View Full Version : Which razor do you use?

Disposable? Electric? Flexing blades? Pivoting blade head? 1 blade? 2 blades? 3 blades?!? Do you throw out your blade after a length of time or a number of shaves or just whenever it starts to go? Does anybody still really use standard razor blades to shave? Are you actually happy with your razor, or do you just use it because it's convenient in some way? How many razors did you try before you came across the one you're using now?
There are a lot of different razors out there and nearly each one has its own gimmick. Some give a great shave, but don't last long. Others last quite a long time, but never really give you an adequate shave. I'm curious what you folks use because I've never really had a great long-term razor.

I have a norelco lift and cut system, but lately it hasnt been living upto what it used to.
I recently started using the Gillette Mach 3 razor, and have been very pleased with the results.
The razor itself and a set of blades goes for under $10 and it is a great buy if you are looking for an efficient razor.
It did not leave my skin irritated or all cut up like most new razors do. Indeed they are sharp, but since each cartridge has 3 blades on it, no 1 razor is on your skin all the time.

When I shaved everyday, I used the Gillette Mach 3 blades. They were the only ones that didn't chop half my face off or give me severe razor bumps.
Now I just go for the natural Grizzly Adams look. Ahhh, the carefree life of a civilian.:)

Mach 3 is the way to go. I had 3 electric razors b/4 the Mach 3 and they just wouldn't shave close enough. I got the Mach 3 about 2yrs ago and I haven't gone back since.

this has to be the weirdest thread ever. you make it sound like a marketing ploy. :D :p
okay, I use a Gillette Sensor. Twin blades without guard wire. Pivoting head with a lubricating strip on the top of the blade head.
I use the blade head for a week and then chuck it. I like the grip on the original handle. better than the massive chunky new style mach 3 gubbins. To be honest, before using this i only ever used the cheap nasty disposable razors from Gillette - Blue II. bad shaves but not as bad as BIC. Those orange BIC disposables are the most vicious things ever!
I based my search on how the handle fittted my hand and how easy it was to get the blade to follow my chiselled jawline :D I've got a really sharp angular jaw and most razors miss the bit just underneath and toward the back of my jaw.this Sensor was great for reaching there and I virtually never get any nicks or cuts even when the blades are getting blunt. but i think it's also down to skin type and shaving foam versus mousse versus gel versus soap versus whatever else people use. if you don't get much daylight to your skin or enough sleep at regular intervals and at reasonably standard set times and durations, your skin will become dry and sensitive. this is when you're most likely to cut yourself shaving or find that the hair folicals hurt as you shave. it's also when you achieve the least accurate shave.
guys always forget to use a moisturiser too. Sounds really girly but it stops you looking like a wrinkled potato by the time you reach middle age and it freshens you up after the tightening effect a shave has on the skin. A moisturising balm is the best solution really not aftershave or cologne which are alcohol based and further dry out the skin.
This has been brought to you by Chantalle the beautician..... :D

I used to use a Gillette Atra Plus. Absolutely horrible, usually cut my face. Then for my 18th birthday, I got a Mach3 in the mail from...hmmm...was it Gillette, the Army, or otherwise, I can't remember. Anyways, I've used that one ever since, because it gives a really clean shave.
I wish my face wasn't so hairy...I could look like AOTC Obi-Wan in a month.

Or lak Sivrak in a couple of months? :crazed: :p
of course I was completely forgetting that over in the states and especially California you actually have the sun to contend with as far as skin goes. over here in grey-t britain we don't have that so our skin is softer  hard leathery sun dried skin is going to be tough for any razor to tackle. And then there's the ravages of things like smoking. Smoking makes the skin really hard to shave. Completely buggars up the ph balance........
I know way too much about this. Alls i'll say is don't use an electric razor. Nasty nasty things. The best shave is still a good old fashioned barbers cut throat razor and a hot towel afterwards. Wish i could afford to have it done... :(

Mach 3 baby! I like the gel shave cream as well. The razor has given me a very close shave every time. I should probably change the blade again (it's been several months), but I don't shave daily......I think it is more like weekly. I just have to remember to buy some ;). The wife uses the disposable pink ones.

