View Full Version : Star Wars - The Black Series: 6" Wave 3 Discussion Thread!

Well... I guess Wave 3 isn't a rumor any longer thanks to the Star Wars Celebration reveals.
So may as well start a dedicated discussion thread for that wave as well.
The wave consists of Luke: Bespin, Stormtrooper, and Obi-Wan: RotS.
You can find some pretty good Hi-Res pics here:
The 4th figure in the wave is supposed to be Anakin: RotS to pair with the Obi-Wan: RotS.
Luke's face looks a bit wonky in the badly posed Hi-Res pic. But pretty darn good on display at Celebration.

I've seen some shots from CE2 where Luke Bespin looks good, but close-up ishots from the event t's really bad. I think it's the same exact piece as shown in the pics, just different angles and lighting.
I'm not loving the over-extended trigger finger on that Luke body since most of the time he's shown holding a lightsaber. Overall, aside from the likeness it looks good, but that likeness will probably torpedo it for me.
Stormtrooper needs to go back to the drawing board, that helmet is a mess at the "mouth", the rest looks good but that bulbous "mouth" kills it outright and if Disney-Lucasfilm approved it, then they're fools.
Obi-Wan's head looks really small and his upper body looks smaller in proportion to his lower body, it's like the figure is a pyramid, or a Gundam mobile suit with the really high waist. Sculpt looks inoffensive but hardly mindblowing.

Yoda's News has new boxed and loose pics of 3 of the 4 figures from Wave 3.
Luke: Bespin looks like he has a new head... which is much better than the one we've seen at Cons.
The Stormtrooper seems to have a much improved headsculpt as well. Should make people happier.
Obi-Wan: RotS looks better as well. Though the paint is a little sloppy on the press images. No cloak though.

The figures that Hasbro has used in past press pics for the last two series looked really rough as well. And they turned out much much better painted and looking in person. I still can't believe after all these years that Hasbro can't seem to get good looking press figures or take decent press pics of their toys.

If that Luke head is an improvement, what did they show before? lol
Not trying to sound snarky (these look good otherwise, though Obi-Wan looks a tad too much like a blown-up 3.75" figure), but, if they're capable of doing so, I'd love them to shrink that Luke head down and use it for a Cross Country figure for the G.I. Joe line.

The stormtrooper definitely looks better, but did they just end up reusing the sandtrooper's helmet? I've never been good at telling the differences on the storm/sandtrooper costumes.
The human eyes aren't looking very good on any of the images I've seen of figures past wave 1, and it's not like the factory has been perfect with paint so far anyway. Hopefully I'll like them more in person.
The lack of accessories is also frustrating. With wave 1, they weren't overloaded with accessories but there was a fair amount overall (at least for the sandtrooper and Maul), and Han and Leia bring up wave 2's average, but only getting one or two per figure makes it feel like a ripoff.

Hasbro is horrible with the figures they use for their press photos. That's been true for years now.
Wave 1 and 2 both turned out way better than the pics that Hasbro marketing sent out.
As for accessories... I agree that Wave 3 is sorta lacking. But there's not a lot they could add.
With Wave 2 only Greedo doesn't come with much. And also doesn't lend himself to much.
As for Wave 3... they could have given Luke: Bespin a removable hand and auto-tourniquet.
But to be movie accurate a battle damaged version with those things would make more sense.
That's why the Hot Toys version they did included two figures to really be movie accurate.
Obi-Wan and Anakin really should have included cloth robes though. Still hoping that Anakin will at least come with a interchangable forearm with his mechanical forearm. Even if we only see the arm when he's not in his Jedi Uniform.

I picked up Obi-Wan and Bespin Luke at a record store yesterday and will be adding them to the Database (http://www.sirstevesguide.com/db/) this week. They're both very cool – Luke is going to look fantastic with Vader and, whenever they get around to him, Yoda.

Glad to hear it, but I haven't seen an image yet that convinced me that Obi-Wan's not a disaster of bad paint and that Luke's not suffering a wonky likeness, so you'll be the make-or-break on them.

2822828229I got this wave (not the stormtrooper) and took pictures of them and uploaded them to the LA Just Found forum.
I think I can put them here. It's a feature of the site now - where you can share images and not upload them (or be prevented from) two-fold.
Anyway, I really hope:
Boba Fett is re-released like they said. I mean to get one for BobaFrett and also I think I'll get one for myself.
I was right there at Comic Con but didn't want to wait in line for him. Waiting in lines is not how I enjoy myself. But now that I'm thinking about what I would do with him, (put my own Fett with Lando Bespin - and hope they make Lando Bespin) - having Lando leaning down to make sure Han survived freezing with Fett standing over him sounds like a pretty cool display.
Maybe adding Vader, stormtroopers to Lando, Frozen Han, and Fett would look great?

Here is my Luke review (http://www.sirstevesguide.com/db/luke-skywalker-11/). I should have more time to get to Obi-Wan tomorrow finally.

I found this lovely Leia gracing the pegs at a local Target. I was laughing so hard that I was crying. The best part was that it caught the attention of several other shoppers and by the time all was said and done, there were 6 of us laughing at how badly the paint mask for the eyes was aligned!!!
This. Is. Awesome.

It has the Look-Over-There action feature! :crazed: Priceless... seriously, I don't think anyone would pay money for this'n at any price.
03-25-2014, 12:53 PM
That's worse than any bad 3.75" figure paint job!!
I still think this one is the funniest!! I've only bought a few of these 'cos the humans look... not great for the most part. I thought the first Luke looked sleepy. I did manage to find a good Han and a good Leia (obviously not this one) and got those. This line's been very hit-or-miss for me since these are $20 a pop.

Switching to tampo eyes is really a shame, wave 1's masked eyes look so much better and have a far lesser chance of THAT happening.

Got Luke Bespin from HTS, and it's got a paint defect in the eyes, especially the left eye. This line continues its horrible QC, and it's very disappointing - I saw 2 more at TRU the other day and they had almost as bad paint in the eyes so I didn't bother. The lightsaber was put into the package with the grasper at the top face up instead of to the side, it bent the saber blade.
The figure is ok but not as good as Luke X-wing. First off, Luke Bespin's head is sculpted a little narrow, it's a good sculpt in likeness but from straight on it doesn't work as well as it should; the hair is very Bespin to the point where it doesn't work for Dagobah.
Then there's the hands, both are crooked in and permanently posed that way, it looks weird.
And the figure's inability to bring his arms together for a 2-handed saber grip that doesn't rely on the elbows is disappointing, Bespin is where Luke really came into his own doing that - you'd think with the shoulder joints being gappy, they'd at least add range of motion, but no. I'd still like to see a double-hinged elbow on these figures, so far only the troopers have it.
The lack of a removable hand is disappointing as all get-out, and the gunbelt not being removable (something he does on Dagobah) is also a let-down.
Other than that stuff, it's solid sculpting (this is post-Dagobah, pre-battle fatigues), the outfit and boots have a ton of weathering, the gunbelt and gun work nicely, it holds up but doesn't impress.

JT, I did a 2-handed lightsaber grip with my Luke Bespin (see picture above).
That being said, I was very limited in what direction I could pose Luke with a double-grip. I agree with you that the joint articulation could have been better.
Also, I'm sure the Bespin-specific Luke was so "if" this line has any future, they can re-sell us a Dagobah Luke.
They should still make a Dagobah Luke with his Bespin jacket open - when Yoda raises his X-wing (for 3 3/4") - as that is a variation on Luke they have not made yet. I remember clamoring for the Medical Frigate Luke, now we could do this from ESB. Also for 3 3/4", I don't think a Tatooine Luke with the Death Star Stormtrooper belt has ever been carded (though I'm not really in the market for that one - I think.)
Back to 6" - I may purchase the ROTJ Luke Death Star II, but I want the vest ON for Jabba's Palace. Funny how it was just the opposite desire of mine for ROTJ Luke with the 3 3/4".
I think Hasbro should start packaging figures WITHOUT their heads! (Yes) Then in a few years after they make their money on customizers that add the characters' heads in the privacy of their own homes, they can come out with the cross-eyed versions that include heads! Then, in another year, they can make the "definitive" figure with eyes that look forward. Oh $#!+ - I shouldn't give them any ideas.
But you read it here first kids: "the Black Series to be followed by the Headless Series" (to be shown falling over in the display cases at Comic Con.)
Actually, at this point, as I'm cherry-picking the 6," all I really want now is a Snowtrooper.
I would consider Lando if I can find 2 Boba Fetts....(I should've gotten the Comic Con one - I was there but turned the opportunity down). I may get a couple stormtroopers. But 1 of the Fetts is for BobaFrett - so if any actually find an extra - you could even send it directly to him and I'll pay for it (retail + shipping).
I don't think they'll ever make red-Bespin dress Leia, but I'd consider Bespin Han, and getting myself a Chewie 6" and Vader if they did. I love the Cloud City dinner scene where Han shoots at Vader!
Leia red-Bespin gown is one of the most under-the-radar versions of a main character - obviously because she wore that outfit for almost no action scenes - except that WAS an action scene (Bespin capture).
The other 6" I'd consider are Qui-Gon (but a major pegwarmer if they did him) and maybe the Hoth Luke and Han if they're making the Wampa and tauntauns.
I kind of have an ESB interest in 6" figures if you couldn't tell.
04-09-2014, 02:53 PM
I wanted a straight-arm pose, not a bent-elbow pose. Also, with as expensive as these figures are and how soft sales are, if they think they can double-dip collectors they are SORELY mistaken - each figure is supposed to be the ultimate version.

I saw Obi-Wan for the first time today. Nothing stood out about him. Someone earlier commented that he looked like a scaled up 3.25" figure. That's a pretty accurate description. That being said, after I thought about it, "nothing stands out" seems like kind of a good comment for this line. So I picked him up. I'll open him tomorrow.
04-10-2014, 02:27 AM
My interest in this line pretty much went "piff" after the first wave. I'll be keeping my eyes open for the Biker Scout and holding out hope that we see a really nice looking TIE Fighter Pilot before the line dies (I'm predicting that the line will last long enough to give us one wave of Ep7 figures, then that will be the end of it); but that's really all that I care about.
04-10-2014, 09:21 AM
I opened Obi Wan today. The figure is fine: nothing special, nothing overly negative. He has the same "deer in the headlights" facial expression that is typical for this line. He not really pose-able, at least in a 2-handed stance. His clothes have a weird combination of hard plastic, soft plastic, and soft goods. That seems to work, with the exception of his arm sleeves, which makes poses hard. Should have gone with soft goods for the sleeves, especially considering that when you do get him in a two-handed pose, the sleeves hang outward in a "reversal of gravity" state. It would have been nice to have included replaceable hands like the Han figure so that you could pose him in his unmistakeable pointing stance. My biggest complaint is that his leg connection is loose, which makes it possible for him to go to a Coruscant night club and grind on the dance floor I guess.

Jabba's Palace Luke Jedi
Gamorrean Guard (and / or Wooof) would be all I ask for.
Lando Bespin would also be nice, with a re-release of Boba Fett.
04-10-2014, 09:12 PM
A Gamorrean Guard would actually be pretty cool, but it's going to be VERY difficult to top the 3.75" figure they made in 2010. That one still holds up as one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) Star Wars figures ever made.
Given the paint apps that we've seen in the 6" line so far, I don't think they could even come close to this again:
