View Full Version : "New" slang that makes me laugh...

Why is someone that you are dating or keen on called "shorty"? Whenever I hear that I think the person is a midget or something... maybe even a jawa.
The other word is "Peeps". Whenever I hear THAT one, I think of those Easter marshmallow chicks.
So here I am in my car, listening to the radio...
"Shorty you're my angel. You're my darlin' baby. Closer than my Peeps you are to me..."
I picture a guy with a jawa stuck to him, surrounded by a ring of those candies...
Just plain insane. :crazed:

LOL, I know what song that is. :D
I dunno what's with the short thing, I guess since he's talking about a girl... As for the peeps thing, I'd guess it's just a spin-off of people. ;)
If you want to hear some very odd slang, learn leet/1337 speak. It's quite odd...

Yes... I know about the "peeps" thing... but it sounds hysterical to me...
I've heard "shorty" used for both male and female...
what is "leet/1337"?
Forhekset
06-03-2002, 01:06 PM
Hrm, I thought a "shorty" was your kid, and the person you were keen on was your "boo". Like, "My boo be havin' my shorty" or something like that. :D I'm not really up on my urban street slang....
L33t/l337-speak is the slang that "elite hackers" aka l337 h4x0r5, aka "script kiddies" use. And in case you don't know, a script kiddy is some bonehead who knows how to perform a really common, not difficult to pull off attack, such as a simple DoS (denial of service), and goes around proclaiming his "eliteness" to the entire Internet (ever been on IRC?). Hence, elite-speak (l337-speak). :) It's basically just substituting numbers and other non-alphabetical characters in your words...pretty stupid really.

The funniest thing I've noticed is how, when a word gets turned into "slang", with the commensurate new meaning and so on, it invariably is the opposite to what the first meaning was.
e.g. Bad=Good, Mad=Lots/Great, Bomb=good (When I say something was a bomb, it don't mean good) Dope= Right on!! (used to mean a dummy, so to me it seems just like saying "that's stupid, man")
I just don't get it- I mean, english is weird enough as it is, right?? Why do kids have to keep rewriting it??
It was bad enough when , as a young lad, my friends and I totally devalued the word "awesome" by applying it to stuff like new chocolate bars etc. Maybe this new, opposite slang is the only way the youth can go, since we already took all the words for "great" and "lots/many/large" and made them into silly clichees.
Sorry kids, we didn't know what we were doing either (although it started to come clear once, for "freshness" sake, we started using the word "mega" for EVERYTHING)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Can you imagine someone saying "Word to your Mother!" to you 30 years ago?
Them's fightin' words, as far as I'm concerned.
I tend to just ignore the "new" slang words as symbols of ignorance and general decline of our society, but the one trend in recent years that I really picked up on myself is the typing shortcuts that have become so commonplace with all the internet chat we all do these days.
things like ignoring capitalization, using 'prolly' for probably, 'dunno' for I don't know, 'sorta' for sort of, 'IMHO' 'BRB' 'CUL8R' 'MTFBWY' and all the others.....
I have always prided myself on at least attempting to use proper spelling and grammar. But something has changed (evolved?) in my standards when I'm posting here, and in my other informal internet correspondence.
BTW, if you haven't already noticed, start listening to how often the word 'Actually' is used by people.
It must be the most overused word in the English language.
(mabudon, that was NOT intended as a dig to you, personally!)
mabudonicus
06-03-2002, 04:29 PM
Actually, I usually speak in colloquialisms, like I pronounce "gotta" like that, and will reply with no more than "dunno" as written, so I will usually type them out the way I'd say em (see- I say that too) On the net, IMHO et al. just gives me a few more years till my arthritis gets way too bad. At least it's generally the phrase I mean, and not some crazy sarcasm-although the H is kinda Ironic (note the capital) in some cases.........WOOOOOOOOO!!!
I thought the H meant "HUGE" :)

Leet speak was mostly made so that illegal operations could take place over the internet and buffers wouldn't pick it up. Letters would be replaced by numbers and symbols that look like the letters. 1337 = Leet, 1=L 3=E and 7=T.
Mostly used also now to disguise the fact that alot of gamers on gaming and editing boards burst type before they think. :D

