayhew last night. Yes, Chewbacca. He signed the radar dish on the outside as requested. "Peter Mayhew Chewbacca" So, a TRU, 6 foot display, original lighting plus engine lights, custom painted to match the movie, a cannon signed by Boba Fett and the radar signed by Chewbacca. Fun :)

Wow, very wild! Was it difficult for Mayhew to sign something so relatively small and curved? That autograph reminds me of my own messy scrawl. ;) So cool that you got a photo of him signing it, hopefully you get to add even more SW names and this already amazing ship will become even more spectacular.

Thanks :) I had the chance for Anthony Daniels, but I f'ed that up by forgetting the TRU MF part at home... The one I would want would be Ford, but no chance of that. And, yep, his hands are huge. I'm 6'1" and his hands are twice the size of mine. He did his best and surprised me by holding it sideways and described that it looked like to him at that angle. One of the peeps there to take pics took two pics, which I appreciated. He said he had to get a shot of Chewy holding the radar dish like that.

JediTricks
01-28-2013, 09:01 PM
Awesome! Too bad about Anthony Daniels, I think any actor who was filmed on the Falcon should sign this piece. Also Boba Fett. ;) I hear ya on Harrison Ford, the guy is an autograph recluse, and also a regular recluse.

Hello all,
Well I finished a custom Sailbarge - my 3rd generation, that I would like comments on, especially ideas on what you'd like to see on a 4th gen barge. PICs and the full story can be found at: http://futureofstarwars.wordpress.com/tag/jabbas-sail-barge/

JediTricks
09-29-2014, 01:07 PM
Looks very nice, although those photos aren't doing it justice. (Also, that page misspells "peek" as "peak" as in peak of a mountain, but that's not really here or there.)

Overall, it looks very pleasing. I'd suggest for the next version, a larger access panel to better move figures inside, and a photo of how Jabba and an alien figure look in that throne room section. The middle of the deck should have the access panels raised higher, on the movie set it was a whole box almost Artoo's height that was just ahead of the cannon.

Some nitpicks: I notice the window covers on the barge rear section are uneven. Also, the last curve on the railing leading to the top section dips down to the floor where the real one doesn't dip down as far. The lines holding the sail down are black where in the film they were tan, and the one leading from the rear of the back sail down to the rear of the ship is missing. The panel on the nose is black and separated from the rest of the nose panel, while on the real one it's the same color and flows into it.

stylesbas
09-29-2014, 01:51 PM
Thank you for the comments. The next barge already has a larger access panel. Rather than the 2 small ones on the left side, I've combined them into a large one that allows for full viewing of the cantina. I've also changed the sensor panel on the front to be the same color and be better integrated into the hull. I will incorporate in the PICs some other figures in Jabba's suite to show its size. The 4th Gen Barge I will change the location, size and design of the deck access door to be more like the actual Barge

As for the railing, since my creations are made of cardboard and foam core I had to make some compromises on the railing for strength and durability. When I had the railing not come to the floor the railings were breaking, especially in shipping. Sturdiness during shipping and playability sometimes require tradeoffs as I am sure you realize from the Kenner/Hasbro vehicles.

The strings are a different story. If you look closely at the actually movie set in Buttercup Valley the lines on the sides of the sails, while they are tan, they are not lines but are poles. Because of their small size, this would be impractical on this model as they would easily break. I can use tan lines. Did that once before but the black lines, while not tan like the actual Barge, actually looked better. Also, the actual Barge shows no string on the rear of the sail.

Some other additions I plan on making for a 4th Gen are a larger cantina with a bar, lights, and a spring loaded base to launch Boba Fett off the Barge. My email is stylesbas.creations@gmail.com. Send me a note and I will send you future PICs and PICs of other creations I've made.

Again, Thanks for your comments. I don't look at anything as nitpicking but as viable assessments. Whether they can be incorporated into the vehicle is often dictated by necessity. If you have time, take a look at the ebay auction that is referred to on the furureofstarwars site.

Thanks
David

You're welcome, that's good to hear you have started on thenext one and it's got those elements in it.

I see your point on the railing. Were I receiving it, I think I'd be more accepting if the top of the railing continued its shape, and a new spar led down to strengthen the railing, but if that's not plausible with your materials, then by all means it's a reasonable compromise - and yeah, I know how Hasbro cheats sometimes when reality won't let them be accurate.

Interesting point on the poles, I hadn't noticed. I guess I was thinking of the rigging line that leads from those poles, the one that Luke and Leia swing down on, it's also tan so I thought it was the same. For me, that Luke & Leia swing line would be a very important part of a Sail Barge vehicle.

As for the rear line, it has a flag in the middle, you can see it here:
http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091202162508/starwars/images/d/d4/Sailbarge-chron2.jpg
and it's represented in this drawing here:
http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130720015436/starwars/images/2/2a/SailBargeCutaway-SWFB.jpg

Lights? That would be quite cool, that would take it to the next level. The spring-loaded base is a fun idea, I think Galoob did that with a Micro Machines playset up front where the upper deck really didn't have much going on.

I tried to view the auction earlier but the link didn't work at the time, it does now and the pics there are much better. The interior details are a lot clearer there, and I had a question about what you used the space over Jabba's throne, the one that in the cut-away drawings was a private chamber. I've seen other custom sail barges, and the biggest challenge is the space over Jabba's head since he's already raised up, it looks like you used that space for more height over Jabba, which would be very cool if so.

Hi,
The space above Jaba's Throne is just open. There was not enough room to include the upper floor above him. You bring up a very good point. I'm going to try to engineer the 4th Gen barge so jabba's floor is lower so there'll be space to add that upper room/crawl space. What I'll try to do is lower the engines which jabba's floor rests on now. I have about 1/2" to play with...not sure that will give me enough room without having to make the Barge bigger overall. While some people would love a large Barge, most of my customers want one that's in the 3' to 3' 6" range. Anything bigger and t wont fit on their shelves. The current barge is exactly 42" long which is 2" longer than the 2nd Gen one. That 2" went to a longer nose to give it a more realistic profile while not changing the basic design of the Barge itself. I'm just kinda ranmblin here but it gives some insight into what goes into the design process. I built someone a Wlone Wars Acclamator and cutaway of the death star a while back. Turned out fantastic but they had tradeoffs. He didn't want them any bigger than an average kitchen table. they really turned out well. The bay doors were big enough to drive a clone tank out of (I custom built him a platoon of them) and the death star landing bay could fit the original Kenner Falcon. Give me your email in a PM and I will send you PICs.
