Fincher does it again! Man, he makes some dark movies doesn't he? And I don't neccassarily mean dark subject matter. He just doesn't use or can't afford lights in his movies. This one is no exception. Plenty of shadowy thrills. David Koepp's script could have used some tweaking. It starts out strong with some vivid characters, but begins to paint itself into a corner as the movie progresses. It's hard to keep Jodie Foster in a tiny panic room for two hours and they started to run out of ideas. I didn't much like the father showing up in the last third. Better to have the heroine win her own battles, I think. And the ending seems pat and Un-Fincherish leaning towards the Hollywood ending of his other film, The Game. So it's not as good as Se7en and Fight Club, but still a darn good movie.

Your thoughts?

Well, I for one will not be going to see this movie. The premise of it just doesn't appeal to me and from what I've seen of the previews, it looks a little lame.

I seem to only like Fincher when Brad Pitt is involved. I won't being seeing this movie either. I don't like the premise, and I don't like Jodie Foster at all.

what's it about, exactly?

Yeah, I'm going with Fulit on this one. From the trailers, I got no real sense of what the heck was going on in this film. I honestly couldn't tell you with any degree of certainty what this flick is supposed to be about. I actually was a bit curious, but I've been burned by effective-yet-not-informative trailers before.

It's called Panic Room because it has Rick McCallum locked in a room for two hours without any butts to kiss.

The premise is a recently divorced women and her daughter move into a luxurious townhouse that recenly belonged to a rich old guy. The dude was a bit of an eccentric and had a "Panic Room " installed in the master bedroom. Three guys break in, thinking the place is still in escrow and therefore empty, to steal something in the house. It turns out what they want is in the Panic Room that Jodie Foster and her daughter hide in. The rest of the movie is them trying to get in, while JF, who is trapped inside by them, is trying to get out to get help. Lots of cat and mouse, check/countercheck thrills ensue.

From the looks of it, this movie could easily be shortened:
<JF> Get in the room!
<Whoever> Ok, I'm in, we're all sealed up.
*JF grabs a phone* "Hello, 911?"

The End. :D

When I first saw the trailer, I thought JF had a son in this movie.

I'm up and down with Fincher - I liked Se7en, but didn't care for Fight Club. I'll probably see it this week and give it a try :)

Sorry. No phone. There's a phone LINE in the Panic Room, but JF never hooked it up. (This is their first night in the house remember?)
There's a cell phone in the bedroom outside the Panic Room, but there's also three guys outside waiting for JF to open the Panic Room door to GET the cell phone.

Try again, LT basker.;) :D

Sorry LTB....let me try one:

JF: "Get in the room!"

Son: "Ok, I'm in, we're all sealed up."

JF: "What do you want?"

Burglars: "What we want is in that room!"

JF: "Ok...just so you know, this room has cameras that show the whole house, and I see you three guys outside the door. So here's the deal: (Thinks to herself...."the study is the room furthest from here")...Ok, all of you stand in front of the camera in the study. I'll set the "thing" outside the door."

Burglars: Thanks.

Alright, now Howdy just referred to JF's "son". What is the child's gender?

This is madness :crazed:

<JF> "Get in the Panic Room!"
<whoever> "Okay, I'm in and we're sealed up!"
<JF> "Okay, now hit the alarm button to send the message to the police station that we're in trouble and trapped in the Panic Room."
<whoever> "Sorry, no button."
<JF> "What?? Ok, what about a secret passage way leading to the outside?"
<whoever> "Nope..."
<JF> "What about smoke bombs? Weapons? An always hooked up telephone? Anyway to send a message??"
<whoever> "Nope, nope, nope, and definitely...nope."
<JF> "This is ridiculous! Even UPN shows have better writing than this! All right fine, I'm gonna take some sleeping pills, wake me when they're gone."
<whoever> "No sleeping pills either."
<JF> "How come the house couldn't get sealed up while we can have an escape route to the outside while they're trapped in those parts of the house?"
<whoever> "That would've been SMART."

There. :D Now ya gotta admit, if someone's coming to kill you and you get in something like a Panic Room and you know they're not gonna give up without a fight there should be some...thing...to alert the police, like oh say... A panic button. :p

I found the picture cliche'. I'm not much of a Jody Foster fan to begin with. Raul was a lame character. I waited for the surprise twist which didn't happen.

<SPOILER>

The plot had more holes in it than milk-bone underwear given to a doberman pincer. Why the hell didn't the guy that stood to inherit the money borrow money from the bank and buy the stupid house then worked to open the safe at his leisure? The whole premise was rediculous.