I've just been curious about this for a while, thought maybe someone was using something better than what I was.
For me, I started with an electric which never really gave me a good shave, but it was quick. After a few disposables, I switched to the Schick Tracer FX, but the bendy blades didn't work that well. Gillette sent me a free Sensor XL and its pivoting head worked out pretty well for a while. Then, a friend strenuously suggested the Mach 3 - said it was so much better than what he'd been using, the Atra - and since it came with some freebie at the time, I bought it. It's pretty nice, better than the Sensor XL, and the alternate "dragging" style of handle works nicely for most shaving, though under the nose is still hard to get at because the head is pretty large.
Evenflow, why not a Mach 9? 9 pivoting blades against your face, like shaving with a deck of cards. ;)

which razor do you use?
sheeesh.
gillette sensor here. the only razor i've used in a decade (i hope you've changed the blade a time or two in that time frame )
electrics never seemed to do a job that i was satisfied with, and it wasn't til the sensor came out, that i was even happy with razors at all. almost any type of razor, single double, disposable, replaceable, etc, would chew my face to bits. i'v been very happy with the sensor.

Jargo, you mustn't forget that if the sun don't shine you get a tan from standing in the English rain. Or something like that. :D
I know this must sound incredibly ignorant, but I don't remember what brand. I got a new variety for Christmas and like it much better than my old (and I do mean old) Schick. But I can't think of what it is at the moment. Quoth the Homer, "D'oh!"

been using the Gillette Sensor for years. received a Mach 3 for xmas, but haven't even opened the box yet. since I have a beard, I only shave a small part of each cheek, and my neck below the beard, so I also don't ever use shaving cream or anything like that. with the lubricating strip on the Sensor's cartridge, and with no serious curves to go over, shaving cream is an unnecessary waste for wusses.

Gillette Sensor man here... everyday in every way! I tried the Mach3 and it was a disappointment. It missed too many hairs and left "Bald spots" on my face. Inconsistent and the blades were too bloody expensive!

i can't believe 54 people have looked at this thread in an hour
no doubt.....:D .......and with that, I think it's safe to say that this website is visited primarily by a bunch of butt-scratching men.
Electric razors are nice when your 15 or 16 (any use of them beyond that age, however......well.......dont' say I didn't warn you when you're STILL getting "ankled" in college).
The Gillette Sensor.

I received a blade razor as a "gift" while in junior college almost 10 years ago. I stil have it, and have yet to open the package. I have never, and plan to never, used a manual razor. I have used Norelco and Remington before, but my last 2 have been Norelco ones. I received my first and second as gifts, the most recent as a gift, too.

Anybody is welcome in this discussion, no matter the gender. However, I've found shaving my face with women's shavers to be quite lacking, especially those wheel ones, what are they called, daisy shavers?
I kinda like the look of the Jedi Communictor gillette razors though, they look like a comfortable handle and a pivoting head. Never tried one though.
From this thread's repsonses, it looks like between the Mach 3 and the Sensor, Gillette is holding quite a lot of the market.

I said it before and I will say it again: Mach 3!!
I think it is the best razor that money can buy.
Sure it may cost a little more than an ordinary razor, but the blades are great, the razor is great, and the results are great!!
Mach 3, Mach 3, Mach 3!!
Now if you all would please excuse me, I am going to go shave.

I actually use whatever razor is closest to my hand when shaving crosses my mind. I'm blind as a bat without glasses or lenses, so sadly (here it is) I have to say that my partners' (ooohhh, this is tough) Jedi communicator in pastel green is the one I usually end up with. Classic 2 blade head (MENs blades, dammit!!). Whoever said earlier that it has cool contours was right, it's easy to do the seam between yer throat and skull with, that's for sure. My beard grows like creeping Kudzu, and my (her, whatever) blades are invariably dull, so it takes 3 shaves to get rid of that "changeling" look. Hopefully this explains my pic.

Funny you should mention "what's at hand", because I NEVER seem to throw out my old razors. Sure, I'll toss out the blades, but the razors themselves are all still around and they all have fresh blades - when I'm in the shower and in a hurry, the closest one is the Tracer FX; if I bury the Mach 3 with other stuff by my sink, I'll use the Sensor XL; only once in the past 6 years have I been desparate enough to plug in the electric though. ;)

My profile photo shows me with some facial hair. (I challenge you to determine which one's me!) I seldom skip a day shaving because one thing electric ones don't do well is cut extra hair. So about 30 hours is the most I can go without going under the electric knife!

Norelco something or other. It's got two rotating lift and cut circle things instead of the classic three. It's alright, nothing to write home about. I've been hoping for anything better. I briefly tried using a REAL razor, but damn that hurts. Maybe I'll try that Mach 3. There should be a try it for a week trial period allowed on these things.
Maybe I can get me face WAXED.:dead:
