View Full Version : Would You Buy The Rebel Medical Frigate From ESB?

I am continuing my 3 3/4" vehicle thread series.

This will discuss ONLY the vehicle in the title of the thread (in this The Rebel Medical Frigate From ESB?).

I will cover several unmade vehicles for the action figures per week, choosing them from a rotating schedule through the movies and the Expanded Universe.

I'll order it TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, EU, and then keep going back through the order in that manner.

So here I'm only asking you if you'd buy The Rebel Medical Frigate From ESB?

This is one of the craziest offerings Hasbro could ever make for a capital ship. It's probably a very bad idea but I need to poll for it, and try to determine how I'd design it to be as cool as possible.

I started by figuring out what's essential for this ship:

1) It will need clear-stands to support itself. That's the only way. The 12" Collection's Target Exclusive Speederbike was made this way. It can be done. The "whoosh factor" (of a "flyable" ship) is completely lost on the Nebulon-B frigate design - but in defense of that - probably no one "flies" their BMF either. Yes it's more of a playset - but this poll is about vehicles that will at least look like the actual ship from their exterior.

There are 3 key scenes on the Nebulon-B Medical Frigate in the movie and the ship needs to fulfill these (reasons 2 and 3 and 4 follow).

2) In the back of the ship, it's entirety must open (via a side pannel) for at least one big room. Add the POTJ Deluxe Bacta Tank set and a hospital bed for 2-1B to play doctor at, and have the closing pannel feature the big window that Luke and Leia are standing at. Now you can operate on Luke's hand. Also the Nebulon-Bs were widely used by the Empire. Maybe for alternate play you can add the "Build Darth Vader" Deluxe Set to do repairs after big battles like in The Force Unleashed.

3) a boarding tunnel needs to connect to the Millennium Falcon. Unfortunately, I don't see this as being feasible. Certainly not with the BMF which was not designed for it. A retooling and re-release of the 1979 KENNER Falcon mold could include a docking module that replaces the gunner station for just such a use. Sure you could do that with the BMF, but making the Nebulon-B big enough is never going to happen, in my opinion. You might just get away with this with a 6 foot long Medical Frigate stood on clear stands, over the 1979 Falcon.

4) Firing missiles. Every kid loves bright red plastic. In ROTJ, the Nebulon-B was shown defending itself as it broadsides with a star destroyer. Some rotating "Rebel guns" like the blockade runner has could be scaled down and added to the ship.

Probably last on my list, but essential - though not shown in the movie - every ship needs a bridge. A small removeable pannel area in the front could reveal seats for 3 - Tantive IV cockpit style. Rebel troopers and some one made in Madine's style could command this ship.

If you want this vehicle made as well, I think you should describe how you envision it.

So do you want The Rebel Medical Frigate From ESB made?

How do you think it would sell if produced?

What do you think it would cost?

Are you going to buy it / make a space in your collection for it?

Noooooooo.

I'd like to say yes, but there's no way.

Oh what fun, a giant ship that does nothing in the movies except allow our heroes to stand around brooding about their defeats. Like an ant, it's also designed to be impossible to exist at this or any larger scale. That should make a great purchase.

That, for the cheap seats, was a "no".

It would have to be able to hold 4 X-wings and a B-Wing. It should have a loading dock that can connect to the BMF.
In other words, no.

It would probably have to be at least $100 to be made exciting, and most likely wouldn't work. However, if Hasbro got a wild hair and made it, I'd like the sides of the front hull to lower down. There could be several levels to put figures on the ship itself, and then the lowered panels would sit on the floor and have an Endor terrain. The rear hull could have a Rebel war room, even though it wasn't used as such during ROTJ, and pop-out cannons.

Realistically, though, I don't think it would do well, and oddly I doubt I'd buy it unless it looked like a great replica when all sealed up. But! If they wanted to bring Collector Fleet back, it would be the first Rebel ship I would demand.

...still need to get ahold of the Titanium version...