The only part of the movie that was humerous was the gas scene. The rest of this movie sucked bad. Blade II on te other hand...now that was a good flick.

preacher,

you are correct sir, blade 2 was awesome. i've grown kind of tired of paint by the number action flicks, as i was expecting blade 2 to be, but i was pleasantly suprised. it's not often the sequal is better than the original, but it was here.

Let's just say it's a good thing this isn't a Blade II thread or I'd be trashing that film for an hour. :D

I too thought Jodie Foster had a son in this movie, from the trailers.

I'm so sick of the Hollywood "art" flicks that try so hard, that I'm more interested in brainless action sci-fi movies that require no thought, just eye candy. That's why I loved Blade 2, the action was awesome, the story was mediocore, and the characters were cool.

For the most part though, the film industry has gone down hill, IMO. Although there are really great films coming out, most are pure crap or rehashed ideas. If a movie comes out that is remotely good, I see it in theaters, I haven't been to a blockbuster in months.

He also did Alien 3 which was considered his first "big" directing experience. And I'm STILL not sure how I feel about that one

Alien 3 is the best Alien movie in the series.

Panic Room "inside goodies" When Jodie Foster calls her ex-husbands house and his new girlfriend/wife answers the phone, it's Nicole Kidman on the other end. Nicole, as you may recall, was supposed to play Jodie Fosters role, but an ankle injury she sustained on Moulin Rouge flared up again three weeks into shooting, and she had to be replaced. Cool cameo!

The neighbor across the garden that Jodie tries to signal with the flashlight is played by Andrew Kevin Walker, the screewriter who wrote Se7en, Sleepy Hollow, and 8MM. He also helped out a lot on Fight Club's script, but since union laws prevent him from being mentioned (even in the thank yous at the end of the movie) Fincher named the three police detectives who try to cut off Edward Norton's "goods" Detective Andrew, Detective Kevin, and Detective Walker.

DNA, I know exactly how I feel about Alien 3... I HATE it! Sorry Rollo, I totally disagree with you about this one, Alien 3 betrays the Alien franchise at nearly every turn.

Alien Cubed is the best of the series? HA ! :D

Sooooo, can anyone explain why Columbia Tristar (noted for their brilliant use of quality keepcases) decided to throw the DVD of Panic Room into a disgusting, thin box?

I saw it in stores, and am baffled by that decision.

Oh well, good thing I wasn't planning on buying it ! :p

It's a Super-Sbit release. They have funky boxes for their titles and drop almost all features for DTS sound. I heard they are planning the regular release later this year or early next. :p

That's what I heard and that's why I didn't buy this one...

Nope.

Every other Superbit I've seen has a regular case inside a cardboard outer box, for example I looked at the SuperBit "We Were Soldiers" the same day.

Panic Room comes in an ultra slim box, no keep case involved.

Loved the movie but the ending really sucked! I won't get into details for those that have not seen it yet.

We Were Soldiers is not a Superbit title, wrong studio. You must be thinking of The Patriot. :)

Columbia has changed the outer box once already, and now it sems they are going for another look. Did they do the same thing to Snatch?

I thought they dropped all the features so they could have a higher bit rate, hence Superbit. Not DTS Sound.

That's part of it too, but superbits always have DTS, which takes up an enormous amount of room, compared to regular sound tracks. So the combination of a higher bit rate, and the DTS track, pretty much leave no room for anything else. I'd rather have a slightly lower bit rate, Dolby sound (since in tests there is very little difference), and a ton of extras. :)

NO WAY! Columbia and other studios are doing the right thing IMO by including both tracks (and maybe commentary) on the movie disc. Leave all the "extra features for disc 2.

Tests don't mean anything. It's what sounds good to your ears that matter. I will say this though, the improvement in DTS sound greatly depends on how good the equipment it's being played on is and how it's set up.:)

Not according to proffessionally done tests, but again it's a matter of prefrence. But I would rather have my Dolby and Commentary tracks over DTS sound. Plus not every movie needs or deserves a 2-disc set, so adding DTS to every movie would mean less or no features on a lot of them. :)

I know not every "professionally done test" shows Dolby as being slightly inferior to DTS. We get copies of those tests all the time where I work, and I know "professionally" DTS is almost always preffered.

Your right though it is a matter of preference for each individual. :)

I just got "Soldiers" in the mail today (forgot to decline my Director's selection  ) so that's why it was in my head.
