How far could the VC go? Well, let's start with the prequel figures, because they're easiest.

I'd think that just primary (not necessarily just "the main") charcters would be done - and only on their respective movie cards.

I put an "x" in front of what has been done already.

TPM:

Qui-Gon
Qui-Gon Tatooine (this would probably be another carded figure)
Obi-Wan (E1 version)
Anakin (E1 version - and in this case, both helmets could be included)
Padme Handmaiden
Padme Tatooine
Queen Post-Senate / Nute Gunray's Arrest (never been made to this day)
Queen Amidala Senate Speech
Queen Amidala Battle for Theed
JarJar Binks (E1)
Darth Maul
Darth Sidious Hologram
Battle Droid (regular version)
C-3PO (E1 version)
N-1 Pilot (a never made before character)
Ric Olee

Captain Panaka (removeable hat, softgoods so he can sit in the Royal Starship)

Anoconda Farr (Rodian Senator)
Mas Ameeda
Captain Tarpals
Gungan Warrior
Watto
Sebulba
Shim Skywalker
Daultry Dofine
Tey How
Plo Koon
SaeSee Tiin
Ki-Adi Mundi

x- Anakin Peasant Disguise

Stass Allie
Aayla Secura
Tarful
Wookiee Warrior
Tion Meddon
Pau'n Security

Polis Masan (fat one, perhaps with space suit)
Padme's Medical Droid

I tried to give each movie an equal amount of characters on each type of cardback, but didn't recommend repeats.

(obviously Han Stormtrooper and Leia Ceremony should be done now, as could many others like Tarkin and cantina aliens, Rebel pilots...the Fleet Trooper, Antilles, etc. But they weren't in the '80s. I'm all for doing them now, too! - but I'm not buying characters I already have myself. So I'm just saying they'd look cool vintage carded).*

Counting variations on the droids and Snaggletoothe, plus Jabba, Salacious, and the Max Rebo Band, there were 102 figures in the original Kenner run that were significantly different. This did not take into account large and small heads, smiling figures, robe differences, and accessory variations.

Also note that some of the figures could be re-offered, especially ANH figures, and then some ESB figures, on the later ROTJ cards.

I believe Hasbro said they would NOT repeat POTF coin cards, but these could be made one day, too.

Meanwhile, ANH Leia could come out on ESB and ROTJ cards and still be a "correct, vintage Kenner represenation," and not repeat the 2004 OTC offering - though I think most would rather see a re-issue of that Leia from ANH on an ANH card - or buy it in the secondary market. However, Vader has never been released (modernized) on the ANH card, nor has Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, Stormtrooper, or Boba Fett.

*This is an excellent time to offer Bom Vimdim, and older figures like Wioslea, Leia Medical Frigate, Lando Smuggler, Hem Dazon, Dannik Jerriko, the Rebel Fleet Trooper, Djas Puhr, K-3PO, Dagobah Vader, Admiral Motti, Mon Mothma, Garindan, Luke Dagobah, and Han Stormtrooper could all be offered on vintage cards, while new figures like Bom Vimdim are made, other never-made-before figures like Taym-Dren Garen are offered.

R2 Sensorscope of the 2004 VOTC offerings (originally updated for a ROTJ card, could also be re-issued on an ESB card).

If they wanted true Vintage style, there'd be one AOTC Clonetrooper and one ROTS Clonetrooper. They could double as whatever commanders.

Well, some armor - like Bacara's - or if they made Neyo - differs significantly.

As far as the Phase-1's - I don't think the high ranks (red-captain, and yellow-commander, ought to be carded). If you army build, you'd buy many more of the lower ranks (plain, and green-sergeants, esp.) These low ranks could be included again in battlepacks with the high-ranking commanders. Entertainment Earth made the mistake of selling the officers in equal proportions to the non-coms.

OK, with the original vintage, I got out of 102 figures:

24 ANH
30 ESB
48 ROTJ

Obviously, ANH and ESB could catch up with ROTJ's 48 figures.

New ESB figures (up to 18):

1. Ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi***+ (could be done softgoods style like Hayden)
2. Darth Vader Apparition (Dagobah w. Luke's face)***
3. Leia Bespin
4. Leia Bespin Escape
5. Leia Medical Frigate
6. Han Bespin***
7. Han Echo Base (currently available)***+
8. Han Bespin Torture (re-card 2007, mabye with better lower body)
9. Han Carbon Freeze***
10. Luke Hoth
11. Luke Snowspeeder Pilot
12. Luke Dagobah (Bespin Jacket open)***+
13. Luke Medical Frigate
14. R2D2 Sensorscope (ESB card)
15. Hoth Rebel Soldier (never been offered, correctly modernized)***+
16. Hoth Rebel Commander (actually the trench solider with the beard, but carded w.o. beard = better)
17. Imperial Officer (originally on Kenner ESB card though)
18. TIE Fighter Pilot (originally on Kenner ESB card though)

*** Would almost definitely be a brand new figure! (6 / 18)
+ = never made before for the modern line! (3/18, counts in the 7 new figures)

ANH could have up to 24 new figures:

1. Vader on ANH card
2. Leia Yavin Ceremony***
3. Han Stormtrooper
4. Luke Stormtrooper
5. Luke Yavin Ceremony
6. Chewie ANH card
7. R2D2 ANH card
8. C-3PO ANH card
9. Stormtrooper ANH card
10. Death Star Trooper
11. Jawa
12. Gonk Droid
13. R5D4
14. Death Star Droid
15. Death Star Gunner
16. Sandtrooper (currently available)
17. Grand Moff Tarkin*** (might be kit-bashed)
18. Hammerhead (Momaw Nadon)
19. Snaggletoothe (Zutton)
20. Dr. Evezan***
21. Bom Vimdim***+
22. Wraith (Defel, Arliel Schlos)***+
23. Ranat (cantina rat)***+
24. Rebel Fleet Trooper

*** Would almost definitely be a brand new figure! (6 / 24)
+ = never made before for the modern line! (3 of the 24, counts in the 6 new figures)

And looking at this list, OT collectors who just get new figures will only have 13 figures from 42 to buy (from ANH / ESB combined)....

or for those who just get new CHARACTERS, they'll just have 7 out of 42 to purchase.

The 42 figures I suggested will save Hasbro tooling costs (29 / 42 anyway) but catch the first two OT movies up with ROTJ. Then they can go forward from there, I'd hope.

There could be 5 more figures from TPM offered:

1. Ratts Tyrell
2. Kitster
3. Wald
4. Boss Nass
5. Sabe (as Queen in black travel, softgoods to sit in Royal Starship)

All of these but Nass would be brand new figures. Nass and Sabe are kind of necessary characters from TPM to repeat and neither has been available since 2001-02. I'd love Kitster and Wald to be a 2-pack. If I could squeeze 1 more figure in here, I'd probably choose another repeat - Galactic Senate Security, (carded for TPM instead of AOTC). Senator Palpatine might be a good choice as well.

And 2 from AOTC:

1. Dexter Jettster vintage carded is probably necessary.
2. Captain Typho (duty uniform) vintage carded would also be good.

I'd love to go with Elan Sleezebaggano returning here if it need be a repack. Or Dorme would make an excellent never-made before figure, but tough sale. Corde would also fill in a scene. Carding Owen and Beru from AOTC would also be a simple solution. I do have never-made-before Separatists on my regular list, however (Rogwa Wodrata, Tiikes). It depends what Hasbro thinks would sell I'm sure.

This will catch all the prequels up to ROTS for vintage carding. Then Hasbro has a lot they could go further with here.

I myself am only interested in never-made-before characters, as I'll only be buying to OPEN, but the cards are beautiful!

If they start doing EVERY damn clone variation then the Vintage line will get even more bastardized than it already is. This is a unique line that has really added some nostalgia to the franchise but putting every different color of clone on it will effectively kill it in my eyes.

I agree. In fact, I think there is way too much focus on the Prequels for the Vintage Collection as it is.

But, I am a non-recovering list (LISTS... ) maker, so...

I agree. For prequels, it should be heavy hitters only.

And, T, my point was that, in 1980, Kenner would have only released one of each major style of Clonetrooper, color variations be darned.

I don't mind prequel Vintage only to make the figures consistent. I'm more tired of the Saga/Legends line and would prefer going all Vintage from here to eternity and let the Clone Wars have its own packaging....

Tycho

CHUX - the movie line has to get some new never-made-before Prequel figures out, or there won't be any (like Cliegg Lars) that the fans want. New Separatists, too (Rogwa Wodrata, anyone?) But yeah, the idea is to offer the prequel figures this way, as they never have been.

BIGBARADA - Hasbro is saving money in a bad economy by forgoing a lot of new tooling costs by offering up a lot of the same 'ol figures on vintage style cards. They're going OT/PT/OT/PT/OT/PT but I think it's converting to mixed waves soon enough. Thus far, it's been (Episodes) 5,3,6,2 with E4 planned, and E1 would then also make sense. I think the Expanded Universe will also get carded figures in this way, as there is no other assortment to get them out there (non-Animated Clone Wars EU that is - such as Bastila Shan and Nom Anor).

Figures Not Yet Made on Vintage Cards That Could/Should Be:

ANH:
Tonnika Sistahs

They won't do them because Angela Staines (spelling) will sue since she never signed a release for her likeness and wants the money.

There is contention over which actress modeled for which Tonnika, since the late Christine Hewitt (commonly thought of as Brea Tonnika) said she was OK with it at Celebration 3 when I got to speak to her.

El Chuxter

I said "heavy hitters." In my opinion, there are plenty of unmade heavy hitters remaining. Anyone with more than one line of dialogue is, to me, important enough to consider. Unless he looks like Temeura Morrison, in which case I don't give a crap.

Want to make a list and share, Chux?

I love lists!

Tycho

I made some more lists!

OK, we've had ESB, ROTS, ROTJ and so we start with AOTC, followed by ANH, and I'll assume TPM.

I'm going to continue in that order, just for the heck of it, because it turns out pretty comprehensive. Thus:

5 ESB
3 ROTS
6 ROTJ
2 AOTC
4 ANH
1 TPM

However, each OT movie will only have 3 waves, and PT movies will have 4 waves, as there is more to do in order to offer equal amounts of figures.

Hasbro isn't going to cater just to OT fans.

I did NOT work EU waves into this, though I love them myself. I'd just pick different choices from some of those Hasbro is rumored to have chosen.

BRAND NEW FIGURES are in bold

Where could we put Eeth Koth and Depa Billiba on this list?

Tycho
12-09-2010, 12:55 PM
I would put an Eeth Koth figure in a TPM wave.

March 2011, or September 2011 look good. So does August 2012.

Depa Billaba would work for an AOTC wave (she was in TPM, too - but Eeth Koth was not in AOTC - Agen Kolar replaced him resumably, that's why I split these two up).

Depa Billaba could best fit in: July 2011. I'm trying not to have too many female characters and Jedi Knights in any one wave, not counting main-character repeats. I already have Padme in her nightgown (they make her this way for ROTS, but pregnant of course - from the Evolutions 3-pack) included in this wave. Her having her blue outer robe that she wore for the balcony scene on Naboo would be great - but the figure would include the kohoun creatures that AOTC R2D2 was originally packed with, to market Zam Wessel's assasination attempt. They might even also pack-in that assasin droid that Obi-Wan was originally packed with, to help Padme move off the pegs (plus her softgoods robe from the Naboo balcony scene - perhaps hung behind her figure in the packaging).

