Adam over at Yakface says that he has learned that we will never get figures of the Tonnika Sisters.
WHY!!!!!

I would think that unless you are someone extremely famous and you appear in someone's movie as one of their characters that that person would own the rights to the image of you as that character.
Why didnt someone have them sign some kind of release form?
Why cant/ wont they sign one now.
Wouldnt you think that they would be honored/flattered to have themselves made into action figures.

Does anyone have the real answers?
Im tired of these answers we get from Hasbro on things.
I remember that all that was said was something about them not signing something way back when.

Isnt there something that can be done??

What are your thoughts on this??

I posted this over in another thread but I'll be glad to do it here as well.I read somewhere that Lucas owns the characters but not the actor's likeness. The story revolved around Sabastian Shaw(Anakin ROTJ) having died before the film was even released. His family had to approve the use of his likeness for Kenner and Later Hasbro..I also believe Harrison Ford commented on this too.Same with any ilustrations of their likeness.I'm sure they all did sign a release of some kind, but it has a loophole for the use of their likeness.Royalties or something?Would I be flattered if it were me? Yes.But for what ever reason(money?) they are not.
I think if Hasbro were to alter the likeness at all to get around the consent it would end up in court, drag on forever,we wouldn't get the figures and Hasbro would pass it's law expenses on to us.So as much as I'd like the figures I don't want to split the law fees with you all to get them.
Just an idea, could we all get together, find these ladies and present them with a huge petion requesting they allow this?Would that appeal to them more than Hasbro has been able to? I don't know just a thought.

It doesn't bother me really that the Tonnika sisters won't be made, but I really wish they would make more female figures in general. I know they don't sell as well as male figures, but still...

It's funny that the female figures supposedly Don't see as well. Because in each and every wave that has them it's the female figures that nobody can ever find.

You guys want a female figure, well Yarna D'al Gargan is the female to choose. I want her made. Come on, that is the female figure we all need.

sometimes, but not necessarily. Padmes not moving any faster than other figs. and Shmi Skywalker & Leia Bespin figures were all over the pegs in stores here in Dallas.

Saga Padme and POTJ Bespin Leia are dripping off the pegs around here. Deluxe Leia with Sail Barge Cannon is too. I dunno about the female figures not selling well though, I think it just depends on the character. If Hasbro reissued some new badass version of Mara Jade I bet it would fly off the pegs. Then you have characters like Shmi Skywalker...sorry, just not a very interesting character or figure. Plus there just aren't a heck of a lot of dominant female characters in the SW series aside from a few. There are many more prominent, exciting male characters, and thus they make for more desirable (in most peoples' eyes) figures.

That being said I'm always up for more Cantina patrons/background filler-type figures. I'd sign some sort of petition. Even though 99% of web petitions accomplish absolutely nothing. Anybody want to organize one?

Next to an accurate Dr. Evazan all i want to complete my Cantina scene is the Tonnika Twins, so make 'em Hasbro! I'll sign every petition for these two ladies.

Can't Hasbro just put different likenesses on the characters? McFarlane toys didn't have permission to use Arnold's likeness; but that didn't stop them from making a T2 version of his character with a different face. It seems that this would be much easier than trying to track these two women down.

Good call B,
Hasbro made a generic Bespin Guard (I know, I know, it should be generic :D ) but they still didn't hesitate to use their own face that they put on the pic. They could get by with just doing general females in those outfits, outfits which LFL should have the rights too.

Can we draw any comparisons to the POTJ card design with the generic Obi-Wan image?

(in best Darth Sidious voice) Uhhh, I want that petition signed....
Sounds like the Tonnika's wont grace our collection, unless Hasbro pulls some strings or something. Oh well, its ok I guess. I wouldnt mind seeing them, but no need to cry over spilled milk.

The bespin guard is an excellent example.I would like to see Hasbro alter the face sculpt and get them out.My earlier post really should have been noted as a speculation. They'd be in court saying"we want our cut, everybody knows it's really us!I really don't know.Tracking them down would probably be way to difficult anyway, just a thought.
If the likeness is changed enough to get away from being identifiable as these two women, how collectors would be on all the forums everywhere screaming and hollering about"These are crap sculpts, they don't look anything like them!"
I can see it now.I don't agree with alot of what Hasbro does, but at the same time can they really EVER win with us?

Tonnika sisters dont wanna have figures made?
Who cares? We dont need them.
The real reason is probably they both ended up being porn actresses or somthing that lucas didnt want to have involved...

