• Lucasfilm Announces New Animated Series: Star Wars Rebels

News just in from Lucasfilm and Disney reports on a new animated Star Wars tv show, Star Wars Rebels. The Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni will be executive producer on this series, along with Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, Young Justice) and Simon Kinberg (Ep VII, X-Men First Class, Sherlock Holmes). The show will take place between Episode III and IV, it will be CG and will borrow from Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie's iconic designs. Star Wars Rebels will air on Disney XD with a one-hour special on Disney Channel first, and is looking to release in fall of 2014. More details and a video below.

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the ®Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."

"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. “I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV – an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe (http://www.starwarscelebration.eu/) will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on www.StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.

This seems pretty cool, hopefully Disney will let it shine instead of stumble a la Tron Uprising. The inclusion of Ralph McQuarrie concept art is a fantastic idea.

Why can't they show us at SDCC first?!? Oh man! Fall of 2014, hurry up.

My only thought on it is . . . they need to really really knock this out of the park. It'll be a huge sign of what disney's plans are for the franchise. If it's good, current fans will be happy, and hopefully it brings in new ones.

        If it's bad . . .

Well . . . Disney has, what, 4 billion reasons to make it good, right? It better be good . . .

This is a good idea. Alot of potential here. Its a good opportunity to capture both OT and PT fans. I'm looking forward to more information.

The article I read said that Clone Wars is getting a sixth season. This is contrary to anything we've already read and heard. Any truth to this or was it an author mistake?

It must be a mistake - I've been looking at the coverage of this news from various websites, and there are lots of errors like this to be found. There's still the bonus content coming, and it sounds like it will consist of at least three multi-episode arcs (meaning at least half a season's worth of content), but there has been no official word on when or how it will be released.

I commented on this in the forums, but I'm very happy about this new show.

        I read it on Yahoo.

The Clone Wars have always had a much better reputation in the "Star Wars" fan community than the first three episodes, so there's a lot of excitement surrounding this new series. If nothing else, it will tide fans over as "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" prepares for its sixth and (presumably) last season and the wait for Episode VII in 2015 begins.

Yahoo! is not always the most reliable source of news.

Anyways, I'm pretty optimistic about this new show. I especially love how they are going back to Star Wars' visual origin in determining the look for this series.

That same Yahoo article mentions "Uncle Ben and Aunt Veru" so it's not really that well-written. I suspect the author on that article was referring to the "bonus content" episodes that have not yet publicly revealed how they'll be released, but they're not actually a 6th season.