If you have 2 female figures in the wave (according to Hasbro - I don't necessarily see proof of this) - Depa Billaba might have to be promoted with a good "action pose" picture for her card if she's on a coffin blister (vintage style). She'd be a tough sale. Or Hasbro could add silver stickers to the cards, saying "Jedi Council Member!" that could easily be removed by collectors who don't want that on their cardback.

Like I said before, I just like making lists.

I'm not a carded collector. I admire these, but I would not even buy 3/4 of the figures on these lists.

My taste is for more obscurities like Jocasta Nu, Cliegg Lars, many of Padme's outfits - though I fit plenty of them in here - as she IS a main character. And I like the Expanded Universe, though I have a preference for figures that Hasbro has NOT revealed plans to do (yet):

Nomi Sunrider
Cay Qel Droma
Sith War Era Mandalorian
Master Arca
Tott Doneeta
Krath Battle Droid
Sylvar

Zayne Carrick
Gryph
Mandalorian Warrior (Old Republic Era)

CW Padme
CW Bail Organa
CW Palpatine
CW Anaconda Farr
CW Satine

older Luke as Jedi Master - carded (black and gray Jedi outfit)
Leia, pregnant Jedi Apprentice
older Leia as Chief of State
older Han Solo NJO (in black)
Lando as Mining Baron
Yuuzhan Vong Warrior (single-carded, variations)
Anakin Solo
Jaina Solo in black ops
Jacen Solo as Darth Caedus
Mara Jade Skywalker
Admiral Palleon
Noghri

Anyway - these are some of the first EU figures that came to mind which are NOT on Hasbro's list.

There were promo pics of most of the Jedi holding sabers, IIRC. They could PhotoShop action-packed backgrounds behind them.

Amazingly, these lists gets EVERY single KENNER vintage figure from the OT carded - out in some wave - before the end of 2012!

This includes Blue Snaggletoothe and the original Max Rebo Band members!

I didn't throw some of the previous vintage cards (Greedo, Luke X-wing, Tusken Raider) back into the mix. There wasn't room. But they could be re-issued or offered in a special e-tailer case.

I also cover all the prequel heavy-hitters.

I wish I fit my last PT suggestions in there, like Dexter Jettster, Typho, Kitster, Wald, Boss Nass, Ratts Tyrell - who Hasbro actually is releasing (though I forgot), and Sabe in her battle dress (originally POTJ). But these can be adjusted.

Every wave is "playable," - that is that there are good guys and bad guys and characters that interact. The ESB mostly-Hoth wave in April 2012 is a little heavy with similar Hoth Rebels, including Luke, but the tan vest Rebel Soldier will look very different from the modern "Rebel Commander" figure whom is actually the basic look for one of the Rebels-in-the-trench-grunts. Luke looks more similar to the first vintage Hoth Rebel Solider with the tan vest, however, he'll have his lightsaber and a lot more removeable gear, so he can be packaged differently, distinguishing him as a Jedi apprentice, hero.

Amanaman (use Wal-Mart Comic Pack Exclusive)

Except for the fact that the Walmart Comic Pack Amanin looks absolutely nothing like Amanaman. They should either rerelease the POTJ sculpt or (preferably) completely reculpt the figure from scratch.

Also, your list of waves completely ignores the fact that Hasbro isn't doing movie-themed waves anymore. Everything is going to be mixed after the AOTC wave (which I really wish they would cancel and spread out over the course of 2011).

I think we are in agreement, BigBarada, though I'm not sure I understood your post.

I like the movie-themed waves, with related figures (for example, several Jabba Palace characters within a ROTJ group).

I had even liked the location waves, like back in 2004: Hoth, Bespin, Dagobah, etc.

It helps us keep track of what they are releasing, and helps to finish all the Vintage characters, plus acknowledge all the PT heavy-hitters.

The Prequels are here to stay and the best way to handle it is to have alternating waves, OT / PT like they're doing right now.

In that way, OT-only fans will be able to count on every-other-wave satisfying them (or attempting it anyway). And I think PT fans just like the whole saga.

