View Full Version : SW vs. ST!!!
04-20-2002, 02:57 PM
I came up with this as an homage to 5 of 9, apparently our resident Star Trek fan. (It's okay...I'm one too. :D)
Who would win, Star Wars or Star Trek?
-the Death Star
-big, powerful ships
-more advanced technology
-warp drive is way faster than hyperdrive
So what does everyone think? Also, who is more useless, the Red-Shirts from ST or the Tantive IV Rebel Troopers of SW?

I dunno. I think hyperdrive is faster than warp. At the end of ESB, we see that the rebel fleet actually leaves the galaxy that they were in. In Star Trek, space is so huge that the Delta quadrant, which is as far as any federation ship fleet has gotten, takes decades to traverse at the highest warp factor. And none of the territory in ST goes beyond the boundaries of the milky way. Now there have been rare instances of super-beings or strange happening where a ship does go much farther and faster than any SW ship could hope to travel, but those are very episodic in nature.
The modern conveniences of ST are more advanced than SW. Replicators, holodecks, & transporters. But none of that would win a war. Medical technology is also several times more advanced in ST. Regular humans can apparently live several hundred years. In SW, that so far has not been shown to happen. You only live that long if your species lives a long time (such as Yoda). Also, you apparently cant even get scarred or lose limbs or eyes in ST. They can all pretty much be replaced without the use of robotic replacements. Replacing eyes is still apparently artificial, but I don't remember anybody losing a limb that they couldn't get back in ST. If you lose an eye in SW, your only option is to put a patch over that sucker. Scarring is also quite permanent.
Weapon technology is about on par. In SW:ANH, blasters had kill and stun settings. Ship to ship weapons and sheilds are also about the same in capability. Sheilds have their role in SW, but on most ships they either don't exist due to expense, or they aren't powerful enough to withstand the weapons used against them. When the Death Star II had its sheilds up in RotJ, the rebel fleet didnt even bother to shoot at the sheilds to weaken them, because apparently they were simply too powerful to weaken. Both universes also share some ship technology such as tractor beams, cloaking devices (a rare, but present technology in the SW universe), and energized torpedo weapons.
Star Wars ships are also many times bigger in several instances. Star Destroyers, espeicially Super Star Destroyers, dwarf just about anything in the ST universe save for the occassional episodic alien ship.
The jedi aren't exactly that powerful in the SW universe, as by the time of the OT, they were all but wiped out by the empire. Blasters win the wars.
Ships, weapons. and speed, the SW universe outranks the ST universe. Modern convenience/medical technology, the ST universe outranks SW.

Actually, warp is MUCH faster than hyperdrive. In ESB, they could have just been in the outer rim...and therefore it might have been a different galaxy they were looking at. The ST galaxy is based upon our own, while the SW galaxy is apparently much smaller.
Anyway, hyperdrive is something like twice the speed of light, while Warp Factor 9 is something like 3,053 times the speed of light.

i remember that on one episode they went to warp 20, didn't they?

SW because st sucks big time!!!!!!!!! I really, really hate st, more than I hate aurra sing. Most of it is probably due to the numerous attacks on SW by st fans. I don't consider SW to be science fiction at all. Sure there are space ships, and cloning, and blasters, and whatnot, but those things are incidental. st, in my opinion, is a haven for wannabe intellectuals who like to make themselves sound intelligent by muttering nonsensical technobabble. This one jerk at work was always doing this, I'd like to punch his fat face right in!! He once told me "Star Wars is for the layman" as if there is some sort of hierachchy of movies of which st is the top. Please, I saw some of those movies and I could pull a better one out of any bodily orfice in about 2 minutes. Just a bunch of crap to cater to Comic Book Guy type, fat, lazy, computer geeks who are so bitter with the world that they have to invent their own. I know a lot of good decent people like st, and that they are not all like those jerks, and I don't mean to insult anyone here but I really don't think that SW and st can be compared. I mean that's like comparing the Smurfs and NYPD Blue. SW is more of an escapist, nostalgic, even introspective to a certain degree, type of series, while st seems, to me anyway, to be some sort of prediction of how great the future is going to be. I find science fiction to be so preachy and arrogant. I hate it, but what I hate most is when people compare SW with it. I know I'm gonna get in trouble for replying to this thread.........

i strongly agree that Star Trek sucks big time!!
04-21-2002, 12:35 AM
Yeah, STAR WARS all the way!
04-21-2002, 12:49 AM
Star Wars wins because Star Trek has Kirk.
 :crazed: :crazed:

STAR WARS would kick STAR TREK's arse! Star Wars might have a holiday special but it's still alot better than Star Trek. Star Trek doesn't have Jedi Knights or lightsabers. All they have are strange men with pointy ears (no, not Yoda, he's cool!).

It's good to see EVERYONE supporting SW. I'm so proud of you all...I knew you'd come through. I have foreseen it. The Force can be a powerful ally...:D:D:D
04-21-2002, 12:26 PM
I hate SW too!...no wait wrong forum... ;)
seriously ST sucks big time - it's soooo boring

It may sound strange; but I find SW a little more realistic compared to ST. Both have many different races and cultures interacting together. The difference is, ST has most of them working together toward the common good; SW has most of them invading peaceloving worlds, commiting genocide and selling each other out for personal gain and profit. Like I said, SW is more realistic.
However, ST:TNG remains my all time favorite TV show. I think it was a mistake for Rick Berman to cancel TNG to make movies. ST was designed as a weekly TV program and it should have stayed that way.
I personally like both a lot. I love TNG. It was my favorite Sci-Fi tv show until I was introduced into babylon 5. Babylon 5 blew it away in just about every way possible. I honestly believe it's the best Sci-Fi television ever written. I love all 3 series deeply, but I suppose if I had to choose, I would go with SW. But, I wouldn't say either sucked. Well, Voyager sucked. But I enjoy them all. I just wish the B5 figures weren't sooooo crappy.

I couldn't agree more with both Bosskman and bigB.Star Trek is so hung up on itself and how Great humanity is it gets old fast.
Star Wars may very well be for the "layman" and thats fine by me.At least myself as a layman can tell the difference between fiction and fact. There are alot of ST fans that treat all the technobabble as fact or future fact which is just plain stupid IMHO.
For me Star Wars deals with humaninity as it is and will be ,not some utopian nonsense future.Sorry brainiacs Star Trek is not real and never will be.Star Wars doesn't pretend to be anything but a fantasy story with underlying morals. Not trying to tell everyone what their morals should be to be enligghtened.
Star Wars would hand ST it's *** in a fight period.
Fire at will

Dryanta, I couldn't have said it better myself, st both sucks and blows! I HATE IT! AAAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I'am both a major Warsie and a major Trekkie but I think SW would win. Here's the reasons:
Hyperdrive is faster than warp;
With WARP drive, it warps space and basically lets you slip through it in a warp field which others can get into your warp field if they can match your warp speeds.
Hyperdrive technically folds space by creating a direct tunnel from one place to another, kind of like a wormhole but not, therefore making it faster because WARP goes the long way while hyperdrive shortens the distance. And ships cannot enter the same hyperdrive tunnel, or at least it is unkown if they can. If watch ROTJ you see all the Rebel fleet ships have to use their own hyperdrive tunnels rather than joining in one huge one.
Starfleet has photon torpedos, quantum torpedos, and phasers.
Basic weapons for SW are proton torpedos and blasters.
Star Trek weapons always seem to work on frequencies which can be blocked by a shield modulation being on a higher frequency. Blasters do not work on frequencies, they blaster bolts are charged energy bolts.
Torpedo vs. Torpedo, whiile Star Trek ships can block photon torpedos, they would not be able to block proton torpedos because they do not work the same way as a photon torpedo. A photon torpedo's energy blast would be able to be deflected from shields while a proton torpedo is basically like the difference between a gun and a phaser.
Also, Star Wars ships are much bigger and while they do not have as sufficient shields as Star Trek, their structual intregrity is much more sufficient plus while Star Wars ships aren't very useful against blaster rounds from ships bigger than them, they probably could block phaser and photon torpedos if they had the right shield strengh and modulation.
Basically Star Wars technology is not as realistic as Star Trek is, but in an odd way they're both quite realistic in their own sense but Star Wars' technology is more advanced than Star Treks because hyperdrive is more stronger than Warp.
Btw, about that warp "20" thing, the highest warp any ship has been really able to reach is warp 9. Warp 10 is infinite speed which so far the Ent-D was able to actually go past but because of the alien being and a Voyager shuttle was able to go at warp 10.. which I don't really accept since it was just a shuttle and it shouldn't be that powerful. And if you want to go really in depth, ships like Voyager may have Warp 9 capability, but their cruising speeds are around Warp 7 since they can't sustain top speeds for a long time.
04-21-2002, 04:14 PM
So LTBasker, hyperdrive might be more advanced than warp but warp IS a higher multiple of the speed of light than hyperdrive is. I know this.
04-21-2002, 04:45 PM
Speed doesn't really apply to hyperdrive though. In WARP you propel yourself through a Warped space field to a destionation, but with hyperspace, you do still propel yourself but instead it's kinda like it shortens the distance by making a wormhole type of tunnel which you go through and instead of going in a straight line, it folds up the line therefore shortening the distance. It's not instant, but definitely faster than WARP. If you've ever seen Event Horizon, then Sam Neill's character gives a good description.
04-21-2002, 05:22 PM
Yes, I saw it. The Event Horizon ship looked a lot like a Nebulon-B frigate of SW...:frus:
He said, "Normally, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line." Then he folds the paper. "But in actuality, the shortest distance is...zero."

Except for the next statement, I'm going to avoid this thread like the plague because we've all been down this road before.
(the next statement:) I've been a Trekkie since before there was a SW and there's no comparison between the 2. SW ships don't even have deflector shields or transporters and their weapons are laser/gas-based, primative and easily defeatable by Trek's standards. They are different animals that are written with different ideals and points of view, it's not like comparing green against red apples, it's like comparing green apples against chocolate milk.
04-21-2002, 09:59 PM
I have always been amazed at why people like to compare the two seeing as they are quite different from each other. However I'd have to say that SW would kick ST a**. SW also has Jedi, which are able to do things that normal people such as the ST Federation are unable to do. However, one thing that ST has going for it is the ability to Time Travel. If Obi-Wan was smart enough then he could have just Time Travelled back in time to before they met Anakin and somehow repaired the future by not meeting Anakin and he could have also killed Senator Palpatine, who is really the one to deal with in the first place.
However, again, the opening statement of SW is "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away..." so SW technology was WAY more advanced than ST because ST takes place in the future.
I use to love watching ST:TNG and it is my favorite ST series of the 5 we have. I still think SW is better than ST. Plus I sometimes feel like ST fans think that SW fans are less than them because ST is "superior" to SW. But when it comes down to it, look at the box office. SW makes a ton of more money that ST and IMO has a larger fan base. Although I don't see why ST fans can't love both. I like ST, but I don't consider myself a Trekkie, Trekker, Trekken, or whatever they call themselves. I'm much more into SW.

I like Star Wars better but Star Trek is good too. I don't get all you people who say it has to either be one or the other.
04-24-2002, 04:35 PM
I'm a much bigger SW fan than ST, but I still like Trek. As far as movies go, SW wins hands down. They're a much bigger deal. But I think that's all you can directly compare. ST is based in reality with at least some pseudoscientific principles. SW is pure science fantasy, NOT fiction. The scientific usage is very minimal. JT's right. They are like apples and oranges.
That being said, I'd still like to point out the following...
Chewie would whip Worf in a fair fight
Stormtroopers die better than red-shirted ensigns
C-3PO is 1000x gayer than Data
Amidala would beat Troi in a beauty contest (although Troi would beat Amidala in a hot dog eating contest)
The Death Star would vaporize the Enterprise in 1 nanosecond.
:) :) :) :)
04-24-2002, 05:23 PM
SW's only superpowerful alien race is the Yuuzhan Vong, but ST has the Q, the Borg, and Species 8472.
ST's ships are definitely superior.
But in terms of personal/man-to-man combat, SW would whoop ST and send it back up Gene Roddenberry's butt. :D
