• Hasbro's January 30th Street Date Stands

Hasbro has sent word to us that they wish to correct a misconception about the new Star Wars product launch date, that the Jan 30th, 2012 street date still stands. In their words...

"We wanted to take a moment and quickly clarify a discrepancy in the retail launch date of Hasbro's first 2012 items that began popping up online over the holidays. January 30, 2012, is the date for Hasbro's STAR WARS product to go on shelf in all countries except the U.K., which is setting now. If you've posted any other date, or have received questions from your readers, please note that 1/30 is the set date. Thanks!"

There you have it, straight from the Potato-Head's mouth, the rumors of a lifted date are not true.

After the worst year of distribution at retail I'VE EVER SEEN in SW action figure collecting...now this! It's beyond uncalled for to treat the collector market this way. I need to rethink where my discretionary spending will go.

Wait, why is the street date so bad? Theoretically, it puts every store on the same footing (aside from early leaks) and basically resets the line so that new product can come in.

Who cares about the stores? It puts us collectors on a even footing! I seem to live in a competative area, for no apparent reason, and have a miserable time finding new product. A hard street date means that if I make my rounds on Monday, I should find just about everything I'm looking for and honestly, I very rarely find everything I want in stores.

I personally tend to dislike "street dates" because they typically are of very low character, and may carry STD's. If I have to go with a woman of such social standing, I prefer to contact them by way of the flyers being handed out on the Las Vegas Strip.

I am not thrilled with this street date thing either, 2011 was such a horrid year for collecting this line that it seems like anything hampering new product and excitement is only going to set 2012 off wrong. That said, at least there will be new product in the first quarter for once, even if it does come with a price increase and none of it is anything I want.

So hey...forgive my ignorance, but what product does this street date cover? I've already found all of the TPM wave this past week at Target - is the street date supposed to be for the wave following?

Oh, and Chux, you had me laughing out loud with that comment! Thanks!

It covers the TPM Vintage wave and everything in the new Darth Maul packaging, including the new and repacked figures in the Clone Wars and Movie Heroes lines, along with Class I vehicles, Class II vehicles, battle packs, multipacks, Titanium re-release three-packs, role-play items, Fighter Pods, Jedi Force toys, and various exclusives at all three big stores. As with any release, there have already been leaks of several things - I already have the entire TPM Vintage wave, the AAT (and saw the other repacked vehicles), and have seen a lot of the roleplay stuff. The second 2012 Vintage wave (the ROTJ deleted scenes figures) are supposed to arrive in March, but of course that depends on distribution and everything.

The official date may stand, but I found the Queen Amidala in Black Gown, the Naboo Royal Guard, and the Battle Droid at my local Target yesterday 1/9. I can only assume the other figures from the assortment had sold as it was late in the day. I bought the Queen and Royal Guard. The Amidala figure is very nice, with excellent detail and perhaps a bit too much articulation, but just a great rendition. The Royal Guard was actually disappointing due the the "rainbow" paint app on the helmet meant to simulate light reflection. I've long awaited the redo on this, so I was a bit let down, but in all other respects, this is a nice figure.

Quality control on the packaging was a bit off as there was a sticker on the Royal Guard which read "First time as a figure" or something to that affect. The Guard was produced before, so I have to assume the sticker was meant for Dofine, Amidala or one of the other figures. The Amidala figure did not have this sticker.

Found about half the wave at the local WM. Sidious looks stupid with the full-on Palpatine face, and I didn't see enough of an improvement in Quinlan to drop $9 more on him.

More concerning was the Clone Wars figures on the Maul card. Crap, now I've got to actually look at the figures to weed out the CW stuff?

The CW stuff has a blue insert, while Movie Heroes is red. It's not as obvious as some of the recent differences have been, but it's something.

What's wrong with Sidious' face? Of course he's going to look like Palpatine. If you pose it right, it still looks good as a TPM/AOTC Sidious.

Yeah, but having his face so clearly visible on a TPM figure seems... odd.