One thing though, if the battle droids had been really hard-core, like Terminators, I think all fans might have enjoyed the PT more. However, since the toy line started making him so much money, Lucas has steered Star Wars towards kids and the droids (and the Separatists) could never be too threatening.

Remember Lucas was the age of many of us, 30-somethings, when he made a film with hardcore stormtroopers slaying HUMAN Rebel Fleet Troopers on the Blockade Runner. Then he was paid millions of dollars through kiddie licensing and we arrived at Ewoks even before the OT was complete.

Hasbro turned down a Terminator toy line because it was too violent and hardcore.

By the same token, Star Trek is a drama-based series, but with cool Starfleet and adversary geer, and the occasional shoot-out, most prominent in Deep Space Nine's 5 season war. It was completely geared towards adults as Trek address socio-political / religious issues - which is what Gene Roddenberry created it to do. When Star Wars does, "The Privacy Invasion Bill" in the Galactic Senate and Padme voting against it, the fans complain preferring hours of only shoot-em-ups.

So Star Wars remains the franchise for kids (and the more blissful), so the Preqels can't be too hardcore or threatening - because it's for 5 year olds to start getting into.

Meanwhile, there are other issues - like whether Obi-Wan should have been exclusively Yoda's padawan, etc. that we're not really discussing here.

^At the same token, I never found the Stormtroopers all that threatening after the blockade. They were cool, well-designed, and perfect cannon fodder for Solo and Luke, but horrible shots and useless at carrying out any of Vader's commands. As toys, THEY RULE! As army builders, THEY RULE Xs 2!

On the other hand, I think the super battle droids and destroyer droids in the PT are somewhat "threatening." I'm glad they didn't go for a "terminator" type design look for the droids. Terminators are too human looking and not "otherworldly enough" for the SW universe. I do think the battle droids are a bit too cartoonish and always look silly compared to clones, jedi, or most any PT figure.

If there was a vote, I would say "nay" to doing these mixed waves. I like movie-themed waves. I may not be collecting the PT releases, but I've been impressed with this marketing strategy. Why is Hasbro looking to change a proven formula?

You just answered your own question - not everyone collects from every movie, so if someone doesn't want the AOTC wave, then that's several weeks that they'll be completely uninterested in what's out there. Hasbro wants to make sure that there's something for everyone pretty consistently. This also opens the door to a wider selection of figures so they're not just narrowly focused on one film at a time. I have to think that there can't be too many more ESB-specific waves that they could still do anyway.

Yeah, for someone like me, who is usually only interested in figures from ROTJ, it means that I could potentially have at least one figure from each wave that I want rather than having only one wave that I'm interested in for that entire year.

In my pretend "wish they would" release waves I posted in this thread, I found enough figures to have 3 waves each from ANH and ESB.

ROTJ has 4 potential waves (as there were more 80's figures for ROTJ than for any of the other OT movies as KENNER tried to stretch the line as far as it would go into "the (figure collecting) dark times."

My waves were only designed to re-issue every KENNER OT figure on modern vintage cardbacks (excuse the oxymoron in that name, please).

However, of course the line could continue well beyond that with never-made-before figures. I added some from ANH and ESB to even the balance out, but ROTJ obviously has them with updates to Barada and the distinguishable Kithaba being only one example, but Herme Odle and Ephant Mon, plus the never-made-before Shasha Teil (an Ishi Tibb from Jabba's Palace) being other examples - not to mention "re-carding Giran" or whichever red Nikto is not represented by the vintage Nikto. And of course there's Sgt. Doallyn and so forth.

I can see Hasbro's point in making the pegs clear faster by doing multi-movie waves.

Then how about if each wave had at least 6 new figures, have one from each movie? If they want to do EU (and I know they are: Bastilla Shan, Nom Anor, etc) then they should also put 1 EU figure in each wave. When there was a solid EU wave in 2007 TAC, the figures didn't sit much (most - Revan, Malleck, any McQuarrie for the most part - just Gennedy Anakin and Yoda were easier to find).

