Welcome to the Third Annual (2010) SirStevesGuide Academy Awards Movie Challenge!!!

All members are encouraged to participate!!!

This challenge will begin February 7th @ 12:00am and will end March 7th @ 11:59 pm.

Here is a link to the first (2008) challenge (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=37064&highlight=challenge).
Here is a link to last year's (2009) challenge. (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=39726)

The rules are simple:

Watch any movie or short that was nominated or won an Academy Award between the designated time frame (Feb. 7th - March 7th) and post your results here; with each entry listed in numerical order, including the day watched and the movie's title. This is the basic format, please see the example below. Feel free to add your own comments about each movie watched, the year it was released, the nominations/wins it received, and other miscellaneous information, if you so desire.

The qualifications are very straight forward; that the movie or short was (or is) nominated for or won an Academy Award (in any category).

Example List:
_______________________________________________

February 7th
1. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Won: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Writing
Nominated: Best Film Editing, Best Sound
2. Alien (1979)
Won: Best Effects (Visual)
Nominated: Best Art Direction-Set Decoration

February 8th
3. Aliens (1986)
Won: Best Effects (Sound), Best Effects (Visual)
Nominated: Best Actress, Best Editing, Best Music (Original Score), Best Sound, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration

_______________________________________________

That pretty much sums it up. Most of you should be familiar with these challenges by now, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Again, the challenge will start on Feb. 7th (@ 12:00am) and will run through March 7th. Any movie started before 11:59 pm on March 7th, but ends thereafter, will count!

Have fun!!!

I sucked it up last year, watching a piddly 12 titles, but vow to do much better this year! I actually have a week off of work in Feb. so I plan to watch a bunch of movies then.

I am really looking forward to this one, and I hope you all are too!

I have a furlough week in Feb. so maybe I can knock out a few more this year.

Sweet! I'm sure I can knock out more than I did last year, but I know the Olympics will affect my total.

The Olympics would probably inspire to watch MORE movies...instead of watching The Olympics. :D

j/k, enjoy sir ! :)

Just to remind everyone, the challenge has now begun. I haven't watched anything yet, because of the Super Bowl and what not, but I'll start tomorrow! Can't wait! Thinking of starting off with a LOTR Marathon... :D

01) China's Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province (2009)
Won: TBD
Nominated: Documentary Short
I watched this on HBO On Demand and it was very sad/interesting...sad from the loss of life (many children) and interesting to see the political implications of questioning government.
02) Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Won: none
Nominated: Adapted Screenplay
"Sir, does this mean that Ann-Margaret's not coming?"

Awesome movie, yet also depressing toward the end. Watching it again, I now realize the girlfriend of Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio was also in Up in the Air, for which she was nominated this year.

Nominated: Actor (Jeff Bridges), Supporting Actress (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Song

Awesome flick, just awesome, I loved everything about it.
I really believe The Dude deserves to win Best Actor next month. I'll be surprised if he doesn't. Regardless, it was an excellent film.

05) The Lovely Bones (2009)
Won: TBD
Nominated: Supporting Actor (Stanley Tucci)
I'm sure he won't win because this is Christoph Waltz's year for Basterds, but Tucci was creep-ily good in this. And the movie overall is very good...I thought it was very well done. I didn't know too much what to expect so I was surprised by the realistic scenes and how well they turned out. As for the fantasy scenes, that was good, too.

Another participant, nice!

I haven't watched anything the past few days, been pretty busy. I'll get back into the swing of things shortly though.

I really want to see this one. I hear Bridges gives his best performance since Lebowski. And how The Big Lebowski was snubbed, I'll never know - hands down one of the best films out there.

Bridges is way past due for a win though. If he doesn't get it, which I hope he does, even though I haven't seen the movie yet, I hope Jeremy Renner gets it. He did an awesome job in The Hurt Locker (which was phenomenal btw - I watched it a few days before the challenge began). The Hurt Locker definitely comes highly recommended!

Crazy Heart was definitely worth a theatrical run, I know you'll wait for the DVD which is fine. And for the record I'm not even a Country fan, but this was just phenomenal.

Hurt Locker - I've not seen it yet but I have it on my pile, will definitely be watching it soon.

I watched the Theatrical DVD today for the first time, so it's been several years since I last saw this on VHS...since I was pretty happy with the updated 2004 DVD release.

But in honor of the upcoming 30th anniversary of ESB, I watched this original version and thought it was great. A number of the effects look rough and were definitely needing the digital upgrade but overall I think it holds up VERY well after 3 decades...some of those shots look like they were filmed in the last few years, so it's held up very well.

I gave it a whirl since I haven't seen it in a long time...and it's still very mediocre. I'm not much of a Tobey Maguire fan and that Green Goblin costume was awful. Very jarring to try and take that character seriously.
Some of the effects are very good and some others are already looking a bit dated.
On the bright side, though, Willem Dafoe and JK Simmons are fantastic.

When I looked up the list of categories this was nominated in, I was surprised it had 10 nominations but 0 wins...then I remembered the talk about it getting shut out 7 years ago. I remember watching that Oscars pretty vividly, especially Adrian Brody's gross kiss on Halle Berry and Harrison Ford calling the rapist Roman Polanski's name for winning Best Director.

I like Gangs of New York but it's not something I can watch often...Daniel Day-Lewis is great though, and it makes me want to watch There Will Be Blood next !

But is it possible to out-suck Eminem unless your last name is Cyrus or Jonas? I think not.

02-19-2010, 01:16 PM
In that year, no.
I'll take "Lose Yourself" over "The Hands that Built America" any day.
Em's song was inspired and above par for a lot of his other stuff. U2's was dull, lazy, and unimaginative compared to what they're otherwise capable of.

How this didn't win for Writing, I'll never know; as it is simply brilliant! The Cinematography ain't bad either. This is one that gets better and better with each additional viewing... love it!

Nominated: Actor (DeNiro), Supporting Actress (Jodie Foster), Score, Picture

Kind of embarrassing to say this since it's renown as such a classic...but I don't remember ever seeing this movie in its entirety. Sure, I'm familiar with the famous pop culture references ("you talkin' to me?", Jodie Foster as a child prostitute, John Hinkly trying to 'impress' Foster with the Reagan attack) but not much more than that.

After seeing Shutter Island yesterday (decent flick), I decided to continue my Scorcese kick with Taxi Driver. Good stuff, pretty crusty, very good overall. A definite slow burner for 90 minutes followed by an explosive 20 minute run.

I'm trying to watch The Hurt Locker before it wins some awards on Sunday, so we'll see...it would be nice to watch one more flick to get it to 15 this year.

Meh. Watched just one more movie than I did last year... very disappointing. The Olympics really did put a damper on the # of movies I was able to watch, as expected.

April is just around the corner, so I will do better in the Comedy Challenge... I gots to!

Hopefully there will be more than 2 participants too.