In all seriousness, as you can see I don't hesitate to incorporate slang in my vocabulary. Well the one's that I understand at least. And while some of terms might be inappropriate, the majority of the stuff I think is pretty harmless. If you don't overuse the words, as long as you leave them out during the job interviews and off the resumes, and as long as you don't offend anyone (know your audience), it's all good

I'm touched that you edited your post just for mabudon :) I actually(like THAT :) I know exactly what you mean) wasn't defending myself from your statement, it just made me think.
I mean, some slang seems pretty silly, but it can be sort of "contagious". I seem to pick up additions to the lexicon from almost EVERYWHERE. You know, little phrases from stuff like Kung Fu films- Example -I can't seem to stop referring to things that went horribly wrong as someone's "failure at the cave". That is slang just as much as "bling bling", in a way, only it is a VERY regional dialect (as in between people I know well enough). To someone else, it probably sounds ridiculous, or meaningless at the very least (unless you're a SW fan!)
BTW- I think bling-bling refers to that sound they play on TV when you see diamonds or gold sparkling. Just an idea, but it makes sense, as that's the word I use for that SE.

Actually, I got the two pics of the blonde-haired guy off a crappy-looking website called "Mr. Bling-Bling's Ca$h Money Page". :D No kidding.

"I'm Allen representin' tha A-Town projects. People call me all different things, but mainly: BiG SeXy ~ Stunna ~ Mr. Bling Bling ~ H-Bomb ~ A-Dawg ~ GQ...."
"**Bling Bling**"

Both of these slang terms used (or cut from, but intended to be) in SW are from the 1940s and '50s.
Slang evolves faster than actual language because slang is contingent upon which group at that moment finds it "cool" - if you'll pardon my use of slang ;) :D - slang is mostly faddish, though some uses have been incorporated into the actual language over time. Where "dope" used to carry a negative connotation 40 years ago because it was a reference to drugs of all kinds, 40 years before that it referred to sauce and gravy, and now it reflects more of the latter than the former since the former fell out of popular fashion as a reference to drugs (beyond marijuana, which is somewhat of a different issue) over the last 30 years.
Straight up JT, that post was dope!
Tonight I'm having some noodles and dope with my grandmother, and then we're gonna smoke some dope.

You've never heard of bum-rush or "the bum's rush"? It's when you force your way through, into, or out of something very quickly; "the bum's rush" is a pretty old term (yup, it's "old school" :D), it's a "forcible and swift ejection from a place" (like when someone throws a homeless guy out of their restaurant right when da bum walks in the door).
"G" is short for "gangster", which I hope you don't need an explanation for. ;)

I'm with you on that one! It annoys te heck out of me when people online abbreviate words, phrases, and even whole sentences just to avoid having to type them out! That having been said, I'm sure I do it more often than I care to realize! No offense to anyone that does it! ;) It also bugs the crap out of me when people use the word "of" in place of "have"; as in, "It must of been.". Same thing with "prolly" in place of "probably", and when people use the word "irregardless" which a lot of people seem to think means the opposite of what it would actually mean IF it were a real word. I guess that's kind of bad since some people just don't realize they're doing it, but I've always thought it was pretty hilarious! Again, no offense to anyone who does this!

I have a similar story; not that it has much to do with slang at all, but it's still amusing.
A couple years ago someone thought it'd be pretty cool to deface this Buddhist shrine in a nearby city by covering it with graphitti in the form of Satanic messages. Just to further prove his/her ignorance he/she sprayed the name "SANTAN" all over the shrine. Yes...SaNtan.:stupid:

"don't" is a contraction, not slang. ;)
Slang - (noun) A kind of language occurring chiefly in casual and playful speech, made up typically of short-lived coinages and figures of speech that are deliberately used in place of standard terms for added raciness, humor, irreverence, or other effect.
Contraction - (noun) A word, as won't from will not, or phrase, as o'clock from of the clock, formed by omitting or combining some of the sounds of a longer phrase.
So as you can see here, "don't" is a contraction, but "ain't" is slang! :D :crazed: (ok, it's actually a colloquialism ;))
