View Full Version : The SSG BATTLE OF THE MACHINES Round 1 - Fight 11!!!

Oh my Lord, as in Dark Lord! Will this Battle of the Machines' round be intense!

The Dog Fight is back, and while we all love Star Wars for its awesome fleets of fightercraft, tonight the blazing battle across the stars will reach critical temperatures!

It's DARTH VADER'S TIE FIGHTER versus THE REBEL ALLIANCE'S Y-WING FIGHTER!

"Get set up in attack formation!"

The Koensayr BTL-S3 Y-wing Starfighter as represented by Hasbro's toy features extremely realistic Gold Squadron detailing straight from the Rebel's victory flight that won the Battle of Yavin. From the vintage days to now, the front laser cannons have been shortened a little, and the on-board Astromech is now represented by a dedicated prop versus having a droid slot that could hold an additional R2 unit action figure in this compartment. The cockpit still opens to seat one action figure, included as a bonus with this Rebel ship. An exclusive pilot figure comes with this Target Stores exclusive ship. The engine nacells are removeable, not without some difficulty, to pretend to affect repairs to battle damage. But the Y-wing can do some real damage on bombing runs by dropping its main payload weapon from its underbelly. A rotating, twin ion cannon rounds out the ship's attack and defensive armaments. (I just updated this description by adding that the Y-wing comes complete with remote activated landing gear! - definitely the best out of all the fighter ships, all 3 skids are designed realistically and come down in unison via one remote lever - pretty cool and I can't believe I forgot that!)

Darth Vader's Sienar Fleet Systems Advanced TIE Fighter is a main bad-boy in the Empire's Starfleet! This ship is completely resculpted compared to the vintage version, and features an awesome array of weapons the Dark Lord of the Sith can command from the one-seat cockpit. This ship accomodates ONLY Darth Vader, or he'll be very, very mad! At his disposal are repositioning laser cannons that can be extended or withdrawn, plus dual missle launchers that actually fire rockets. The main body's molding is authentically styled straight from "A New Hope" and features the crest where Lord Vader's ship has room to be the only TIE Fighter to have shields and a hyperdrive installed on board.

Which one of these superb Hasbro Star Wars toys could be your favorite vehicle?

Vote now and then let's talk about some really tough choices!

Vader's TIE! No contest, end of discussion. It had the repeating guns and the cool green missiles. Plus, let's not forget the fact that it's Vader's ship!!!

All the Y-Wing is, is an out of scale rebel fighter with a molded droid and flimsy engine prongs...

I vote Vader's Tie since I don't even have the Y-Wing Fighter.

Gotta go Vader's TIE as well, Tycho. Way to cool a ship, and Hasbro did the ship a decent job by completly resculpting the bubble section of the ship from the vintage version to actually be movie correct. I dispise that stupid battery compartment/handle on the vintage and new versions of the TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor. This ship was one of the best ships period in the POTF2 line, end of contest. :D

The Y-Wing is an ok ship, just not one of my favorites. The ship could really do for an updating to make it more properly scaled. Removing the droid slot was bad as well, they should have packed in a new Astromech, and a better pilot. The paintjob is great though, but it still doesn't help it beat Vader's ship. :)

Obviously I voted the same way as you guys, as you can tell this early in the game.

JarJar, I completely agree with everything you just said and couldn't have put it better myself!

Only if Vader 's Tie's cockpit was as detailed as Vader's Tie Gunner Station, it's detailed very well.

I dont know about you guys but I'm going for the Y-Wing. Its just one cool looking ship. Vaders fighter is just to stupid looking. At least the Y-Wig didn't have a freighter sneak up and shoot it.

Okay I couldn't help that.