I know I'm never going to hear the end of this but YES !!! this is one of my favorite capital ships from the OTC and would love to have one for my very own.

I currently have the micro machine version as well as the WOTC version from Starship Battles.

I would buy it, and here's why...

The Medical Frigate is a cool "Mothership" where characters can have meetings, receive medical care, etc...She has that interesting long design that could accommodate smaller ships of various sizes to "dock" without actually having to be physically large enough to feature a cargo hold to fit the Falcon.

I envision a greatly scaled down playset, with a small bridge, a medical bay (with bay window), and a small breifing/meetng room in the rear engine section.

As you can see in my picture, I would cut the bottom 1/2 off of the ship, for ease of display/play...

These are toys for kids and adults to play with, right?

That's a very cool photoshop FV, but still looks like a super lousy toy to me. It's got nothing really going on even in the photoshop job you have there. You did a good job scaling the movie scene characters against the Falcon and figures on the ground, but there's only room in the front for about 5 more figures in the front half there. The center is a very thin tube. The rear is a box. And it's STILL dwarfing the Falcon which was a $60 pricepoint on its last run, which would make this Nebulon-B Frigate toy at least $250. For a ship that was in the movies only briefly and passively.

I'm loving Valentino's picture.

His image gave me the idea of having 2 removeable panels for the front of the ship - both the scenes in the medical bay (with Luke and Leia and the droids as FV shows) and the bridge.

That opens up new possibilities for play features in the rear of the ship.

Yes, JT: the ship might very well be $250.

I paid $119 for SideShow Jabba the Hutt and about $199 for his throne environment from SSC, as well as $40 each for Salacious and Bubo battlepacks respectively (from SSC) for about $400 altogether for my SideShow Jabba diorama, not including other figures that belong in the scene like Bib Fortuna.

So would I spend up to $400 for something cool for Star Wars? Already have.

If you own the BMF ($150) and TurboTank ($100) and AT-TE ($100) and a Corporate Alliance Tank Droid and a V-wing - you've spent $390 right there. Perhaps you got stuff on sale? Perhaps you could get a Rebel Medical Frigate ($250) on sale?

Price might not be the question. Display space? Well, I guess the thing in FV picture would be about 6 feet long? When they make the first captial ship that's 6 feet long - many of us will try to jump on buying it. This might prove less tempting as a collection rolls forward: Imperial Star Destroyer....Acclamator Class Star Destroyer....Republic Star Destroyer...Expanded Universe New Republic Star Destroyer (repaint)...etc. However, you can remove your home furniture before you say "absolutely no! Not another one!" ;)

I would. :D

I really want:

the blockade runner (as much as I love my custom)
an Imperial Star Destroyer
a Republic Star Destroyer
The Invisible Hand
The Trade Federation Droid Control Ship

and would only be buying:

a Mon Calamari Star Cruiser
the Rebel Medical Frigate

if they were the first produced in a line like this.

Note everything listed is AFTER I have Jabba The Hutt's Sailbarge. Big as it may be - it's not for a CAPITAL ship collection and needs to be made right away!

No, it does nothing in the films, and it would be a boring toy and a weird-looking collectible.

So would I spend up to $400 for something cool for Star Wars? Already have.Except this isn't remotely cool.

If you own the BMF ($150) and TurboTank ($100) and AT-TE ($100) and a Corporate Alliance Tank Droid and a V-wing - you've spent $390 right there. Perhaps you got stuff on sale? Perhaps you could get a Rebel Medical Frigate ($250) on sale?Oh boy, 5 exciting, aggressive vehicles, vs. Aww, 1 boring do-nothing hollow shell of a medical frigate.

And keep in mind, that $250 estimate I made was against the OLD Millennium Falcon, not the new one. The new one to fit under this really would be around $400 and that's under the assumption that it gets a full product run rather than the heavily truncated run required for something with such limited appeal. A limited run (say, 1,000 or so) would probably triple the price and STILL might not cover the costs of cutting that much steel on tooling.

