View Full Version : Would You Buy The Hoth Echo Base Ice Laser Drill?

I am continuing my 3 3/4" vehicle thread series.
This will discuss ONLY the vehicle in the title of the thread (in this case The Hoth Echo Base Ice Laser Drill from ESB).
I will cover several unmade vehicles for the action figures per week, choosing them from a rotating schedule through the movies and the Expanded Universe.
I'll order it TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, EU, and then keep going back through the order in that manner.
So here I'm only asking you if you'd buy The Hoth Echo Base Ice Laser Drill?
This vehicle is only noticed on the edge of the first scene I'm displaying a picture of below. I never noticed it in 30 years but JediTricks pointed it out to me when I was looking for the Hoth Echo Base Personnel Carrier.
This drill was never used by Luke Skywalker in a cut scene that I'm aware of - I think the picture on the right (below) was made for a publicity shot.
It could go in a battle pack with perhaps a pilot like Wedge or Hobbie in Hoth Pilot gear and an astromech or Hoth Gonk Droid.
I don't think this vehicle would be deployed as a weapon at all, but is rather more like a construction tool.
Do you want this made?
How do you think it would sell if produced, at each price point ($15 or $24)?

Tycho, I'm not seeing any of the pics you mentioned....

Seems like your running out of ship options.:silly:
The only way I would pick this up is if it was a pack-in with something. Snowspeeder, battle pack, etc. I woud not buy this if it was sold seperately. So I guess the answer is no. I don't think suggesting they put it in a battle pack is a good way to determine if a vehicle is wanted. If the figures with it sucks, then it will sit on the shelf.

I'd buy it. But I like transports/accessories because of their utility.
I don't see the pic either. Must be the dillusions of grandeur again.

I like this thing, so yes, I want it. If Hasbro expands the figure and vehicle line beyond just Clone Wars and the one TRU Legacy exclusive, then I think this would be a good fit for that line with a Luke figure without the head wrap.

Wow, we really are scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I don't recall ever seeing this thing. I need to see some photos, but I'm pretty sure that my vote will be no.

If it's what I'm thinking of, I always thought it was a cannon, not a drill, but I'd buy it anyway, if it were $20 or less.
Is this (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/3/3b/Luke_gunner_01.jpg) what you're talking about?

Chux, that is the gun attached to it, but it's part of a larger vehicle, the Laser Ice Cutter is its actual name: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Laser_ice-cutter
It's the vehicle far left in this pic: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/File:EchoBaseHangar.jpg
Here's another angle I've never seen before: http://nl.starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bestand:Laser_Ice-Cutter.jpg
My vote would be a yes, although in real life it'd be totally conditional. I could see buying it as a deluxe figure & vehicle thing, or part of a battle pack, but at $20 on its own, probably not unless it came with the Echo Base Rebel Troop Carrier as well (which wouldn't be a hot seller, but it would be a nifty set for us fans).
You know, I wonder why Kenner never made a vintage toy of this. They were getting into mini rigs and weird stuff that was barely noticeable in the films at the time, this seems like it'd be right up their alley.

Wow, I never realized there was more to it! Thanks, JT. I would definitely buy this bad boy.
I would definitely buy this. Anything to fill up my favourite Star Wars set/location Echo Base.

Sure, I'll buy it. I think it would be best in some sort of super deluxe pack with a new probot, a taun-taun, a couple rebels and maybe a wampa all for the bargain price of $72 (which target will quickly clearance to $40 in about 3 days despite it being a toys r us exclusive.)

This actually would be a cool Battlepack with Luke, an ESB 2-1B based on the ROTS 2-1B (with a new arm), and a dead Tauntaun.

and Hasbro could cross market it. paint it with stripes or spots and make it a mini Tiger Force tank for Joes.
while i'd buy it if reasonably priced, i don't need it.

The pics are now up in my original post.
Sorry about that. I went to bed at 9:30pm last night, exhausted. I woke up at 1am and stared at the ceiling until 3am I think. Then I watched WWII movies until my coffee shop was open for breakfast. I paid some bills and felt dizzy from being tired, so I posted today's poll and finally went to bed at like around noon and slept until around 4pm  After my surgery, and with no day-job as of yet, I saw no need to force myself to stay awake, overtired. One stays healthier with adequate rest. I just don't get mine during normal hours since that writers' conference. Adjusting slowly...
Meanwhile, thank you JediTricks for saving this thread with your links to the pictures. I meant to post them this morning, but with lack of rest comes shoddy work and I certainly proved that. Hopefully tonight I'll lie down by midnight and sleep some normal hours for once. However, I'm not the least bit tired at the moment. It's 6:42 pm PST.
Darth Metalmute, ESB is indeed scraping the bottom of the barrel. We've discussed most of their vehicles, or new re-makes are out on the market, but we're going to have to cover everything and then eventually drop ESB from polling.
1. probe droid with pod
2. star destroyer
3. snowspeeder
4. bigger AT-AT (seems pointless to poll for it now)
5. new AT-ST Hoth re-deco
6. Dagobah X-wing (re-release?)
7. bigger TIE Bomber (future discussion poll)
8. bigger Slave-One (future discussion poll)
9. Twin Pod Cloud Car (pointless at this point)
10. Nebulon-B Medical Frigate (future poll)
11. Rebel Transport
There really wasn't much ESB specific. I might poll for the Executer last - oh yeah - everyone here is just waiting to add a 15 foot long toy to their spacious living accomodations (you don't need a bed, do you?)
So I'll take polling suggestions.
Oh - we can rework the BMF to have only ESB voice recordings - adding Leia and Lando might be fun. It could also include Mynocks.
But in any case, the other movies are richer with more vehicle possibilities. For whatever strange reason, ESB concentrated on story telling and acting. Crazy thing to put those elements into a movie, but they didn't have CGI in those days.

As a deluxe vehicle, I'd buy it. It'd be a nice addition to the Hoth hangar.

Hmm. I don't think so. I just don't think I'd want this.

i'd buy it if in a battlepack but not on it's own....doesn't have enough play value or for that matter even screen time to warrant dropping the $$ on.

It would have to come with a pack in. Then, I would say YES.

The Hoth Echo Base Laser Ice Drill won. 10-4.
So here's a small one for Hasbro to make.
The new ESB vehicle poll will be in the new vintage forum.