I already posted my EU preference, which unfortunately, is not what Hasbro's decided to produce. Yet it seems like common sense that EU versions of the main SW charcters like Han, Luke, Leia, and Lando would sell - as well as promote the classic characters.

That's something I'd really like to see - the promotion of the classic characters in a new format that brings kid-interest to the OT characters.

From my own lists, I tried to figure out how much I am still involved with this hobby (though these are vintage carded figures and not inclusive of all the collector-type figures I would buy like the Ithorian Senator or other Expanded Universe characters).

So here's what I'd pick up:

TPM:

Queen Post-Senate / Nute Gunray's Arrest (never been made to this day)
Darth Sidious Hologram
Battle Droid (regular version)
N-1 Pilot (a never made before character)
Naboo Royal Security (perhaps a black ethnicity?)
Captain Panaka (removeable hat, softgoods so he can sit in the Royal Starship)
Chancellor Valorum (removeable cloak, for Royal Starship landing look)
Galactic Senate Security (face showing) (Done as AOTC figure, but could done ethnic variation)
Anoconda Farr (Rodian Senator)
Daultry Dofine
Tey How

AOTC

x - Padme Peasant Disguise
Padme Senator / Personal Apartment (never been made before)
Padme Kohuun Attack (nightgown, from 2nd assassination attempt)
Padme yellow dress from Naboo waterfalls (would look great carded)
JarJar (Padme's apartment - never been made before)
Battle Droid (red - Geonosis)
x- Super Battle Droid
Naboo Royal Guard (white guy version who speaks to Corde before landing)
Queen Jamilla
Chancellor Palpatine (red robes from "Emergency Powers")
Senator Tiikes (Separatist Quarren)
Rogwa Wodrata (Separtist)
Kaminoan Cloner
x - Bariss Offee
Cliegg Lars

ROTS

Padme (hair in buns from landing platform)
Padme (Senate, birth of the Empire speech)
Padme (Polis Masa, birth of the twins)
JarJar (Naboo Representative, moreso from speech in AOTC)
Chancellor Palpatine (as prisoner, softgoods)
x - Darth Sidious from Yoda Duel
Darth Sidious (as Emperor from birth of the Empire speech, no action features)
Destroyer Droid
x - Grievous' Body Guard (Magna Droid)
Nute Gunray
Bail Organa (Order 66, speeder pilot)
Bail Organa (Senator, birth of the Empire)
Wookiee Warrior
Polis Masan (fat one, perhaps with space suit)
Padme's Medical Droid

ANH

blue Snaggletoohe (taller Zutton error figure)

ESB

Han Carbon Freeze
Hoth Rebel Soldier (never been offered, correctly modernized)
Hoth Rebel Commander (actually the trench solider with the beard, but carded w.o. beard = better)
Bespin Security Guard (white guy with mustache - never been modernized)
Cloud Car Pilot (x-ESB card)
Yoda (with all prequel gear hidden in OT package) (x-ESB card)

ROTJ

Imperial Dignitary (Sim Aloo has never been modernized)
R2D2 Lightsaber Launch (x-ROTJ card)
Klaatu (Wooof) (x-ROTJ card)
Lumat

My list is heavy on Prequel figures because the PT hasn't been around as long as the OT and in the modern collection, the OT got a 4 year head start on TPM, a 6 year head start on AOTC, and and a 9 year head start on ROTS.

I like lists. I'm working on editing my novel right now, and making another list is a great distraction, while still helping me focus and organize my thoughts.

The cool characters from the prequels on Vintage cards would be the guards, the aliens and the troopers;I wouldn`t like 20 padmes and 40 Anakins because they`re not cool.

It's Down To Seven! (http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/specialreports/vintageversusmodern/)

From JediTempleArchives, this is an awesome page that shows the actual 100 vintage and their modern counterparts, or what's lacking.

I actually count 102 vintage, including Jabba and Salacious Crumb, but they've both been well-done and are (occasionally) available right now.
