There's a wonderful book called Star Wars: The magic of Myth that was sold at the travelling Smithsonian exhibit but can be purchased at just about any bookstore. It talks about different influences of mythology on Star Wars including Authurian legend, early Japanese and Chinese cultures, westerns and yes, even WWII. In fact, before George had the special effects done for the Death Star battle in ANH he had old WWII fighter plane footage cut into the movie so the studio execs would have a feel for how the battle would look. I highly recommend it to any avid Star Wars fans. (the book, not the old footage)...

I wish they had done the same for E1... sadly it was just zoom, blast, boom. :(
The blasters props and such were made from WWII guns. I'm not sure if any of the gun parts were from guns of other eras but I'd guess WWII props might've been more cost effective since alot of the same guns had to be made for cheap so they probably didn't cost that much in the 70's, especially to movies.

Ep1 was based on another historical event in which a Queens kingdom is invaded and she is forced to sign a treaty to legitimize their invasion.
I don't know the exact specifics but a majority of the events in Star Wars films are based on real world history with a SW twist.

Check out the "Jabba's Skiff Guards" thread here in the Classic Trilogy section for many references based on names (but some images, too). EP's suggestion about the Magic of Myth book is right on. Some examples:
Samurai armor for Vader/robes for Jedi
Orange WWI (WWII?) Allied pilot suits for Rebel pilots
Flying Fortress gun tagets for Falcon's gun wells
Nazi officers for Imperial outfits
LOTS of weapons (Han's DL-44: Mauser?, Dengar's rifle: German machine gun?, Greedo's gun: ??, etc.)
WWI British helmets for Rebels' Endor helmets
Etc.
Etc.
Researching Star Wars is my part-time job! ;)