I still REALLY don't think any legal issues with the actresses or their likenesses would ever preclude the Tonnika sisters from being made into figures. Hasbro knows we want them, and could easily use generic likenesses and achieve the same effect. I think the only reason we haven't gotten them yet has much more to do with the fact that Hasbro knows we're gonna want them packed together, and they have no other venue for such a release besides the Deluxe line, which has always been limited to a couple items per assortment. We'll see them eventually.

Please forgive my ignorance, but....

who are the Tonnika sisters?

The Tonnika Sisters are sitting at the bar in the Cantina Scene in ANH. I can't remember if you see them right after R2 and C3P0 get kicked out or right after Ben chops Pondo Baba's hand.

Here is a picture of the two sisters, from Decipher's CCG game. It came out back in 1995. I consider it strange they didn't throw a fuss over their likeness on the card. Or we never heard anything, if they did. :)

Now that you've brought up the card, I'm kind of wondering where this idea that there are likeness issues came up. Forgive me if this has been covered already. I'm tending to doubt the validity of such a notion. Their likenesses ahve actually appeared in dozens of products before. True they were mostly in books, and it's entirely possible that only their likenesses in print are covered, but I think you see what I'm getting at. As I've stated before, I really do think that the only reason we don't have figures of them yet is because Hasbro just hasn't gotten around to it. I honestly don't think there are any likeness issues holding these characters back. As I've also stated, Hasbro could very easily throw a couple generic faces on the figures and the problem would be solved. I doubt there are many (I do realize there will definitely be SOME!) who would complain much if their faces don't look EXACTLY like the actresses from the film.

Hey roojay,
The notion comes from me responding to another thread where this came up.I read an artical about Sabatian Shaw's family having to approve the use of his image,he died before ROTJ was released.I also remember where Harrison ford commented on it.I saw him on Rosie Odonnel a few years ago.She had one of the 12" figures on her desk.He said he hated it,and that "the Toy company" sends them (Mark Carrie ect) prototypes for their final approval before it can be mass produced. Now they are much bigger stars than the two second wonders but Sabatian Shaw was an unknown too.If decipher wants to use an Image from the film LFL owns those. If it's from film.Everything else has to be approved for use.
I very much like the idea of different head sculpts,I still wonder if the actresses would take it to court on the grounds of it being an obvious attempt to skirt around the approval issue.Hasn't this happened before in other mediums?Copyright infringment cases? It all boils down to money.Best I can do guys.Take it for what you will.

I'd love to see the Tonnika sisters made but if it would bring hasbro in a problem and if they would get accused for something dumb as likeness-problems they should better not do them
you guys know of the lawsuit that tony twist started against mcfarlane for using his name in the comics and he won and got about 10 million dollars (or sumthing like that) from todd? that was just about making money not about copyrights or anything else

I don't believe Shaw died until the early 90s, so he probably approved the vintage POTF spirit figure. But the POTF2 removable helmet Vader might have required his family's consent. :)

I think that was a big rumor that was going around about him. Sebastian Shaw actually didn't die until December 23rd, 1994 at the age of 89 years old. I think the story was that he didn't know anything about Star Wars, when he was cast. Not that he wasn't told who the charecter was. Sadly just like Peter Cushing he didn't live long enough to see a figure of his charecter, other then the vintage one. :)

Quite frankly, if I'd been around as an actor when the vintage figures were being produced I'd have slapped an embago on being produced that way as a figure. The likenesses were so way off that they were an insult to all concerned. I know the technology just wasn't there back then but even so they were absolutely hideous looking toys. The Women who played the sisters must have seen the figures and thought "NO WAY JOSE!" and have had no truck with toy figures since and probably still think they all look as bad. If hasbro were to do a really good sculpt hardcopy and show them that then maybe they would change their minds. If that's what the issue is. If it's about how much money they get paid for the use of their images then it's probably just that Hasbro consider them too expensive. It could simply be a case of not knowing how on earth to find them to get permissions. Or maybe it's that they don't like the idea of spotty teenage boys drooling over a dolly of them dressed in a skintight catsuit. Or maybe given that the cantina scenes were thrown together out of anything and everything in Stuart Freeborns cupboard, the costumes and make up don't actually belong to Lucas and were borrowed for the filming. Just some thoughts I had....

Oh, and I'd buy two if they made one. Can't see any point in making both of them if they're identical.