But seriously. Most people seem to be going for the Imp ships in these polls. I thought this is only about the toy itself. Keeping it to that, I wil say that I like the detail on the Y-wing and so what if there's a molded R2. At least we finally got this ship. (even if in small quantities) I've always liked the shape of it. Vader's tie isn't that much of a departure from the traditional tie and therefore rather boring to me. At least the rebels have different styles. A, B, X, Y- wings all look different. The only thing that vader's tie has over the other types of tie's is that the wings don't get into the field of view when piloting. yes i know the t-bomber has the same wings but this again is a rather boring design.

Another thing LANDING GEAR. I happen to like that real world feel of it.

okay so enough of my rant.

I VOTE Y-WING!

I'm w/ jedi master sal, Y-Wing all the way!

Vader's TIE is kind of boring. I've had it boxed up for a few years now b/c it just hasn't captured my imagination.

Now the y-wing is cool! I realize and agree that it's a little out of scale, but I'm so glad to have it. The detail and paint deco are cool, and the droid prop don't bother me.

It looks like the tide is turning towards the Y-Side. DV's ship is a tad boring. It could use some electronic action. The Y-Wing is a good ship, including an action figure (although he is pretty white bread), with the only major drawback being lack of an actual droid socket.

I say Y-Wing gets my vote.

Wow! This match is currently as close as the Millennium Falcon versus the Queen's Royal Starship!

No predictions here! I wouldn't care to even guess who is going to win between Darth Vader's TIE and the Y-wing!

I'm glad this matchup is proving to be one of the more interesting ones of the preliminaries!

All of the Round 1 fights from here on out are going to get REALLY good! There are 5 left, before we make it to the Quarterfinals!!!

Who will be in the next round?

Since I'm not really a fan of either toy, I based my vote for the Y-Wing on it's "others". I like the window box it comes packaged in better than the previous POTF box. And it came with a cool, new, exclusive pilot. Well, maybe Ten Nunb isn't exactly cool, but you get my point. Plus, the "old" Y-Wing was always my favorite when I was a kid, even though the long engine thingies broke in about twenty minutes.

I vote for Vader's TIE, even though I hate the design of the toy. Sure it's an improvement over the vintage one; but just barely. The Y-Wing rerelease took away my favorite feature, the empty droid socket, so it loses out on principle alone (along with the fact that I've never actually seen the toy).

Unfortunately, it seems we will never get a better version of Vader's ship unless I get a job for Hasbro. It's really too bad, it really could have used the Power FX X-Wing type of treatment. But I understand that one of Hasbro's chief designers took a personal interest in seeing that ship made and built the prototype himself on his own spare time. Doubtful Vader's TIE will ever get the same treatment.

i have to vote y-wing as well. i like the detailing and that 'beat-the-hell-out-of' look. that's what the rebels were all about. true, the molded-in droid and the carbon-copy pilot is a bit disappointing, but overall this is one sweet ship.

and while i'm glad to see that hasbro finally released a movie-accurate vader TIE fighter, it's appearance is rather plastic and blase. the thing that really turns me off about vader's TIE is the addition of cannons and missiles to the wing struts. i really hate all the "improvements" hasbro attempted to try to make the toys "more exciting".

there's my two credits.

The exclusive figure is just a Biggs fig w/ a new head (or just no mustache). BTW, it lloks like the first POTF2 Luke X-Wing makes a return in the new W-M Snowspeeder (it's wearing the snow padded suit).

Tycho- So we have 5 more to go, can you give us a heads up on the remaining Battles? How about a brief review of the past winners and losers?

Well, the upcoming fights are supposed to be surprises! Tune in every late Thursday night / Friday morning for the next one!

There is one remaining lightweight match - next week. But it's a good one!

There's another in the midsize category.

There's one final Dog Fight in the preliminaries (Classic Star Wars starfighter matchup).

