150 dollars for a non-armor figure?!? Sideshow has definitely lost touch with their market.

I don't know if they've "lost touch" as much as they've "caught up"....either way, it's not good news.
Sideshow has been the American distributor for higher priced sixth (& seventh) scale offerings from other companies for some time now, whose price range hovers near or above $200 each...so $150 is indeed inching closer to that.

If what Sideshow presents for this figure is what we're seeing here with this prototype (big giant "if" ...I know)....the price stings, but will be less painful, considering what the market is bearing now. Will the final figure have the same good textiles, fine cut-n-sew, sharp looking sculpt (not buried under gobs of a bad paint app), wide belt, an effective wash on the two-part boots along with good and solid interchangeable parts and well-working features ?

Hopefully the answer is a big YES on all of these. Sideshow CAN do it...the clones have gotten better with each successive release, the recent Boba Fett is a real stunner (at least I think so). Yes, Sideshow has had a fair share of flubs between proto and production, it's fair to note that both of those other companies have had their fair share of "misses" too.... Sideshow's efforts at giving some value-added additions to this release are commendable ( the light-up saber feature, the alternate portrait).
This is the one version of Kenobi I've been really waiting for (along with a Padawan Skywalker).

I used rewards points to order this (bought the price down to what these figures used to cost some years ago) and I'm hoping this figure is everything the proto is promising....

Wow, that's nutso. There's simply nothing there showing where the money is going with it, I am guessing they are trying to draw in that insanely high dollar amount through the light-up lightsaber (it is permanently attached to a swap-out forearm). This is a $75 figure that Sideshow a year ago would have punched to $90, now it's double what it should be.

The materials, paint, and sculpt don't match Hot Toys quality yet are now HT pricing, there aren't as many accessories (where are the communicator, breather, and hologram projector Qui-Gon came with? Instead we get a million generic hands). Sideshow even has a few 12" Hot Toys figures for around this price - Sucker Punch and Bruce Lee and even Spider-Man 3 and Black Widow from Avengers. There isn't a single thing on the Sideshow figure that looks up to par with HT - the sculpt isn't a home run, the paint even on the prototype looks at best ok, the outfit doesn't seem like it's tailored to the body and doesn't look like it's significantly better than the Qui-Gon one from years ago (a little better, yes, but not significantly so).

JB, you talk about what the market will bear, but compare the sales figures Sideshow had a few years ago before the insane pricejump - how fast exclusives sold through, how few non-exclusives lingered after release, and how larger the runs were - and you'll see the market isn't actually bearing these, Sideshow has driven away that market leaving a more exclusive group because they've priced themselves out of their previous market, and now they're hoping that exclusive group of a thousand or so folks will buy this because they buy everything SW.

My last Sideshow figures: Boba Fett, Cody, Battle Droids, Bly, Lando - and none of them lived up to their prototypes, usually in deco, fit-n-finish, and with Boba also cut-n-sew. I don't find that encouraging. Each one of them misses their cost-to-value ratio for me by small margins, in other words if they were cheaper I wouldn't have minded their flaws as much. 3 out of those 5 also failed QC in at least 1 area which required replacement which doesn't instill me with confidence for purchases (to be fair, my only Hot Toys purchase also had a QC failure which Sideshow replaced). As much as I like Boba, his helmet is the wrong color and the wrong sculpt for the film, his vest is too bulky to be accurate, the chest plates don't line up right on mine at least, the lower outfit doesn't have the same polish as the upper, the cape misses its sew by a small bit, and the body is sloppy - none of which I would have minded at $100 or minded as much at $125, but instead he's $175 and they pretend to justify it with a light-up base nobody wanted... AND mine had a QC issue to boot, it doesn't mean he's terrible but I have a hard time feeling giddy too. I'm confident if I ordered this Obi-Wan it'd have mediocre paint on the hairline at the very least, and I can't say if it happened to anybody else here they'd be surprised.

Anyway, I just find this so frustrating. I want to be on board, but there isn't any way I can justify this purchase.

I bought Qui-Gon new for 50 dollars. That would mean the light up lightsaber arm is worth 100 dollars, which I doubt. Even if figure in a gasoline inflation rate (200%), The figure would still be under $100. This to me, is a company that found a market that it can exploit.

The Snowtrooper is $150, the Tusken is $125, how exactly is this figure better than those? This figure uses a buck body, has no armor, relatively simple outfit even if it is in 3 layers, generic hands, almost no accessories. I can understand some level of inflation, but this is 3 times the price of the first Sideshow Jedi figures from 7 years ago.

Well, the Tusken and bossk are the last figures I'm buying. This has gotten ridiculous. The figures aren't selling well (except ganch) and the bottom line is I purchase these items as an investment. There is no point in buying something that doesn't gain value. Facebook is a better play at his point. I exaggerate of course.

I'm not sure I understand the investment part of your post, I don't think but a few figures in the line has actually gone up in the long run.

I don't want to tear down Sideshow, I just want to understand what's going on and why they think I should be paying that much. I've been with them since day 1 of the SW license, and now here we are triple that range with less to show for it. I don't want the Snowtrooper to be my last figure, but they already priced me 90% out of the line and each figure is a friggin' struggle - naturally each figure also comes RIGHT when it's least convenient (2 days before Comic-Con, a week before Xmas, etc.,).

I've been loyal since day one as well. i still have my exclusive jedi luke. But I have no qualms in bashing them. Because what they are doing is just stupid. Exclusives used to go on the wait list if you didn't get the order in on day one. Bacara exclusive is still in stock. And none of the releases within the last 6 months are on waitlist, except Ganch. Plenty of supply but no demand because their market can't afford it any more. I'm not going to keep these figures forever. Either I'll sell them or my kids will inherit them. There is no point in getting these anymore if I don't at least get the money I spent back when they are sold. How can that happen if sideshow can't even sell them out of their own store? It's getting tougher to justify the expense. The price of one figure will fill a tank of gas three times or can be used to buy two weeks worth of groceries. I've thought about these things and I'm sure others are too. It was fun while it lasted. But I suppose all good thing must come to an end.

I just got an email today about Bacara and Boba Fett and Fox being in stock, so that does help your point. A few years ago, Boba Fett would have sold through in a matter of days for the non-SE, and SEs would be gone in minutes.

I can't imagine selling my collection, but you make a good point - what happens when we're done with these? What did they cost us to keep around while we're enjoying them?

I'm still with Sideshow, but I can see the end of the road coming for my collection, it does seem like this Obi-Wan figure suggests there's no room for collectors with my level of passion yet who aren't wealthy.

Not quite sure what's up with SSC lately...emails abounded about Neyo & the Tusken showing up last week(they ddn't); then a notice they were deducting the final amount yesterday(plus S/H) for Cdmr. Neyo(they didn't).

Yes, it seems that stuff is all over the place there right now....HT Luke delayed yet again (pick your "why" from all kinds of rumors on this one, most notably quality issues), STAP w/ BD showing up for folks(one picture so far...other than the base looking a little tacky, it looks good), Tusken supposedly charging and starting to ship on Friday-with no production pictures of it in sight (10/12), no news on Neyo delay....I got those email notices too and called SSC to shuffle things around a bit to avoid an overload...

When it rains, it pours...as always around this time of year...

Jon, the Tusken email I got on 9/25 was a pre-ship notice for this week's date, you can see that in my story which I'm about to update (as they've moved the date up another day, shipping starts tomorrow), is that not the case with yours? I didn't preorder Neyo so I don't have input on that.

JB, I hadn't heard the STAP shipped, that's surprising. I totally forgot Sideshow used to put up production photos of products before shipping, I've gotten used to not checking anymore for that stuff.

The STAP is on of the things I shifted around, so I'll get some pictures in here, but it might be a while...

If they had gotten that STAP available for gift card, I would have probably bought it with my $75 SDCC card, it's one piece that I would have bought for sure had they not released its preorder AFTER the Battle Droid 2-pack arrived.

I called SSC cust. service re: why have I been charged twice as far back as 10/11 & still my Tusken & Cdmr. Neyo have not shipped. They stated they were "having issues with customs." There's your F.Y.I. in case anyone was wondering. The rep thought pretty certainly the Tusken would ship the pm we talked...that was 2 days ago.