Honestly, these polls seem like a waste of time with ideas like this. There's ZERO chance this will happen. In all the multiverse, there are NO alternate dimensions or timelines where anybody would make this product. There would never be a chance that enough people would get excited enough to warrant a company making this product.

I don't know man, that kid looks like he's having fun!

I also feel that not every toy has to have tons of firing missiles and electronic lazer guns. Part of play is taking your figures and acting out a storyline. So I love the idea of the Medical Frigate, the Republic Star Destroyer, and the Tantive IV, because it's a place where lots of figures can gather around briefing room tables, plan battles, fix R2-D2, and recover from lightsaber wounds.

JediTricks
04-30-2010, 07:16 PM
That's fine for, say, a $20 toy, but $250 to $1200??? And the Medical Frigate isn't a vessel folks gathered around briefing rooms in, nor would the suggested design actually have room for a lot of space for that. Not everything can be the USS FLAGG.

Fat Valentino
04-30-2010, 07:25 PM
Not everything can be the USS FLAGG.

You're right. And the old Kenner line had nothing that even came close. It's a pretty good time for BIG vehicle collectors! That said, I bet that Hasbro's planning a Clone Wars Republic Star Destroyer. Notice how many interesting, Classic trilogy inspired interior play spaces we saw featured in last week's Boba Fett episode? I'd bet the farm that there's one announced by this time next year, and I bet there'll be retro gunner stations...

I really doubt they'd do anything bigger than the BMF at this point. I'm thinking AT-AT will be the next AT-TE, and Slave I will be around the size of baby's first riding toy, I mean, Turbo Tank.

To Prioritize big vehicles:

Republic Star Destroyer (because of the Clone Wars tie-in)

Jabba's Sailbarge (because ROTJ is due, and collector demand. Plus CW can include it and the size makes it really feasible in light of the Black Pearl.)

Rebel Blockade Runner (because of tradition and collector demand. Plus CW can include it - and the size makes it more feasible.)

The Imperial Star Destroyer

Now I've simply polled all the OT large vehicles to be complete (except The Executor). The Mon Calamari Star Cruiser was the most unlikely one due to size and interest.

I don't plan on polling the Executor because the Imperial Star Destroyer lost its poll (barely) but the Gungan Sub split the vote 50-50 and I didn't count that as "a win." There's only 14 of us regularly participating in these discussions and sometimes up to 20-something (Jabba's sailbarge due to obvious collector demand). But if I'd have an Imperial Star Destroyer be no less than 9 feet long (my own preference), the Executor? Forget it!

Off scale to even the Imperial Star Destroyer, it would be at least 13 feet long or more. (I said OFF-SCALE to an Imp Star Destroyer - assuming they made us a 9 footer).

I don't rememer the dimensions of the USS Flag, but I'd love a regular Star Destroyer done to maybe that scale or slightly larger.

The Rebel Medical Frigate doesn't need to be that big. I'd say 6 feet to fit the OLD Millennium Falcon underneath it.

I hate to say it and it will never happen, but if Hasbro ever did make a 6-foot Medical Frigate, I would probably try to find a way to buy it. I've just always been a fan of the design of this ship. So I guess that's a yes from me, but it will never happen.

I'll give another 'if they were insane enough to make it then Yes' answer. However, along with the mon calamari star cruiser it is probably the least likely of all the already unlikely capital ships.

I always kinda liked the look of this ship. So if they would make it, I'd probably buy it. But the odds of it ever getting made are pretty much nil.

Tycho
05-02-2010, 11:38 AM
Yes. The question is "would you buy it?" That assumes that Hasbro makes it.

- and that you like the ship and would want to own it.

Additionally, you can input on what you'd pay for it, how big you'd like the ship to be, and what features you'd want to have on it.

If you don't want it, you'd probably either be concerned about the size and the price. Maybe, you just don't like the ship and what its function in the movie was.