And there will be two Episode 2 fights to close it up with the Preliminaries, but I'm allowing adequate time for everyone to purchase these vehicles.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As to a recap of the last 10 fights:

1) the X-wing beat the TIE Fighter
2) Sebulba outraced Anakin Skywalker
3) the AT-AT crushed the Snowspeeder
4) Luke's Landspeeder outmaneuvered the Flash Speeder
5) the TIE Interceptor blasted the A-wing
6) the Millennium Falcon outran the Naboo Royal Starship
7) the AT-ST stomped on the T-16
8) the 74-Z Speederbike swept the S-Swoop
9) the N-1 Fighter made a mess of the Droids
10) Slave-One preyed on the Outrider

The closest fight was the Falcon versus the Starship

The largest victory proportionate to voting numbers was the AT-ST.

The largest win by a percentage went to the old Slave-One.

Personally, I supported most of those victorious so far, exceptions being that I liked the Flash Speeder and the A-Wing.

What about you guys? Any victories contested?

How are you guys (who are just coming in) voting between the Y-wing and Vader's TIE?

This is going to be a close one!

Y-wing all the way. It is the best SW ship of all time and the toy does it a lot of justice. I like the molded in droid and the lame pilot. Vader's Tie is so boring looking and the green missiles are retarded. They so don't match the rest of the ship.

Come on Y-wing!

You know: my Vader's TIE came with gray missles. I'm looking at it right now.

Do I have an earlier or later variation?

NiktosRule
04-12-2002, 03:58 PM
I didn't know that a gray missile version existed. I don't actually have it but a friend of mine does and his as green missiles. I despise the green missiles. I do plan on eventually buying the ship though.

I actually voted for the T-16 over the AT-ST. I just don't like the AT-ST, and the T-16 was a surprise when it came out. I liked how its 2 vehicles in one, I've always been a sucker for those types of things.

Other than that, I think I agree with all the winners so far.

I'm gonna go with the Vader's TIE, it's always impressed me and the Y-wing has those worthless landing legs which cave after a little while. The Y-wing is also way out of scale and looks squat, and the droid dome is weak.

chrisc
04-12-2002, 05:18 PM
How many vehicles do they make in scale size. Imagine the price tag if they did. The Y-Wing and Power FX Xwing are the closest ive seen in scale size

JediTricks
04-12-2002, 06:25 PM
The Y-wing is nowhere near scale, it's like 1/2 scale or possibly more.

The Power F/X X-wing, Vader's TIE, the T-16 Skyhopper, Anakin's Podracer, the Snowspeeder, the Droid Starfighter(s), the A-wing, the Naboo Fighter, and the Jedi Starfighter are all in-scale or dang close. The Snowspeeder may actually be a little too big, but it's a tough call, I won't fault it personally.

Wolfwood319
04-12-2002, 06:55 PM
Yeah, the Y-Wing and B-Wing are really quite out of scale. The Y-Wing is bigger than the X-Wing in the movies, now compare it to the Power FX X-Wing. Notice the difference? And I think the B-Wing is supposed to even be bigger than the Y-Wing. So very few ships are in scale. If we got most ships scale size, the costs would be double or triple what they are now.

Tycho
04-12-2002, 08:08 PM
I was always under the impression that the TIE Fighters were bigger than the rebel ships.

The best comparison shots I can think of are during the trench run, when you actually see Vader and his wingmen behind the Y-wings, or the shots of the TIEs vs X-wings in space, especially when one gets on Biggs' tail.

So if the regular TIE Fighter should be larger than an F/X X-wing, shouldn't Vader's TIE, with shields and hyperdrive, be larger than even that?

Scale becomes even more difficult to talk about...

