My nod goes to Goodfellas. What do you guys think?

There are a lot of movies I like more than Star Wars;

Godfather I & II
Jaws
Jurassic Park
FOTR
Evil Dead 2
Spider-Man
Fight Club
T2

I'd have to give "The Godfather'' a nod as the greatest though.

Indian Jones and the Last Crusade.

The Matirix comes in third, but the race isn't close.

I think the Matrix was designed for people who loved StarWars as kids, and have since grown up with it. I can't explain why, but the Matrix appeals so much to me....and I can watch it over and over like the SW movies. I don't get much enjoyment out of watching many movies repeatedly, in fact maybe ONLY SW and the matrix. Oh, and Blade Runner. Wow. And HEAT, oh, and maybe The Color of Money and Top Gun and X-Men and Clerks.....okay sorry. There's a few out there.

I can't really pick a single best movie, since I like a lot of different movies for a lot of different reasons.

For now I'd go with Fellowship of the Ring, since it is the other trilogy I am excited about.

I'm not much of a movie buff, so the movies I really like appeal to me for my own reasons. I very rarely listen to what critics have to say. I know that movies like Godfather, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, etc are supposed to be the best movies ever; but I have seen Godfather and Casablanca each once and have no desire to ever see them again. So how good can they possibly be?

"Critics choice," to me, has become synonymous with "boring and pretentious."

"Critics choice," to me, has become synonymous with "boring and pretentious."

My sentiments exactly. Though their are exceptions to every rule, "Saving Private Ryan" being one of several to this one. That's one of the few movies that actually stood up to it's critical acclaim IMO.

B, a great deal of my favoriute flicks have been critically panned, actually The Godfather films are probably among the few that I actually agree with "the critics" on.

There's just something about me and Mafia films . . . I know the popular theory is that people like to romanticize the life of organized crime because they are too weak/afraid to live on the edge of society themselves. I don't know that I fit that mold completely, because I can't say that I daydream of getting away with murder and racketeering. In real life, I am horrified by mob stories that I've seen and heard but in the context of a movie (or TV show like the Sopranos) I really get into the characters and all the gray areas. Okay, so maybe I do fit that mold! :crazed:

CaptainSolo, dare I assume you like other mob flix? Or just Goodfellas? Casino and Gotti rank up there for me . . . there are a lot of good ones.

I'm not a fan of mob flicks per say, but I enjoy them and have seen "Casino", which is my second favorite mob movie. There's just something about Joe Pesci and his repeated delivery of the "F-word"! Behind "Goodfellas", my favorite movies are "The New Jersey Saga" ("Clerks","Mallrats","Chasing Amy","Dogma", and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"), and "Ghost World", which is an EXCELLENT movie. I recommend it to everyone. Steve Buscemi is at his best!!

Other than Star Wars, my favourite movie has got to be either Indian Jones and the Last Crusade, or The Matrix.

Saving Private Ryan was an excellent movie; but I didn't think that the critics liked it. The only good review I remember reading was from the Star & Stripes Army newspaper.

Definitely one of the best war-movies ever made, it completely revived the genre which I was beginning to fear was dying out.

Aside from SW, LOTR and Indiana Jones which are unique in their respective genres. My favorite movies usually end up being war-movies:
Ryan
All Quiet on the Western Front
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Midway
Gallipoli
Memphis Belle
The Great Escape
Kelly's Heroes
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket

However, I hate the movie Patton! Not because it was a bad movie; but because Patton himself was such a bastard in real life, he should never have been immortalized with a movie. If he hadn't been relieved of duty the Jews would have gone from Nazi concentration camps to American concentration camps, because he believed that they were "lower than animals" and "would spread across the countryside like locusts" if not kept under constant military guard.

Its hard to mention them all, but my fav non-SW films would be:
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Matrix
Austin Powers 1&2
James Bond (most of them)
SE7EN
Gladiator
Black Hawk Down
LOTR
X-Men
Kevin Smith Movies

I am sure I will think of more after I post this, but I will leave it at that.

I don't really know what the best is. I have my favorites though, but I'm only going to post one here right now:

Highlander.

The first one. Chris Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown...
2 and 3 were okay and Endgame sucked, but the first Highlander is just great...awesome :).

End :).

bigbarada, I love your choices in movies. I too have a passion for war movies, preferably the older stuff. My absolute favs are Midway, Tora Tora Tora and the Great Escape. I would also add 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, Purple Heart and Bridge Over the River Kwai (staring everyones favorite Jedi) to your list.

The absolute worse war themed movie of all time is Pearl Harbor. I won't even go into all the reasons here but I'm sure you'd agree.

Favorite non-war movies:

Aliens
Alien
Dark City
Monty Python SftHG/LoB

I know I already posted on this, but you know what's friggin terriffic? The Lion King. No kidding. At an hour 10min, there is more story, more pain, loss and suffering followed by ultimate redemption than just about any other movie Ive seen. Yes Im a father of young children. I know many other people would not sink so low as watching a show like this without kids, but I DARE - no DOUBLE DARE you to watch The Lion King and tell me it's not amazing.