"Because you'd prefer a different big ship (obviously Jabba's Sailbarge takes the cake on this one)" isn't the reason though. We already overwhelmingly voted in favor of the sailbarge. This isn't a question of "wasting the plastic and marketing budget." The Rebel Medical Frigate would not - simply because for Hasbro to make the RMF before Jabba's Sailbarge with the Sailbarge's kind of fan support, would be ludicrous!

I'd also say that a big ticket item like this would not come out on top of another big ticket item (like a star destroyer) and they'd be around on the market for a while - possibly done for some kind of made-to-order with non-refundable deposit plan - like we discussed for the Republic Star Destroyer.

What would the point of this "toy" be? What fun would be derived from the Medical Frigate were someone actually to make it? What would justify making such a large and expensive entry beyond completism and 1 diorama?

The Medical Frigate was pretty low on my list of capital ships, too. (Star Destroyer, Republic Star Destroyer, Rebel Blockade Runner...Medical Frigate?) But as I described in a previous post, it's a set that becomes more appealing when I think of it as a homebase or mothership.

Include a medical bay with cool bacta tank, a briefing room, and a good sized bridge. It's like, remember the Kenner Ewok Village? The heaviest action was a net and an elevator! And it's probably the all-time favorite Star Wars toy for those collectors who were kids during the first three films and played with the old Kenner figures.

I see the Medical Frigate as a Star Wars counterpart to The Real Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters. Not a lot of heavy "action" potential sure, but instead a great set piece to play with your figures. :lipsrsealed:

The Rebel Medical Frigate Vehicle TIED for a loss, 7-7.

The ship really needed more votes to push it over the hump, especially with few people voting (14-16 people is about average, but high demand vehicles pulled in nearly 30 participants in those threads that generated a higher interest).

Empire Strikes Back had 4/9 new vehicles demanded (tying ROTJ, btw).

ANH actually still has the highest demand for new vehicles thus far (and it's the oldest SW movie!).

ESB polling is now complete. We're done.

It worked out so there were 9 vehicles from each OT movie polled for. 4/9 won for ESB.

The Winners are:

Bespin Twin Pod Cloud Car [26-3] ***
Hoth's Echo Base Rebel Personnel Carrier [16-0]
Imperial Probot Droid With Delivery Pod Shuttle [16-0]
Hoth's Echo Base Rebel Laser Ice Drill [10-4]

The losers were:

Imperial Star Destroyer [9-10]
Rebel Transport [9-10]
TIE Bomber [5-10]
Hoth AT-ST [10-11] ***
Rebel Medical Frigate [7-7]

*** Hasbro has confirmed they will actually be producing these vehicles, not at all due to the results from our poll.

The AT-ST Hoth version is a low-cost issue for them, and the Twin Pod Cloud Car was already a commonly known high-demand-vehicle.

Maybe they could make an undersized mini-rig medical frigate, throw wheels on it, and have it set up so one figure could ride it.

I'd buy it if the pack-in is the obvious "2-1B with a mullet and flames painted down his sides."

Sort of like those Customs?
Have 2-1B with a mullet riding an orange medical frigate motorcycle with a zip cord?
Even have it with sound where it says, "I'd practice on a hot dog first."?

What I really don't get: to attack an enemy space station, why'd they bring the medical frigate? Were they expecting that many casualties in need of medical attention?

Folks aren't ever "too late," as these aren't really "official polls."

However, the results could tell us whether or not to even have official polls offering these selections.

Your vote would move the Medical Frigate into a winner category for my OT vehicle round-up report I'll put out on Wednesday (but barely).

Thus if someone were to do an official site poll (in the poll section, single vehicle at a time) the Rebel Medical Frigate has a little merit to be included, though such a slight victory here in a discussion thread, might surely indicate a loss in a greater site-wide poll. There's a lot of lurkers who don't want to post in these threads who might vote in a check-the-box poll.

Clearly it isn't worth the effort to poll for a new TIE Bomber, but the close calls could yield interesting results.