Here are the ship sizes, according to the official Star Wars website. Just gives us some idea how badly scaled some of these ships are:

Droid Starfighter: 3.6 meters long
TIE Fighter: 6.3 meters long
TIE Bomber: 7.8 meters long
Jedi Starfighter: 8 meters long
Vader's TIE Fighter: 9.2 meters long
A-Wing Starfighter: 9.6 meters long
TIE Interceptor: 9.6 meters long
Naboo Starfighter: 11 meters long
X-Wing Starfighter: 12.5 meters long
Y-Wing Starfighter: 16 meters long
B-Wing Starfighter: 16.9 meters long
Imperial Shuttle: 20 meters long
Slave 1: 21.5 meters long
Dash Rendar's Outrider: 26.7 meters long
Millenium Falcon: 26.7 meters long
Queen's Royal Starship: 76 meters long
Rebel Transport: 90 meters long

I've got to vote for the Y-wing. Reasons: I think its more accurate, it's got a great paint job, comes with a figure and the proton torpedo (bomb). All the extra weapons on the TIE bother me, it's cool that is all new but still. And the first POFT2 Vader is just as lame as the Y-wing pilot. And I love the proton torpedo. This is the coolest feature from the vintage Y-wing.

The Snowspeeder and Cloud Car toys are actually slightly larger than the movie scale, because if you look at the actual models you'll see that the pilots really are too big. Sure someone could fit in the Snowspeeder like that; but only if he had no legs.

I think the only vehicles that are truly to scale with the movies are the Speeder Bike and Power FX X-Wing. A-wing and Landspeeder are pretty close but are a little too stubby.

The worst scaled vehicles are the Falcon, Queens Starship and the AT-AT. With the AT-AT being the most distorted and misshapen of them all.

Well, this is getting to be a great discussion!

The Battle of the Machines can provoke all kinds of challenges it seems!

Keep it up. This is great!

Meanwhile, JarJar: thank you for your statistics.

However, they really do nothing to solve this issue.

A TIE fighter's vertical height to its solar pannels defines a lot of its size. So it's not longer than an X-wing? That doesn't mean it's not bigger!

As to the B-wing - they certainly gave that ships fuseledge width or height (if flying in attack mode). It's length as measured from the same direction as an A-wing, would actually make it a shorter distance than even the smallest Rebel fighter.

Those stats, as kind as it was to provide them, really didn't help as much as I'd hoped some info like that could.

We need MORE detailed information about the ships' demensions than that, apparently!

Thanks for trying JarJar. No cheese.

I know, not that much of a help. But it gives us some idea of proper scale, even if its not perfect. :( It definatly proves that the Y-Wing is really out of scale with most of the ships.

But anywayyyyy, I voted for Vader's TIE. In a head to head battle, Vader's guns can be aimed more precisely than can the Y's rotating turret. While the Y has a cool bomb underneath, it is only useful in this case if Vader has to land. The cool green color of the missles doesn't hurt either.

Apart from battle-worthiness, the updated TIE is about the best resculpt yet from Hasbro since they were Kenner. The Y could stand a better more to scale redesign. And to echo a previous statement, it wouldn't hurt the TIE to have a detailed cockpit. Regardless, the TIE wins hands down.

I have both of the ships. I voted for the Y-wing.From a collectors point of view I can say it was alot harder to find the Y-wing then it was to find darth Vaders. It took me almost 2 months to find the Y-wing. I found darths at a garage sale still in the box for $15.00.The Y-wing cost me about 3 times as much!!

Hmm, I was delighted when I opened my Vader TIE to find that it didn't have the green missiles. I just assumed it was a style change after the package was designed . . . but I see some of you have green missiles.

Anyway, I'm voting for Vader's TIE. Reason enough is bigbarada's complaint regarding the droid socket. That was one of my favorite play features as a kid, R5-D4 was finally so useful! :D (If this were vintage DV TIE vs. vintage Y, it's the Y-Wing all the way.)

I have to say, this was a lot tougher than some of the other rounds. I like both ships very much. The Y-wing is one of the best original toys they made, and it looks even better in it's newer version (even though there's no droid socket). Vaders TIE is THE best toy designed from scratch for the POTF2 line. I had to revert to a 6 year old to make up my mind. In the end I chose the Y-wing. With all the action features it's just more fun to play with, and after all, we're voting on which is the better TOY, not which is the better ship in the film.
