With Episode I's theatrical 3D release getting a set release date of February 10th, 2012 (http://www.sirstevesguide.com/content.php/120-Episode-I-in-3D-Theatrical-Release-Date-Announced), Star Wars fans now have to start lining up again. While The Phantom Menace made the most money of any prequel, and was the very first commercial film shown with digital projection a month after its initial release, the use of 3D requires conversion since the film wasn't shot in 3D or even on digital (apart from one test scene on Tatooine) - the film also uses the least CGI of any prequel. Theatrical 3D projection also is more expensive than traditional cinema, and a small subset of the populace cannot use the technology, leading either to a 2D experience or headaches. And 3D projection requires wearing polarized glasses which dim the movie.
So, the question is, will you be seeing Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3D come February 2012, or is this fad something you'll be passing up?

I'll be there on opening day.
Since they're taking their time on the conversion, it should look amazing.

I plan on going to see it with my family, not necessarily on opening day, though. Its hard to pass up seeing a SW movie on the big screen and I'm curious to see how the 3D turns out on it.

I am aiming towards not going. I generally don't think 3D is necessary to a movie, the lens already deals with 3D issues through focus and depth of field. The only times I've enjoyed it is Disney's Captain EO (produced by Lucas) but there it's an event, and it's short enough that I don't get too bothered by it. But I can't really enjoy 3D for too long, I get a little buzzy behind the eyes after about 15 minutes of it. I read recently the reason for that is that the brain is perceiving the 3D, but the eyes are still focused on the plane of the projection's reflection, the screen, so your eyes and brain aren't in sync.
Also, I just think converted 3D is lame.

I'd like to say "yes." I really would. But I loathe 3D. No point in going to see it if it's going to give me a headache and cost three times as much.

Not sure where you're paying 3x as much for your ticket. Guess it's a lot cheaper here.

I can get regular admission tickets through my wife's work for $6, but they're not good on 3D movies. Those run about $16-18.

Yeah, a lot cheaper around here then.

I'm absolutely, definitely going, and I'm really looking forward to it. If the conversion works for me then I'll likely go multiple times. 3D or not, it's just a hell of a lot of fun to see Star Wars on the big screen.
Conversion from 2D got a really bad rap from Clash of the Titans, but they only took, like, two months to do that one, so it's unfair to base it on cases like these. I don't think 3D is always necessary (well, technically, I don't think it's ever necessary), but when used well, it can create a unique, immersive experience (I really enjoyed its use in TRON Legacy). Star Wars has always been synonymous with the best possible visual standards, so I expect nothing less from this release.
Chux, are you sure that's not for Imax 3D, or something? That seems insanely high. Maybe it's a California thing.

Maybe it's a California thing.
Unfortunately, I have no doubt that that's the reason. :(

For me, I plan on seeing it in SPITE of the fact that it is 3D converted; because it is Star Wars and it is in theatres.
I am with Chux. I LOATHE 3D. For me, it adds nothing to the expierence. Nothing. It is just an excuse for studios to charge me more money and force me to wear annoying glasses and give me a headache.

"Normal" SoCal movie prices 'round here seem to run about $11, and you add about $3-4 for 3-D.
Will I see it? Definitely. Will I see it opening day? Likely? Will I see it at midnight? Doubtful. Will I see it alone? I sure hope not.
Why will I see it? Not because it's 3-D, but to keep up the tradition of seeing every SW film on opening day since ROJ back in '83, that's all.

Oh really? So you went to Germany in the '80s for Caravan of Courage?!? ;)

without a doubt I'm looking forward to seeing this in 3D... here's hoping that they splice some of the deleted scenes in the film as well. wouold love to see them splice the waterfall scene again.
as far as the 3D is concerned.... i'm really hoping that Lucasfilm can really blow us away with the 3D effects... so far 3D has been a major letdown lately (Avatar and Alice in Wonderland) come to mind for me...perhaps it was the theater or the effects were not that great.
I remember taking my cousins to go see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in the Loews theater in New Brunswick NJ and was blown away by the 3D... here's hoping Lucas can do the same with TPM.
already have plans to see the film at the new AMC Dine in Theater in Menlo Mall.

I'm still up in the air on this one and AOTC for a few reasons.
Reasons I want to see it:
It's Star Wars in the movie theater.
I really like the lightsaber fight at the end.
I like most of the design in the movie.
I like the soundtrack.
Leim Nealson is great, even with the bad writting for his character.
Reasons I may pass:
I can not physicaly see in 3D, and when movie tickets cost 14 bucks or more for 3D each It's just not worth it for me. Thus, 3D movies amount to nothing more than me paying 7 dollars more for a movie ticket to wear sunglasses in the theater.
TPM is second from the bottom in order of star wars films. I havn't watched it in years
I'm not thrilled with alot of the writting, plot, acting, or directing.

I have enjoyed a few 3-D movies in the past, like "Avatar" and "How to train your Dragon" and I'm sure a few others. I do plan on seeing it, but The Phantom Menace was my least favorite of the 6 Star Wars movies. I will most likely be standing in the theatre in my Stormtrooper armor, and meeting other SW fans, I just hope it isn't another midnight opening, I'm getting to old for that kind of thing.

I actually think it will be more fun to go to the show and see all the other fans, like a Star Wars Celebration, versus being thrilled by actually enjoying the movie.
I may just treat some friends to make it a fun, casual, social experience. They may not want to go to a midnight performance. In that case, we'll go to a day show then.
Meanwhile, I'll just show up by myself to the midnight show (without a ticket ....probably -geeze I'm such a Star Wars junkie. OKAY, I'LL BUY A KARPFENG TICKET!) but bring my F/X Saber so I can fight everyone! I love kicking butt

I am done with midnight releases for the time being. While there is an energy about a midnight movie line, everybody feels lousy by the end because it's so late, so the energy is totally gone, and only grumbles remain. It's too much work for too little a reward. "I'm the first to see this new thing!" Only no, you're not really, there's always a bigger fish, and now you have to go to work on Friday feeling like the bottom of a shoe.

...and I am part of that subset. I would hope that there are some theaters showing it in 2D as well. Most of the 3D movies released in the past few years have had this option...I hope Lucas/Fox does it for these movies too.
